I see a number of users (including mrjanek apparently, according to his sig) using the Radeon 4890 with Kakewalk. Is this a challenging card to use when installing Snow Leopard via Kakewalk, or will Kakewalk take care of it?

 

I've got a GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 system ordered, except I need to pick and order my graphics card. Would love the power of the 4890, but it seems that an nVidia 9800 GT 1GB would be an easier install (according to some of the posts I've read) but would love to be proved wrong about the 4890. (also, looking for dual screen output, so wondering if that works with this card via Kakewalk)

 

If the 4890 is kosher with Kakewalk, are there any specific ones I should consider? Thanks!

 

 

I would stay with video cards that are natively supported by OSX and Apple. The 4890 is a dated card anyway now. IMO there will be a 58XX card around the corner from Apple.

thanks for your response. Is an nVidia 9800 gt a better choice then? Any specific models? I'm looking for 1gb onboard memory.

Hi, first of all thanks for this lovely guideline that makes it easier for us to install OSX SL.

 

I run a C2Q 2.4 x4 Intel Processor, P45 UD3LR, 8800 GTS 512.

Have used the USB method and is about to install OSX, but unfortunately I can't seem to find my hard drive anywhere inside the installation. It's just empty. When I check on BIOS I can find it, when I boot it with priority it boots up fine, but I can't find it anywhere during the installation (checked also around disk utility), anyone else had this problem?

Lol nevermind, found the problem. something with turning on AHCI instead of IDE on the SATA in BIOS.

I assume that Mac OS (or is it the mobo?) knows enough not to spin the fans fast unless it gets hot...

 

 

Ya the MSI one is the coolest and your card's fans will bump up if they get hot

but then again, no games are being played, i doubt they'' ever get over 60

p35-ds3l success here with USB method.. used an difrent AppleHDA for sound and custom sleepenabler for sleep..

8800GT 1gb gainward

 

 

ps : had problem with usb-stick then success with external harddrive... updated 10.6.3 smothly aswell..

I mount a GIGABYTE 220GT and it works fine on 10.6.2

I have experienced some issues with Graphics which were all related to HDMI. One of my machines which I used as a Media Centre had a nVidia 9500GT card. This was connected via HDMI > HDMI cable to a 42" Toshiba TV.

My issue revolved around screen image not fitting the screen - too big with overscan enabled - too small with overscan deselected. This setup worked perfectly with Gigabyte then Kakewalk installations and 10.6.2.

 

I have another machine with a Radeon X1950Pro card - this updated to 10.6.3 fine once I updated sleepenabler.kext.

 

I have now swapped the roles of my machines so the one with X1950Pro is my Media Centre - this works perfectly with DVI > HDMI cable to my TV.

 

The machine with the nVidia 9500GT card works perfectly with dual monitor setup 1 x DVI and 1 x VGA.

 

I think there are some issues with HDMI in the latest 10.6.3 release but if you are not using HDMI I have not seen problems reported.

 

I have no first hand knowledge of the 220GT

 

 

 

Power Supply Unit - A little information which may be useful to some.

 

I have experienced somewhat flaky results with USB on my Kakewalk box (I did not report them here as I believed they were hardware related). I had tried modifying the power fed to the USB ports via bios setting but that did not give me any more stability.

 

I decided to change the PSU in my machine - it was originally a 500W unit. I have now replaced this with a 650W unit and I have had rock solid USB performance ever since.

 

The issues I experienced included failure to boot with a USB device attached, USB Flash Disk failing to be recognised and failure to boot unless power first disconnected at socket and reconnected (not USB related but resolved since PSU upgrade).

After working with a MacBook for a year now, I was about ready to sell my Windows PC (Core i7 920, Ga EX58 Extreme, 6GB Ram and Nvidia GTX280).

Trying your Kakewalk CD with the GA-EX58 UD5 version resulted in a perfect Hackintosh install in about 60 minutes. Even Sound is working fine.

 

Thank you very much for this easy package!

 

P.S.: I understand I should rather not upgrade to 10.6.3. - right?

I was all set to buy a GA-EX58-UD5 but was informed of problems with the NIC. I am considering the Gigabyte EX58A-UD7, but it seems to have the same network chipset, the Realtek 8111D as the UD5.

 

Is the NIC problem a wide-spread problem with the UD5, and has anyone seen this with the UD7? Any other problems with the UD7? talk about 11th hour problem revelations just before ordering...

 

Are there any PCI NICs that work with a Kakewalk install?

i already follow your instructions on your PDF file, but my PC is always going stuck on white blankscreen for so long...i already trying 2 method (via USB & CD drive) but the result same, is that normal ?

UPDATE:

I updated to 10.6.3, the video card works perfectly! no kext to modify or replace! YHEA!

Try to change your keyboard to usb one. Apple computers doesn`t have ps/2 ports.

Unfortunately everything works - except the hibernating / sleep mode.

When I send the machine into sleep (either by selecting sleep from the menu or by rpessng the power button, the machine shuts down, but immediately comes back to live.

 

What are the best approaches to debug sleep issues on a hackintosh?

I have used your install from the time there was only 3 pages in this thread, and have followed it for some time, always seeing improvments, but today I have a special request.

You are most probably aware of the The Gigabyte Mac Edition BIOS Project and my request is for a simple install based on the work done in that project. It does cut out a lot of the hard work you have put into this, but it will be nice to have a simple install with only the basics.

For me one of your very 1st installer cd's helped a lot to get every thing working with the 0.7h mac bios. (it was the one giving all the errors on boot time :( )

 

If you want more information on what is needed on this I can post it here, but I think you know best how to do this.

Wow! I am upgrading from 10.5 onto a new 1.5TB HD and this is the quickest easiest method EVER!! I'm using a UD3P board... I am up and installing in under 5 min! Freakin amazing.

 

I'd like to try that MacBios. Any chance it'll work on the UD3P board?

I certainly hope to get a GA-EX58-UD5 board with no problems. How long have you had yours for? You would think that in time Gigabyte / Realtek would have corrected the problem and updated the board, though as far as I know there's only just a Rev 1.0 of it.
