Kakewalk: Minimal effort install (EP45, EX58, P55, G41)

Well I built and installed my Hackintosh last night. I just wanted to post a big thank you for Kakewalk. The whole process was incredibly smooth sailing. I put together the hardware and installed using the USB-method described in the first post. After that I just updated everything through normal system update. No messing around with kexts no nothing. Superb! So far everything I have tried is working perfectly (audio, network, sleep, shutdown, restart).

 

If anybody is planning a Hackintosh build from scratch here is a list of my components. I can verify that this combination is as hassle free as I imagine is possible. No configuration necessary, just need a Snow Leopard retail cd, USB stick and a second mac to make the USB bootable and run Kakewalk. Installation process is just booting from the USB and installing Snow Leopard in the standard way.

 

Here is my component list. Obviously the motherboard and gpu are the deciding factors but thought I'd post it if anybody is interested. I already had the gpu and used it because I knew it would probably be a very good fit for the system. You can still get the 9800GT (even fanless) as new and I am sure there are a lot of 2nd hand 8800GTs out there that can be had on the cheap.

All I can say is wow.. just wow. I was expecting a battle to get everything working and almost just went and bought a Mac Pro. The whole thing was the complete opposite. Absolutely no hacking.

I've built stable machines using EP45-UD3L, UD3P and EX58-UD5 with no problems, so I'd like to thank you for that. You can rest assured that i'll be donating a handsome amount to you soon for my gratitude.

 

I'm moving onto different boards now, and the next 2 on the list are:

P55-UD5

and

G41-ES2L

 

Unfortunately, kakewalk doesn't work on either of the boards. P55 just restarts itself (I've read on the forums as to why it doesn't work), and the G41 has an issue with the IDE/SATA mode (the board can't set to AHCI) and works fine with the MyHack installer. (I followed the guide here (http://www.infinitemac.com/f57/guide-retail-snow-leopard-dvd-install-for-g31m-t3672/))

USB Method:

1. Create an image of your Snow Leopard disc.

2. Restore the image to your thumb drive.

3. Run the "Kakewalk" installer. Point it to your thumb drive.

4. Reboot. Boot from your thumb drive. Install Snow Leopard.

5. You're up and running!

 

CD/DVD Method:

1. Burn Kakewalk.iso to a disc.

2. Boot from the disc. Follow onscreen instructions. Install Snow Leopard.

3. Install KakewalkBoot.pkg from BootCD

4. You're up and running!

I have a configuration that should work the mainboard has the intel G41 chpset unfortunatly no matter the bios settings it will tell me to turn off the machine prior to getting to the install. could this be due to my Soundblaster audigy 2 z5 soundcard? it is the only addin card I have? I will try this and repost I have noticed that various bios settings would get me further like seeing the apple icon with the spinning wheel prior to being told to turn of the computer. Any help with Bios settings would be appreciated.

I've just uploaded a new version of Kakewalk.

I hope this one solves the issues with P55 and also G41.

 

The P55 package now includes the qoopz kernel for 10.6 support.

After installing Snow Leopard on a P55 motherboard you should update to 10.6.2 straight away. Don't reboot! After the update process is done you can reboot and boot Snow Leopard from your harddrive instead of USB/CD.

 

Please give me your feedback so I can solve any issues that may appear.

I just used the new version with a G41 and it worked very well. Only minor issue so far was when I set the monitor resolution to the correct setting I ended up with just a blue screen...on reboot the res I selected was in use so its a minor issue. Card is a BFG 9600GT 512M. Sound works fine, just needed to select 'internal speakers' in the settings. I'll kick it around when I have some time later, but so far it looks great. Thanks for all your hard work.

 

UPDATE: After installing the available updates I am greeted by a black screen with a mouse pointer. The pointer moves, but thats all that is displayed. I am able to boot into safe mode. Is this perhaps a issue with the 9600GT card?

What is the defacto word on supporting the GA-X58A-UD3R, GA-X58A-UD5 and GA-X58A-UD7 motherboards?

 

I know that people have gotten them to work. Some report back that specific things are not working yet others report back saying all things work fine on them.

 

I am very interested in buying the GA-X58A-UD3R as the price is good and it supports firewire or possibly the GA-X58A-UD7 as it supports firewire and also eSata.

I would just want to notify you that with the last Kakewalk release disk icons are still orange with ex58-ud3r. Of course not a problem, it's only a kext to add, but I thought you would like to know.

My Headphone jack on the front of my case doesn't seem to work.

I'm on an EP45-UD3L, and everything besides that is working great thanks to Mr Janek!

 

In System Prefs--->Sound, it shows 4 outputs, but choosing any of them doesn't get sound out of my case's headphone jack (which is definitely connected).

 

Does anyone happen to have a fix for the headphones for the EP45-UD3L?

Found this fix for this. Just replace the LegacyHDA.kext in Extra with the one I have attached. Then run Kext Utility. Reboot. And your headphone jack will be working without needing to change anything in Sound Prefs!

I installed the x58a-ud7 version on my x58a-ud3r. Everything works great after the 10.6.2 update which fixed my lack of audio. What I am wondering if someone can help me fix my boot resolution to get my full 1920 x 1200. I tried all the methods on here and other places and no luck. My Card is a HIS 4870 1GB which was recognized right of the first boot. Is there a file i can download or is there something else i need to edit besides the file in the System Configuration folder because that didnt work. I hate the way te low res boot screen looks.

Good news on the G41 fixes, the board now works off the bat, and runs smoothly.

 

Still running into some issues into the P55, boots well into the install, but crashes on the last second. I'm going to do some troubleshooting and try to report what the problems are.

I have seen quoted here that if the Hard Drives are 1 Terra Byte or More you will have problems.

 

If that is the case try a smaller drive or partition a large drive so that it is less than 1 terra byte

Recently I added a second .5TB hard drive to my very stable Hackintosh setup, in order to install Win7 for gaming. I hooked up the new drive, tested to make sure I could still boot to my OSX drive, and then booted off a Win7 disk to install to my .5TB Win7 drive.

 

To my horror, after finishing the Win7 install, not only could I not boot to Win7, but I also get a "Disk Error" when trying to boot off my OSX drive. Fortunately, I was able to boot off the old GigabyteOSX thumb drive I used to do my installation, and my OSX install seems otherwise fine.

 

I tried re-installing the Kakewalk "Bootloader" install package, but I'm still getting the Disk Error at boot. What's going wrong? Do I need to install Chameleon or something? I thought Kakewalk took care of setting up all the bootloader stuff.

 

While we're on the topic, are there any good guides on adding a second Win7 boot to an existing hackintosh install? I get differing opinions between different blog posts and forum guides.

My 10 year old daughter is the only one that uses windows so I put windows on a separate physical hard drive and taught her to hit del on boot, enter bios, hit F12, Load bios preset for windows, hit F10, wait for mem count screen, hit F12 choose win boot drive, and then it boots to windows.

 

With your MoBo you can create and save profiles in your Bios. Very easily done and very convenient.

 

No need for boot loader etc...

Hi Zardek

 

I'd pull out the ubuntu disk, and leave the 250gb only. When you get to the screen where you see no disk, go up and select DISK UTILITY, and format your hdd to GUID - one partition only- and you will get your disk recognized.

Why not dual boot? I boot off my Mac drive and I can switch to the Window's drive during the boot screen. Very easy to do.

Glad to hear that your P55M-UD2 is up and running.

 

By the way, why you use the Kakewalk USB verion?

 

All you need are

1) a retail 10.6.0 install disc,

2) tonyxmac86's boot disk and

3) a USB flash drive with 10.6.2 Combo Update files.

 

No need to use any files from Kakewalk.

 

Just follow the steps in first post in http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=401 , except you need to add 1) NVenabler, 2) AL888B & 3) R1000 options when you run [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] Application (included in the boot CD) in steps 7 & 10.

 

Also, if you installed the MacPro update for audio from Apple through Software Update, the audio maybe "disabled", just run [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] and install R1000 option again to fixed it.

I have not yet upgraded my DVD burner to SATA (still ATA) which probably would have caused issues with installing from DVD/CD. Thus the reason for using USB method. Plus I already had the image of my 10.6.0 on the USB drive so I decided to use it.
