plunder
Hi Everyone, I need some help to sort out an OSx box that can meet my needs and I know a lot of you have got systems that are working perfectly. I'm a 3d artist and i'd like to use my new system to work with 3d apps, which also meens i need a system with perfect OpenGL acceleration. I have a system in mind after looking at the HCL so if people can give a little guidence then that would be appreciated. I've only got a budget of about £550 so this is the best i could muster. Asus P5LD2-VM (Mobo) Pentium D805 (CPU) Asus X1600XT 256mb Silent (GFX) 2x1GB OCZ memory Seagate 250gb SATA Pioneer DVR-111D DVD RW Thermaltake TR2 470W PSU I've already got a case so that helps thing. I need to stress this system will be for 3d Apps primarily so the OpenGL thing is important to me. Hope some of you can help me out. Thanx. gwprod12
That's approximately equivalent to my system, and my system works pretty good. (I only have 1gb ram tho)
plunder
gwprod12, thats cool. Have you tried any 3d apps on your system?
gwprod12
What, do you mean like 3d Studio etc? I dont use those kinds of programs... and if I did, I'd use them in windows.
plunder
Maya, Modo 201 that sort of package. I here you about using windows but i've used those packages in windows for decades. I just fancied a change and i hate windows. I'll probably have it on dual boot anyways.
gwprod12
I get a lot more performance out of windows, at least in WoW. Though it's pretty close.
plunder
So I guess nobody is willing to share their wisdom. I was hoping someone would give me an AMD setup for instance. Thanks anyway.
davegarbs
I think you will be better off with intel as they are supported by Apple whereas AMD is not wow...can't believe I just said that
Icebreaker
Most 3D gurus use Nvidia since ATI has terrible drivers, especially for Maya.
plunder
Thanks Guys I've actually ordered my Mobo today and I'm going Nvidia as I've always been an Nvidia guy, simply becuase of the drivers and the OpenGL support. I'll be getting the other things on my list to tomorrow.
dublove
Hmmm you know theres no drivers yet for full acceleration of an Nvidia card in osx yet? x1600 works with full acceleration thanks to Borris's hack!
plunder
dublove, Yeah i'm aware of the lack of acceleration with Nvidia but i've got the back up of the GMA950 chip on the mobo. Also the MacVidia drivers will one day have support for acceleration....well i'm hopefull. :/
