Check this out: In the July issue of Maximum PC in their OS X vs Windows XP Speed Test article (yeah, I know its June, but I've got a subscription and somehow I get issues a month early), they've laid odds that Apple will release OS X officially on the PC platform by 2007. Here's the quote:

OS X on the PC?

It can be done, but only for fun.

This might surprise you, but we think the odds of Apple introducing its OS to the PC wild before Vista ships are about 75 percent. Yup, thats right. You might be able to buy a Dell, Compaq, or Alienware PC running OS X by early 2007.

Dedicated hackers have even managed to get several versions of OS X (though not the latest) running on non-Apple, Intel-based PC's. Its not for the faint of heart, however, and its illegal if you don't own a copy of the OS. What's more, OS X on non-Apple hardware isn't a platform for day-to-day computing. We're waiting on an official version before we make the switch

Well, all I can say is, pfft, tell me something I don't know.

How does it feel to be on the forefront of the next revolution?

Honestly, I would buy it! I love OSX, but you loose the drivers and support... but if they started to support it! WOOHOO!

well, if that were the case, and apple would allow MacOSX to run on a PC, than the possibility would also exist to have both MacOSX and windows run in a PC, since I suppose BootCamp running under MacOSX would allow to partition and load windows as a second OS.

I would love to see Apple do this, and the only reason for having a dual boot system, is because at the present time, most software out there are in windows version, if Apple allowed their OS to be installed on a standard PC, eventually there would be no need for Windows, as more people switch the availability of software in MacOSX version would keep popping up.

Yeah, Apple, do it, you won't regreat it!!!!

I've read in several forums that Apple make most of their profit from Hardware, now if they release the OS for open market, for sure their hardware sale will drop, so that might be a good reason for Apple not to release it to open hardware. Although I know that Apple hardware is the sexyest hardware there is, but most of the market can't affored to pay that much for the hardware.

For me I like Mac OS X, but I can't afford that much for it's hardware. And one more thing is I can't live without Windows, simply because I'm a gamer and ALL of my games run on Windows only -so far :D -

But, in general I would really love to see the release of Mac OS X for any hardware and for sure I would buy it.

If they release for pc, I will come back to windows, the challenge will be over =p

I used PEARPC before discovering the OSx86

Does this mean you would stick with windows.... or with osx... not sure what you are saying.

As for OSX on the PC, it would be REALLY great to have them work side by side off the same OS. Dual monitor style, one monitor for PC, the other for mac. Granted I have that now with two different computers, but still, it's not the same :D Just a groovy though. Since they have quad-cores in development, I could imagine a system designed to support different os's on different channels. Perhaps a seperate memory channel and secondary bios? That would be killer! TOTALLY complicated and perhaps impractical, but I'm a dreamer :)

Of course they make most of their money from hardware sales. They don't sell OS X for PCs! If they did start to offer OS X for PC's, they would then began to make huge wads of money from software sales.

They would but they might not. Apple's software protection is really weak, compared to its Windows rivals. Think 'activation' and 'unique serial keys that check back with the internet host' as opposed to 'plain dumb serial keys'.

Dont believe it, Maximum PC says two things that are absolutely WRONG, so why can we believe what they said about apple?

"Dedicated hackers have even managed to get several versions of OS X (though not the latest) running on non-Apple, Intel-based PC's. "

not the latest?

"OS X on non-Apple hardware isn't a platform for day-to-day computing" OSX is my main system now, my only one :), yep it isnt for everyone, but we are not everyone.

Cheers

PD. I don't think Apple would ever sell their OS without hardware.

One thing that would be interesting is if they would sell a motherboard & CPU along with the install disc. Then people could BYODRC (Bring Your Own Drives, RAM, & Case), in the spirit of the Mac mini's BYODKM.
