tweak41
You boot 32-bit by typing "arch=i386" at boot. It's a flag that works like -v -x etc. Don't use the quotes when you type it though.
aliab
DO NOT UPDATE TO 10.6.3 BEFORE CHECKING MOST RECENT POSTS (PAGE 21+) *UPDATE 12/7/2009* At the bottom you'll find instructions on how to update to 10.6.2 as well as a much improved DSDT.aml file (many thanks to Bchemist). ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hello fellow P6T SE users. The goal of this guide is simple---get you up and running with a vanilla (no modifications to the system components essential to OS X like the kernel) installation. It's relatively simple, but can be a bit time consuming for a first time user. First and foremost I literally cannot take credit for anything you find in this guide. All information, patches, and other important stuff came from other users and other places which I will attempt to document to the best of my ability. If anyone sees an error with the information provided please do not hesitate to inform me and I will do my best to correct it as soon as I can. So, having said that let's get on our way! Does Auto sleep works ? and what about speedstep ? Thank's
RNA Helicase
Network sharing issues. I've got 2 p6t se 920 i7 hackintoshs running 10.6.1 from the tut at the start of this thread I use them as render nodes for c4d running 64bit and mostly everything works fine connecting to them from a macpro. BUT Sometimes I can see them and exchange files and other time they don't play ball and I get a message saying the server can't be found or words to that effect. I've tried updating one of them to 10.6.2 but then it just KP on bootup. Anyone else had this, knows and answer? Cheers Hey, I've been using rsync between my hackintosh and Macbook Pro almost daily. ssh and scp are also working fine for me, at least over the local network; I haven't had the need to connect from the outside. Are you trying to connect to them on the local network? Are you mounting the drives with Finder to exchange files? Trying to exchange files through Finder has given me some problems like you mention. I'm not sure why and haven't really looked into it (I usually use terminal for file sharing and that hasn't given me any problems). I'll play around with it on my machine and see if I can come up with anything. About the KP with 10.6.2, make sure you don't have the sleep enabler kext. That was causing many KP for me. If you've updated and forgot to remove it (like I did) you can boot off your usb drive, open a terminal window and rm sleepenabler.kext then reboot and it should be fine. Cheers. andrew79
S.O.S If you use the onboard soundcard DO NOT update with the new mac pro core audio system update!!! For some reason this new update disables the onboard sound. External usb soundcards work fine. I'm searching for a solution, if i find any i will post. (I am using the 2 kexts solution for onboard sound, if anyone updated and has onboard sound, please post your kext) -------------------- UPDATE 1 The only solution that worked so far is moving the 2 audio kexts from extra/extensions folder, to /System/Library/Extensions. If you want to have this new "core audio" update (i do because i use a core audio soundcard) and you want onboard sound too, then you have to make this change for now. Copy the 2 audio kexts from extra folder on your desktop.Delete them from your extra/extensions folder. Use Kext utility and rebuild extensions.mkext for extra folder. Then use Kext utility again and install the 2 kexts. It will install them into /System/Library/Extensions. Make sure that both kexts are installed into there. Repair permissions with disk utility and restart. You are done. Another solution as i said, is to avoid this update. If anyone finds a new kext that will work in extra folder, pls post! I hope that the upcoming 10.6.3 update will not have anymore surprises for us

andrew79
News about the Mac Pro audio update (see my previous post). Moving appleHDA and HDAEnabler solves the problem after the update BUT if you search for new update...this update appears again...so for now there is only one solution. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UPDATE if you use your onboard sound. I think it overwrites AppleHDA and that's why it disables onboard sound...

Did you get a chance to test your system using only core audio with onboard sound disabled? If so were there any performance benefits? For those new to this thread, I'm asking since I also have an external audio interface and I use core audio in a way that I can get by without onboard audio. Everyone else should indeed not use this update.

Everyone else should indeed not use this update. I had frequent sound problems since I installed 10.6.2 - sound started to get noisy and completely messed up in a few minutes, had to restart snow each time to fix the issue. After latest update I've not experienced this problem so far, I'll let you know if this happens again. Apart from that no visible changes.

For those new to this thread, I'm asking since I also have an external audio interface and I use core audio in a way that I can get by without onboard audio. Everyone else should indeed not use this update. I had all my audio programs working with my external sound card and core audio. I used the onboard sound card only for the mic input (not for recording), for skype, i-chat, e.t.c. I now configured skype and ichat to work with my webcam's mic so i am ok. The only difference i can see with this update is with cubase. I did not have any sound issues before, i had just a small issue with cubase and it seems to be fixed with this update so i guess it was a core audio problem. I had some crashes with logic express 9 but this is a major issue with some au plugins. Supposedly 10.6.3 will bring a lot of fixes for crash issues but i wouldn't get too exited Those issues exist since logic studio 8 and 10.5.x As a matter of fact all sites report that 10.6.3 update is an update for crash issues with some programs. No magic mouse fixes (i don't use mine anymore... this mouse should come with a sedative in the box), no support for new hardware (P55 chipset still not supported officially) and i hope NO surprises for hackintosh community
Bchemist
Thanks guys for the input. 10.6.2 has sucked royally on both my Macs and Hacks. In fact I've reverted back to 10.6.1 on all except for the P6T-SE since I do mostly video on it. Audio is mainly on the Rampage but it is nearly identical to the P6 series with only a couple of exceptions with respect to what Snow Leopard supports. I guess I got lucky in that I'd disable onboard audio without thinking about the "whys" until recently that I've realized how much it can conflict. Obviously that cannot be done in a Mac since there's no GUI bios. In my Macbook Pro, I cannot even play the sample tracks that ship with Logic without it maxing the cores and my Geekbench score has taken a 40% performance hit since 10.6.2. Whatever they did to this 10.2 kernel, they need to fix it since it's one of the worst yet. There is just too much focus on iPhone and iPad in that all of the real "problem solvers" seemingly are not working on the big ticket hardware anymore. The P5Q and the P6T-SE share the same 1200 codec. When I reverted back to 10.6.1 on the P5Q (since my girlfriend uses it for Photoshop and was complaining about 2 channel audio while she works) I deleted the two 1200 audio codecs from the Extras folder in the external USB and installed the VoodooHD kext to the S/L/E folder. For the first time EVER it auto sleeps plus I have full 5.1 audio (or at least it seems to work). I have not experimented with the P6T-SE using this fix but for those who badly want 5.1 or 7.1 audio, it might work. In the P5Q, however, it needs to be booted with a -f each time in addition to arch=i386. So again, I'm not recommending that anybody try this unless they really want multi-channel audio. Bchemist
Many issues are beginning to make sense. The Rampage has always run about 5-10C cooler than the P6T-SE. Trying to figure out why was driving me nuts. The Rampage has a separate PCI-E audio card! The Mac Pro users who were available to avoid the brunt of the problems were also using a PCI-E audio card from what I understood. So my guess would be to get a PCI-E sound cards and disable onboard audio. This would likely give a performance boost, drop temperatures, and have functional sound when not using core audio (for those who use it). I'm going to get a card and see what happens since I have a feeling that removing onboard audio will fix many nagging problems. Stay tuned. I use my Hack for audio mixing/recording (Logic Pro), I have an external USB audio interface and I've never really used onboard audio support. Since my upgrade to i7+P6T SE performance has never been an issue, some tracks really crawled on my Q6600+P5k PRO and now they play flawlessly. As mentioned before I experienced a few problems with audio after 10.6.2 upgrade, but things seems to be back to normal after latest core audio update (keep you updated on this). Just a reminder for new hackintosh users: DO NOT UPDATE UNTILL YOU READ THAT THAT IT IS SAFE. You should read netkas blog for information. I can't see any performance differences but cpu is running cooler by 1 celsius degree. Is this your idle temperature or your average temperature when you are running an audio based application? From what I've been reading lately it's not just limited to the Mac Pros but also the i7 iMac as well but spares the i5 from the problem. It seems to be related to a combination of audio and hyperthreading since audio depends mainly on the cpu. this update install in IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext the new file .plist l'iMac11_1.plist solution for restore audio restore your old AppleHDA ,solution for update appears again edit your old smbios.plist whit: <span style="font-size: 8pt; line-height: 100%;"><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>SMbiosdate</key> <string>03/12/2010</string> <key>SMbiosversion</key> <string>IM111.88Z.0034.B00.0910301727</string> <key>SMboardproduct</key> <string>Mac-F2268DAE</string> <key>SMfamily</key> <string>iMac</string> <key>SMmanufacter</key> <string>Apple Inc.</string> <key>SMproductname</key> <string>iMac11,1</string> <key>SMserial</key> <string>xxxxxxxx</string> <key>SMbusspeed</key> <string>4800</string> </dict> </plist></span> tested no more audio update and the system works well same before audio update, now wait the cpu code for i7,for now the system recognize the cpu xeon Now this is interesting since I noticed that under 10.6.2 before this update the iMac11,1 was not recognized in I/O register in the platform plugin and my temperatures were higher. It's interesting that it's showing up as a Xeon. Maybe it has something to do with the bootloader. Maybe removing the SMbusspeed will allow it to be identified as an i7 again? The bootloader is supposed to auto-detect the SMbusspeed.

It was 40 celsius degrees before (+/- 1), and now on idle is 39 (+/-1)*. When i use an audio application, for example cubase or logic studio, temp is about 47-49. I think it's fine but it's winter here, really cold winter in my area The only think that makes my cpu hot is flash (sometimes 60 degrees) and skype if i am on a video call (56-58 degrees). *When i say system idle, i mean no audio, video or web designing applications running. Mail client, little snitch, dropbox, speed download and ichat...are running all the time. With these applications running temp is about 40c. The only bad thing about where I live is that I am spending big money on air conditioning and cooling 365 days out of the year so there's a constant question mark in my mind about how my temperatures compare in a non-tropical environment where cpus are meant to be run. That's strange about flash...is that when you are using Adobe Flash or when playing something Flash-based? Skype makes sense since it's audio and video. I'm assuming that this is after you made the update and subsequent fix correct? If Logic stayed under 55C then that is definitely a step in the right direction. New imacs late 2009, have this problem too. It seems that the osx version of flash player needs more cpu power. I have this problem with my laptop too and it's worst (75c when watching youtube video) and also my mac mini gets hot when i watch flash videos (70c). There is a 10.1 prerelease version of adobe's flash player that seems to be "lighter" but it is not stable yet.

wahwahman89
I just did a RAID install on this. Two things confuse me: 1) Backing up the main RAID drive (striped) to the 'Time Machine' RAID drive (both RAID volumes are on the same pair of disks) causes Time Machine to cause a Kernel Panic at 2.49GB completed. 2) XBench scores for the computer are low... I mean very low. CPU returns 155-166. Eh?? The memory component isn't brilliant either. Any connection with the 'Bus Speed = 533MHz' in System Profiler? Thanks to anyone who can help me.
