sHARD>>
A joke, a mistake, or a sign of things to come? Engadget is reporting that Dell has now added an 'Apple OS X' OS option to many of their machines' driver download pages. While Dell has previously expressed interest in OS X on their machines, the actions of Steve Jobs indicate such a move is unlikely. Shifting us futher into hoax territory, we find that all of the downloads present for 'OS X' aren't actually compatable with the operating system. Dell currently offers OS X drivers for their printers, and in all likelyhood they have simply made a mistake while making site adjustments. But we can dream, can't we? Colonel
I saw this too. Dell wants Mac badly. Just let him Steve. Here's a screenshot of Dell's page. EDIT All of the Mac drivers are .exe file. I guess you'll need Wine to use them.

Jeezoflip
That would be perrrrrrrty damn sweet considering all the computers in my house are dells...but its doubtful. Hmm, seems to only have drivers for laptops, not desktops.
xVariable
It's a printer driver for OS X. I downloaded/extracted/ran the installer packages fom Dell's site. One is called "Dell Laser MFP Installer", and the other "Dell ScanThru Installer".
bofors
I think this will happen someday (in the next few years), it would be a little premature now given that Apple (and Adobe) have yet to even complete the transition to x86.
Mr. Bond
I think this will happen someday (in the next few years), it would be a little premature now given that Apple (and Adobe) have yet to even complete the transition to x86. Not only that, but the vast majority of people haven't even completed the transition yet. The average joe still doesn't have much of a clue what the significance of x86 Mac's are, other than the fact that it runs faster than "old" macs. Really, this just re-opens the do-or-die discussion of licensing out OS X. If steve play's his card's right, something good could come out of it for us endusers. As long as it's not another "HP iPod" of a deal...
MarineCorps97
I logged into Dell's Site and see this now as well. However, the latest news from Dell is they are not going to use the Intel Chips anylonger. They are going to AMD chips. So I am not thinking that they will ever actually have MAC boxes in there line up. Marine

Korrupted
I think it's fine that they added an OSX section; not everyone would use an Apple official supported printer.. Hell I use a Lexmark printer myself, which works fine(PPC drivers, too).

Marine Even if they did sell AMD chips in desktop machines, you can still run Mac OS X just as well, as long as there are drivers for the rest of the hardware you're using. bigboss
haha dell could be nice and add some nvidia graphics card drivers too about the dell using amd, i did read that they might use amd chips for higher end products but that seems unlikely now considering how intel is finally getting back into the game with its chips. ofcourse, its too early to be sure as amd hasnt even announced its next gen workstation processors and the am2 socket for consumers might just be a stepping stone to amd's next line. Since AMD will still have the edge in 4+ socket space, that is where Dell intends to place them. The "OSX" downloads are most likely a carry over from the printers and other peripherals. The "OSX" downloads are most likely a carry over from the printers and other peripherals. currently they do have the advantage but the thing is that you can get 4 xeon chips and stick them on a dual xeon mobo but if you want to get and amd quad dual-core, you will need to buy the 8xx line of processors which costs almost twice as much as the 2xx line of opterons. plus, the quad-core platforms intel is rolling out will mean you need only 2 sockets for 8 cores or 4 sockets for 16 cores. im not sure what amd is offering so im not going to speculate. yea about the os x downloads, they are probably for the people who use dell printers in os x. ofcourse, they could "accidentally" post some nvidia drivers
syldaril
" Dell Adds 'Apple OS X' Driver Download Section" That's not what the screenshot shows. It shows that DELL added a Mac OS link to their drivers download section, not a Mac OS X link as stated in the article title . Syldaril.
brainbone
currently they do have the advantage but the thing is that you can get 4 xeon chips and stick them on a dual xeon mobo .... The point is, AMD’s architecture for SMP is superior to Intel’s offerings. Over 2 sockets, Intel’s platform starts to hit a brick wall, performance wise. AMD’s Opteron scales well up to 8 socket, and beyond. It's not a matter of how many CPUs you can cram on the platform, but how efficient that platform is with those CPUs. Scothiam
Could it be that these are just enhanced drivers to install on dell pc's running windows for use with printers plugged into macs and shared over a network?? I'm thinking this is not nearly as exciting as we'd like, but probably pretty boring... Any word on Os9 being ported to x86? jk, tho, I sure do like that old Os

Jeezoflip
W/e. i dont really think apple is ever gonna let any other comptuer company run their os. Though it would make them richer, i dont think they want to turn out like microsoft, and start to have the quality of their products go down. The more people that have it, the cheeper things get as mass production takes place. Plus they will have to wright a whole {censored} load of new drivers for stupid windows based hardware, and those will have bugs after bugs. 353905823535 more viruses will be written for it....Its just a mess. bofors
W/e. i dont really think apple is ever gonna let any other comptuer company run their os. The fact the Steve Jobs let HP put their name on an Apple iPod, suggests to me that he is open to licensing OS X and it is Steve Jobs who I suspect would be the real barrier within Apple to doing this. Though it would make them richer... This means it is inevitable, money is a strong force. Plus they will have to wright a whole {censored} load of new drivers for stupid windows based hardware... This certainly is not true. They could force licensees to use the same specific hardware set which Apple uses.
