[GUIDE] Scripted Yosemite/Mavericks Install on Gigabyte Mobos

Recommended Posts

This is an awesome script. Installed without issues. I did need to install nvidia kexts to get my 9800GT working, but everything else works perfectly.

There is one question I have. When the computer is booting up, it displays all the text as when you choose verbose mode. It does not display the apple logo on the grey screen.

I saw that there is an option to select a boot picture in the script, but when I select it, nothing happens. After I select option 14 and press enter, the screen flashes for a second and then puts me right back at the script menu.

Any ideas? I tried doing a search within this topic, but no results come back. I also paged through the start of this thread, but didn't see anything related to this.

Thanks

To disable verbose mode during boot, go to your extra folder and edit your com.apple.boot.plist file, remove this line completely

<key>kernel flag</key>

<string>-v -x ...</string>

You are not installing the boot pics because there are no pictures to be found in the folder. I think DD excluded this and added a link for downloading the boot pictures alone, size issue I think. CHeck the first post and you will find the link.

look at all the chipsets of your board and not the brand like eVGA, does not tell us anything, do a search on the forum.

You're right, of course. Here is the relevant information:

e760

CPU Socket: LGA1366

Chipset: Intel X58 and ICH10R

Audio chip: Realtek ALC889

SATA connectors: 6x SATA on ICH10R with Matrix RAID

Additional storage connectors: ATA133 + 2x SATA on JMB363; 1x SATA + 1x eSATA on JMB362

LAN: Dual Realtek Gigabit

I'll be attempting to run the hardware in my sig, I'm waiting on a few parts before I build it.

Looks like it should work but your DSDT will probably be different to ours but I suspect that that will

mainly apply to your processor section, you should probably spend a lot of time comparing the Asus and

Gigabyte threads to get a feel for any subtle differences then work out if any apply to you

I'm guessing ICH10R, SATA, ALC889 Realtek will be pretty similar - you should be able to work things

out eventually with the lspci command line tool and ioreg, both fairly advanced topics I'm afraid so lots

of research for you. You should be able to find some generic third party kexts that work until then

good luck

PS Using EVGA you'll probably avoid some niggling Gigabyte bugs that really annoy me - eg crappy USB

support

Short SL Install Guide with FakeSMC and IONetworkingFamily.kext in Extra

So another guide for newbies, big thanks to LocusOfControl and d00d for his DSDT patching guide which can be found here. This guide is also based on DD's latest script...thanks DD.

The guide also uses automatic Efi string injection meaning you wont need to generate efi strings for your GPU. AFAIK, it works for almost all Nvidia Cards and some Radeon Cards. I will not provide support for graphics issues as the solutions are all over the forum.

THE GOODIES

This guide uses an extensively but simply patched DSDT.aml file and requires only fakeSMC in the /Extra folder and the latest Cham 2.0 RC5 mozo (r642 - Unofficial) Based on modifications to RC4.

Note that the DSDT was extracted and patched from F9m bios and will thus give KP's if a lower bios version is used. F9m to F12 are supported.

AsereBLN_v1.1.9 Bootloader also works and this can be installed using DD's latest script.

ALTERNATIVE (Boot loader)

The modded PCEfi 10.6 bootloader from Prasys' blog also works but I am not using that in this guide, if you want to use that one you can google it.

THE LAST BIG NOTE (Sound)

The DSDT is patched to use the original AppleHDA.kext in S/L/E (once again thanks to LocusOfControl. This works with the onboard sound 2.1 and uses the black port for audio. You can achieve 5.1 surround sound by using the SPDIF port. Note that when you decide to use this option, the volume control on the keyboard will not work.

NOTE: Sound is not active upon first boot because output is set to external microphone, open system preferences and fix this.

The two kexts provided in DD's script for sound also work so if you are having problems with sound, install those kexts to your /Extra folder and reboot.

WARNING!!!

In order to use DD's script successfully to support this setup, you will have to remove some kexts from the 10.6 folder. Since fakesmc.kext is the only one needed in /Extra, move the other kexts to the _repository folder in the Misc_Patches folder.

There shouldn't be kexts in the _ATA folder so move them to the _repository folder too.

The same applies to audio unless you want to use the kexts provided by the script.

INSTALLATION

Install SL the way you normally do, either using DD's script or a BootCD, empire EFI works well with our boards.

Apply the 10.6.6 update if needed, this is not necessary as you can update once you have the system running.

Once you are done using DD's script, exit it and do not restart. Copy the attached EXT_DSDT you downloaded to your /Extra folder. I don't assume unless I really have to so I am assuming you used DD's script to install the necessary kexts..

FakeSMC and IONetworkingFamily to /Extra.

Reboot and cross fingers...hopefully you will be greeted by the OSX welcome Video :-)

For the system to successfully wake up from sleep instead of restarting, you need to go into your system preferences, Energy saver and make sure that Start up automatically after a power failure is active.

I have no known issues with this setup so if you come across any please send me a message or just post and I will do the best I can to help.

Hm, I am having some more internet problems. I've been running 10.6.1 for a week just fine and I finally got around to installing some updates, which included 10.6.2. After the restart, my ethernet seems to be out. BIOS detects it, my iMac can use the same cable just fine. I've tried updating boot caches, reinstalling kexts, turning off/unplugging the psu, everything that I know of, but I still don't have any internet (last thing I'll try is clearing CMOS, but I wanted to see if there was an obvious fix for this). The ethernet ports don't seem to be recognized under the system profiler, so I am not sure what's up. Everything else seems to be running smoothly. Any ideas? Thanks.

See signature for specs.

EDIT: Hm, after looking into it further, I did two batches of software updates. The first one was early at about 7:30pm tonight and included 10.6.2, iTunes, iLife Support, some printer stuff, and remote desktop client. I was able to get back on the internet after that because I installed the next group of updates, at 10:04pm

2r5ulbc.png

Perhaps that can shed some light on what would cause my ethernet to not work

Hmm,

New at this hackintosh thing, coming from linux

I just purchased the gigabyte board, i7 cpu, and a 9800gt, as well as the retail 29$ osx from apples website

the tutorial states I must have osx already installed, or is there another way to do this?

I was reading another thread about kakewalk, would this work?

any help or suggestions would be appreciated :D

Hello,

I've been browsing forum and the thread for good couple of hours, but can't seem to find similar problem that I ran into.

I got the following configuration: GigaByte GA-EX58-UD5, Core i7-960 (3.2ghz), 6gb 2000mhz ddr3, nvidia gtx285 1024mb.

So far I tried following: playing with bios settings, tried different bios versions (f6, f7, f10), but every time the same problem occurs:

when the boot starts (either from installation drive: dvd / flash drive or from hdd that has already installed mac os) - the moment it should go to white screen with the apple (roughly 3-5 seconds into booting), the system just resets itself.

I tried booting with various options, but every time is the same problem.

I really dont get it - is the CPU unsupported or something, because video card worked just fine with my old config: core duo 2.4ghz cpu and older gigabyte motherboard.

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks in advance.

I am using AsereBLN_v1.1.9 Bootloader which can be downloaded from here. Download the very first one and move these three files to the desktop.

boot_with_embedded_theme

boot0

boot1h

Rename boot_with_embedded_theme to boot

Go to the ~extra/Bootloaders/Chameleon_2.0_RC4/ folder located in DD's script folder. Create a new folder called whatever and move boot, boot0 and boot1h into the folder you just created.

Copy the three files you moved to the desktop to ~extra/Bootloaders/Chameleon_2.0_RC4/ folder. The modded bootloader will be installed when you install Chameleon 2 RC4 using DD's script.

Hi Cruisar, I really like this installation but have one question: Can you maybe modify the DSDT so that it will support 5.1 surround through the normal audio ports and not only S/PDIF? That would be great :thumbsup_anim: (if it has to, i will use an extra kext for it).

Thanks ;).

I am already looking into this as I use 5.1 surround a lot. You can use VodooHDA or just the 2 audio kexts provided in DD's script and then create an aggregate device using Audio midi setup and then configure your outs to surround 5.1

I tried clearing CMOS today and nothing seems to fix the ethernet problem. I'd appreciate any info. I was convinced I was going to be able to update flawlessly, but it isn't looking too good so far haha.

Well, i'm using the method of the 2 audio kexts right now, but won't that interfere with the information in the DSDT.aml file or is it safe to use :D ?

No it wont interfere and it is safe to use. I have been doing some research on 5.1 surrond sound with the native AppleHda kext and the only way to achieve this is to modify the original AppleHDA kext in S/L/E. I am guessing this is because real mac's dont have 5.1 surround through 3 outputs.

You can read further here if you still want 5.1 surround sound.

I am yet to come across a DSDT that has 5.1 surround incorporated into it. Creating an aggregate device works well with the 2 audio kexts from DD, why dont you just use those instead. I am satisfied with my digital out as I use the same in Windows, would be annoying to have to change everytime I booted into a different OS

Yea ofcourse you're completely right about that and I don't have any problems either with the setup that i'm using now (those logitech x-540 speakers are just the best!). Another question: does this natively support the white ports (Jmicron) because I need them ;).

I havent tested these ports yet so I dont know if it supports them but I am not sure. You can check and let me know. I have no use for those ports, the 6 blue ones are more than enough for me.

In order to use those pots, you will need to install the kext for them, DD provided that as well in his script.

I guess I'm not quite understanding, I can burn an image either using linux or windows, I dont have access to a mac machine, and it states in the guide that the legacy iso is known not to work with the tutorial for this motherboard, which is the one I purchased.

I purchased the retail dvd ($29) from apple

How am I go about this, I truly am a hackintosh newbie, and help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi again guys,

I did some fiddling with the DSDT.aml file using d00d's tips here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=196771

But now I can't get audio to work at all. :(

I get some sad info in the log during boot concerning audio. Some excerpts here:

com.apple.kextd[10] Load com.apple.driver.AppleHDA failed; removing personalities.

com.apple.kextcache[210] Prelink failed for com.apple.driver.AppleHDA; omitting from prelinked kernel.

I've tried to re-apply the 10.6. Combo Update, but it didn't help.

Not much use to you but you should keep a copy of your last working file before you replace it with

a new one, that way you can always roll back ...

Unless you can remember what you did I suggest starting with a copy of d00d's HDEF edits - assuming you only

fiddled with the DSDT

From my experience, the kext not loading shouldnt have anything to do with the DSDT. Which of the audio options are you using in d00d's thread?

I will recommend getting your hands on the original appleHDA kexts. Have you tried to reset the kext caching osx does?

You can do this by typing this in terminal

rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext

Anyone seen DD around lately?

You're absolutely right, and in fact I do have a backup of my latest working audio combo of files, and they are the ones from this thread by digitaldreamer. However I got interested in narrowing things down a bit and I went to follow the instructions in d00d's thread, but never got audio to work after that.

The plan is to use audio option B.

But now I'm using this guy's DSDT.aml from a reply in d00d's thread which said audio would work without ALC889a.kext. For some reason I can't find that post now...

I have grabbed both AppleHDA.kext and IOAudioFamily.kext from my MacBook Pro that's running 10.6.2. These are considered as original kexts, right?

I'll try the Terminal command.

By the way, I currently don't have any Extensions.mkext in /Extra.

Only fakesmc.kext and IONetworkingFamily.kext with the RealtekR1000SL.kext as a plug-in in IONetworkingFamily.kext and I'm using d00d style DSDT.aml

Sorry, I omitted something, here is the right command

rm -Rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext

There is a DSDT attached to short guide I have a few posts up. This uses the vanilla AppleHDA in S/L/E and yes you should have extensions.mkext in your extra folder but it depends on how you installed things. I have fakeSMC in Extra and RealtekR1000 in S/L/E

I initially used dd's script in this thread, but after getting some audio distortion issues I thought it was time to do something. (I also didn't like the fact the the AppleHDA.kext used in dd's script is a quite old - 1.4 somehing - verison)

So, I wen't and tried to follow d00d's DSDT instructions and replaced the DSDT I had from dd's script with the one in his attachments. (fourth from above at the end of his post here http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=196771)

I also did replace the boot file in / with the one Duvel300 has made since that was suggested by d00d for restart to work. Found here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...00#entry1364728

I also removed the Extensions.mkext in /Extra since it was the old from dd's script containing kexts I figured was obsolete when using the DSDT from d00d. (?)

A mess, eh? :P

Another thing: I've noted that when I do a ”cold start” the boot process hangs when talking about something like CPU and PowerManagement (as if the NullCPUPowerManagement.kext would be needed) but if I reset the computer at this stage and let it boot into Mac OS X again it works just fine. :(

What's up with that?

Thanks a lot for helping out! :)

Seeing as I couldn't get any help on my ethernet issue or figure it out myself, I decided to just redo the install process, since it wasn't a big deal. Now I have a much bigger problem. I followed the script and the steps exactly how I did previously, but now, as soon as the bootloader comes up and gets ready to "open" OSX, my monitor just goes black and loses signal (doesn't say check cable or anything, it just turns off.) I've tried this using my DSDT from the previous install, and also using no DSDT. Either way, I get as far as hearing the Snow Leopard introduction music, but no video at all. I've tried booting with the -v arch=i386 flag as well; basically everything I did before that seemed to work. Any obvious problems going on here? I am just frustrated because I am not doing anything different from my previous install a week ago. Thanks.

I've tried using the RC4 bootloader and the PC-EFI bootloader, both resulting in the same lack of video.
