Thanks, hopefully someone here knows and will chime in. Again, if I get a go ahead on using the old Leopard tools I Mentioned, I can make this card work (I assume) with SNL. But again, I do not understand how SNL is different.

ZoroLives, If you are installing SL from Leopard, you need to uncheck the other options and leave only the system files. If you dont do this, you will get the install failed message. Just click on customise after you have selected the disk to install SL to.

With regards to efi stings, you can use OSXtools or google for aquamac efi string guide.

Just got SL running, but graphics is 1280x1024, and says Kext not loaded in Sys Info.

I have a EFI Flashed 4890. Im guessing i'm still gonna need kexts? Or maybe just a line that needs to be added somewhere? thanks.

I dont have much experience with ATI cards but I know u can download pcefi version 10.5 boot file from netkas' site. Replace your existing boot file and add this to your boot.plist.

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<sting>Yes</string>

Any idea on how to solve the problem?

thanks!

My System:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2,66Ghz

GPU: msi N285GTX 1024mb

Mobo: Gigabyte EX58-UD4P

HDD: 1) Seagate 500GB - Snow Leopard [not working atm]

2) Seagate 1000GB - iAtkos v7 (-> Leopard) [working]

Are you not supposed to be running a Vanilla kernel with your setup, what is xnu kernel doing on your hack, arent those for AMD processors?

OK, I was reinstalling SNL over SNL so the same would apply. I re-did it as there is a new script and it still is not "right".

In summary:

I tried dragging the EFISTUDIO app to SNL after booting and, it won't let me authenticate. That means I cant crete new folders or install apps, weird. That also means that I can't tell EFISTUDIO to do anything (I assume) as it isn't launched from that drive. Meaning,m I don't see a way to "point" it or OSX86Tools at a drive. Both seem to work as they are launched.

I also was unable to run Qflash and point it at a thumb drive. I thought at first it was due to the thumb drive being HFS+. I reformatted it in FAT32 and results were the same. Qflash only wanted a floppy. Yes I know, that isn't how it should be. I assume that was because for some odd reason my thumb D wasn't seen so it just showed the Floppy as empty. I checked the bios and it is indeed set for USB so it really should work.

In summary:

  1. I have no Ethernet in SNL.
  2. I have the same trouble as Cindori is reporting with just the one resolution and nothing very good for my screen. There is no second monitor either.
  3. I am unable to authenticate my new volume. What that means is I tell it to authenticate, but then it just ignores me. I can't get a bad password or anything, just the authenticate dialog which is pressed and goes away - doing nothing. I feel I am in la la land. Fascinating idea to run SNL but so far, no go.

Ok if you are installing from SL to SL then its fine to leave those options turned on. Do you have ATY_init in S/L/E. This kext should allow you to have a full Grpahics support, 32 bit mode only though.

With rergards to you flashing from your thumb drive, make sure its formatted as MBR otherwise the system wont be able to recognise it. It happened to me so maybe it will work for you. Other than that, I dont know why yoiu are having problems

Well, after my initial install it asked if I Wanted to migrate my files from another mac or another drive. I had it migrate all my files. This was a drive which I Had already cleared. I could also use CCC to make another clean 10.5 BU on the target disk, then install SNL. Perhaps my permissions are totally screwed up? I can't check them with Disk Utility in SNL.

What is MBR? Master Boot Record is what I Googled, relating to Windows only so far. I tried FAT32 as that seemed more Windows friendly.¿

I believe I have the ATY you mentioned, it is standard in the DD script. SO yes, it works but I really need to do what I did with Leopard, used EFISTUDIO and selected my graphics card then had it install into my apple com plist.

Yeah perhaps your permissions are screwed up, I think you shoulld first get everything working perfectly before you move your files and settings over. Yes Master Boot Record was what I was refering to. Choose Fat32 and then MBR. OSX86 tools should work well in SL for creating Efi strings for your card

I dunno, do i?

i was using the script of this guide... is it not for Core i7?

Vanilla kernel is not included in the x58 mobo patch install...

And how do I install Vanilla? just copy like a .kext?

thanks =)

My bad, xnu indeed is actually the darwin Mac Kernel, I dont know why I said Vanilla Kernel, I once run StageXNU kernel on my AMD hack so maybe thats why....stupid me....is there a way you can show your system log file. I have never come across that error before so I Dont know how to help. Maybe another geek or user on this forum might be able to help.

By Vanilla, I meant a bare installation of OSX, without any changes in configuration (patches)

Yeah! Finally!!! everything is smooth and silk :)

thanks DD & co.

here's how I did it:

-install from Leopard [i've started it as a faithless install, before writing a preboot cd...]

-bootloader: PC-EFI_v10.5

-kexts: no kext for graphics [after reboot I have inserted efi string in com.apple.boot.plist]

-DVD[iso] install: unchecked everything

-on first reboot> flag '-s' >'buildcache' >'reboot'

-for graphics: inserted efi string in com.apple.boot.plist

-re-run the script > DSDT patch >reboot

-open a beer > Cheers !

You should at least put LegacyATI4800controller.kext in /Extra....

Or try the pkg from Netkas

http://netkas.org/?p=212

Take also PCI EFI v.10.5 boot file and

in com.apple.boot.plist you put

key>GraphicsEnabler</key>

<string>y</string>

Thanks for your ATi flashtool !

I don't seem to be able to even get to my SNL permissions. I just booted in SNL again.

Attempts at authentication results in the following error:

"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -60008)."

Running disk utility on my SNL target volume from my running Leopard gives an instant report that the permissions are OK. In truth it doesn't seem to be running at all. I can't get EFTTOOLS or OS86Utilty to copy over so I Can't use that either. At this point I am going to try again after erasing the target volume. I can't understand why I am getting blocked out?

I also tested iTunes and it isn't playing any songs. Meaning, when I launch the new iTunes installed with SNL, I can see my iTunes Library. Clicking on a song leaves it in Play mode, but no motion on the play meter and of course no sound.

This might be a newbie question. I'm running 10.6.2 and everything works fine but sleep. I set it up using the 4.2c script.

Now if I wanted to use the 4.22 script with all the updated stuff (bootloader, fakesmc), how would I go about doing this? Should I just move my original com.apple.plist over to the new folder? Run the entire script from step 2-6 with the new script?

Or should I just use my old 4.2c script (which works), transfer the new fakesmc, bootloader over and run step 2-6?

Do I need to disable spotlight or do any of the rebuild cache from the startup I had to originally?

Just downloaded DD's new script. Did not replace it with the apparently old KEXTS download. Got a failed install. :)

I wouldn't worry about this "Failed Install" message (if it's the one I'm thinking of), as it just means the installer tried to change the boot target and failed. It will always fail on a hackintosh - if you go to System Preferences/Startup Disk, you can't select or change your startup disk as it can't write to the non-existant EFI firmware.

can i get an assit with this? Where do I look for fakesmc.kext or dsmos.kext?

I see SleepEnabler.kext in Extra/Stored_Kexts , do i need to delete it from here?

thanks

Updated script download has the latest fakesmc.kext

You can delete the SleepEnabler.kext from /Extra/Stored_Kexts and then, "Rebuild boot caches".

Or, just go to script's "Kexts_10.6/Misc_Patches" folder, move it to the repository folder, and run "Kext/kernel Installer"

RE: WIN 7 not being visible at boot screen. That's odd. It's partitioned as NTFS, right?

I've thought about this issue, too, and realize it's not very simple if you have an existing setup you must keep or want to keep.

First decide if you want to keep your current kexts/setup. Likely many are going to already have a working setup that they do not want to alter. If you do, then just delete or move the kexts in the new script to their repository folders. Then, fill up with yours.

Otherwise, move your current script folder to a different location (save it just in case) and replace it with the new script.

EDIT: If you want to update/change bootloader, do that now. Then, do a Kext/kernel install with the current setup. Reboot and check for issues. You may need to make changes, depending on your setup. YMMV. Those two steps are the only steps needed: Bootloader install (if desired) and kext/kernel install. That's it. No partition activation, boot cache update (done via kext installer), or DSDT update are needed.

If the only changes were in the script itself, I would suggest to just replace the current script. But, there are lots of other changes: bootloaders, add EFI strings, relocated files, etc.

The bootloader install now allows you to keep your currently installed boot.plist and smbios.plist, instead of always overwriting them.

If you have any suggestions or ideas to make this simpler or automatic, let us know.

Progress; I made a successful install, left all my files behind. I took the advice to migrate everything and fix permissions later. That helped. Now I can install things on the new volume. First thing I tried was the "NVIDIA 9000 Series Driver v2". Forget where I got it but it installs several NVIDIA drivers. It made me restart when it finished. No luck getting back in though. I got a white screen with the silver Apple logo and the spinner. It was that way for well over 30 minutes more than once. So, I am now going to reinstall (erase first) and try it again. This time I will experiment with the EFIStudio.

Re-submerging (till later)

Were you just updating SL or installing SL from Leo? There appears to be an account permissions issue here.

RE: permissions

Have you run the following in SL with the install DVD/ISO mounted?

sudo open "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/BSD.pkg"

You won't be able to fix SL permissions from Leo.

I haven't tried it, but after the above command, you could try in Single-User mode booting into SL:

diskutil repairpermissions "/Volumes/SNOW_LEOPARD_VOLUME"

Try the -v flag during boot, so we can see what's happening.

Plus, I've never waited more than 30 seconds after the last line spits out before restarting with something different. In my experience, if nothing happens within the first minute of inactivity on the log, all bets are off regarding any progress.

One thing I have to do is track my exact install routines. There are four options with the script, chameleons old, new, newer and .. one other. I have tried them all but AFAIK I am mostly choosing the top one (Cham v4). Saying that because the last time I erased and started over it booted to a white screen with the Apple logo and the spinner. It actually worked too till I put in that NVidea driver set.

What is the difference with the four versions and what is the difference with the system default and the efi method? Mostly I guess I Want to know which one I should stick with to remain consistent and successful.

This time it did the slow boot where it draws all the lines across the screen over and over and over again. Then it goes relatively more quickly. Although it appears it hit a kernel panic, stalled out white letters still on the black background.

ADDED CODE: OK, back again. Here is where the boot is stopping now. I am skipping what I hope is unimportant stuff and writing down as well as I Can the last several lines. The curser stops below the last line below. No return or key input of any kind will take. I have to force restart it when it gets to this point:

Appleintelcpupowermanagement
	 Debugger Called <panic>
Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame, Return Address (4 potential args on stack)
	 0x78763f08
	 0x78763f58
	 0x78763fc8
Kernal Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies) com.apple.driver,Appleintelcpupowermanagement

BSD Process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
	 Mac OS version:
	 10A432
Kernel Version: Darwin Kernel Version 10.0.0 Jul 31, 2009
	 System Model MacPro4.1
	 System Uptime in Nanoseconds: 20459407140

HI MAJ and thank you for the script update

I have a updated script with different audio kexts in the audio folder now. Try them. They are just a "HDAEnabler.kext" and "LegacyHDA.kext" and should work in /Extra!

I worked for me.

I downloaded the script 4.22 and run option 5 to install kext and rebuild (Normal) cache

First time I ran the script I got a KP so I rebooted and the sound was working (I only tested rear analog output).

To be sure, I ran the script again, and this time no KP, it worked fine.

Note that with the RealtekR1000.kext in /Extra ethernet was not working (was displayed in system prefs, but shows up as "not connected".

Changing the path to S/L/E solved the issue.

Thanks again.

I've solve that [switching the bootloader to Chameleon'04], but I've discovered that the 'shutdown' function is not shuting down completelly the computer [black screen, power-led is on, some vents still running...I'm analysing the problem and I'll return with more details...

thank you

Erasing it all again, starting over (again). ;)

The code I posted above would suggest a kernel panic related to a power issue. But that is my best "guess". I fully admit my noobish naiveté.

I think it would help if I understood which choices were best for my board setup. The script, wonderfully provided here at the start of this thread, allows a few branching off places. I have this GA-X58-UD4P with a 920 chip. I honestly don't know if it matters at all and if it did, which install parameter I should be going after here? System with extras, EFI, Chameleon old version, v3, v4 (?). ;)

Thanks.

I'm running a HIS 4890 (matches reference card: tv out + 2 dvi) and it worked using this method although I haven't tried it for my RAID yet. You still have to add the QE_CI_for exotic cards 10.6.2 or something like that otherwise you'll be stuck with bad resolution and obviously no QE/CI.
