[GUIDE] Scripted Yosemite/Mavericks Install on Gigabyte Mobos

Which version of the script are you running? What's your HDD setup?

@Locus

Good to hear it worked :)

I can't exactly remember how I got my Appstore running again in Mavericks (it didn't accept my ID first). Regarding iWork download, I just created a spare user account on a real Mac with old iWork, "purchased" the new apps and swoosh - they appeared on my hackint0sh :) Remember you have to change system language to english temporarily.

Thanks, not as though I use them often, I have other photo editing software that I prefer, but its the principle  :hysterical: , I paid full price for Aperture !

The AppleRTC fixed my Mavericks sleep issues - works on manual and auto with no CMOS reset problem  :)

Also the BT (macbook blue tooth card) module supports wake on Bluetooth Magic mouse/Trackpad and doesn't have the dongle drop out issues (or sleep / wake / lost connection issues )

Just need the Clover/ Appstore (iWork/Aperture 3.0)  fix to iWork and I'm good (apart from wifi airdrop but I don't need it)

I followed this guide to create a Clover USB.

Howdy All,

I've been off the forums for quite some time as I finally bought a mac book pro and no longer rely so heavily on my Hackintosh. My hackintosh is still running fine with 10.7.3 on it.

I would like to get Mavericks on it and use it as a sever in my home for iTunes and Video(GoPro stuff)

In the past i've had issues with different video cards. Will my current card work with Digital Dreamers latest script?

XFX HD-687X-CNFC Radeon HD 6870 2GB GDDR5

Any other specific advice for my build?

OS X Lion 10.7.3
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield | GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 | OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3
WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM (x3) | XFX HD-687X-CNFC Radeon HD 6870 2GB GDDR5

I'd be happy to pay for some help in getting my hackintosh upgraded, does that sort of service/site exsist?

thanks!

The components are still fine fore a hackint0sh installation. Corncerning your graphics card, ic can't help, but the rest of it will work quite OOTB if you follow this guide. Provided you only want a OS X installation so you can use GUID partition scheme, it's really rather simple. The script now is so stable and usable with this motherboard - really no miracle installing Mavericks.

Personally, I prefer doing the first clean installation of an OS on an external hard drive though. I partition it as MBR (installer won't boot from GUID USB HDD) and create 2 partitions: 1 installer partition (this is where the boot cd created by the script goes) and 1 service partition (this is a clean OS X install). You can create all this from your running install - you have to make sure to patch the boot cd image though, to support install on an MBR HDD.

You then boot the installer environment and install OSX to the second partition. If you have to install some kexts while getting a KP for example, you can always do this from the running installation. Once it works, the hardest part is done. You can now back up and delete your current installation. Then you just repeat the process and install to your final target drive. Now your USB install can serve as a service OS if something goes wrong. Finally, you should have a clean OS running.

Provided you have a time machine backup, simply use built in migration assistent and transfer your data. With a little practice new installations, updates etc. are really no problem.

Hello MaJ,

Just want to say that I found some kext updates for EX58-UD5 mobo.( OSX 10.9.1)

<snip>

Thanks for those updates, @ROBASEFR!

So the EX58-UD5 seems to keep going  :D

<snip>

Well, some of us are kinda poor! :D

But, you know, single-threaded CPU performance hasn't really improved that much in the last few years.

Still, I'd like a new Haswell-based system.

<SNIP>

In chameleon bootloader, I can see "Fusion HD" AND "Fusion HD 2" (no difference when booting though). How can I fix this?

That's a feature, not a bug. :P Seriously, it's normal.

The bootloader is going to list/show all the helper partitions you can boot from. A RAID or FUSION drive will have, at minimum, two helper partitions and that's what you are seeing. The helper partitions are the actual partitions that contain the booting files, like the booter, kexts/kext cache/kernel cache, boot plist, DSDT, etc. The Finder will ignore them, as they don't contain user files.

Hackinstaller script shows "Fusion HD" AND "Fusion HD (Fusion Drive)" when editing plists, but I can only choose one install target.

Okay, two things:

1. You should only be able to choose ONE install target for the Fusion drive. So, that is working correctly.

2. The two "Fusion HD" showing up in the plist editor is a bug. The one with "(Fusion Drive)" should be the correct one.

Now, this is what I'd like to fix. However, it's really hard to script in support for a Fusion drive when you don't have one. So, getting feedback, like this one, really helps. If you can provide me your install log, that will be even more helpful. (#15 View logs; #6 Copy all logs to desktop; zip and send to digital (underscore) dreamer (at) mac (dot) com)

Could you also briefly explain how "Boot OSX" partition works? Where do "Extra" folder and boot files have to be located to work correctly?

The "Boot OSX" partition is the default name of the helper partition.

The script should be placing/installing the same /Extra files at the root directory of each helper partition.

If this is not happening, you will not be able to boot from that helper partition when you select it at the bootloader screen.

Let me know if you are experiencing issues here and provide your install log.

Another issue: hackinstaller does install kexts correctly when not changing install target. As soon as I "change" install target (I actually can't choose from different ones, because there only is the fusion drive), it gives "can't install with no OS installed" error.

Edit: My duplicate "Fusion HD" might have shown up after I tried to install bootloader a second time, after "changing" install target and receiving "no OS installed" error.

Not sure I understand exactly what you are experiencing here. Can you elaborate on this further? What do you mean by 'installing correctly when not changing install target?' And, are you getting the "no OS installed" error on a drive that has the OS installed?

Still can see duplicate "Fusion HD", they identify as hd(0,3) and hd(1,3), which are "Boot OS X" partitions.

Again, this is normal. And, BTW, you can change these names, if you wish. Just mount it from the script and change it in the Finder. The script will update and stay in sync.

Also: should there be UUID applied to bootloader plist? Hackinstaller created boot-UUID flag, but did not apply UUID.

For a Fusion drive setup, yes. Is that not happening?

If you are able to boot your Fusion drive setup, then the UUID is doing its job pointing the booter on the helper partition to the partition where the OS is installed.

What do you mean by creating a boot-UUID flag, but not applying the UUID? Note that UUIDs are used for different purposes. In this case, the boot UUID is used to identify the drive the OS is located on and should boot to. This is not to be confused with the Platform UUID, which is a unique identifier for your system.

Hi,

Thank you MAJ for you work with this. For me it works perfect except for one little irritating defect.

My problem is that Installer doesn't run properly in 10.9 and 10.9.1. Any one else that has experienced this, and more important, any one sitting on a solution?

Can you expand on your comment? "Doesn't run properly" is a little vague. What installer are you referring to?

SCRIPT UPDATE:
UPDATE: 1/13/14 - version 8.0.7
  • No actual updates to script - just bootloader and kext updates for 10.9.1. (However, script is updated to v8.0.7 to reflect the following kext updates.)
  • Updated Chameleon v2.2 bootloader to r2327.
  • Updated AppleHDA.kext to 2.5.3fc1 for Mavericks 10.9.1 (ALC885/889a). Note that this 10.9.1 audio kext is part of the default install, so if you are still running 10.9.0, use the older kext in the repository folder.
  • Updated FakeSMC.kext to 6.0.1067, which includes new HWMonitor app.

kind regards,

Anyone with a GA-EX58-UD5 using my v5 DSDT, modified for AppleLPC.kext to load as of 10.8.5, having problems with manual and automatic software (Finder, pmset and Energy Saver) sleep, but sleep by briefly pressing the the power button still works?

If there is a solution please share, thanks.

d00d, I am using it as so far it works, I did update the dsdt with the lpc update. Now on 10.9.1

Thanks aikidoka25.

I did some more tests and found that there are two issues.

1. It takes longer for the machine to go to sleep in 10.9.x, about 20 seconds, compared to almost instantly with 10.8.x.

2. Using Remote Desktop to get to the machine and selecting Finder:Sleep just darkens the screen, compared to almost instantly sleeping the machine with 10.8.x.

Solutions to sleeping the remote machine;

A. Use Remote Desktop:Manage:Sleep.

or

B. While not using Remote Desktop do the following;

[mac05:~] me% sudo pmset sleepnow; exit

Sleeping now...

logout

Connection to mac05 closed.

[mac07:~] me%

<SNIP>

That certainly has been my experience as well. Wish I knew why. It appears Mavericks is allowing more time for processes to gracefully save their state and quit, before killing them off if they don't.

Due to this delay, many users were convinced their systems were not going to sleep at all.

Just a heads up to users using the latest script and Chameleon bootloader r2334 on AppleRAID:

I just noticed that I couldn't boot into my ML install on AppleRAID, until I reverted back to r2283.

It would just get stuck at the very beginning of the bootloader screen where the cursor is supposed to "rotate." Instead, it just blinks the underscore - no progress.

Don't really know what's going on here, but I'm looking into it and wonder if others have experienced the same symptoms.

Hey guys,

I also still use my UD5 and can only recommend trying CLOVER as bootloader. I described a how-to here.

Some things changed since then. The devs updated the way how to config the config.plist. Now, a lot of the options you can just toggle on/off by setting it to true or false.

As I said before, you will only need FakeSMC and IONetworking as kexts and the rest should work. You don't need to care about all the PowerManagement kexts and AHCI patches etc etc. Trim support and other fixes can just be turned on in the config.plist.

Use Clover to overcome this, once it works in Clover the subsequent update can be done with Chameleon.

Thanks  :)

After about 3 days of messing about I managed to get clover installed on an SSD disk and booting. I now have iWork and Aperture downloaded from the Appstore and stuff working as per chameleon, but it was a challenge in that it is more configuration dependent than before (e.g I have real apple network, bluetooth and airport cards installed plus I had to match uuids and and  serial numbers etc to get everything working - App Store, iTunes, cloud, messaging etc)

Once I got them matched App Store downloaded the stuck apps (Aperture, keynote, pages & numbers) without issue. I had tried nvram libraries with chameleon but couldn't get them working with Appstore

I decided to go for it and I migrated everything to a clean new sata 3 SSD HD so the system feels a bit quicker as a result

I recommend the black_green theme for Clover, sure is pretty  :thumbsup_anim:

PS - I recommend downloading the Clover Configurator tool - makes life easier

After a few hours testing different parameters I find sleep works, however a couple of funny cosmetic features not resolved yet

1 - I can't get rid of the orange icons (external disks) using  same DSDT as the chameleon boot (even on chameleon the Sata 3 SSD shows up orange though)

2 - Sound wasn't working at boot using the same DSDT as the chameleon boot, however after running Darwin Dumper it just switched on during the probing

3 - Processor shows as 2.67 GHz Unknown in About this Mac (works on chameleon)

Guess it will give me something to do in the next week or so ... apart from that everything else seems fine

( Just running clover with as little config as possible - lots of trial and error , FakeSMC and DSDT )

Thanks MAJ for your detailed answers! Will try to support you with feedback. All issues so far are just cosmetically, my System is working 100% now - REALLY happy about this :) (sleep is so cool!)

Thanks you so I know this is normal. Seems like I can't hide the second helper partition via chameleon though...

Please see e-mail.

This happens correctly. However, I wonder if /Extra also needs to be on the main Fusion Drive partition I can see in finder? (It is present there) As far as I understand, only boot helper partitions are relevant for boot.

Not sure I understand exactly what you are experiencing here. Can you elaborate on this further? What do you mean by 'installing correctly when not changing install target?' And, are you getting the "no OS installed" error on a drive that has the OS installed?

Please see mail. It seems to be possible to install to a wrong "ghost" target drive after "changing target". Now, that I now duplicate partitions in chameleon are correct behavior, it's not really relevant anymore.

Please, see mail.

Kind regards and thank you for all the support. Hackinstaller already achieved 99.9% perfection for me :)

Having updated to mavericks a while ago i have only just noticed that i was no longer able to sign in to app store, icloud, or messages using my ud5 system.

I was already using the chameleon nvram module, was used to be enough to get sign in to work for mountain lion.

I have now got sign to work under mavericks by using EFI studio to generate and EFI string for the network interface.

This process is described in various forum posts.

It was more complicated for me as i needed to generate a combined efi string that also included my nvida gtx 285 graphics card.

Cheers

  • 3 weeks later...

Just a tip, I managed to get Airdrop showing up with and older Mac WiFi and Bluetooth card

Can't claim credit for it though , see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3331216

type the following in terminal

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1

killall Finder && open /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app

Unfortunately Apple don't yet support Airdrop between iOS 7 and OS X which is a pity

BIOS F13 binary update

kind regards,

MAJ

Haven't been here in a while. Got my first hack working in 08 and it still is dependable. Still at 10.6.8 SNL. Downloaded Mavericks some weeks ago, but cannot get it to install. Someone suggested updating my boards bios might help. I have tried this board's vanilla method first, then at least three other script installation methods and so far, nothing works. I get a moment or two then a flash of a white screen then a reboot as if nothing happened.

Been a while but pretty sure I am running the GA-EX58-UD4P.  http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2986&dl=1#ov Not sure how to tell for certain but that is the version of UD4P that supports my 920 i7 so, very likely so. This thread has drivers for download (thank you). I still have a floppy but the desktop wont tell me that it can read it so ... I don't remember how this is done? I know I did it before. 1) is there a primer somewhere how to flash the bios on this board and 2) is the BIOS F13 on this thread going to work on my board? I think I last used F8 but like I said, it's been a while. beaucoup thanks.

UPDATE: Discovered I am running F5 and it is an EX58UD5 BIOS so ai am going to try the F13 from the script. I still don't remember how I got it onto the floppy though, trying the USB at boot.

2nd UPDATE: It will not boot with the USB formatted other than Extended Journaled. Extended Journaled lets me into QFlash but only shows the floppy drive. FAT formats but it just hangs, and hangs, and hangs. So my question remains, how do I get this F13 BIOS onto the Floppy to update my BIOS? And, once I do that, we can hope that it will take Mavericks updates, but right now, who can say?

Hello ZoLives,

For your board de latest (official) Bios is :F14P  here :  http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2986&dl=1#bios

Here is the flashing guide for Gigabyte mother boards:  http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/27576-bios-flashing-how-qflash-guide.html

My method : (Qflash from Bios setup menu)

First:

To use USB in Qflash you need "Legacy USB Storage Detect" Enabled in the Integrated Peripherals Page of the BIOS. ( so verify before ! )

You also need to leave the USB drive plugged in when you reboot to Qflash.

You can verify this to go into de the Bios setup menu ( hold de Delete key when booting)

Chose also Optimized defaults and save /exit with F10.

So Before reboot to get in the Bios Bootmenu:  Put in your USB key - (dos Fat32 formatted) with your Bios .bin file on it.

  • boot up with Delete -key : Bios setup menu comes up again
  • Flash with Qflash (F8) from de boot window
  • Look for the bios bin file in USB key - Enter
  • Confirm flashing old to new bios  Fxx to F14P
  • Confim flashing
  • Reboot  to get in the Bios Bootmenu
  • Config the bios settings with Optimized defaults loaded and then like explained on the first page of this topic.
  • Virtual bios config menu for your MOBO is here : http://www.jzelectronic.de/jz2/html/bios-help-ex58-ud4p.php

Success

@ROBASEFR

Personaly I use moded bios for latest material bios support

1. Intel® RAID ROM 13.1.0.2030

Just updated to 10.9.2, nothing bad happened, just took slightly longer first boot

It appears to fix the safari SSL issue that was reported on the news, https://gotofail.com reported  fail on 10.9.1 and now says safe

Seems to have fixed a problem with connection to one of my email suppliers

I appreciate it. I stayed at F13 as F14 is still saying it's beta so, one less problem (for now). What I did not understand right away, the bios I got from this site was already to go - but not the latest. When I downloaded the F13 I had to send it to a friend with Windows (It was an exe file). He unpacked it and sent it to me. THen I put it on a USB stick and used QFlash, no worries there. So, thanks.

I have been working with one person on an older thread and, this thing is not booting. I even figured 8 Gig USB sticks are realtively cheap so I tossed $20 at the problem and have four USB stuick braiands to try, no joy anywhere.

I can run the Maverisks installer and point it at one of my two internmal drives. IT lets me run the install and asks me to reboot. And then on reboot, ehen I choose the dirive it just installed on I get "cant parse PLIST" error.

I have no idea wht the problem is ... (explitive deleated) :censored:

Just for info, I'm in the process of giving my Hackingtosh an upgrade as it was getting a bit slow for my current needs

I had been doing some video editing with Final Cut Pro, Motion 5, mObject etc and 12GB wasn't enough, I had to shut things down to get a reasonable speed.

So I decided to swap my original 12GB Corsair for some 8GB sticks of Corsair Vengeance RAM

The EX58-UD5 is quoted as supporting 6x4GB of RAM (24GB) . That seems a bit understated by Gigabyte because I've just upgraded to 32GB (4x8GB) and now plan to move to 48GB next month

I'm also swapping my old ATI Radeon 4870 1GB for the SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition

http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/product_index.aspx?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1157&pid=1777&psn&leg=0&lid=1#

yes I could have probably used the regular 7950 but to be honest I just wanted it to be stable and hassle free

Just going to give the RAM a torture test before swapping the video card

Edit - I compiled the N body simulator from the apple developer site, unfortunately it doesn't stop eating RAM at 32GB, kept ongoing to 140GB before I stopped it and maxes the cpu  :hysterical: , at least the new RAM works and it isn't as painful as just 12GB was

Now to swap the graphics card

Installed the 7950, big improvement on the OpenCL N body simulation (I'm interested in doing some OpenCL programming)

with 4870 I was getting a score of approx 77, with the 7950 I was getting a really smooth 477 so I'm happy with that, feels like a new machine

Just makes you wonder what a couple of FirePro W7000 would be like on the new mac pro, I thought about getting the W7000 but it was another £200+ so I thought the 7950 would be a good bang for the buck at £290

For info, I had to change GraphicsEnabler to No (it was Yes with the 4870) otherwise I got a black screen

I may overclock my i7 920, currently running at a stock 2.88GHz for the past few years, may try to push it up to 3GHz

Hey Locus

I'm also looking for bit of speed bump on my EX58 UD5. Can you hook me up with links to the exact products you bought (Im in UK too) and can you confirm both RAM and Card are stable and work out-of -box without too much hassle (aside from changing GraphicsEnabler to No) .

cheers!

Hi Petre

I did a check on Google for best price and it was amazon, where else  ;-)

I paid £281.51 free post from a seller called Trusted Tech (last one I believe - quick delivery), having checked they have no more and the next best price on amazon is £308

if you look here you will see that some are selling at less than £300

https://www.google.co.uk/shopping/product/11433253530452994774?q=Sapphire+Radeon+HD+7950+Video+Graphics+card+3+GB+PCI-Express+16+DDR5+MAC&cr=countryUK%7CcountryGB&client=safari&rls=en&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.61965928,d.d2k,pv.xjs.s.en_US.mRllcBPSixs.O&biw=1336&bih=942&tch=1&ech=1&psi=zisPU4HDNqGH0AXerIGoAw.1393503183090.5&ei=2isPU8-COZKBhAeky4DoBw&ved=0CFYQpiswAA

513 FPS compares quite well with a 3GHz + mac pro with similar card (my hack is running at stock speed)

One thing to note, the sapphire is a very nice looking card (better than the windows cards with all the fans etc) but your power supply will need two x six (6) pin pci-e power connectors which I had on my Hyper 880W psu. The old 4870 had a 6 pin and an 8 pin power connector

Apart from that its plug and play, just change graphics enabler = N in your boot plist

You may want to check out the windows version of the 7950 - I believe they will will work but I did read that there were some pci-e bandwidth issues ? (I'm not bothered - seemed like to much effort when this works out of the box)

The RAM is this (note CL=9 there is a cheaper CL10)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0085IWXB8/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Again, plug and play provide you put them in the correct slots 1,2,3,4 for 32GB

I'm using Final Cut Pro, Motion 5 and motionfvx ( http://www.motionvfx.com/store,plugins,3,60,1,1.html ) plus Xcode with no trouble

I have an SSD on my spare instance which would be faster but this is just on my old SATA drive, I assume the SSD would be faster
(I don't use the SSD since it has clover boot loader and for some strange reason the sound doesn't work ? )
