METHOD #1: Install via Preboot CD:

This is arguably the easiest method, particularly if one doesn't currently have a Mac. You can create a bootable ISO with the script via Create boot disk (menu #15) or download any of the following pre-made preboot ISOs and burn to CD:

  1. Boot the Preboot CD and use the BIOS Boot Menu (F12) to select CD-ROM drive.
  2. When bootloader appears, eject your preboot CD (via manual eject button).
  3. Insert your Mac OS X Retail DVD and wait for the activity light on the DVD reader to go out or stop flashing.
  4. Press F5 to rescan drive. Your DVD should now appear.
  5. Press ENTER to boot your Mac OS X DVD.

  6. In the installer and under the Utilities menu, make sure your target drive is partitioned in Disk Utility using the GUID Partition Table (Options button).
  7. After installing Mac OS X, reboot into the bootloader with this CD again. Make sure you are really booting from the CD by using the BIOS Boot Menu (F12). Otherwise, the boot will fail with a kernel panic, because the kexts (from the CD) did not load.
  8. At the bootloader screen, select your new install by using the arrow keys and press ENTER after it is selected.
  9. When you reach the desktop, copy the HackInstaller script to your Desktop. (If you create a Preboot CD from the script, it will create a copy of the script on the CD for you.)
  10. Follow the instructions for using the HackInstaller script above.

I do not get to run the graph with PrebootCD.

Use extensions: Natit, LegacyATI4800Controller, EVOenabler, ATY_Init, ATI4800Controller and always I get this image.

<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Instant Menu</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>-v arch=i386</string>
<key>Legacy Logo</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>SMBIOS</key>
<string>rd(0,0)/Extra/smbios.plist</string>

If I boot with-x the graphic work.

Regards,

Happy New Year

A lil off topic but what processor, RAM and video card would go best with this board and tutorial? I will be editing 1080 60P AVCHD footage. How do these sound?

MOBO: GA-EX58-UD5

CPU: Intel Core i7 920

RAM: DDR3 1600

GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT 512

Hey there, fellow editor here.

Your processor will work extremely well, it's what I've got running in my rig and has been fine for all 1080p footage I've been shooting with my DSLR. While I havent used many camera's running your codec I doubt any issue will arise.

How many gigs of RAM are you planning on getting of that DDR3? Anything 4gb or above will work fine, but I'd recommend putting in at least 6gb to make your rig a little more future proof.

As far as your GPU is concerned, its you're most outdated part. Do you plan on just using Final Cut (or any non-linear editing system) or also doing any visual effects work with AE or even something as serious as Maya/Cinema 4d? If you're just cutting I think your GPU should hold up fine but it would definitely be the first part I'd upgrade once I get the chance.

Hope any of my words help!

Hey Guys! Happy New Year

Okay so currently I am looking into expanding my video editing rig into also doing some serious audio work. Currently my Gigabyte UD5 has some nasty popping when I have either headphones or speakers plugged into them so I am looking into getting a sound card.

Are there any specific sound cards that I have to get since this is a Hackintosh and support is limited?

Also I need to get some firewire 800 ports onto my rig. I am looking into a PCI card that would give me some, will this need specific drivers like the sound card? Or is there a brand that would work just plug-in-play?

Thanks guys!

I ran into something quite strange again a couple of days ago.

Last time I wrote here, I had just solved my installation problem. The solution to getting my usb disk to actually let the computer start and not stall on POST was to install Chameleon 2 rc5 r426 (earlier versions made the computer stall at POST, I couldn't even get to BIOS settings with the drive plugged in).

Now, feeling a bit like experimenting, I tried to install r691 on the same external drive that I used to install to my internal raid setup (don't want to risk my working install not working anymore – this computer is used for work). And the same problem came back! If I start the computer with the usb drive plugged in, it hangs on POST (I forget the number, but it's "initializing usb" so obviously has something to do with the drive).

I am completely dumbfounded as to how a certain bootloader installed on a drive can make the computer fail POST. If anyone has an idea what's going on here, I'd be very happy to hear it.

Have you considered devices like the Tascam US 122 (USB) or M-Audio Ozonic (Firewire) instead of the traditional sound card? You can find the US 122 for the price of a high-end card. I use both these devices on my hackintosh and am really happy with the quality - like you I had a bit of click and pop with the on-board audio.

Lacie do a small FW800 card that is OSX compatible but I've found any with Texas Instrument or Oxford chipsets do the business.

Hope this helps...

The GA-EX58-UD5 is very sensitive when it comes to boot sectors. At least this is what I have observed, just make sure that the USB-dongle is formatted with the GUID partition option.

Hey thanks for the recommendations! I'm checking out those Tascams (122 or 144mkii) now and they're looking pretty sweet.

I also checked out one of those Lacie FW800 cards and they looked to be around the same price point as the TI and Oxford chipsets, but I read from one review that the Lacie's don't allow a Mac to go into deep sleep? I'm not even sure what the hell DEEP sleep is so I may just take this review with a grain of salt but if that PCI doesn't allow the computer to stay in sleep mode, that would be quite an issue. Have you or has anyone heard of an issue like that with these PCI cards?

But seriously thank you Big Kev. You pointed me in the perfect direction

These are my current PC specs-

Intel Core i7 930

GB X58A-UD7 Rev. 1.0(BIOS Version-F7)

6GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM

GB GTX 480

2 HDDs-

  • WD Caviar Green 1TB SATA 3Gb/s
  • WD Caviar Black 80GB PATA

Now I have iAtkos S3 and I want to install SNOLEO on the 80GB PATA HDD. Is that possible using this guide(if not please help me out)? I can also install SNOLEO on my 1TB SATA hard disk on a 20GB partition which is currently occupied by Ubuntu. Please reply :)

I'm using this FW800 card -

http://uk.startech.com/product/PEX1394B3LP...re-Card-Adapter

Since upgrading to DD's 5.01 script my hackintosh (very similar to your spec except OC to 4.25GHz and a nvidia 285) has worked perfectly - no problems with any of the power mgmt or sleep functions. I have 2 external FW800 drives and the M-Audio Ozonic on the FW400 permanently connected. I regularly connect a DV camera to the on-board FW400. No problems except it slows Win 7 boot times noticeably.

Glad I could help.

Thanks, but of course it's GUID. How else would it start up fine with r426? I just tried going back to that and it works like a swiss watch. It's really strange that certain versions work and others don't. I think I'll try another newer release, just not r691.

Yes I have updated flawlessly :D and as you can see the appStore is running perfectly. To those using my setup, you can go ahead and update without any issues. :P

I'm still on 10.6.3 without sleep enabler, can I just run the upgrade? I have a UD5 and GTS 250.

Well you should be able to if you are using native power management and have all third party kexts in /Extra without any issues. I am guessing you are using EFI strings for your GPU or auto injection via the bootLoader.

I have multiple fw800 drives and devices on my ex58-ud5, I simply purchased a pci-ex1 card that was revision 1.1 and 1.2 compatible that also stated native OSX support. Choose one that had 1394a and 1394b (800) ports on it (3 ports, 1a (400) and 2b (800), never had a issue, the only thing I can even mention is that in the logs, I get a firewire device uid 000000000000000000000 invalid, I've searched for dsdt edits, and basically, not come up with much, but like I said, 100% compatibility and support, hd camera's, external drives, all plug and play. never a issue. Im looking at my box right now for you, and its so generic, it doesn't even have a "brand" other than "Best Connectivity" PCI-Express IEEE 1394b Firewire controller card. Ahh, there we go in the corner, its using the TI XIO2213 firewire 1394b chipset, hope that helps.

Nice-- thanks for sharing. I just prepped a drive with 10.6.5 last week, haven't installed it yet into my hackintosh (which is still running 10.5.7). Went to do it last night and discovered I don't have any HDD screws to put the new drive in with, haha.

Here's hoping I can just update to 10.6.6. If not, I still have 10.5.7 to fall back on until I get things sorted with 10.6.6.

What's the best card one can get and still run it with EFI strings on the UD5? (When I first built my hackintosh, only nvidia cards could use those strings anyways, it seemed).

To all those on Cruisar fakesmc installs...

I'm not seeing temperature sensors for the CPUs in iStat after upgrading. Anyone else having this problem?

Cheers

t.

Hi Cosmin Petre, everything seems to be working fine from my end, see the screen shot.

Sorry I should have said, istatmenus.

If I use istatpro (like your screenshot) I can also see temp of CPU 1 and CPU2 but not 3 and 4

Strange. Definitely worked fine before update.
