borissatan
Not sure why you MUST use AHCI, if you search it does seem to be the easy option, I've never had a problemwith it. Not sure how you find it adds an extra 3 minutes either. I timed my boot from pressing the power switch to desktop and that only came to just under a minute with AHCI I haven't used DD's script so I'll leave that to others but if you have access to a SL machine and are comfortable with terminal and basic unix then you can easily install by hand, there's nothing magic about it Cheers for the quick response :censored2: I don't understand it either but AHCI is REALLY slow searching through my disks. I'm on BIOS 7, maybe I need to upgrade that? I'm just coming back to unix - its ten years since I used it in any depth so I'm almost starting from scratch really. I've just made another two usb install discs which I'll try out later when I get home. This is such a painful way to do it but I haven't got much choice, unless someone can recommend an alternative? There are a few bits of the instructions I find a bit confusing - will post some more questions tomorrow if these dont work. Cheers MAtt

As far as AHCI is concerned, I don't know a reason, but it must be in that mode for the install to work. I noticed you have an IDE DVD drive, SATA is the better choice to start with (at least until the JMicron kext is loaded). You didn't indicate which video card but Nvidia ones are the easiest to get working. The usual result with an ATI card is once the install is done and one is booting into SL for the first time, everything loads and you get to the point where one should see the Apple Welcome screen and the video goes dark! It's actually working, but there is no video.

LocusOfControl
By the way there seems to be a Mac Pro Audio update via software download to reduce cpu load - thought it was 10.6.3 at first Just installed it and audio still working after reboot - I'm using native apple audio so don't know what it will do to 3rd party sound
atlee
Many thanks. I tested it and here are my results (greetings go to d00d and dd also!)- Reboot doesn't work - No Network card (I didn't try to put the realtek kext to S/L/E/ because it is not in your zip file) - Sound as you said doesn't work AND text in the different ComboBoxes are only in english instead of the french Mac OS X standard texts. I know d00d is reading this thread... I will try again, as soon as Snow Leopard 10.6.3 comes. ============= By the way, using DD kexts: The sound comes via S/PDIF out and it works great with iTunes and DVD Viewer, but the sound crashes as soon as I see AVI files or Flash video (youtube) and only under 10.6.2 (64 bits). With SL 10.6.1 it was correct (using SL 32 bits). Can somebody helps? I have revision 1.7 of this board, Everything works fine for me, You must have a different revision, My network works out of the box, My restart, shutdown, sleep all working perfect without any extra kexts, latest BIOS My sound also works with the included VoodooHDA 0.253, but 0.254 is also out but does not work, might have to edit it abit. I only use a English setup. The only kexts needed for my setup are: fakesmc - required to boot orangeiconfix - to fix orange icon, not needed really. but looks correct in terms of what icon shows. hope all gets everything working, If your network does not work, use DD's Realtek1000 kext. By native I mean no kexts other than the apple SL kexts - you only need FakeSMC for decryption You need to edit your DSDT to describe your hardware, take a look at d00d's thread, page 1, everything you need is there, you just need to invest the effort to understand and do this I've found it more stable as you are using apple's software as opposed to third party software IMHO Note I only use 2.1 sound which is all I need

I could do the same and i might but change his green jack to correspond with my green jack by changing the hex number, but i wish there was someway to get the card to fully run natively, but i guess apple never released a 7.1 soundcard right? VoodooHDA is good but very low in sound. appleHDA is louder and clearer, i will have to fiddle. I've also run the update through software update and all is well. It's actually working, but there is no video. Yeah I'm using a passively cooled 9400GT 1GB graphics card. Ok more craziness this evening. FIRSTLY: DigDreamer method: Made two more usb EFI installations today on an SL Mac Pro and when I plug them into my machine at home the computer locks up. It doesnt matter when I do it (eg before power on, during boot, in BIOS control, selecting boot device, etc) is this normal??? I certainly can't use either to boot from AHCI or no AHCI. I had a peak at them in Gparted and they look fine with a 200MB-ish EFI partition (boot flag selected on both - although it wasnt on one for some reason) and the installations looked fine to my untrained eyes at work before i brought them home. Is this normal behaviour? I would have thought the pc would just ignore any USB device it couldnt boot from, no? SECONDLY: I tried the Kakewalk method. Oh how excited I got to see there was a windows iso. (windows legacy iso). I burnt that and ran it and it started to load and got as far as saying @mounted@ and just stopped. Didn't get anywhere near asking for SL Install disk. This is starting to really irritate me do I really need to go pick up a sata DVD burner? It's something I'll use about once a decade (once I've got this bloody thing working!!) Cheers Matt
everdone
Yeah I'm using a passively cooled 9400GT 1GB graphics card. I have not used the EFI method on 10.6.x as I found it to be very 'flakey', namely, it didn't work as I expected as I had used EFI on an EP45 board with 10.5. I would suggest investing in an 8gb thumb drive and using the USB stick method. Since you have access to a Mac, make an image of the OSXInstall DVD and restore it to the USB drive. Run the Kakewalk installer and install to the USB drive. Once home, boot from the USB drive and you will arrive at the Mac Installer. You also have access to the utilities menu so you can use Disk Utilities to partition the HD. Do a custom install and install just the basic plus the Kakewalk material that was installed to the drive earlier. No need for additional languages, fonts or print drivers. Once installed you should be up and running when it reboots.
Qianlong
I wanted to ask if the white jmircon powered sata ports on the UD5 should be used or not. I'm running out of blue sata ports and was wondering if it was ok to hook a sata drive to the jmicron ports. I'm not planning to use raid or anything like that. I remember reading about the white jmicron port problem on the older 10.5 thread, I'm not sure if it has been solved with Snow Leopard?? ThomasRolinger
I just went through this tutorial and set everything up, working great. One problem though: I have 4 harddrives in my setup: 2x 250GB WD's used for operating systems; at the moment, only one of them has anything on them and that is the drive I used to install SL and what not; the other will be used for Windows and at the moment, is formatted as NTFS and is void of any OS. The other two drives are 1TB WD's. On my first boot into SL, the two 1TB drives were unformatted. I got into SL just fine and everything was working smoothly (no kernel panics!). I decided to would like to make use of my storage drives, so I formatted the 2x 1TB's in disk utility as I normally would for any drive using my actual Mac (formatted as mac os extended journal). The drives mounted perfectly fine and everything seemed good; all 4 drives were detected and shown. I decided to test rebooting the machine to make sure I wasn't experiencing an extreme struck of luck. The problem comes in when I get to the "Verifying DMI pool data..." screen. It hangs up there and skipped the screen that allows me to enter into BIOS. I know that this is caused by hardware issues. So I unplugged both of the 1TB drives and I can boot perfectly fine into SL; still worked even having the NTFS formatted drive plugged in, so it is isolated to the 2x 1TB drives. So, is there something I did wrong to make the computer hang up on the verifying DMI pool data? Is there a particular way I am supposed to format the drives? Is it a known problem for rebooting to hang after doing such things? Any help is appreciated. Well your issue could be reltated to one thing. What order have you plugged the sata cables into the sata ports? 2x WD Caviar Black 1TB could be pluggd into ports 0 and 1 thus the waiting for DMI pool Data. This happens when the system cant find boot Loader on the first boot Device. 2x WD Caviar Blue 250GB could be pluggd into the sata 2 and 3 ports. zoro2
Hey all, thanks for all the past help in resurrecting my drives. Been error free for the most part for .. a month? Regarding the discussions on DSDT, I have the DSDT SE app, don't know if there is a better one but this seems a good choice. I have seen some discussions about this but not an actual tutorial. Is there a link for this? My sound has been working well. My first installation had some problems and I had to reinstall a few times to get it all working. Now I am getting back into some pro audio stuff and now I am noticing that the sound may not be set up as well as I thought. Using a Focusrite Saffire DSP, a Sure Mic, and Logic Express I have been recording some audio books. The problem is that, during playback (Mic disconnected) I have my KRK monitors outputting sound via the Focusrite driver for out as well as input. But they also have the system alerts set at very high volume. I can adjust the sound for the tracks via the Focusrite Saffire control panel. But I am no longer able to touch the sound level for system. There appears to be no settings to adjust the system volume when used with these drivers. I thought I was going to blow my speakers the other day, or my hears. I was listening to what I recorded and an alarm I had set went off with just a click - sounded like a gunshot. I have looked in the obvious place, the system/sound panel. There is a setting for system sounds that is separate from input driver selection and output driver selection. It very clearly says "Sound Effects" and allows a choice of all the same sources as the IN and the Out. So in theory I should be able to choose Focusrite driver for audio in, Focusrite driver for line out and line out (the normal speaker output) for system alerts. But it is not working this way. The system alert and system sounds work through the same as the external, whatever that is set to. Just now I have set the output to non Focusrite as I don't have a recording session scheduled at the moment. Back to DSDT. Assuming this will tell me all I Need to know once I follow a tutorial and find errors pertaining to my sound board, is this rather large file something that I could take and paste into a word processor , edit, and return as save (and use)? What I really want to know is whether it would work to use Panorama, my favorite database app to make something for creating a macro to crunch the data in a very large file rapidly. Pan is Ram based and it imports a 10k text file faster than you can get your finger off the mouse button. It crunches data and exports it just as fast. But again, I need to read more about what has to be done, what sort of errors I should be looking for, etc. Thanks.

Kakewalk, Empire EFI etc all seem to do the same thing: If AHCI is disabled they boot fine (from cd or usb) to the OS selection screen - then when I try to install OS X I get the grey "please restart your puter" screen. With AHCI enable neither the CD or USB will boot - I get the "mounted" thing with CD and the USB drives do not even flash so are not even recognised in AHCI mode. Why on earth would USB drives not be recognised in AHCI mode???!! This is truly baffling. They're drives I've formatted on a SL Mac Pro. Could it be my BIOS revision which is F7? I've also upgraded my optical drive to a SATA one but it made no difference so that was a waste of time. Please help someone! Matt Oh yeah and I've tried connecting my SATA DVD drive to various of the six main SATA ports (0,1, and 5) but it makes no difference. ThomasRolinger
Well I am able to boot in SL fine now with my 1TB drives hooked up. A weird problem now is the screen with the Gigabyte logo, where I am able to press del to enter BIOS, is completely skipped during start up, so I can't get into BIOS. I did a CMOS clear and was able to get in, but as soon as I restored my settings, it does the same thing. The only things I am changing from factory standard settings are what is shown here http://idisk.mac.com/digital_dreamer/Publi...Peripherals.gif SATA RAID/AHCI MODE to AHCI and Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode to AHCI. Any idea why the BIOS/logo screen is being skipped? The computer beeps and starts up normally, but it just skips to the screen right after the logo. Also, I am having some trouble getting my internet working. As far as I know, BIOS (when I am able to get into it) is detecting the connection in my ethernet port just fine, and I have the Realtekr1000SL.kext in the appropriate location, as well as updated the boot cache and rebooted. Any suggestions are appreciated.
