[GUIDE] Scripted Yosemite/Mavericks Install on Gigabyte Mobos

So I want to dual boot Windows 7 and SL. I have my HDD partitioned off already and I have a SL disc and I can borrow my friend's mac. Can I perform the installation this way (without Leopard installed on another HDD). If so, how can I do it? The installation instructions just start reading off step by step but it doesn't say if I start off running the patch on the mac or pc; sorry that I am probably confused on probably the most basic stuff, its my first time trying to do this and I've been on so many different tutorials trying to get this done.

I guess the higher score is the higher cpu speed

 

So do we say that the 4870 and the 285 are similar on a Mac and both are OK

 

On the other thread I posted, a lot of people were complaining of poor performance in SL, which in

comparison to Leopard does seem slightly slower. I think I tried in Windows a few months back

and I seem to recall that SL was faster (although I could be mistaken - I don't use it often)

 

So I guess I should be happy with the performance then

Yeah I went out on sunday and bought a SATA->USB docking stand for the HD and did just that. Although I don't know if I the AppleRTC.kext is being used. How can I make sure it is used?

Also, from what you said, I assume once it is booted I then put the script on thumb drive along with all the other files and then run the DSDT portion?

Make sure the AppleRTC.kext is in the /extra/Stored_Kexts then run the script and rebuild caches on the drive. The AppleRTC keeps your cmos being from being reset after the DSDT is built you can delete the AppleRTC.kext and rebuild caches again.

Thanks. I will do that. How do I get to the single-user -s so I can build the cache? I was stuck at that stage because everytime I select SINGLE USER from the boot menu I was launched into booting. I can't seem to get to a prompt the let me initiate a boot with parameters. I selected the PC EFI boot loader when I made the drive.

but currently I'm running at stock as I don't need the speed at the moment

 

I think some of the posters here with D0 i7's are doing well over 4GHz though

 

I have 12GB RAM which may be the cause of the failure, I haven't bothered trying messing with voltages

 

probably also depends on what heatsink you use etc

It doesn't show a boot menu? the other way would be to mount the drive in the mini and rebuild the cache from there.

DD's script stopped responding (even after rebooting), so I decided to start over. I reformatted the drive and updated my bios to f8. Now when I try to use the boot cd, I can't get past the Apple logo screen. The DVD is not being accessed. I went back to check the BIOS for changes. AHCI is turned on. The only difference I can see is that HPET is enabled and I don't think it was before. Any ideas?

 

I figured it out! Just in case anyone else runs into this problem where you're trying to use the preboot cd method and the SL Install DVD won't boot:

 

It was my DVD/CD burning software that I had installed in Windows 7 on another hdd! I bought a new blu-ray drive for this build, and I installed all of the Cyber DVD software that came with it. I also installed AnyDVD. One of those programs must add a preboot process to check for the blu-ray player, because as soon as I uninstalled that software, I was able to use the SL Install DVD again. Weird! I hope this information helps someone else.

Have you checked your sound prefs (on both panes, output and sound effects) - see pic

Wow! Almost 100 pages. I've been monitoring this thread off and on since it's inception. I've been slowly getting all the parts together for my Core i7 Hac Pro and last night finally took the plunge. I'm not a total noob (been using Hackintosh's for over 3 years) but I'm constantly amazed at the amount of knowledge out there. One can easily overwhelmed.

 

Firstly, thanks to DD and all that have contributed so much useful information. I'm hoping some of you out there will indulge me and help me get my system working 100%. I've got a Core i7 920 with the GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard. A couple of 1.5TB drives, a GeForce 9500 GT. For the most part everything is working. Here's a very abbreviated list of how I installed:

 

1. Tried installing iATKOS (I didn't have a Kalyway install disc handy and was too lazy to download it). Could never get it to boot after installation and gave up.

 

2. Tried several boot cd but none would work...they would all hang at "boot: done".

 

3. Stumbled upon the Empire EFI boot cd and that allowed me to boot up the Retail DVD and install SL.

 

4. SL booted up fine (but I had to boot from the Empire EFI cd).

 

5. At this point I had crappy graphics (as expected), no sound, but my Ethernet was working just fine.

 

6. Ran DD's script these options:

 

(2) Install bootloader - Chameleon 2.0 RC3

(3) Set Partition as active

(5) Run kext/kernel installer

(6) Update boot caches

(7) Run DSDT patcher

 

7. Reboot and I now had sound... but still can't boot from the hard drive. Have to boot using Empire EFI cd.

 

8. Manually installed NV Enabler kext to /S/L/E to get my graphics working (tried to add the EFI strings to the plist but didn't seem to work).

 

 

So here I sit, typing away on my new Hac Pro with two main issues:

 

1. Still can't boot from the hard drive. I've set the drive as the first boot device in the BIOS but when I boot it doesn't seem to see the drive at all. If I hit F12 and manually select the hard drive to boot from i get the "boot: error" message and it hangs.

 

2. The OS only seems to see 1 core. At least that what I think is happening. Activity monitor only shows one. iStat Menus and CPU-X only show one as well.

 

Edit: I see this when the computer boots which makes me believe something is seeing all of the cores:

Edit: I just booted into Linux and it showed the correct CPU info (i.e. all cores).

 

Edit: Just remembered a third issue. I've got a Linksys WMP54GSv2 card that in the past (with Tiger and Leopard) was recognized as native Airport. SL isn't seeing it at all. (To be honest, I haven't tried reseating the card or moving it to a different slot). Not that big an issue since I've got ethernet working.

 

Thoughts, comments, anything useful (or not) is appreciated.

First verify whether this is a hardware or software issue. If you have another working OS to boot into, do so and check for network access. If you don't have another OS to boot into, the BIOS may feature a LAN check that you can use. Consult your motherboard manual for instructions. NOTE: On the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard, LAN failure is a common problem. The remedy is to simply pull the power cord (or turn the PSU switch off, if it has one) for 10 seconds. Failing that, you may clear the CMOS using the CMOS Clear Switch on the back panel after the system is powered off. Make sure you have saved your BIOS setting, so you can load them after the clear.

Are you really using RealtekR1000.kext ?

 

Is it really installed in /Extra as your picture shows

 

Are you running in 32 bit mode or 64 bit mode?

 

Have you tried turning the power switch off for 30 s?

It sounds like you haven't installed a bootloader on your hard drive.

 

Assuming your mac drive is disk0

 

A) Download Chameleon and untar and gzip it, then cd to the directory, look for boot0, boot, and boot1h

 

fdisk -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdisk0

 

C) dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2

 

D) cp boot /

 

Feel free to replace the chameleon boot file with netkas' one

And as I illustrated in my earlier post, CPU-X only shows one core.

As you can see the option to show multiple cores as one item is grayed out because it doesn't think there is more than one core. Aside from the activity monitor, no other application I run thinks there is more than one cpu core.

 

I'm fearing the worst (the CPU is bad).

If u used DD's script to install the bootloader it should boot up fine if u have that as your first drive to boot up

Reimaged one of my evga i7 sli machines over the weekend and noticed that the About this mac dialog now shows "Quad-Core Intel Xeon" I attempted to use the option in the script to set it to i7 920 but no luck. Runing 10.6.2

One of the changes made in Cham RC4 was auto CPU detection. The name used is actually the same as those in Apple hardware. So, the "Modify Mac model name" isn't going to have any affect here. I don't know, presently, of a way to override it other than using the previous bootloader versions (RC3).

 

USB Boot UPDATE:

 

I upgraded the BIOS in my EX58-UD5 to F9P and used the USB Boot Builder in DD's script (v4.22). After that, darn thing worked. Ironically, I just sold the whole rig. Now I just have to hope the X58A-UD5 doesn't have the same problem.

Install the networking kext in /System (S/L/E), not Extra, and that should fix it up.

I'm not finding "cpus=1" in the boot.plist but this brings up a good question. Just which com.apple.boot.plist is being used?

 

To narrow things down, I disconnected 2 of my 3 hard drives so only the drive with SL is connected. I tried restarting the computer and I get this:

 

boot 0: GPT

boot 0: testing

boot 0: testing

boot 0: error

 

 

I manually installed Chameleon and it still won't boot. Maybe I'll try one more time with your script and see what happens.

 

But here lies my confusion. There are 3 potential com.apple.boot.plist files that could be involved here.

 

1. The one on the Empire EFI cd I'm using to boot the machine.

2. The one in the /Extra folder on my hard drive.

3. The one in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration on my hard drive.

 

I've double checked all three and none have "cpus=1". As a matter of fact, none of them have "-v" in the KernelFlags section either yet when my computer boots, it's always in verbose mode.

 

So can someone help me out here. When I boot off the Empire EFI cd and then select my SL installation from the list I'm presented with, just what com.apple.boot.plist file is being used when SL boots? One would presume the one in /Extra but why is it booting in verbose mode when I don't have the "-v" switch in the KernelFlags section?

my pane did not change at all. pane looks like it is just a single monitor..but both monitors are displaying the same image.
