CruiSAr
I have now the SL retail version. But is .dmg file. ( 7.1 GB )After i read a lot of stuff about installing,i decided to give it a try with Empire EFI. I download it,i have it already on the CD as bootable, but here i'm stuck. I'm asked to insert the Snow Leopard -press F5 and continue. How could i change the .dmg file in .iso ? I tried with Magic ISO,converted in .iso , but from 7.1 GB remained only 900 MB ?? (I have only Windows XP,now ) Okay, let's say it's compressed the image, whatever, but now .... how do i get this image bootable ? I mean, when Empire EFI ask me to insert the Snow Leopard, that means, this image what's on the DVD must be bootable, right ? I know i'm close, please help me guys Cheers. lemraqq, I think you should try googling for things like these, DMG is format used by mac's as image files, in order to burn it or extract its contents on a windows OS, you will need to do some work. I pm'ed you the link and next time google until you cant find it then you can post and ask for help. I guess you are also here to learn ...right? Charliefoxtrot
I'd like to add another "Thank you!" to this already enormous post. I followed the install instructions, updated to 10.6.2 and then installed the sleep kext. Everything works great, and no problems so far. Thanks to all the people who have added to this knowledge base. It made for a smooth easy install.
AviLan
After applying the software update and installing the default 10.6.2 update some apps started to quit unexpectedly, especially Quicken 2007. Tried all kind of things and finally d/l the 10.6.2 Combo Update, fixed all my problems. Now if I can only figure out why the DVI output on the nVidia 9400 GT is not working once the OS is up and running (Bios, Chameleon and boot list is OK and than black screen). The VGA output is working just fine but its a VGA. This behavior BTW is happening under different nVidia kext.

Lyle M
USB Boot UPDATE: I upgraded the BIOS in my EX58-UD5 to F9P and used the USB Boot Builder in DD's script (v4.22). After that, darn thing worked. Ironically, I just sold the whole rig. Now I just have to hope the X58A-UD5 doesn't have the same problem. Would also be nice if the i7 930 shipped now and NVIDIA dropped the price of the GTX 285 to $199. While I'm wishing for things, wtf happened to all the flash-able ATI 4890 cards? I noticed a few posts here about problems booting from USB media on the UD5. Here's what I've observed so far: Problem effects USB flash drives AND USB hard drives. Problem appears specific to HFS+ (GUID) formatted drives with a bootloader installed - PC-EFI 10.5 in my case. The same media reformatted to HFS+ or FAT32 with no data passes POST. Problem description: Machine hangs during POST if OSX86 bootable USB media is present. Hang occurs the instant USB becomes active (right after CPU speed is announced). USB flash drives will blink several times immediately following the hang. Hang only occurs if BIOS is set to USB Storage = ON. Same media with bootloader does not hang on POST on other non-UD5 systems. Same media when connected via eSATA passes POST and is bootable. I hope to find the specific cause, and hopefully a workaround. When there's time... Before I do, can anyone contribute additional clues to help guide my troubleshooting? If it's too far off topic, just PM me and I can post the final synopsis.

Try burning with Toast Titanium then if that doesnt work, try burning it on a friend's mac or take your spare disk out and put it into an external usb enclosure and run DD's script from a friend's mac. Sorry about you feeling disappointed, you should have probably bought yourself a mac from the start . Rome wasnt built in a day you know. Craig4
what kind of benchmarks do people get with opengl extensions viewer. I find mine increase as I overclock thei7 cpu. I asked this question before on a dedicated thread when SL came out, I never got a response though I was thinking about ATI and Nvidia diffs On a 4780 I get about 183-5 at stock cpu speed, faster if overclocked that seems low for a 4780. I have a 9800gt and got
LocusOfControl
that seems low for a 4780. I have a 9800gt and got 205 Is that at your signature speed of 3.5GHz? the speed I quoted was for stock 2.66Ghz cpu As I mentioned, if I overclock I get a higher speed which makes me think the i7 or mobo is the bottleneck I have had about 228 @ 3.5Ghz see my earlier post from Sept on the OpenGL thread see http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1280180 I was hoping to compare with another 4870 or equivalent Nvidia card (260??) at similar cpu speed ie 2.66 or 3.5 GHz

fallchild
I installed kalyway on one hard drive and installed snow leopard using dreamers script. After trial and error i realized i needed to add evoenabler to my s/l/e folder to stop the graphical corruption. That worked great and for some reason the ethernet wouldnt work but sound worked great. Booted into my leopard install and redid the snowleopard install, went fine booted up and ethernet worked great. But now i have no sound at all.. doesnt make sense and when googling i find 200 diff ways of people trying to get it to work. Why would it work fine one install then not work on another install? We all have the same mobo i assume lol so why doesnt audio work right off the bat like everything else pretty much does? thanks
bbchucks
Not 100% sure but in the preferences pane go to the displays pane and uncheck the mirror screens, or check expand desktop to this display something to that effect. I believe the default for osx is to mirror the display just gotta tell it to extend. thanks for your response! yah i went to the preferences pane but there was no setting to expand or take mirror off. the pane looked like it only showed 1 display was connected. Should look something like that Maj Reimaged one of my evga i7 sli machines over the weekend and noticed that the About this mac dialog now shows "Quad-Core Intel Xeon" I attempted to use the option in the script to set it to i7 920 but no luck. Runing 10.6.2 any thoughts on this ? (I have only Windows XP,now )Cheers. That trick for changing the filename in order to burn on windows only works with uncompressed dmg files. The Snow Kitty dmg file that you wanted to burn was a compressed dmg. See windows does not know how to uncompress dmg and therefore you are sh#t up a creek without a paddle. Go on your friends OSX and burn with his computer, its dual layer. Or just get a usb key and restore to the key with disk utility.
VirusX
hey cruisar,i did a new install with 10.6.2 and voodooHDA in System. Frontpanel headphones are working and the other output devices are "digital out" and "SPDIF out". but i got a 5.1 surround speaker system with 3 audio jacks (standard 3,5 mm). If you still have AppleHDA.kext in /S/L/E, then Voodoo.kext won't load. hey, I'm back and still struggling getting 5.1 surround sound to work. as described above, voodooHDA.kext is in system and appleHDA.kext is removed as well as any other audio kexts! I even installed a "voodooHDA.prefpane". (attached) could someone with working 5.1 sound point me in the right direction and/or upload their kext(s)? thanks in advance! Dalgar
Hey folks. I have been at this now for about two weeks and I am frustrated. I have: Target System: GA-EX58-UD5 Patriot: 6GiB 1600 nVidia GeForce 9400 (I downloaded the kext for this) Power: Thermlake 850w HDD: WD 1.5 TB Sata DVD: LiteOn 24x DVD Sata Mac Mini with SL to build the Hackentosh Boot HD. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I initially started with the buildahack with their video and downloaded files. I ended up making a thumbdrive install image. It booted then sat there with the pinwheel. Obviously I did something wrong. In their video they mentioned the BOOT 132 disk.... So I did some searching. Couldn't find a BOOT 132 disk. Ran across this posting here. I thought WhoooT I hit it. Well I printed off the instructions, downloaded the files and followed the steps. Hmmmm.... Seems my knowledge is lacking. I've only had my mac mini since last October. So, some of the technical things are beyond me at this time, but I've never let these things stop me as I know I will learn these things. What is beyond me is 1) I get the Chameleon boot screen, but I can not get to the point to enter the parameters. Regardless of which option I choose I get into a boot cycle. It ends with a system uptime in nano seconds. And the CMOS has been reset. I though this was supposed to not reset the CMOS. Maybe I did something wrong? 2) I plan on going back and trying again. But, I keep reading about the BOOT 132 cd and I finally ran down a couple. Both are over 8GiB and a DVD only handles 4GiB. So, how am I supposed to use these iso's if I can't burn them? 3) Can anyone point me to a step by step of making a BOOT 132 CD? I've been searching the net via google and reading the boards but I can't find anything except "grab your BOOT 132 CD......". 4) Kext Files. Like I said I grabbed the kext file for my video card. How can I make sure that is the one used on my build? Is there a specific folder I need to put it into for building the Boot HD? 5) I keep reading references to the plist. It sounds to me that this is a pre loader file. Simi liar to the old boot files on Windows. 6) The DSDT file. Since I am attempting to build this with the X58_Motherboard_Patch method I cannot install the DSDT since that step requires the drive be mounted on the target system. When I pulled the drive off the mac mini and put it into the target system I booted into Chameleon. I thought I would be offered the chance to do the DSDT file, but wasn't, Do I need to install Windows on the target system and build the DSDT file with a utility that I've read is out there? Also, I guess at that time I can use EFIStudio to get the efi string for my video card. If I do this what would be the additional steps I need to do to get them on my buidl properly? I apologies if these are things you folks already know about, but all my research the postings assume that I should already know all these things. Well I don't, but I am trying to learn, so any help would be appreciated. Even just a nudge in the right direction. I am not afraid of hard work. Thanks for your input. Cheers! Skip the dstdt step but use AppleRTC.kext until you boot the hack and build your dsdt using the script.
Dalgar
Hey AppleGuy. Yeah I went out on sunday and bought a SATA->USB docking stand for the HD and did just that. Although I don't know if I the AppleRTC.kext is being used. How can I make sure it is used? Also, from what you said, I assume once it is booted I then put the script on thumb drive along with all the other files and then run the DSDT portion? Cheers!
