Josvdp
Just don't forget to change your kext to the 10.6.2 compatible one. I take it you mean just the sleepenabler.kext? if thats the case should I take it out of the extras folder before doing the update and then run the script again afterwards adding the new one? is running the update from software update OK? cheers - I think it's safest to first remove the kexts from the Extra folder, run DD's script (update boot caches) and reboot. - Then install the combo update (just download it from the Apple website. - Place the 10.6.2 compatible sleepenabler.kext (from the latest script package) into the Extra folder and run the update boot caches again. Josvdp
I know for certain my system uses the bootPlist in Library/Preferences/Systemconfiguration. When you find it, copy it to your desktop, then replace the one in L/P/SC with the one from your Extra folder that is assuming you already have your efi strings present in the bootPlist in your Extra folder Thank you CruiSAr, that seemed to have done the trick. I now have graphics working with the EFI string and sleep works with both 32-bit and 64-bit with dual displays. So my install was using the boot plist in L/P/SC after the 64-bit boot. Funny how it just magically changes that itself... There is one more problem though, read further please. I have done a similar installation (using DD script), but sleep does not work perfectly.System goes to sleep and awake "normally" but after a wake up I get a Kernel Panic: - When I try to launch an old power pc application (Epson Scan Utility v2.77 for my Perfection Photo 2580 scanner) - or randomly immediately after wake up. The only difference I can see from your configuration is the bios version (I am running the F8 bios revision) Any idea from where my problem can come from ? (I really miss the sleep feature...) Could the Bios be the source of the problem ? I am not really a fan of beta versions of bios, and I would prefer to wait the final F9 release. Thanks PS: Here is some softwares/hardware I am using that uses some additional drivers and could be the cause of the problem - Parallels Desktop v4 - Little Snitch v2.2 - Epson Perfection Photo 2580 scanner - Brother HL2030 laser printer - Wacom Graphire pen tablet - Contour Design Shuttle Xpress (jog/shuttle controller for final cut) - Bluetooth dongle Cellink BTA3000 - Dual display (DVI + Vga) on a single Nvidia 9500 GT 512Mb DDR2 video card through home made EFI string (using NVFlash and NVCAPMaker) I have the exact same problem I have noticed. After a sleep, I get a kernel panic after a random time (and also when I tried "Detect displays" and put in a USB device). So we seem to be having the same trouble. Argh! I really want sleep to work, that's very important to me. Your graphics card is different than mine, so it can't be that. Or is it the fact that we use an EFI string for it to work? That's the only thing we have in common. Oh, ja and the Wacom tablet, but that wasn't even plugged in yet when I got my first KP. Have you tried putting boot.plist in Extra ? This is where it should be, the other two are apple versions which youwant to override, remember to set permissions to 755 and owner 0:0 You don't need a script to edit it, it's just a text based file. try vi from terminal, or the plist editor (ie right click on the file, open with Property List Editor) ATY_Init and some other graphics kexts are 32 bit only and won't work in 64 bit mode, I use the inbuilt graphics support of PCEFI boot file etc which is 64 bit, up to you though I don't use EFI strings in boot.plist so can help with that All the logs you need are in /var/log eg kernel.log Thanks for the reply, but you do know that DD's script puts a boot plist in Extra by default, right? I think we misunderstand each other. But it is working now! I didn't use the ATY_Init, I deleted it before the install. I'm very much of a n00b so I really wouldn't know how to get graphics working other than using an EFI string. I have to look into that soon. Fair enough, I'll take your word for it Just that I thought you said your system was picking it up from somewhere else other than Extra which is strange and a bit unreliable if you don't know which copy is being picked up for future edits and if some future update overwrites it. I don't understand though why this suddenly happened and how I can undo it. But when I read the start post by DD I discovered that it's not uncommon. Do you have any idea why I get random KP's after a wake-up? I have the same Motherboard and CPU as you and you seem to have sleep working flawlessly! zoro2
Is is Critical that I either find a way to reboot into my old RAID set up or figure where the encrypted dmg file with my passwords stores it's key. New year and bills are past due . I know, my own stupidity for forgetting the password and using it daily on a system that remembered it. Really stupid of me, I think we can all agree on that. And, I need to get it right again as soon as possible. In Leopard, when you store a value in a keychain, as in encrypting a dmg file, where exactly is this stored? I tried swapping in some keychainn files and no luick so far. What about the keychainsettings.nib file? THis contains files within it si I suppose it is actually a folder, anyway ... Please, and thanks much as always. ADDED: There was a discussion on the old Leopard instal thread where it was discussed how to get the disk ID of a smaller non raided drive and boot to that non raided drive which then handed off to the RAID drive. I cannot find that discussion on the old thread. If anyone knows this info and/or where I may find it, I would be most grateful. If I could just return to my old RAID drive and system files, I Could open my passwords db once again, and store it that way - NEVER again!!! Well, as the responses to this post was so overwhelming ... NADA - but I fixed it I know, seriously, I get lots of help here and I am glad that others do as well. I ran migration assistant this time on just some system files. Now I have to boot into a double account, which will remain confusing until I get everything solidly on the new drive (and registered - yay!!!) I still don't know how to boot raid but if I can now log into that disk account, it seems I may not have to anymore. Eventually I suppose I can split those drives back out for a back up - or use them as a raid back up.

Its probably because you are using NullCPUManagement & SleepEnabler kexts? I used to get that too, eg Safari when you have a web form and enter data, package installer, umount command (mount seemed to work OK!), third part apps etc. You need to mess around with your DSDT file to get rid of these kexts successfully though and it's an advanced topic http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=196771 Once I started using native Apple PM then that fixed things for me

Hi, yup that worked a treat, system is working great and sleep still works fine. replaced my GT120 with a Quadro FX5600 1.5GB Ram and works a treat as well. Very happy with install now so will CC Cloner it now so I have back up. Time to start cracking on with Digidesign Pro Tools now! Cheers
Phorte
quick question: i've been eyeing this thread like a hawk for a long time now in prep for my build. i have made a few threads with no responses. but how is the firewire functionality with this guide and the EX58-UD5? i will be following this guide and hardware recommendation to primarily run Logic with an Apogee Duet (via firewire). thanks in advance! Depends what you are doing. Also I can't recall which but 64 bit and 32 bit seemed to have different tendency to KP, one being reasonably reliable the other not so Maybe other people are using the more reliable version or not doing anything taxing

I had KPs soon after waking from sleep until I moved to apple native cpu power management. This involves patching the dsdt and removing sleepenabler and nullcpumanagement. rock solid now, but showing slightly higher cpu temps, but they never get out of control. I know it seems to be just a bit of copy and pasting, but (even though I admire d00d's knowledge on this subject) the guide is just written a bit too pro for me. A lot of the actions and techtalk I simply don't understand. I will try though, soon . If I'm able to get some additional help.

ryansimms
How not advanced do you want it to be? Just stick to DD's if you find d00d approach to be too cumbersome I think what we're getting at is not that we think d00d's method is too advanced to be useful, but rather that we'd like to learn in depth what's really going on when we're copying and pasting, but many of us don't have the base knowledge to pick up where d00d starts out. I think a beginner's guide would be welcomed in this forum, which after all is about sharing knowledge. Ryan!
zoro2
I am having trouble and I am wondering if it is my board, ram processor, ie hardware? After all the trouble I have had not being able to boot RAID, I thought I Was finally out of the woods. I Have SNL installed in my external drive and have mostly moved all my files there. But, I just had to rebuild the directories with Disk Warrior and that meant I Had to move to the G4 again and reinstall the boot device. No sound again - aarg!! But the real trouble is that it is now hanging on the Gigabyte screen, just hanging. I have been unplugging it, hitting CMOS and it still hangs, and hangs and hangs. IT is starting to look like it takes several attempts before it goes beyond the BIOS LOGO screen and boots. But I am talking unsubstantiated facts here. How can I tell when I am having a hardware problem vs not having something set up correctly in the bios? I suppose the bios might have become corrupted and therefore I could reload it or load a newer bios version? Is any of this making sense to anyone? This is my first DIY project. I just bought the board, chip and ram last April so it really should not be going bad already, should it? Hope not. Thanks for any insight I don't see.
