[GUIDE] Scripted Yosemite/Mavericks Install on Gigabyte Mobos

For those having problems with Installing Win7 whiles Your OSX drives are connected, You can use windows Vista Install DVD to Format your Win7 Target HD.

Of course its best to disconnect your OSX drives just to avoid confusion. Formatting with the Vista DVD eliminates the creation of the system partition that is created when Win7 is used. Reboot and install win7 to the pre-formatted Vista Drive :P

Works like a charm. Oh and this also allows you to boot your Win7 partition from OSX using parallels or VMware Fusion

Hi there!!!

Thanks for your reply!!! :D I have checked those posts, and I seem to have done everything properly, but I have a questión?

How I boot Snow Leopard in 64 bits?

I mean, It should boot in 64 bit mode if I don't put any flag such as "arch=i386", right?

I even added the flag "arch=x86_64" (without the quoute marks, of course ;) ).

The thing is that, when I check in System profiler, in --> Software --> 64-bit Kernel adn Extensions: says NO.

I'm not sure of that means that NO, not all my extensions are 64 bit extensions, or NO, the Kernel is not a 64 bit Kernel, OR NO, YOU are NOT running Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode.

Before Snow leopard boot, in -v, I see the legend" 64 bit enable", so, does it means that it's running in 64 bit ('cause I used to see the same legend even with arch=i386 in the boot.plist)

Any help would be very appreciated :D

Thanks for the script and guide. I've managed to get a 10.6.2 install working on the Gigabyte X-58 UD5 with a i7-920 chip and an EVGA 9800 GTX+ graphics board. I even managed to get Win 7 installed on a 2nd drive with no problem in a dual boot config.

Have a couple install questions though:

1.) I don't fully understand how to get the graphics board fully recognized. I noticed a bunch of graphics stuff in the extra/resources/GFX_strings folder in the mobo installer folder, including a 9800 GTX and a 250 GTS which I think could be appropriate. Have no idea what to do with that though ... can anybody help or at least point me to the right place?

Probably not unrelated: I have some nice HD video I am trying to watch and process into DVDs. Using apps that can read and play .mts files (or convert to avi or mov and them watch in quicktime) I get what looks like jumps in the video or maybe frame skipping. But the one DVD I made plays fine on my TV with no frame skipping.

2.) Does the drive with the bootloader have to be plugged into the SATA 0 port or can I plug it into any of the red ports (not JMicron) and just tell BIOS to boot from the appropriate drive?

No means the system is running the 32 bit Kernel, in your bootplist, remove this line completely

<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>-v -x arch=i386</string>

Help please. I used DD's script to make a bootable USB Drive for Snow Leopard to install on a new machine. I understand that I'm supposed to boot from this USB. But once I boot to the USB drive, do I just run the SL install, or do I run the script again and install SL during that process? Thanks.

The intent is to run the OS Installer from the USB drive to do a full install. Restart, select your USB drive again to get into the bootloader, then select your new install from there. Once you have reached the desktop, you can use the script to install the bootloader and kexts.

Is it possible to get the sources for the 10.6.2 sleepenabler? It doesn't work on my EVGA X58 board. I have been trying to find a solution for this board for a while.

Those enablers were pulled from the New Releases and Updates page.

Lack of a EFI string for your graphics card is likely why you are having video issues.

The EFI strings can be assessed via script by doing the following:

1. Menu option #9 "Modify plists"

2. Select the boot plist your system is booting from (drive names and install locations are listed)

Select "A) Add a key or argument" (if device-properties key is not already in the plist)

Select "device-properties" from the list

Then, select "2" for "Graphics from nVidia"

The rest should be self-explainatory.

best regards,

MAJ

I noticed a few posts here about problems booting from USB media on the UD5. Here's what I've observed so far:

Problem effects USB flash drives AND USB hard drives.

Problem appears specific to HFS+ (GUID) formatted drives with a bootloader installed - PC-EFI 10.5 in my case.

The same media reformatted to HFS+ or FAT32 with no data passes POST.

Problem description:

Machine hangs during POST if OSX86 bootable USB media is present.

Hang occurs the instant USB becomes active (right after CPU speed is announced).

USB flash drives will blink several times immediately following the hang.

Hang only occurs if BIOS is set to USB Storage = ON.

Same media with bootloader does not hang on POST on other non-UD5 systems.

Same media when connected via eSATA passes POST and is bootable.

I hope to find the specific cause, and hopefully a workaround. When there's time... Before I do, can anyone contribute additional clues to help guide my troubleshooting? If it's too far off topic, just PM me and I can post the final synopsis.

Cheers,

Lyle

I had this exact problem a few months back with my UD3R. Problem was solved by updating bios to the latest at the time, which was F7 beta. But F8 is also working fine for me.

Sigh, looks like I'm going to have to start fresh. I tried using a boot CD to access my OSX partition but I keep on getting kernel panics. Time to completely format, install win7, iatkos, then retail osx..... :/

I don't know is the answer. I didn't use a script to install, nor did I use any iso's or usb thumb drives etc.

you don't really need it. All you need is a working leopard partition and the SL DVD. I did the install manually

To be honest I've seen this a few times, scripts and wizards can be useful initially to get you started but people

can become hooked on them and you end up learning the script rules rather than the underlying software.

It maybe me so no disrespect, but I prefer to do things by hand so I learn what is happening, it really isn't hard.

(but it did take a bit of effort to do lots of reading and research and trial and error etc)

Having said that, coming from a unix background many years ago when we used to write application harnesses etc

there is a use for scripts but IMHO it is automating repetitive stuff that you know how it works already.

I'm not trying to put you off the DD script by the way, just think of it as a leg up, then learn the real mechanics of the

underlying install. This will allow you to fix things when they go wrong.

I agree, and you put it quite clearly (and gently) I thank you for that.

I am in crisis mode just now. Notice, my new log-in as I am now shut out of my daily Mac. I have only one old working email account and there was no way to directly contact an admin person that I Could tell, so I had to sign up again just to get back and ask for help. And help I sorely need just now. Here we are at the end of the year with real work to get done, and running out of time. And, no booting at all. OK, here is what is goin on now. After my last post I redid my target drive again, rebooted after carefully marking what worked and what did not work. No boot or specifacally, it sat forever looking for the DMI Pool data.

OK, been here before, so I reboot back into my day to day working system, hanging at DMI pooling plus the four boot lines.

boot0: GPT
 boot0: testing
 boot0: testing
 boot1: startupfile_

Hanging on the last one also virtually forever. I have no way at present to get back into my system, none.

I drug the old G4 MDD out of storeage (thank God I still have it) and it took the better part of last night and this morhning to update old disks to get back online again.

I found an old Kaly iso and I was hopping to at least do a restore on my thumb drive from that file to boot from, but Disk Utility says it needs a heler app that is missing so, no good.

First, I need to get back into my system.

Second, I need to make absolutley certain I build and save out a bootable recovery disk so I never get here again

Third, I really hope I can get this upgrade to SNL to work and get back to work. It's been fun, somewhat, but I have been at this since a week before Christmas.

So, a little help from anyone, please?

Thank you - thank you - thank you.

Do you mean your ex58 board only has 1 hard disk with a broken SL install?

How did you install chameleon and OS X on your ex58 initially?

Why can you not repeat what you did initially?

You have an old Mac G4 which you are currently using?

You have an old Mac G4 which you are currently using?

My main (formally) daily running set up is a two (500 x 2) disk raid with Leopard.

Back up to external (eSata) 1 TB drive.

I tore down the back up thinking I could pretty quickly get SNL on it and move into a clean install. Phase two would be once the external is solid and booting well to go back to the raid set up and do the same from booting on the new external SNL volume.

I have been trying to repeat what I did last spring, though I am now doing my best to remember and to re-learn. I have some old iso's on my disks yet, was having a real hard time with the internet for some reason. I think I had to upgrade Little Snitch and now it is more stable.

Not getting any success from the chameleon or the bumby or the kalyway isos I have booted from on a thumb drive. I cant remember which worked long ago but it seems if I Can't figure out how to get this up again I Had best start from scratch towards the external drive in Leopard again.

I was hoping that someone might suggest a way I can think of. But until I get back to booting, I Cant do anything on my HT machine.

My old Mac is a MDD G4, Dual 1.25, 2 G ram, two internal disks and external bootable FW disk. That is the machine that was not allowing me to use DU to Restore. The warning I get is:

RESTORE FAILURE
Could not establish communication with helper tool.

But, here is what I would try. I assume you have a retail Leopard disk since you were previously running Leopard

Could you not install Leopard on your G4?

From there attach one HD to the G4 and create a new partition for SL on the newly installed HD

from the Leopard partition?

The alternate route would be update your G4 to leopard, create a retail leopard boot dvd aka slimbuild for

your ex58 to install on one of your drives (forget the raid - don't try running before you can walk - I'm assuming

you no longer have anything on them or can't use them?)

I just tried booting on the external drive (couldn't). IT has USB and eSata so I can run it on the G4 (yes the G4 sees it). Yes, the G4 is running Leopard.

I really hope that I am just having trouble booting for some odd reson. I cant even think that I could have just lost 7 months work. So, step one is to get this external ready to boot on the i7 system. Then, we shall see what we shall see. Not panicking - yet.

Yes, I have retail Leopard and Snow Leopard.

How to proceed? Either the old Kalyway, Brumby, Chameleon don't boot or, they dont boot on the thumb drive. Or, I have mis-aligned the way the files should look for boot. If memory serves this should be an iso file saved to disk then booted from disk? I have tried that on the thumb but as I mentioned earlier, having trouble restoring to disk with that systems DU, not sure why.

I am grateful and open to any and all suggestions.

THanks

I want to say Thanks to Digital Dreamer for writing this script! I wiped my whole system and started fresh with SL. For the first time ever, I've got a really stable build so far. Even audio is working this time around!

Some weird issues, though.

1. When I select to boot into SL through chameleon, while the OS is loading it shows me in text form (white text, black screen) all of the kexts it is loading up, etc. Is there a way to hide all that? I don't really mind, but it would be nice to hide all that scrolling text that shows up before the OS loads.

2. To switch into 64 bit mode, should I delete the arch=i386 lines from the bootplist? Do I need to add the arch=86_64 line?

Curious to know .. can I re-download this script and KEXTS and run it from this old G4 MDD (running Leopard)? I could still target the same external drive, now connected over USB. But I suppose I could go back to trying that. Sound reasonable?

Thanks

ADDED: Oh, Duh!!! No, the script will run but of course SNow Leo is not going to be allowed to install on a lowly G4. I reasoned that if I could get it on to the external drive, then boot from that drive on my Giga board, well, looking at the slimbuild option some more. I tried once building an image and dragging that to a thumb drive but it would not see it so .. maybe I will get some rest and try again first thing in the AM.

Keeping my ears open for any ideas and .. thanks again.

If you have retail Leopard & SL great

What I meant by connecting one of your drives to the G4 was that if you booted normally into G4's copy of Leopard

you should be able to see the contents of your newly attached disk (from your ex58). From there you could

decide what to next, ie try to rescue it or format it and start again

You should be able to run the chameleon RC2 package installer manually from the G4 side but pointing it to install

on the newly attached ex EX58 SL wannabe HD

Once you have the RC2 package installed you could then easily upgrade your boot file by hand

Can you see anything on the attached HD?

does anyone have internet running in 64 bit?

I think most people have been running 64 bit internet for some months

1. delete "-v" in your boot.plist.

2. just deleting should be fine. you don't need to add anything

Yes, I can see some basic stuff on that drive, Applications, Library, System, Users.

I can try the RC2 package, meaning choice 2 in DD's script? When I tried the PC/EFI the last time it seemed to put stuff on the drive, but it wouldnt let me install SNL as it is just for a intel proc. Would it be better at this point to go ahead and get snl working or try back using Leopard again? If it's all the same I would like to get the SNL install finally done with.

Although, maybe as the Leopard will install on this hardware, SNL will not - is that true? IF true then I guess I have no choice but to start over again with Leopard. ALthough, I should be able to be using EFI studio or OSX tools to put in the right KEXTS at this point, shouldn't I? The main thing is to get back to my old main drive and not to loose all my work. That drive (the raid) is still in Leopard.

I use DiskWarrior, or I used to, a lot. So it has saved my bacon getting this G4 back healthy. One thing that has long been a problem is how do I maintain my Hack build? AFAIK I cant use applejack or DW and I only know of ClamX as a antiviral. One very important learning here would be to understand how to make maintaining my system better.

Before you do anything

Do you have a folder called /Extra ? what are its contents?

Is there a file called boot in the root directory? what are the permissions of / and boot

Good point, forgot G4 isn't intel, not to worry if you can report on the above questions first

You need to have Apple kexts from SL in /System/Library/Extensions - which would have been installed from the dvd

You need to have hackintosh kexts in /Extra/Extensions assuming you went for a basic install (contents?)

You need at the minimum FakeSMC.kext in there, what are the permissions?

You need a file in / called boot, permissions?

You need a file called com.apple.boot.plist in /Extra what are its contents?

I assume this is your SL install we are talking about? (on this disk)

You need to actively learn how everything fits together which takes time and effort. But if you install it yourself

then there although it is harder first time, each time you install your understanding will grow and you will see

what looks right and what doesn't. Hacks aren't Macs and this is a price you pay

No magic wand I'm afraid

I have no folder named Extras. I have only Applications, Library, System, Users.

I have many extensions in the /System/Library/Extensions folder

I don't know where to look for a Boot file. Finder searches show Boot files which are UNix Executable files in all my other drives, but not the target drive.

Trying the script to set a different boot loader ....

trying Chameleon v1012 - showing no boot file ...

trying Chameleon System then PCI/EFI - showing Extras folder

Will try booting from this while awaiting a reply ....

trying Chameleon System then PCI/EFI - showing Extras folder

Will try booting from this while awaiting a reply ....

Sorry should have been Extra

It sounds like either you don't have a basic chameleon setup or you may have installed in the hidden EFI partition

what do you see if you type "diskutil list" without ""

you need a boot file in / if you installed chameleon in /Extra or in the EFI partition if you installed chameleon in

EFI/Extra

if you find a file called boot type cksum boot

edit: You should be doing this from terminal not spotlight. finder etc

ie

ls -ld /

ls -l boot

cksum boot

The intent is to run the OS Installer from the USB drive to do a full install. Restart, select your USB drive again to get into the bootloader, then select your new install from there. Once you have reached the desktop, you can use the script to install the bootloader and kexts.

Thanks MAJ. I wasn't sure and I was having a difficult time finding anyone else who had used this method.

Cheers,

Lyle

WOW! As soon as MAJ answered my question, I ran into this roadblock as well. I'm using BIOS version 7 and I can't post when the USB media is connected. Now what do I do? I'll play with my BIOs settings to see if I can get around this. However, if I can't, what else should I try. I'm using my wife's iMac to create the USB image. Can I put my target HDD into a firewire enclosure and attach it to the iMac to install the OS and bootloader?
