I'll try that out and report what happens.

OK.......that way we can try isolate the possible causes........

Try the following:

1) Disable all Ethernet related BIOS settings

On-Chip MAC Lan (Auto, Disabled) [Disabled]

Onboard LAN Boot ROM (Auto, Disabled) [Disabled]

2) Rename nvenet.kext to nvenet.kext.bad (as it is being loaded instead of the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext)

3) Reboot and see if AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext is loaded and you can connect via your NIC to the Internet

If not, then first try with AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext copied from IONetworkingFamily.kext Plugins folder and installed directly into /S/L/E using Kext Helper b7......see if it loads on bootup......

If this still does not work, then install the SL version of the Psystar R1000.kext into /S/L/E/ using Kext Helper b7.........

Hmmm, you must of edited this after your initial post as all I saw was to try the R1000 kext, which I did and it doesn't load either according to kextstat. Also no new interface detected. With the MAC Lan disabled, nothing works, even the NIC.

I'm wondering now if maybe the problem might have to do with the version of the card I am using, which is RTL8169SC? According to NewEgg, it should work with the Mac OS.

This is strange..........the onboard LAN settings should not disable a NIC.........I will disable mine now to see if my NIC is still seen.......

I disabled my

Onboard 1st nVidia LAN

Onboard 2nd nVidia LAN

both of which are normally enabled for Windows to use........or test OS X systems.......or Linux.....

As expected my Netgear GA311 NIC, which I use for my main OS X systems, shows up and works fine (with nVidia LAN enabled or disabled).....here is my relevant kextstat output:

69 1 0x7f543000 0x17000 0x16000 com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily (1.10) <7 6 5 4 3 1>

70 0 0x7f2b1000 0x6000 0x5000 com.apple.driver.AppleRTL8169Ethernet (1.1) <69 14 5 4 3 1>

The Info.plist for the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext shows:

<key>IOClass</key>

<string>AppleRTL8169Ethernet</string>

<key>IOPCIClassMatch</key>

<string>0x02000000&0xffff0000</string>

<key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key>

<string>0x816910ec 0x816710ec</string>

and the lspci -nn output gives

04:07.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet [10ec:8169] (rev 10)

So what does lspci -nn give for your NIC......?

lspci just gives Cannot find any working access method when I run it. I have another 8169 card installed in my file server and I know it works, so I think I will give that a try to see what happens. At least that should tell me if the problem is the 8169SC NIC I bought or just the POS Zotac system!

Have you tried AnV's version of DPCIManager to get the NIC info?

No, but I think I solved the problem. Apparently the NIC I just bought is bad. I substituted the one from my server, which has the same 8169SC chipset and with the Realtek R1000 kext loaded, I got a totally different message this time. Instead of cable unplugged, I was now getting a self assigned IP address, so I went ahead and removed the R1000 kext and tried it. Nothing at all without the R1000 kext, so I put the RTL8169 kext directly into /S/L/E and this time when I rebooted I had the proper IP address and the internet now works as it should. And this is with the MAC Lan set to disabled, so I don't think the other card was working right at all.

At least that problem is solved and I can move forward now. I just want to thank you for all your help on this. Without people like you, Hackintosh land would be a lonely, lonely place. Thanks a bunch!

Glad to help........

So perhaps, the RTL8169 kext does work for you from within IONetworkingFamily Plugins......try it for neatness...... :)

Actually I did, when I removed the R1000 kext I rebooted with just IONetworkingFamily and it didn't work. That is when I used your suggestion to install it directly into /S/L/E. It might have worked if I would have ran the driver package which came with that card, but I never tried it. From what I gather, the driver package just inserts the proper card id into the IONetworkingFamily plist, is that about it?

If you look at the driver package using Pacifist you could see if it contains a full kext that it installs, or just a Info.plist only kext i.e. a legacy kext etc......

If the driver package does not work, then no big deal in having the RTL8169 kext directly in /S/L/E/, so long as it works! You could also see if the RTL8169 kext works when in /E/E/........

I will check back tomorrow to see the outcome of your testing of the various options........ :)

I haven't gotten back over to the Zotac system yet, but I was just curious about something. I was just looking at the IONetworkingFamily.kext here on my MSI P55-GD80 system and I noticed that the RTL8169 kext is not present in the Plugins folder. Does the card have to be installed in the system before that kext shows up or is something amiss?

I will do the experimenting on the Zotac here in a bit. I also want to try the card I just bought in my server just to see how it deals with it. That system, an Intel d915gag board running a P4 CPU, has Tiger installed on it, so I want to see if the outcome is any different on it. Hate to waste a card if it will work somewhere else. :P

If OS X was installed using a Retail Mac OS X Install DVD, then perhaps the installer, on not finding a RTL8169 NIC, does not install the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext into Plugins, or if a OS X distro install DVD was used, perhaps AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext was simply missing from the Plugins folder......

All of my installs are done with a retail DVD or flash drive with a copy of the retail DVD. I haven't messed with any install distros since way back when I did my first one (GA-945GCMX-S2) using Kalyway a few of years back. BTW, I still have that system and it has been updated to a retail install currently at 10.6.7.

In that case I can understand why reinstalling the system with the card inserted would be necessary to allow for instant recognition of the card. Otherwise, the package installer would be necessary to install the correct kext, etc.

EDIT: For anyone who is interested in seeing this system run, I posted a video on YouTube here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll9oZjh7cXY

I built this system primarily for someone who is not adept at building a computer, etc. Some of the members of HQ-A said they would like to have a Hackintosh but were unable to build one for themselves, for whatever the reason. I plan to let this one go to someone in the group for just the cost of components.

I was forced to re-install one more time due to an error on my part and this time, with the good 8169 NIC in place, Snow Leopard recognized it for what it was and installed the correct driver. I'm typing this using it and there was no need to insert any kext into /S/L/E to get it working. Things go much better when a good card is used. :)

Yes it is a good idea to start with working hardware..........glad you got everything sorted neatly....... :)

I have just run the 10.6.7 Combo Update and updated a cloned OS X 10.6.3 system to 10.6.7..........I only had to roll back to 10.6.2 AppleHDA to restore audio..........no USB issues and no Ethernet issues........everything appears OK including operation of FakeSMC + K-Stat-i for GPU temp, core temps, CPU speed, fan speed, etc......:)

Do these lockups occur if the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI card is removed and its driver kext renamed to SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS_Kext_Name.kext.orig to stop it loading......?

With the NIC fitted, does the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext load? What about nvenet.kext?

thanks a lot, i'll install the update tomorrow. Can you explain the K-Stat-i ?? I have a very high CPU temp. (sometimes 90 degrees or higher). Does it fix this temp?

No K-Stat-i is just a monitoring app for SMC data collected via slice's version of FakeSMC with plugins........see here.......

For temperature control you probably need RC5 and speedstepping (provided you have not overclocked CPU and/or RAM voltages).....see here......iLeopod is in the best position to help you with speedstepping etc. because I run a manually overclocked CPU and RAM with altered CPU, NB, SB and RAM voltages etc. with EIST and C1E disabled......and use Chameleon RC3 + PC_EFI v10.3 because it works best with my MBR/GPT multi-HDD multi-OS setup.....

Hi there,

How had your HDD been partitioned/formatted prior to attempting to use Disk Utility on it.....?

Hey Verdant

I've got a Sata to usb enclosure that I put the HDD in to format on my Macbook and I partitioned it as HFS+

You should partition it using the GPT scheme before formatting it as HFS+ and ensure that your BIOS is set up to allow booting from USB storage devices........

Sorry I meant I formatted it as Mac OS Extended Journaled using GPT (is that right?) I can boot from USB because I can get the into the installation but when I run the Disk Utility to format the internal Sata HDD it doesn't show.

Is Windows 7 on the same HDD as the OS X target volume? If so, it will have been partitioned as MBR and not GPT.......see section E of post #1 in this thread......

Also, it is likely that your 630i chipset is AHCI compliant, meaning that AppleNForceATA.kext will not work for you.....so see Kishna21's guide here........

I've got two HDD drives one with windows on which I have tried using the modified OSInstall.mpkg - no joy I can boot into installation but target HDD is not shown.

The 2nd HDD I have has been plugged in to my Macbook (via sata to usb enclosure) running SL and formatted via GPT and Mac OS Extended Journaled, again same outcome as above.

I've read Kishna21's guide after reading your guide about being ACHI compliant and was going to try it but can't seem to find the OS X Setup Files.zip that he talks about in the guide? Any ideas? Unless i'm being blind and stupid? http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/style_emo...fault/wacko.gif

Hi all

anyone tried booting with xpc or ##### yet? Because it seem they are the future of hackintosh, until Chameleon can handle DoubleFault KP.

I had some success with Chameleon and lion DP1 (not withDP2/3) but only in save mode. ( so lion should no problem for us) -- besides bootloader.
