First off, Verdant, I followed your guide about a year and a half ago and have successfully been running 10.6 on my P5N-e SLI machine ever since. So seriously, thanks a bunch for that. You're awesome. Perhaps a lot of my issues reside in the fact that, since this thing has been running stable for so long, I'm kinda helpless when it starts throwing a hissy fit.

I use my computer to do some color correction work and need a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card so I can use a calibrated broadcast monitor. An Intensity Pro card is a PCI-e x1 card, but since none of the x1 card slots work in OS X (unless there's some tutorial I missed out there to enable them), I have to use it in one of the x16 slots. With the P5N-E, however, in order to enable that card along with my 8800GT GPU, I have to flip an "SLI selector" card on the motherboard that enables two video cards. If it's in single card mode, the Blackmagic card isn't detected.

Flipping that little card on my motherboard to enable both x16 slots does enable my Blackmagic card to work (my understanding is it also then downgrades bandwidth on both to effectively make them both x8). The problem is by doing this OS X will eventually at some point freeze. It's like a game of hot potato; it could be five minutes, it could be two hours, but eventually it will freeze. This doesn't exactly lend itself to productive work. Flipping my motherboard back to single x16 slot mode makes everything run fine and dandy as before.

My Intensity Pro has the most up-to-date firmware and drivers, so I'm not really sure where to go from here, especially considering that Intensity Pro cards are trouble free installations for other Hackintosh users. But I have a feeling it has less to do with that card and more with the fact that I have to enable SLI mode on my motherboard to get both slots operating. Any thoughts?

Thanks much in advance! My sanity and my livelihood are much obliged!

I am running a Leaf Computer eSATA PCI-e card in my x1 slot (although it can also run in the x8 slot) on my Asus P5N-32E SLI Plus MOBO without any major problems.........except when I try large file transfers over a continuous period, e.g. in HDD cloning etc. to a eSATA drive via the JMB363 chipset I often get a KP unless I boot with cpus=1 maxmem=2048.......

Have you used IO Registry Explorer to check your PCI-e slot configurations as seen by OS X.....?

Hi Verdant,

I'm currently running 10.6.6. There is an update for 10.6.7. Can I safely upgrade to this version? What do I have to roll-back? Only the sound kext?

I have not had the time to update to 10.6.7 - I will do so this weekend.

I am initially prepared to roll back back to 10.6.2 AppleHDA.kext and the 10.6.4 IOUSBFamily and IOUSBMassStorageClass kexts........

and remove nvenet.kext, or rename it to nvenet.kext.bad......this is because nvenet AFAIK is for Ethernet on MCP73 and MCP79 chipset systems but loads even when another Ethernet/LAN kext has already been loaded for the hardware. In 10.5.7 and later (including 10.6.x), look in /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns.......this is a new location for nvenet.kext; prior to 10.5.7, this kext was not in IONetworkingFamily.kext.......

Funny you mentioned this, when I looked at the System Profiler for ethernet, it lists that location and nvenet.kext specifically. Never saw that before, may try to remove it and see what happens. I have a Gig-E PCI card coming, but I would just as soon save it for another project if this is an easy fix. I thought I read somewhere this boards uses a Realtek chipset for the ethernet, but I can't find where I read that now.

Edit: FYI, I tried to eliminate that kext (nvenet) from the plugins folder and that resulted in no ethernet on boot. Tried the version from 10.6.0 with the same results as the 10.6.7 version. I suppose this means my system does use either the MCP73 or MCP79 chipsets. It's not a big deal as I have the PCI cards coming, but I thought if it was an easy fix I would give that a shot. At least the new card will give it Gig-E instead of 10/100 from the onboard ethernet.

Have you tried using the nvenet.kext for networking (i.e. deleting nForceLAN.kext from /S/L/E) and repairing /S/L/E kext ownership, permissions and re-creating the Extensions .mkext file......?

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions
sudo chmod -R go=u-w /System/Library/Extensions
sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

and to make sure

sudo kextcache -v 1 -t -m /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/Extensions.mkext /System/Library/Extensions/

Okay, my install is purely vanilla, no added kext at all (except what ##### added to /E/E), so would the nForceLAN.kext be present in /S/L/E? The thing that doesn't make sense to me is that I have been listening to MP3's streaming over my local LAN from my file server since I posted earlier, about 4 hours so far. Why does this work so well and connecting to the internet causes problems?

Could not get the OS X port of lspci to work, I get this:

lspci: Cannot find any working access method.

So I used my Ubuntu 10.04 CD to boot up in Ubuntu, ran lspci -nn and this is what I got:

Then just for S&G I installed that kext using the installer, but it made no difference.

Edit: While in Ubuntu, I vigorously tested the ethernet via Firefox and it worked fine on every site I visited for at least 30 minutes, so nothing wrong with the port. Has to be OS X.

Found this on the HCL 10.6.0 list:

This is very close to my problem so I will probably give this a shot as well.

EDIT: Nope, this didn't work either. I give up, time to just wait for the new PCI card.

From the lspci output:

00:0f.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: nVidia Corporation MCP73 Ethernet [10de:07dc] (rev a2)

your MCP73 Ethernet device ID 0x07dc10de is supported by nForceLAN.kext.......so do a manual install of v0.64.5 of the nForceLAN.kext, by using Pacifist to extract the nForceLAN.kext for Snow Leopard from the v0.64.5 .mpkg file and then install it in /S/L/E using Kext Helper b7.......

Did as you requested, installed on my backup partition, then rebooted. Once back up I went to Apple's site and started downloading the 10.6.7 combo update. It was late, so I left it go over night. This morning when I checked, the entire file had been downloaded, so I tried a couple of websites to see if it was still working. It went to the first one, but the second try caused ethernet to drop it's connection. A very strange problem indeed.

I have decided to do a complete re-install, this time installing from scratch. The first time I did this I booted from my 10.6.0 equipped flash drive and then used SuperDuper to restore an image of 10.6.0 to the main partition. So a system has never actually been installed on this system using the Snow Leopard install DVD. I will probably have to set it up on a flash drive as I cannot use the IDE DVD drive to boot it from.

Another reason I want to do this is that I've made so many changes to /S/L/E, adding and removing kext, that I have no way of knowing what I've done or haven't done yet, so it needs to be set back to vanilla. I've been wanting to do this for some time, just to see what difference, if any, it makes in the way the system performs. I will post back here if it make any difference.

EDIT: Fresh install went without a hitch. Copied the /Extra folder over from my main partition and used ##### to install VoodooHDA, installed NVenabler using Kext Utility and rebooted. Now have correct video and as a test I started up iTunes and played MP3's from my network server. Played for over an hour, no problem. Next I tried to play a video from my network server. I couldn't even get to the Video folder on the server before the ethernet stopped working. Keep in mind this is pure vanilla, besides the changes I mentioned, so the nForceLAN.kext has not been installed.

I also have a USB/e-net adapter which I plugged in and rebooted. On the restart I went into network pref pane and it recognized and setup the adapter. Surfed the web and played several videos on YouTube so e-net that way works fine. I hope I have the same good luck with the PCI card (which should be here tomorrow), when it arrives.

If your PCI NIC has the Realtek RTL8169 or RTL8169S chipset, then it should work OK.

Yep, that's the only kind I buy for Hacks! :)

I went ahead and updated the fresh install to 10.6.7, but now the USB/ethernet is not working. This is one weird machine!

Not a help request, just more of a 'This worked for me' sorta post. I just repurposed my EVGA 680i based hack into a storage server; took about a hour of tinkering to get the basics up and running.

hardware : EVGA 680i SLI; 3ghz Core2 Wolfdale; geforce 210; Marvell-based sata card pci-id(11AB, 7042) (with FIS support for the 2x 5 drive port replicators I tossed on the thing)

1). I made a clone of a previously installed vanilla 10.6.6 on a different mac/hack

2). Installed Chameleon 2.0 RC4 r684

3). Used my old, bare bones DSDT w/ the RTC patches etc already there.

3). Setup com.apple.boot.plist; PciRoot = 1 and no graphics enabler (couldn't get it to fire up, despite it working w/ this card/dsdt/mainboard in the past.

4). Installed nvenabler + fakesmc into /S/E/ ; disabled the nvenet.kext from IONetworkingFamily.kext in S/E/ ; AppleNForceATA.Anv.kext in /E/E/ ; Installed nForceLAN_0.64.5 ; rebuilt the extensions cache etc.

The performance of the nforce ethernet is as crappy as lackluster as I recall from before upgrading to a add-on NIC. (35-40 mb/sec is as good as it seems to get for me). . . other than that; everything works as advertised.

Not unexpected as when updating to 10.6.5 and 10.6.6, loss of audio and USB functionality were the main issues.........both are fixable by rolling back to pre-10.6.5 AppleHDA and IOUSBFamily and IOUSBMassStorageClass kexts in my case........i.e. back to 10.6.2 AppleHDA.kext and the 10.6.4 IOUSBFamily and IOUSBMassStorageClass kexts........so you may need to roll back IONetworkingFamily.kext.....

I have an ALC662 on this board and I tried all sorts of things to get it to work with AppleHDA, ended up using VoodooHDA instead. At least I don't lose it between OS updates.

NIC's arrived in the mail today (Eggsaver), so I will one of those installed soon. Then I can kiss my ethernet problems goodbye! I hope... :)

Did you ever try a modified DSDT.aml file with AppleHDA........?

Yep, tried several different approaches using techniques I found in various threads for the ALC662. None worked.

Not only that, but I've just finished attempting to get ethernet up using one of the NIC's I just bought. These are well established Realtek 8169 chipped cards and its not working. I go into the network pref pane and it says new interface detected, etc. But when I click OK, it says the cable is unplugged, which it's not. This cable has been tested with another Hack and it works just fine there.

I even tried installing the driver for 10.5 which came with the card, but again, it says new interface detected and I get cable unplugged when I click OK. This computer must be jinxed or something.

What is your output from kextstat in Terminal........is AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext loaded?

Doesn't seem to have stopped the freezes. I'll try again today as it froze a little after the command and it might not have taken effect.

I finally had time to mess around with OS X again and it seems the problem persists. I simply get random lock-ups. Even with spotlight disabled. I'm not sure what is the problem since it will happen randomly and essentially the system locks up but I get the spinning mouse and I can still move my mouse but it seems as if the system is just waiting forever on something. The dock, menus, etc. don't work at all. It starts with one application and then just kind of..spreads?

I have just run the 10.6.7 Combo Update and updated a cloned OS X 10.6.3 system to 10.6.7..........I only had to roll back to 10.6.2 AppleHDA to restore audio..........no USB issues and no Ethernet issues........everything appears OK including operation of FakeSMC + K-Stat-i for GPU temp, core temps, CPU speed, fan speed, etc......

Do these lockups occur if the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI card is removed and its driver kext renamed to SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS_Kext_Name.kext.orig to stop it loading......?

With the NIC fitted, does the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext load? What about nvenet.kext?

There is a setting in the BIOS for MAC Lan. This was set to disabled as the fail-safe default and I had to set it to AUTO to get any onboard LAN to work. I tried to reinstall SL with the card inserted, but I left MAC Lan disabled and neither the onboard or the NIC were detected. I plan to try once again with it set to AUTO and see what happens. When I checked with kextstat, I could find no instance of the proper kext being loaded, so this is why I'm trying another install of the OS.

I went ahead and ran the included driver package and rebooted. Still no sign of the NIC. Ran kextstat and here is the output from that:

This is a fresh install of 10.6.0, the only thing used to boot was the ##### CD, so that is why voodooHDA shows up, as well as other stuff used to boot up the OS.

Doug-Burtons-Mac-Pro:~ doug$

This is a fresh install of 10.6.0, the only thing used to boot was the ##### CD, so that is why voodooHDA shows up, as well as other stuff used to boot up the OS.

Try the following:

1) Disable all Ethernet related BIOS settings

On-Chip MAC Lan (Auto, Disabled) [Disabled]

Onboard LAN Boot ROM (Auto, Disabled) [Disabled]

2) Rename nvenet.kext to nvenet.kext.bad (as it is being loaded instead of the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext)

3) Reboot and see if AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext is loaded and you can connect via your NIC to the Internet

If not, then first try with AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext copied from IONetworkingFamily.kext Plugins folder and installed directly into /S/L/E using Kext Helper b7......see if it loads on bootup......

If this still does not work, then install the SL version of the Psystar R1000.kext into /S/L/E/ using Kext Helper b7.........
