So Ive been looking through this forum feed and have tried to get everything up and running but always get stuck at one part when either doing the leopard install or snow leopard install and that is video card. i dont know if im doing anything wrong or if somethings broken, but heres my specs and what ive done:

xfx nforce 750i sli mobo

xfx 8600gt 512mb

2gb ddr2 ram

200gb hdd

e5200 2.5ghz dual core cpu

i can always get it installed like the base install but then i install chameleon2 rc3 with pc efi boot file then throw the snow support files in the extra folder and the 32bit com.apple what ever file in there too. then run either efi studio or osx86 tools to import an efi sting for my card it always comes back on reboot with a black screen....whats wrong?

Well, well, well folks, what do we have here? Oh yeah, that's right, it's me typing from 10.6! LOL Ok, so following verdant's guide and with a little luck, I was able to get a fully bootable system running with my graphics in place, my sound working properly and everything else EXCEPT SLEEP! :( But, I'm glad, has anyone mad any progress with sleep? I'm also not really willing to use Apple's software update just yet because for some reason my motherboard doesn't like Vanilla kernels except for 10.0.0, so, do you think that if I was to update and just go into my clone and MOVE the old mach_kernel from the clone to the updated 10.6.2, would it work??? Thanks!

PS: VERDANT YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!

Majestus - what can I say to that but thank you.......

I am happy my Snow Leopard install guide is helping so many people to enjoy Snow Leopard (likewise my Leopard install guides......) :yoji: and maybe one day some will decide to buy a "real" Intel Mac and/or other Apple products if affordable, thereby enabling Apple to continue to invest in the R&D of "son of Snow Leopard"......... :D

I continue to just look at the 8 core MacPro and drool over it while not being able to afford to buy it...... :( but still enjoy using my G3/G4/dual G5 PPC Macs with Leopard and/or Tiger for work and my Hackinstosh with Snow Leopard/Leopard for fun and some CPU intensive work....... :D

PS I note in your signature that you mention EFI Studio v1.1 and NVEnabler.......do either now work for you?

Given your GeForce 8600GT 512MB graphics card.........AFAIK there is no immediately obvious reason why either EFI Studio v1.1 OR NVEnabler should not work......you could initially try swapping the display connector cable to the other port on your graphics card........since the NVCAP values in Info.plist or the EFI graphics string may not be correctly set.......

ok i think i have before tried swapping the dvi with the vga but didnt make the difference. i thought this card was really compatible thats why i got it over a newer 9xxx series card but all iv e had is problems with osx86. um ive done the efi strings with efi studio but maybe i did them wrong? choose it from the list and then export to the com.apple.plist thing then restart?....

ive done the nvinject kext and got it identified just yesterday but had no luck with acceleration and there were screen artifacts all over. u say either the efi strings or the nvenabler should work for me? also one more thing i have two pcie slots could it be i have it in the wrong one?

Check your MOBO spec but AFAIK know you have two x16 PCI-E slots for SLI.......

You could try the card in each x16 PCI-E with the same EFI string and then with NVEnabler.........full CI/QE in SL will give you a transparent top menu bar......in EFI Studio v1.1 there is the option for 8600GT 512MB.......

OR with Chameleon 2.0 RC3 or RC4, try in com.apple.Boot.plist (instead of using an EFI graphics string):

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>

@verdant: i was starting follow your guide for install SL, well for a newbie i think is very confused, i mean theres hundreds dissertion from main step, i agree its important but i think is easy to lose the path in this way.

By the way i arrived at this point:

- create flash usb drive, you write requisite:

(1) Access to a working Mac or Hack x86 OS X Leopard system

(2) A 8GB USB flash drive (memory stick)

(3) Your new Retail Mac OS X 10.6 Install DVD from which to make its .dmg image file, OR a pre-existing Retail Mac OS X 10.6 Install DVD dmg/.iso image fileTo make the OS X Install DVD image [.dmg] (or indeed any CD or DVD image) in Disk Utility by highlighting the disk in the sidebar -> File -> New -> Disk Image from diskXsY (Mac OS X Install DVD)....leaving Image Format as Compressed and Encryption as None....... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

(4) A DSDT.aml file generated for your MOBO/system (e.g. e.g. fassl's DSDT Patcher)

(5) The Chameleon 2.0 RC1 Installer, or RC2 Installer, or an RC3 Installer (see below)

I started follow it,

- downloaded chamaleon rc1, find on google, but you could at least post link where to download for not to fall in mistake,

- then there write nowhere what to do with the istaller, i mean...i gueessed partition target is usb flash card ok, but if you said, was better to avoid any mistake.

- same about pciefi, i found it on google, but a link was welcome, always for avoid mistake

- then i when on flash usb drive and replaced BOOT

...then guide go forward explain options to put in boot.apple.com.plist...but i think you forgot to explain what i should do with SL orginal dvd dmg image, because is write nowhere how to install dvd in flash usb card...

so im stuck and really confused.

Can u explain me clear what i have to do with the DL dmg image file and how to put it in flash drive "OSX_10.6_USB_Installer"?

Thanks.

ok this is what i did and as of today everything works minus sound but i just havent done the fix for it.

step 1: restore retail sl disk onto 8gb flash

step 2: install chameleon2 rc2 then drop in pc_efi 10.3 boot file

step 3: put all the snow leopard support files in the extras folder of the flash drive.

step 4: drop the boot.com.apple.plist file into the flash drive extras folder from the support folder for booting into 32bit mode.

step 5: boot to the flash drive and install unchecking all customize options and it should install 8.0gb of sl and fail at the end of install.

step 6: just reboot and boot to the flash drive again and choose your hdd you installed to.

step 7: now you go through all the video and register {censored} and after you just install the eno nforce lan kext and sound fix and there you go also your graphics card kext

hope that helps even a bit

restore retail sl into flash card.

I have retail dmg dvd image 10a432, so what i have to do to make step 1? thanks again.

PS. I can access leopard because i already have 10.5.8, so i can do everything that need from Mac.

sorry i was being vaige or unclear.

ok step 1, is fairly easy. go to disk utility and drag your disk image to the left panel under your hdd.

format the flash drive to mac os extended journal

then select the image and click restore on the top right.

then select the partition of the flash drive not the drive itself and drag it to the destination

then drag image to source and click restore.

*make sure u deselect if already selected the erase destination box because it make it fail.

wait 15-20min for restore and go on with my guide. reply back if you need more help for other steps

Assuming that you have enabled both USB v1.1 and v2.0 in BIOS, the absence of a high speed USB 2.0 bus in System Profiler is suggesting that it is still a BIOS related issue.....it appears that the EHCI (i.e. USB 2.0) controller is unable to take control/ownership of the USB 2.0 ports from the BIOS.....

In Leopard, the fix involved patching the source in IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleUSBEHCI.kext... by adding force lines into it...AFAIK there are currently two fixes for Leopard floating around:

[a] An earlier version of AppleUSBEHCI.kext was patched and renamed as PGENUSBEHCI.kext (meaning you should see PCGENUSBEHCI instead of AppleUSBEHCI, inside plugins folder of IOUSBFamily)

[b] A later version of AppleUSBEHCI was patched but name is unchanged!

As for Snow Leopard, it may well be fixed by DSDT patching.......alternatively, see post #4 and #5 here......

ok so i tried the 2 kext from the post you linked to and no dice still :)

the errors im getting with everything default again are

USBF: 2.424 AppleUSBEHCI[0xc687000]::UIMInitialize - could not get chip to halt within 100 ms
USBF:		2.424		AppleUSBEHCI[0xc687000]::UIMInitialize - Error occurred (0xe00002c9)
USBF: 2.526 AppleUSBEHCI[0xc687000]::UIMFinalize - could not get chip to halt within 100 ms
USBF: 2.526 AppleUSBEHCI: unable to initialize UIM

That would fit in with your theory it cant grab the 2.0 from the bios

im like smashing my head against a wall right now idk why i seem to be the only one

or am i just missing something so simple would the nforceATA im using be a part of the issue?

or any other suggestions for me i can post a copy of my dsdt if you like and possibly get an idea or 2

thank you for your help again

Edit:

oh and i also get this when i boot everytime

kernel	Refusing new kext com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily, v2.6: already have loaded v2.6.3.

and i have no clue where 2.6.3 is being loaded from all i have is 2.6 i S/L/E

and i have no clue where 2.6.3 is being loaded from all i have is 2.6 i S/L/E

What version of Chameleon are you using and what do you have in com.apple.Boot.plist.....

Also what kexts have you got in /Extra/Extensions......and do you have an Extensions.mkext file in /Extra.......have you added any kexts to /System/Library/Extensions......

BTW are you using slashack's 32bit AppleNForceATA v0.1 kext as recommended.......and booting in 32bit mode....?

Glad to see so many success stories up in here, mine included, but, has anyone been able to make any progress with Sleep?? I think that would ideally be what I need to get this system to be exactly what it should be. In the meantime, I've been taking some time off and actually playing...ready for this...? Doom 3 for Mac. LOL I love that game, it never gets old!

Update: I tried netkas' sleepenabler.kext on another backup drive I've got and NO DICE, KP from the get go.

Alter your Boot.plist as shown (assuming your graphics string is OK; I have included the -v flag so that on bootup you get verbose output to help you see what is happening.......you can always remove it later) and see what happens:

<dict>

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string></string>

<key>Kernel</key>

<string>mach_kernel</string>

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<string>-v arch=i386</string>

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>5</string>

<key>device-properties</key>

<string>YOUR EFI GRAPHICS STRING</string>

<key>Default Partition</key>

<key>Instant Menu</key>

Just wanted to say thanks for the fantastic guide. I have a BFG 680i board that I've been using as a Leopard server for quite some time now, thanks to some of your older guides. I just picked up a Dual PowerPC for free that I was also using as a server, and since I now had a backup for all of my services I though I would try and upgrade the Hackintosh to Snow Leopard. Thanks to this guide, my new Hackintosh server is running much better, seems to have better performance, more of its hardware is recognized, and it hasn't hiccuped yet. Thanks for your great info. Also, the new 10.6 server is pretty amazing, definitely worth the upgrade.

Glad you like the guide and that it helped you to install 10.6 server version..... :(

i've recently installed 10.6.2 on my old c2q 780i system. this is my second attempt at a hackintosh, and it was altogether very painless. i used all the kexts listed before, nforceata, nforcelan, and such. i had to use the modified nforceata to run 8gb of ram. for graphics i use a gtx280 with just an efi string added to boot.plist. every works and benchmarks great, it's been running hard for a while now with no kp's or anything.

the only problem i have is that i can't boot 64 bit due to the nforceata kext. does anyone know when a 64 bit version will be available and if one is where to get it? thanks.

edit: i tried the 64 bit applenforceata a couple pages back and it wont load x64, only in x86. also i am having the same USB issue as above. booting the system with a usb 1.0 device attached is causing the same error message. if i unplug any usb 1.0 devices (mouse) i get no error and full 480mbps. any way to fix that permanently without having to unplug?
