HOW-TO GUIDE: Snow Leopard Retail 10.6 on Asus P6T Deluxe V2

I'm using a P6T deluxe and an i7 920 and a GTX 280. I used my Macbook Pro to prepare all the kexts, I deleted the dsdt.aml and am not using one, and I used the EFI strings technique on my MBP and then wrote the proper stuff to the com.apple.Boot.plist on my external drive (where my 10.6 installation is) and tried to boot up. With and without NVinject, everything boots up and then my monitor's signal cuts out. What's going on? This happened with and without NVinject AND with and without the EFI string approach.

Thanks dgobe for the very quick response. Actually I set it up only using your files but after installing Snow, I only got a black screen and music, I could also see/move my mouse but not other graphics on the screen, ended up using gfxutil and it worked. I'll try to do as you suggested later tonight.

Thanks

Everything seems to be working now (except for firewire), didn't really do anything :) which is weird, I booted up tonight and yes, the desktop showed up, tried multiple times and it's working just fine :)

Anyone knows how to fix that firewire issue?

Thanks

DOC -- try hooking the drive directly to SATA0 port, not external USB. (I had a more formal reply but it got mangled when I submitted it :)

Firewire works here with an external hard drive.

Are you sure you have your front panel connector hooked up properly -- have you tried the rear firewire port? Maybe the device is unsupported?

I tried mounting the same drive on an MBP and it was working fine  I currently have the drive installed internally already so it's not a problem for now. I'll try to mount it as FireWire Drive tonight (by the way, I also tried mounting the drive on the rear port)

About that display issue, I did some tweaks last night, I removed that device-properties and the long hex value I got from executing gfxutil and set GraphicsEnabler=Yes (it was set to 'Y' instead of 'Yes') and rebooted, and everything worked out just fine, I guess it had to be "Yes" instead of "Y"

Thanks for all the help man...

I'm not sure why that would make a difference...the connection is fine, and it would be kind of a pain to open my case up (messy room).

This seems like a graphics issue. A bunch of people in this thread had it, but they all said it was fixed when they ran gfxutil and saved the EFI string - is it a bad thing that I used gfxutil on my external MBP and then wrote the EFI string to com.apple.Boot.plist on my external/OSX86 drive?

Well i have made another effort to get Snow working...

so far...

installed snow from my leopard install

installed chameleon rc2

replaced boot file with efi 10.3

added dsdt from post 123

added necessary kexts, smbios etc from post 123

used kext utility to make new Extensions.mkext file

then edited the ethernet card

also replaced the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist with one from post 123

exchanged hdd

booted for first time with -v -f and have working sound

seemed to boot fine but no network, can see the ethernet in about this mac, also noticed it doesn't recognize my OC of cpu and still unknown.

rechecked the editing of network in terminal and seems fine

re booted with -v -f and same problem

rebooted with -f and same problem

rebooted with no tags and wont boot at all

now sorted the internet but definitely isnt booting without -f... seems to stall at the very last step and never boot... noticed this when booting with -v compared to -v -f... at

'ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::PushCPU_CSTData - _CST evaluation failed

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::PushCPU_CSTData - _CST evaluation failed

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::RegisterLPCDriver - Warning - LPC device initiation failed: C-state power management not initialised

AppleTyMCEDriver::start coreVIDPID = 0xffffffff Number of packages = 1 Number of cpus = 8 memory monitor trough MCA'

so can anyone help me here??? then i can hopefully put this working on my main hdd and replace leopard.

edit. solved lack of network...

Spec:

mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe V2

Process: i7 920

Graphics card: PNY 9800 gtx+

Memory: CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) Model TR3X6G1600C7 (7-7-7-20)

HDD (SATA): WD 1 TB

Disk Drive (SATA): Plextor PX-B320SA Blu Ray Combo

I need help I am going to put down the steps I took, Correct me if I am wrong:

1. Connected USB 1 TB SATA drive with enclosure to my Hackintosh HP Laptop (iatkos 10.5.7)

2. Opened Disk Utility. Selected the USB drive in the sidebar and erased/reformated it with Two partition 1. 150 gb for (named as "Snow") and rest as free space. I used Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). I also Ensured that the Partition Map Scheme is GUID.

3. Than I went drive and right clicked and chose "Get Info" on the drive and in the "Sharing & Permissions" section I unchecked "Ignore Ownership."

4. Than I took another 250gb external drive and reformatted using same method as above except this time I had only one Partition.

5. Than used disk utility to restore 250gb with Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg

6. once it was done i ran the OSInstall.mpkg from the 250gb drive and Installed SL on 1 TB hard Drive (on Snow Partition). While installing I unselected printer driver, additional fonts, additional languages. and finished installation

7. Than I ran the Chameleon installer (Chameleon-2-1.0-r431.pkg) and be sured to change the install location to the drive I just put 10.6 on.

8. Run this in terminal with following command:

sudo -s

rm /Volumes/Snow/boot

9. I download a Extra02102009.zip from post #123 and extracted on desktop

10. From the download pack, move "bootpcefi10.3" and "dsdt.aml" to the root directory of my Snow drive.

???? Is there a hidden folder called "boot" in the root directory of my snow drive????

???? If there is how how can i tell os x to show hidden file and folders?????

11. Than I copied rest of the Extra folder to /Snow/Extra (excluding two file mentioned in step 10)

12. Than I dragged Snow/Extra/Extensions folder onto "Kext Utility" Program to repair the kext permissions

13. Than I plagued my 1 TB back into Desktop and let it boot up

It shows the Chameleon boot loader with Mac Guy and when i type -v -f and push enter it shows similar error as pic posted below which i got it from post #110 (if you need the actual error massage from my computer i can take a photo and post it here :

_DSC0869.jpg

So can some please help me to get rid of this error massage????

Mr. dgobe can you please give me more details how you did your install cause i think you and i have almost same setup except video card and optical drive????

Thank you guys in advance

Check your ACPI settings in the BIOS. ACPI 2.0 and ACPI APIC should be enabled.

You shouldn't replace /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. That can stay stock...just make sure the modded com.apple.Boot.plist is in /Extra

That probably doesn't hurt anything but the goal is to stay as vanilla as possible with all changes in /Extra

Move dsdt.aml to /Volumes/Snow/Extra (it will work in root too but I like all changes in Extra)

mv /Volumes/Snow/dsdt.aml /Volumes/Snow/Extra

I just named the boot loader "bootpcefi10.3" so people would know what version it was. It should be copied to the root of your SL partition and be named "boot", it's just a file, no hidden directory or whatever.

cp soucedir/bootpcefi10.3 /Volumes/Snow/boot

or if you already have bootpcefi10.3 in the root you can rename it:

cd /Volumes/Snow

mv bootpcefi10.3 boot

When you type ls in /Volumes/Snow you should see the file named boot.

both are enabled in the bios...

still no movement trying to get it to boot without -f... so i re-edited the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist back to standard and then rebooted and ran using -v -f and got the usual loading lines then when it normally boots i get a nice blank black screen!!! when boot with nothing still hangs as before... booted with -v -f -x and it booted with a nice blank black screen...

graphics card is an gtx285 ocx

so kind of gone backwards... any ideas???

Did you copy the modified /Library/.../com.apple.Boot.plist to /Extra before you set it back to standard? If not, copy the com.apple.Boot.plist from the download to /Extra if it's not already there.

You can hit Tab at boot to get to the boot loader prompt and use -s to boot into single user.

Do a:

mount -u -o rw /

That will mount the root partition read/write and you can make your changes. Then type in:

reboot

Okay, so I got all my issues fixed - I can boot, etc. But I get panics about a minute or two after boot, during use. Always a random kext in the backtrace, and a random thread as the current running thread. I created my own dsdt.aml, repaired /E/E using kextutility, and set the chmod/chown stuff for /E/E and /S/L/E in single-user mode. But the random crash happens so quickly that it'll happen before I can use diskutil to repair permissions. What's going on?

Um, because you said you were booting to a blank screen? And by your previous post you made it sound like you didn't have the boot.plist in Extra.

ye thanks...

well decided to start from scratch again today adn got it to work with -v -f

then with no flags

then updated to 10.6.1

then worked fine again with no flags...

so i guess you learn with each attempt and now i have it working so tonight i am going to try replace my leopard install on my main hdd...

thanks everyone for the guide etc and the extra folder contents from you dgobe... very much appreciated... now just have to win my rugby game this avo then come home to install it all again(10th time in 2 days!!!)...

Hi all,

as I was receiving couple of the PM's with questions I thought to share the way I installed Snow Leo on my Asus P6T deluxe. My system specs:

- ASUS P6T Deluxe

- core i7 920 @2.66Ghz

- 12 GB Kingston value ram 1066MHz (6*2GB)

- 3 SATA hard drives Samsung HD642JJ (3*640GB)

- 1 SATA DVD burner Pioneer 216D

- 1 IDE DVD-RAM burner Panasonic SW-9576 (Mat{censored}a, cartridge slot) ==> not working in 64-bit mode

- Asus 138g wireless card (Broadcom 4318)

- Powercolor ATI Radeon 4850

So far only IDE DVD drive is not working. The external Firewire hard drive is working fine, however I can not boot from it (I can not choose it in BIOS as boot device, as well Chameleon does not see it).

The attached guide is based on the files from the post #123. No other changes to SnowLeo were done apart of the changes in the guide.

Thank you guys, especially dgobe and wziard you guys were big help to me and now I have excellent working snow leopard.

I just want to know following things for future reference:

1. Can I update the os x 10.6 to 10.6.1 and if i can are there any specific steps i need to take?

2. Is it possible to dual boot SL and Windows 7 from same drive but different partition? the main question in this question can windows 7 be installed on partition that has Guid Partition Table (GPT)?

Thank you guys in advance

roy4ever - Good to hear you got it working, it looks like you had some corrupted files before in your last post

1. Just use software update for 10.6.1, no problems.

2. Yes, despite many posts to the contrary, you can run Windows Vista/7 and SL from the same drive on a GPT configured disk. I just did it on my 1000HE and I was thinking about putting together the steps involved when I have time. There might already be some posts in the Multibooting and Virtualization sub-forum that can help you.

hi dgobe,

if you don't mind I just wanted to know when r u planning to write step by step for dual boot win 7 and SL from same drive (GPT). I wanted to know this so that i can decide to buy another hard driver or not because i am dual booting right now with one internal (with window 7) and one external drive (with SL and chameleon boot loader) . If it is less than a month than i will wait or if its more than that then i am just going to buy it now and late when you come out with step by step i will use it as Raid 1

Ey guys,

Just would like to let you know that PC EFI 10.4 (just released) worked great for me. It made my Sapphire 4870 2GB worked right away (got it today from newegg to replace my faulty Gigabyte GTX 260), no need for EVOEnabler, all you need is GraphicsEnabler set to Yes and your card will work right away.

yep all the benefits seem to be for radeon cards... so i dont see the point in changing mine from 10.3...

New version of chameleon based booter includes these new abilities:

GraphicsEnabler now supports Radeon hd 2/3 series too, but only for Leopard

GraphicsEnabler now set up bin_image property for all radeon hd cards found in system, should fix 100% fan speed issue.

You can tell GraphicsEnabler(GE) to use custom version of bios(for overcloking/changing fan speed/ etc). Use option -useatirom, and GE will look for bios files in /Extra folder (from root and boot partitions, Extra from root partition has more priority). Place bios files to Extra folder and rename them to this format – ati_XXXX_YYYY.rom, where XXXX – devid, and YYYY – vendor-id, for example rom file for 4850 should be named – ati_9442_1002.rom.

3rd party sm_cpu_type patch added (well, doesnt work for me anyway) and 3d party patch to fix hibernation.

Proper enumerating of all pci ethernet/video devices

Fixed few typos

Support for radeon hd 4730 (rv770 based card) added to GE, the card wasn’t tested tho

Support for multiple Radeon hd 48×0 cards in SnowLeopard

Installation – make sure you have chameleon2 installed, then replace boot file in boot partition with this one – boot

Sources – Chameleon-2.0-RC3-r658-src_PCEFIV10.4-src.tar.bz2

Also, legacyAti4800Controller kext, to forget about adding dev-id to that kext after every update – kext, use in mkext in /Extra/

p.s. Updated Graphics Enabler now works with 10.6.2 and ati 48×0 gpus.

so your saying that if i have a nvidia card with snow leopard than I don't need to update is that correct?
