when you installed chameleon, did you use the EFI HFS options ?

then it will initialize your efi partition, only then you'll be able to mount it

Guys - want to report another success story - first my specs..

MB - Gigabyte UD3P

and ATI Radeon HD 4830 with dual DVI ports.

 

Used the tutorial published by doom in this thread and had everything (except video of course) working OOTB. Sound, Ethernet, Sleep etc etc all from the files found in the first post.

But the graphics card was a B***** to manage - especially since i was screwing up my MBR more times that i care to tell.. This was all the more problematic since I have Windows Vista and Leopard 10.5.7 on the same disk - different partitions..)

Finally installed Chameleon RC2 with the booter 10.1 released by netkas the day before. This made snow recognize the card as a 4830 but still didnt have QE / CI and full 1080 resolution...

Then installed netkas's 10.6.1 patch for ATI radeons - this then created an interesting problem..

Snow would boot up and immediately swittch to full resolution - would see the desktop and then like a light switch, the display woudl blank out - still would see the blue screen but no desktop, then 5 secs later back to desktop and then blank out again.. This drove me nuts till 1 AM yesterday...

So close - yet so far..

Then started experimenting by adding the ATI framebuffer ATINDRV kext .. and snow woudnt even boot up:((

Then removed ATINDRV and added EVOEnAbler for 4830 and success - full resolution and QE - CI.

Everything works...even migrated my applications from 10.5.7 and no issues at all. Wake up from Sleep no issues...basically no KP's..so far atleast - keeping fingers crossed..

I owe this to all the guys in this thread that have been so helpful - doom, noob and many more than i may have failed to mention..

Now i just need to figure out how to show only specific drives on my desktop - dont want to see all since some of them contain docs that my wife uses - dont want to touch that )

Also any idea how i can control what drives the chameleon boot screen offers for selection. Right now it shows me my data partitions also - but i obviously cant boot into them.

And help will be much appreciated..

And hope this info about the 4830 helps someone...

during the install clicl on the configure button

you'll have 3 choice of install

standard - install at the root of the disk

EFI fat - don't use it in your case

EFI HFS - to install on the efi partition, that's what you need!

 

 

yes you can, but you'll still have some hidden stuff in your regular partition (i.e boot that you can delete, and other stuff in the folder structure), but that won't hurt it, because when the efi partition in initialized your computer will boot on the efi partition instead

 

mount the efi partition

and just copy and paste your extra folder to the efi partition,

replace the boot file with the "boot" file that you can find in chameleon rc3

unmount it, before restarting or you won't have access to it, there's a simple command to run in the terminal to get back to it IF that happens, (at the end of munky's guide you'll find it)

then delete your extra folder at the root of your Snow leopard partition

Eliade, you mentioned before that you use Chameleon RC2 with the RC3 boot file. What's the advantage to this? Is it simply because it doesn't require any "patching" to work with SL?

I should mention that I am actually running RC2 with the boot file of RC3, same as Eliade, although it is my understanding that the only change in RC3 was the boot file so basically I we are running RC3.

Hi all! (My first post)

 

I'm in the same situation as above. I've followed the guide as far as possible and have edited and compiled a new DSDT. Everything is rock solid except for sound which doesn't work at all. (It's easily as solid as my 10.5.7 which is sitting on a separate drive) I have also tried all the legacy sound kexts included in the SL pack, but I think I may be missing something with setting these up. (I'm dragging these one at a time into the Extras\Extensions directory and rebooting - is that all I need to do?)

I have the easiness of the rc2 installer with latest boot file from the chameleon team...

no advantage that I can see, rc3 boot file is just newer and was designed to be fully compatible with SL...

I still do the boot file replacement manually (it's just a drag and drop anyway)

 

I don't have the bug rockstarjoe talked about (because my efi string for video card is loaded from my boot.plist), so it is still a bit different than having a pure rc3 setup, unless he has the bug using rc2+rc3boot (which I don't and never did, I'm also using the rc3 boot on my USB install HD)

i'm now using the boot file from the new PC-EFI release (which is based on RC3), it seems to have fixed the issue with Firewire going into full-secure mode that i had with chameleon RC3.

Wow thanks so much that worked perfectly. For some odd reason it took my extra folder from the / root and somehow put it into the EFI partition, how I don't know? The Themes were left out even though I ticked all options. I just copied the themes into the /volumes/EFI/Extra/ mount. How do I access the themes during boot? I don't see any options during the Chameleon boot? I basically know these commands being an Avid Linux Fedora , Ubuntu, mandriva user.

 

Mount Command. The variables in my case were X=1 Y=1 and made a dir EFI under volumes. mkdir /volumes/EFI

 

mount -t hfs /dev/diskXsY /volumes/EFI/

 

Unmount

Got everything working perfectly on three machines using the ud3r, with the usb install method, and bonjour fix. But I can not get time machine to recognize my networked time capsule. Has anyone else had this issue. I have a few real macs on the network and they recognize it just fine. Bonjour all seems to works fine, can share files and screen share no problem. And time machine will work with a local drive.

Any idea's????

Regarding bonjour, I understand that kext is similar to the bonjour fix on a technical point of view, but maybe it does a little more (big problem with it is that it run on 32bit only, I've read that there may be a 64bit version running around but is very very buggy, but I never saw it myself )

chameleon installer will copy the extra from root to EFI for you... just a fact

 

you did good by moving the themes folder to efi/extra manually

from there themes are set in ....boot.plist file which should be in your Efi/Extra/

the line should be something like <key>theme</key> <string>theme_folder_name</sting>

if what I told you doesn't work then check chamelon 2 readme it will tell you

 

dsdt should be put in Efi/Extra

but may work in both location (m'not sure)

 

 

On OSX to mount it:

sudo -s

mkdir /Volumes/EFI

mount_hfs /dev/disk1s1 /Volumes/EFI

 

then to unmount:

umount -f /Volumes/EFI

rm -rf /Volumes/EFI

 

 

and if someday you forget tto unmount it and reboot you'll lose access to it

just run:(replace X with your disk number)

fsck_hfs /dev/disxXs1

then the usual command to mount it

Was able to install Snow 100% Working on the following hardware:

 

Motherboard: EP45-UD3LR

CPU: Q9400

Memory: 4GB 800Mhz

HD: 500GB

Video: ATI Radeon HD 4870

PCI Firewire

Sony USB Card Reader

External USB Drive 160 GB

 

Initialized this External Drive.

and followed the "USB (SECONDARY) DRIVE INSTALL METHOD" submitted by d00m42

 

I created the DSDT for the motherboard/Sound/Network, i also added the Kext for the Video card. ++

chameleon is a boot file basically

your computer will only look for the first one

either your first visible partition, or EFI partition if activated (which is before the visible partition, but is actually the very first partition)

but I guess you are not using efi for now

 

so for instance if you have leo on the first partition, and chameleon installed on it that's the one your computer will boot onto

if you have chameleon on a second partition with your snow leo install, this boot file (chemeleon) will never be read or booted onto by your computer....

 

so whatever you do on that second partition is pretty much useless...

 

what chameleon may do is use the extra folder on your first one because it is your boot partition, then load some stuff in you extra ffolder on your second partition when your are selecting that second partition during chameleon screen..

 

so to make your life simple dump your leopard install, snow leo works great so why keep leo...

I kept leo at the beginning only until my snow leo was stable, it now is... (used two HD)

just install snow leo on the first partition

 

but if you use chameleon rc3 (maybe rc2, I'm not sure)

you can create a 10.5 and 10.6 folder on your boot-able partition (the first one) inside the extra folder, then within each subfolder you put specific content for each leo or snow leo,

Just a routine update, to say that I've been running SL for almost a month without a single hiccup! I had to slightly downclock my overclock to make it more stable, but since then I haven't had a single KP/hang of any kind

 

I literally have zero free time between homework, extra curriculars, and college applications, but as soon as some of it dies down a bit I have quite a bit of work to do on the guide to 1, make it slightly more universal; 2, organize it more efficiently; and 3, add in new files and mini-guides for certain updated components used to install (e.g. Chameleon RC3 is definitely better than the EFI 10.1/Chameleon RC1 pkg I have in m current SL Pack, and I haven't formally changed the guide to say so).

 

The time will come... for now, back to writing college essays o____0;

and I want to make an iphone/ipod touch app to sell... just need one great idea ... (meaning that I have to put my hands into Objective-C, I know C, C++ and Java fairly well so it shouldn't be a problem...)

 

so I'm not going to be around for a while (not for at least a week maybe two)

Hello Hackintoshers!

 

Two days ago I bought a GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard because it is supposed to be one of the most supported motherboards for Hackintosh. (For reference, my setup is pretty simple; Quad core 2.5GHz CPU, 4GB DDR2 memory and 250GB Barracuda SATA disk).

 

I used the famous Lifehacker guide, and it boots (sometimes the CMOS resets though, and I am sometimes stuck at DMI Pooling). But eventually I do manage to actually get into the installer, I boot Darwin in verbose mode so I can see all the boot messages.

 

It finds my SATA drive (I've made sure my BIOS settings are 100% as according to this thread), and I partitioned it properly.

 

However, I get KP's again and again every time I try to write lots of data to the disk!

Kernel panic contains this message:

BSD

process name corresponding to current thread: fsck_hfs

I've experimented a bit and found that it panics every time I try to write to the disk.

 

So if I do this in the shell:

 

# cd /Volumes/HackintoshDrive

# dd if=/dev/zero of=foobar

(Which essentially just copies a lot of data to a file called foobar)

 

....Within a few seconds, I get a panic that says:

BSD

process name corresponding to current thread: dd

So in this case, dd is causing the panic. My conclusion is then that something SATA or AHCI related is causing my kernel to panic, but I have no idea why! I have tried several SATA disks.

 

I tried the SL Pack from this thread instead of the Lifehacker "Extra.zip", but that didn't help either.

 

Any ideas ? :censored2:

An interesting thing happened:

 

I was booted into my soundless SL system but had my 10.5.7 drive connected as well. I left Snow running for about 3 hours while I went out. When I came home my Mackintosh HD (10.5.7) drive had been savaged, rendered unbootable, and was renamed to Snow Leopard - the same as my SL drive!!! I now had 2 drives named Snow Leopard with Disk utility showing the name "Snow Leopard" on the trashed 10.5.7 drive in light grey.

 

After an hour of trying to salvage 10.5.7 I gave up and decided to install SL on it using Nullspot's USB Install method from the original page 1 guide (This thread). I then installed Snow Leopard on the trashed drive using the Extra's files I had created using Doom42's process and the recently JFLNYC 888 tuned DSDT.

 

Result - GOLD! Seems super solid and the sound works! - so a good outcome.

 

Moral of the story - Snow Leopards eat (can trash) normal Leopards for breakfast! :-)

Ah there are definitely too few hours in the day... I REALLY wanted to get into the iPhone SDK, but because I only know basic Java and C, Objective-C requires a little more effort to learn (partly because I haven't done any programming for over a year). I have a physics and math exam next week, and an econ quiz tomorrow (which I'm trying to study for right now).

 

English 102? I'm writing college application essays lol, because I'm senior in high school currently (applying to college soon). They're not that long in length (but have to be very creative and interesting to read). There's quite a few I have to write and I'm falling a little behind at the moment actually, so I have to make sure to get back on top of them.

After an hour of trying to salvage 10.5.7 I gave up and decided to install SL on it using Nullspot's USB Install method from the original page 1 guide (This thread). I then installed Snow Leopard on the trashed drive using the Extra's files I had created using Doom42's process and the recently JFLNYC 888 tuned DSDT.

 

Result - GOLD! Seems super solid and the sound works! - so a good outcome.

 

Moral of the story - Snow Leopards eat (can trash) normal Leopards for breakfast! :-)

 

Thank you to Doom42, Nullspot, JFLNYC and everyone who has posted useful info in this thread. It's an epic read for a newb like me, but I have learnt a heap and had fun with the challenge.

Glad to hear you had success! The fact your SL drive pwned your 10.5.7 drive is interesting... could it have to do with your computer somehow trying something funky with Time Machine and the 10.5.7 drive? I'm not sure... Anyways, I'll take this into consideration when I rewrite the guide soon.

I still dont have digital out working. Does any one know how to fix this? All my other audio outputs seem to work.
