snifferpro
Blackosx. Got my wired ethernet working so now I can use the net from SL to find fix for my ADI2000b on board sound. It's not a must though as I have a Logitech speakerphone connected so I can Skype and it works just fine. I also did an update to 10.6.1 successfully. Looking for detailed info on entries in SMBIIOS.plist so I can have my memory show up as DDR3 instead of 2. Do you know what entry in smbios to use to show the correct processor speed. It only shows as 2.6 when it should be 3.6? Thanks for assistance and good guide.
justmetoo
I'm back; about 18 hours after a failed SL install. I did a successful install using the CD Boot 1.02; almost anyway. Following the install, I went thru, as expected, an automatic reboot due to the CMOS reset. But then it really got interesting. Chameleon would not reboot SL or my 10.5.6 or 10.5.8, Vista 64 installs; nothing. The Boot CD 1.02 would not load. Fortunately I had a copy of DE's generic boot CD which would boot and I reloaded 10.5.6 which gave me a platform for experimenting with Chameleon. After installing r640 with a few generic kexts I finally got into my 10.5.8 install sans audio and with a generic video card. Anyway, I finally did what I should have done first, checking the BIOS settings. Apparently, the BIOS re-flashed(?) to default settings, non-ACHI etc. It's a miracle anything worked. After resetting the BIOS configuration, I restored my latest Chameleon Settings and everything came back perfect; did have to reset the network connection but that was no big deal. Unfortunately, the SL install went south as I needed to space to re-install 10.5.6 (my generic boot won't load anything higher. Good luck everyone! doradekell
About your recent guide for 10.5.8...The way to use video.plist and ethernet together in a "combined.plist" did work ONLY when I opened it in efi studio and DIRECTLY saved it to com.apple.boot.plist. not exactly what u recommended but it did work... Keep up your good work Blackosx!! /peder J pedjoh, If I am not mistaken by default when you use the "Save directly to com.apple.boot.plist" option it will actually write to your system file and NOT to your /Extra folder. By doing this you no longer have a vanilla install. You should verify this as the com.apple.boot.plist is located here /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. You should check to see if this is the place EFI Studio updated. Dora
doradekell
All, Is there another way to get the correct CPU name other than editing /System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/English.lproj/AppleSystemInfo.strings file directly? I would prefer not to touch anything under the System. Sorry if this has already been discussed. Thanks! Dora
msm5
First, let me express my gratitude to blackosx and so many others. I have been using a hackintosh mostly for play for the past 2 years as it was never stable enough for my liking. The last installation prior to SL using weaksauce12's guide was very good and lasted a while with decent stability. But nothing like the method in this thread which in my humble opinion is bulletproof. Having a "stock" partition for the main OS is wonderful simplicity. I've made a clean break from Windows except having a Parallels installation available for a few things. That being said, I wanted to relate a quirk in one SL installation, which was solved. I had 2 perfect installations using the bootCD method and following the guide word for word. One was on a GA-EP35-DS3R, E6400, 4GB RAM, 160GB HD, the other GA-EP45-UD3P, Q6600, 8GB RAM, 160 HD. The third was also a GA-EP45-UD3P with 8GB RAM and Q6600 but with a Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB hard drive. Chameleon RC2 would not install to the Cham partition, neither would RC1. I ended up manually installing RC3 to the Cham partition (according to the included help file) and the rest of the installation went fine. I'm currently typing from it! I've been using these systems in 32-bit mode only so far. I think the issue must be due to the hard drive size. I still have 2 outstanding issues: I've been unable to make IDE optical drives work in any system, even with the kext by Netkas. It would be great if they would since I have several perfectly good units on the shelf, but I'll probably just pick up a few SATA optical drives. The second issue is regarding network backups with Time Machine. I haven't seen it really addressed anywhere for SL and I was hoping to be able to backup directly to my Windows Home Server. Any takers? One last thing: I've noticed my CPU temps on the Q6600 have been at least 5 degrees Celsius lower in SL than 10.5.8. Thanks again blackosx! boogi
Hi everybody, I'm running currently 10.5.8 but I'm a little bit confused about 10.6. Can I just update 10.6 over my present system without a second partition? I have just one mac partition Does 10.6 work with IDE Harddrives? Thx! I would think a clean install is the way to go, but I tried doing a clean install today using only one system partition and I ran into some issues. Essentially, I used the BootCD and once I got into the Snow Leopard installer, I formatted my system drive (with Leopard on it -- I had a Time Machine backup just in case though). It installed fine and I was able to boot into it using the BootCD, but for some reason whenever I tried installing Chameleon RC2 the installation would fail. I then had to install Leopard onto a different partition, install Chameleon from within Leopard, and then I formatted my Leopard partition leaving me with only my Snow Leopard partition. I'm not sure why I wasn't able to install Chameleon from inside Snow Leopard, but I would be careful if you are trying to install Snow Leopard only using one partition. In the SMBIOS, for DDR3 RAM , your SMmemtype value will be 24. and the SMmaximalclock value should be something like 3666? (There is a way to properly calculate it). Master Chief
WOO HOO ! Got Sleep working on my machine and I do have a TSST DVD drive that others had issues with sleep. I used the tips here for the DSDT SATA fix and here for the USB/EHCI DSDT fix. I can now put the "kitty" to bed and wake her up with either the keyboard or the mouse. May I ask what TSST model number you have? And what about sleep after an idle period. That also works for you without a CD/DVD in the drive? I would prefer not to touch anything under the System. Sorry if this has already been discussed. Not as far as I know doradekell. I was happy with my processor being reported in 'About this Mac' as unknown. But since doing the hack that BJMoose suggested I haven't had any problems. But I agree, it's does involve touching the system which goes against this guides philosophy. First, let me express my gratitude to blackosx and so many others. Hi msm5 Well done for building 3 systems One you know what to do, it's straightforward to apply this to any machine. It's only the tweaks to get all the hardware working just right that takes the time. For your third machine when installing Chameleon, you did the best thing and manually installed it. Personally, I would forget about IDE drives and just use SATA (if that's feasible). And doing a network backup with Time Machine is possible and I believe I have read a post describing the process, but unfortunately I can't remember where so you are going to have to search. I would think a clean install is the way to go, but I tried doing a clean install today using only one system partition and I ran into some issues. The problem with Chameleon failing by running the installer from within SL has been discussed here before. But the best route when you're faced with a problem like this is to just install it manually. There is a Read Me in the Chameleon binary files showing how to do it. uketernity
Hi Blackosx, Well, ive managed to get everything working, it appears that some lines in the com.apple.Boot.plist were causing my audio not to work, no idea why. Removed most of them and its working fine now. Im trying to install parallels desktop, but it tells me that it can't install as its not on an intel processor (which it is, intel quad 9550). Ive changed the string in System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow/Contents/Resources/English.lproj to reas 2.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad but still get this error. Any ideas if there is something else thats causing this incorrect detection? Oli

Wonder what you could have had in your com.apple.Boot.plist that stop audio from working? Try changing your SMBIOS.plist to a Mac Pro to convince Parallels to install (Just a guess) after installing 10.6 with your guide i updated to 10.6.1 via Software Update, update was shown as 70+ mb (not 9mb as others had), but went flawlessly without any problems, everything is still working. thanks again for your perfect guide =) Great Well done Your 10.6.1 update must have included other stuff then I guess. Thanks CrazyD - the general install of this guide will work with your system but you are just going to have to apply any specific kexts etc that are needed for audio, networking and anything else for your mobo. blackosx
That com.apple.Boot.plist looks like the one from the BootCD I supply which is based on Superhai's original BootCD. EDIT: So it was pointing Chameleon to look for your DSDT.aml at device located a 0,0 which is why your DSDT probably didn't load. Just out of interest, if any of you would like to look more into Chameleon's features etc, then rocksteady has just put together a great FAQ to help find information. Keep an eye on it as it will only grow. You can find it at h t t p://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,754.0.html As for parallels, damn.. That's a shame. There must be a way to convince it. There must be a thread about that somewhere in these forums? But, unfortunately I can't test it on my system as my E7300 doesn't include Intel Virtualisation!... I didn't know I had to look for that when I bought it and have had to learn the hard way.

On the MS site, it says it's compatible w/ Snow Leopard, but it's the same software version I used on Leopard I believe. Also, whenever I open up the preference pane, it has to relaunch system preferences (which it didn't have to do in Leopard). What's weird is I don't think I noticed this when I was using Snow Leopard briefly a few weeks ago, so I'm not sure what the issue is.

No I have not chacked yet because I don't have external speakers yet. I'll get new and then check. But why I can't select anything? while in 10.5.7 I had that option. Also I just found out my machine does not comes up from sleep after moving network, graphics and audio to dsdt. blackosx
When I was doing my testing to get DSDT audio working for the GA-EP45-DS3L I had various problems and one was this problem you are describing. Also, if I didn't select HDEF then I wouldn't get any details in System Profiler, if I did select HDEF then I would get details in System Profiler but no sound coming out.. Different settings gave me some options but not others. In the end the only way to get it working is how I have documented it. Patch your DSDT.aml with ALC888 and add one of the LegacyHDA.kexts to /Extra. But your EP45-UD3R uses ALC889A so I don't know exactly what you need to use to get that working. You are going to have to ask in a thread which specialises in that. And again for your sleep and with regards to not having to apply the SATA fix etc, this varies for different motherboards. Remember that anything I post here is specifically for the GA-EP45-DS3L and if it works for another board then great but if not then you'll need to find a thread for your board. boogi
Ah well..at least we know the driver is up to date. I will try my mouse here on my hack at home but unfortunately it won't be for a week as I am going away early tomorrow morning. So if anyone has any questions I can help with then ask them before this evening or they'll have to wait until I return. Doing some initial testing, it seems that closing iTunes 9 seems to have removed the mouse jumpiness. Is there a known issue with iTunes 9 and Snow Leopard? That's the only new piece of software that I can think of that I didn't have installed when I was running SL a few weeks ago. Also, this didn't seem to happen with iTunes 9 in Leopard, so it's a little odd. To clarify, it's not quite the same issue as the older iTunes/Quicktime mouse lag. It's more mouse jumpiness. I'll move my mouse a little bit and the cursor will jump a lot farther. It also happens a lot less frequently than the old mouse lag bug. Whereas that bug would happen every few seconds, I can't really predict when the jumpiness will happen (I could circle the mouse around the screen for 10 seconds and it may or may not happen).
