Here's my extra's folder for my G51J which is fully functional except for shutdown and SD card reader. I have a full retail version of 10.6.4 running the vanilla 10.4 kernel.

G51J specs are very similar to the VX, try my DSDT at your own risk, it gives full GTX 260m support with acceleration and all the goodies.

After upgrading to 10.6.4 I did get the Kernel Panic. Looking at the Verbose boot up, I was able to narrow it down to the SleepEnabler.kext. Apparently the version I had was old and not able to run on 10.6.4. I removed the hard drive and put it on my windows computer and used MacDrive to remove that extension. Once I did that, everything worked again.

Following items not yet working:

1. Mic plays through speakers.

2. Wireless (Intel 5100)

Working:

1. NVidia GTX260M (Hardware Acceleration Enabled)

2. Sound (Somewhat)

3. Dual Display

4. Keyboard and Trackpad (had to reinstall Empire EFI after 10.6.4 to get trackpad working properly again)

Installing WoW on it now to see how it compares to Windows.

Not going to do it, but the thought crossed my mind to use Bootcamp to install Windows. However, probably won't work right due to the emulated efi and would just be ironically lame.

Nevermind...I got it all worked out.

got everything working except for built-in WLAN.

I have successfully installed 10.5.4, 10.5.7, 10.6.2, 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 in my Asus G51J 3D,

the only problems are trully shutdown/poweroff and built-in WLAN.

I can only trully shutdown and poweroff in 10.5.4 version.

No matter adding Poweroff Fix or OpenHaltRestart.kext, the other versions just shutdown its CPU and screen

while the power light is always on until I press the Power button off.

Do you have the similar problem in your Asus G51VX laptop ?

If no such problem, how did you solve it ?

I believe it is due to DSDT.aml error.

Thanks for your time and patience.

I had written of my success a while back and recently attempted the same installation of Snow Leopard 10.6 on to an external USB drive (my internal guys are pretty full) and everything's gone smooth for the most part. I couldn't live with the slow iPhone network speed of my iPhone tether so I bought a Netgear WG111v3 network card at Best Buy for $29.99 and am loving the fact I now have internet. As I get more and more used to Snow Leopard (I successfully upgraded to 10.6.2 but am going to stay on this for a while since I haven't found too many success stories for 10.6.[3,4]) I've come to realize there are some annoyances I hope you guys can help me resolve or confirm also affect you.

1. While I've become accustomed to Terminal (and actually like the way things must be done in an escalated manner) I can't seem to find a good text editor besides pico, nano, etc. which will allow me to move freely or even use Shift+RightArrow or Shift+LeftArrow to select and delete text...minor nuisance, but still

2. The BIGGEST problem I have right now is the keyboard. The ASUS keyboard does not conform to standards, per se, and so the backslash/pipe key is "dead" as in keycodes register as "0" for both the backslash and Shift+backslash. I tried using Ukelele to create a new layout but as soon as I tell it to add this key, it doesn't even register it. The other applications pick up the backslash as that "double-s" character (think it's German essett (sp?)) and the Shift+backslash gives me that plus/minus character. I managed to use a DefaultKeyBinding.dict file to enable the Home/End keys on the numeric keypad and make some changes (sorry, I can't get used to the Command+AnyKey to copy/paste/select/skip words/etc.) that I am loving. Please help!!

3. I removed the SleepEnabler.kext because when I initially installed SL, I got a kernel panic. Anyone know of a safe kext to allow me to sleep? I've turned off sleep for now anyway, but am curious.

4. When I press Fn+F7 to switch displays, the whole system freezes. Anyone else have this happen to them?

5. How in the world do I disable the numeric keypad? Considering the Delete/Home/PageUp/PageDown/End keys are sooooo far away from the rest of the keyboard, I prefer using the numeric keypad functions for everything. This is really annoying, too.

6. I recently left headphones plugged in and the rebooted. Once back in SL, I couldn't get any sound whatsoever and I had to reboot with the headphones unplugged to regain sound. Anyone else experience this?

7. I really hate the whole minimize/hide thing...I'm so used to minimizing windows with the *minimize* button when using my mouse and if back to the keyboard ALT-TABing back to it...in SL, it activates the minimized window but keeps it minimized unless you select Window><your window> or ALT-TAB + UpArrow + Enter to restore it. Silly.

Overall, I'm happy with SL and, now that I have internet, am getting pretty addicted at finding software for my PC. My only complaint with software for SL is there aren't many free alternatives. Most of the software I want to use (Switche/Witch for example) needs to be purchased...really makes it difficult to move over to Mac when there is such a small selection of freeware.

TL;DR: main issues are:

backslash/pipe key outputs "double-s" character and "plus-minus" character (BIGGEST issue because I do a lot of development).

How to disable numeric keypad?

Fn+F7 (switch displays) while in SL freezes computer.

EDIT: clicked the quote and reply buttons on jsl's post and the whole thing got included in this post. Weird.

EDIT 2: It did it again!

jsl, just a quick question: I thought I had the same issue with the shutdown since I was doing the same for the first few times I shut down. One time, however, I left it shutting down and stepped away for a few minutes and when I got back, the computer was off. My shutdown now takes a couple of minutes *after* the monitor's gone blank, and the lights look like they're stuck. Have you tried leaving it like that for a while? I'm running 10.6.2 and copied the OpenHaltRestart files from the latest Empire EFI disc.

Hope that helps :)

EDIT 3: Screw it...stupid board keeps adding a NEW post and a quote/reply to jsl's post in my old post...ugh...my post count didn't even increase :(
