Hey!

Right now I've got at least 3 problems left with my Hackintosh (10.6.2, i5, UD4)

1.Until now I couldn't get sound working. It's the ALC888 chip in the UD4 (without P!) I tried Voodoo HDA,ALC 888 HD and Tonyx86's method (could it be that you compiled/ changed... some files like DSDT.aml just for your UD2 board or are your files compatible with all Gigabyte P55 boards except for extra hardware?)

2. Networking doesn't work too well. DHCP isn't working, manually assigned IP's can work, but just 100 Mbit, no Gbit

3. I have 3 S-ATA devices and for OS X working properly I can only use the Gigabyte S-ATA ports. Even then I discovered an odd behavior: when copying files from DVD's, the internal HD slows down extremely to under 10 MB/s. The DVD drive only copies with 2-4 MB/s (I think it's the same issue)

Can you please give ideas on how to fix that?!

Hey all,

I've been following the thread with interest and am ready to have a go installing SL. I'm buying all my hardware at the moment but had two questions for those of you with working installs.

1. What video card? I don't play games and want as silent a solution as possible.

2. What wireless cards are people using?

Thanks.

Could be that your UD4 isn't compatible with the DSDT.aml- I compiled it using my UD2. Try removing that file and installing VoodooHDA.kext for sound. Then making a new Extensions.mkext in Extra with Kext Utility.

Hmm..., could it be that this has anything todo with the new bootfile? I think with iBoot5 Sound was OK, but now, with the new boot i get only stuttering sound and not all soundsources (Vodoosound shows the soundsources but stutters also) i Tried Voodoo and all others who may apply....

Because my HD isn't that good also (often needs repairing, which have nothing todo with my install, it was flaky before also...), i will make a completely new install on another HD and will report back.

tonymac, do you have all sound-sources listed in your controlpanel and do you relly have sound without any stuttering and his and pop issues under the new bootfile?

I am curious how you patched Fakesmc.kext to allow for CPU core temps. I have been looking for a way for my i7 860 core temps being read in iStat with no luck.

Here is a 32/64 version that will let you monitor all core temperatures. Personally, I use istat to do so.

Still no luck here on wake from sleep - I've tried adding returns to the DSDT WAK section, but it isn't getting there. Anyone have luck with WAK?

I want to build a strong computer with this MB/i7... could you guys guide me through the other stuff also? What would be a good GFX ? and RAM ?

Looking forward 1GB GTX and 6GB of RAM.

EDIT: I tried something but it's my first time...

Western Digital WD10EADS Caviar Green 1TB SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM x2 (for Win/OSX)

LG CH08-LS10 Black BLU-RAY 8X Reader & 16X DVD Writer Combo Internal SATA Lightscribe Retail Box (will this work... if we do some VMware Fusion magic? The software running from Windows? Otherwise, could it work only for DVD Burning/Reading stuff leaving the BD part when I boot on Windows?)

Intel Core i7 860 Quad Core Processor Lynnfield LGA1156 2.8GHZ Hyperthreading 8MB Cache Retail Box (the cpu :D )

Gigabyte P55M-UD2 mATX LGA1156 P55 DDR3 2PCI-E 2PCI SATA2 RAID Sound GLAN Motherboard (i think something is wrong with this choice... wont have enought SATA port i guess.. for HDx2/DVD and is that dual channel ram only?!)

Enermax EMD525AWT MODU82+ 525W ATX12V V2.3 24PIN Power Supply (i heard these are really quiet.. want the tower to run really quiet)

XFX Radeon HD 4870 750MHZ 1GB 3.6GHZ GDDR5 PCI-E 2XDVI HDCP Video Card (is that ok? or nvidia is better? osx compatibility wise)

Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1600C8 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 8-8-8-24 Core i7 Memory Kit (i guess any ram could work... are these strong enough?)

Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300 ATX 3X5.25 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB & Audio (does the Mini state change anything? i picked it randomly.. could change the case i dont mind.)

and some random Network PCI Card.

Thanks for your advice! =D

There are a few issues with your build...

Firstly, OS X has no Blu-Ray support whatsoever. If you are dual-booting or possibly using a VM, you can use it there; otherwise you will be left in the dark. I might be wrong in that there might be either some sort of fix or a 3rd party software that can use it, but I doubt it.

You have tri-channel RAM (I think) which the i7 920 would use, but the newer i7's and i5's do not. As hard as you may look, the P55 chipset uses only dual-channel RAM (I always saw tri-channel RAM as pointless anyhow). You should buy RAM in pairs.

If you haven't already (shameless plug alert), you can look at the P55 Build Guide I have made that I released a while ago. Just use it for a sense of direction/budget:

P55Collection.zip (This also has the motherboard parts list)

Hey everyone- just posted an Alternate guide to installing Snow Leopard that is not system-specific. Instead of using the USB installer, it installs directly- I know a few of you were successful with this method, and I've now tested it. Also, you install the 10.6.2 update before booting- therefore no need for Voodoo kernels anymore. It will probably work for any computer that can run the Snow Leopard Vanilla kernel, not just P55 boards.

Also a DSDT editing guide.

For Dual Boot with 2 separate hard drives, all you have to do is:

1. Install Snow Leopard

2. Unplug Snow Leopard hard drive

3. Install Windows (7/Vista/XP)

4. Plug Mac hard drive back in

5. Set hard drive priority in BIOS to load Mac hard drive 1st

6. When Chameleon loads, stop countdown and you should see both Operating Systems!

You can then load either Mac or Windows! :)

EDIT: Nvm, figured it out.

Okay I recompiled DSDT.aml with DSDT Patcher GUI and checked it with DSDTSE and it was alright. Then I rebooted and the Mac worked as before. Just fine except for the few issues.

I can't get sound working on this board. Please help me!

I think that could be the reason thaat Quake 4 and Age of Empires III don't work? The sound issue? When I plug in my USB headset I will get at least to the game menu of AoE III but then it fails at the loading process (it does not find the game maps) Quake 4 crashes right after the boot screen (I wanted to check the graphics capabilities of my card in OS X, in Win 7 it works for sure)

The S-ATA southbridge thing: Where can I get support for this ICH 10...thing? The Intel S-ATA ports are not recognized, System Profiler just shows Unknown AHCI and the S-ATA DVD drive and HD are listed under ATA!

I've been trying to use Tonymacx86's new guide, but I keep getting the following error when I try to start up:

Loading Operating System...

boot0: GPT

boot0: testing

boot0: testing

boot0: error

Tony has already suggested making sure that I'd unchecked the "ignore ownership on this volume" box on my Snow Leopard drive (just double checked it - it's unchecked), and that I unplug all other drives (i.e. my USB drive). Unfortunately, I'm still having the same issue. Any ideas?

Edit: I've just noticed that my internal SATA drive that I've installed SL on is listed in Disk Utility as "Connection Type: External". I formatted the drive and installed the OS using an external enclosure (all I've got is my MBP). Could this be the issue?

Still no luck here on wake from sleep - I've tried adding returns to the DSDT WAK section, but it isn't getting there. Anyone have luck with WAK?

As a developer,

I am currently investigating the problem, my first thoughts:

I don't think that WAK setup in dsdt is the problem, because:

- we need a mechanism like sleepenabler to prevent the kernel to rely on CPUPowerManagement to do the acpi_sleep

- sleep works perfectly on my core 2 duo with the same wak section in my dsdt (both gigabyte motehrboards)

Also, sleepenabler has currently no effect on the sleep issue

I am curently rebuilding the 10.6.2 kernel because I already check the source of SleepEnabler and I don't see relevant changes to do for LGA1156 mobos so that SleepEnabler works.

I belive it has to do with the current 10.2 kernel, so :

I decide to invatigate the kernel, and I believe I have a track ...

I use the latest darwinbuild tool to build the kernel and was successful to do so,

but as for now, it seems i can't get a useable version (my compiled kernel version boots but so slowly that it's unusable).

FYI, to build the kernel I proceeded this way:

I installed the following pre-requisites for darwinbuild:

macports, then added /opt/local/bin paths in my .profile,

then ran :

sudo port sync

sudo port selfupdate

then installed subversion :

sudo port install subversion

then checked out the darwinbuild using this command:

svn co http://svn.macosforge.org/repository/darwinbuild/trunk darwinbuild

Then I followed the instruction to build a (10C540) version of the kernel using this help:

darwinbuild help

Anyone successfully building a 10.6.2 vanilla kernel that boots like the original please PM me ..

This means, that boot1 is probably not found. I would think, you have boot1 not correctly installed on one of your HFS+ partitions.

dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2 (0s2 must be replaced with the right disk and partition)

install boot1 on a partition. Maybe you have selected a wrong disk ?

The boot1 error is more known by me.

Same problem by me. All S-ATA Drives are shown as external on my computer. I hope it will be solved with the next update. (Tony told that imacs use special software) Has anybody a solution for that ? Maybe a DSDT fix ?

Good work man- keep it up! I think we just need someone to give us the iMac kernel... Must have some special sauce in that build Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Build 10C2234). Who knows someone with a P55 iMac? ^_^

I am ordering parts for a build this weekend. I've got everything I need picked out except a video card.

i5, 2x2GB, P55-UD2

I'm thinking GeForce9500 series for compatibility, but I don't know which brand is best. I'd like to spend less than $70. There are so many to choose from. Any suggestions are appreciated on brand and/or chipset. I just want to order by Sunday and I don't know anything about newer video cards.

Also I have heard of people having trouble with different brands of USB Flash Drives. I was going to buy a Patriot or Corsair, does it matter?

I can't wait to have a new computer! :P :P

It is to important to tell us a bit more. Have you installed mac os x to harddiskdrive (HDD) already ?

Have you a USB drive by the help you can boot up your installed MAC OS X ?

Or can you only boot the install DVD that use integrated boot loader ?

Or have you copied the installation on an USB drive that boot up ?

Have you access to another Mac or at least PC ?

And maybe how you installed the boot loader (chameleon) ?

Your Harddisk configuration is also interesting. One Harddisk or more ?

Harddisk must use GUID partition scheme, if you can remember.

Have windows installed too ?

Than tell us on which HDD is installed Mac OS X and where Windows.

Mac OS X and Windows seems not to work on the same HDD.

Success! :D

Here is my hardware:

MB: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 (F4)

CPU: Intel i5 750

RAM: 8Gb Kingston valueram 1333MHz

Video: PowerColor Radeon HD4870 512Mb

HDD: WD Raptor 300Gb

How did I get there:

I've followed tonymacx86's 1st guide. His PC EFI v10.5 update solved issue with ATI card.

You can also use his easier 2nd guide if possible. I've stuck at step 3 though.

The last problem I ran into - I was unable to boot 10.6 install. Had exactly the same problem like lectrcman's pictured in his post with some kind of disk initialization error and automatic shutdown. Tonymacx86's blog user JohnnyC came up with a solution to extract 10.6.2 kernel from combo update and use it instead of Qoopz.

And it worked!

Here is extracted kernel just in case you may need it (7Mb zip).

Lot's of thanks to Tony and whole community!

Try the following if having a problem booting SL due to disk initialization error.

1. boot SL into single user mode via -s

2. mount the disk as instructed on the screen: /sbin/mount -uw /

3. type exit -- this will get you out of single-user mode and began the multi-user boot process into the full SL desktop

This step is not required once you're at 10.6.2.

Remember to configure your SATA as AHCI. This is important.

Have you a USB drive by the help you can boot up your installed MAC OS X ?

Yes to all of the above. I can boot off of my HDD by starting up off of my USB key and interrupting the Chameleon installer, then selecting my Snow Leopard drive. Everything boots perfectly like that (though I haven't tested sound or ethernet yet).

Have you access to another Mac or at least PC ?

I have access to both OSX and Windows XP on my MBP.

And maybe how you installed the boot loader (chameleon) ?

I used Tonymacx86's Alternate Guide #1. I installed everything on my HDD (OSX, Chameleon, Boot and mach-kernel, Extras folder) using an external USB case, then I installed that HDD inside my tower.

One odd thing is that even once I've installed it internally my HDD is listed in Disk Utility as being external in my Hackintosh. Not sure if that's normal or if it matters.

I have only 1 HDD, it uses GUID, and I'm only trying to install OSX. Windows will come later once OSX is running smoothly (should that be on a separate drive, or is a same drive install OK?).

Will all of this be a lot easier once we have the files from an i7 iMac?

I have been doing some experimenting with sleep. My findings are that my system will sleep perfectly if I have one stick (2Gb) of memory installed, as soon as I install more it will not sleep. It will also power down and not hang with one stick.

I think the problem with the sleep is related to the way the system see the ram. I have run OSX86Tools and selected auto set ram and it will only show 2 GB in about this Mac. As soon as I select restore ram to default it will show 8 gigs. By the way I selected Auto set CPU info and it shows i7 860 with all the little trade marks perfectly in about this Mac.

My motherboard is MSI P55-GD65, Kents: EvOreboot, Fakesmc, NullCPUPower Management, and the new SleepEnable. I am running the vanilla kernal.

Could someone please try to run sleep with one stick of ram and report your findings? I really do not have the knowledge to go any further with this. I hope maybe someone with more knowhow can finger this out.

Thanks.
