Sorry - I can't believe I missed that.

One last thing...if I dismount the ISO file in VMware and turn on the VM, I get a message stating, No Operating System Found, or something to that effect. Is this to be expected?

I may have mis-understood the voodoo-test.pdf manual, but I thought after I had updated /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist with this entry rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo.alpha3 -v rd=disk0s2 that the OS would boot w/o the DVD or ISO attached?

1. Do you still have darwin.iso in the VMware folder?

2. Can you post the output of the mount command inside the Leopard guest?

Affirmative - darwin.iso is still in c:program files(x86)VmwareVmware Workstation folder - see attached image.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by the mount command inside the Leopard guest?

Open a terminal windows in Mac OS X and type mount then press enter. Post the output from the terminal.

Thanks.

Hmm not sure what is happening. Never seen this before and my verison of this with the voodoo kernel works, and has same mount points. Edit your VMware settings for the CD/DVD for the guest to "Use physical drive" to "Auto Detect", and make sure "Connected" and ""Connect at power on" are off.

That was it...I left that checkbox selected to Connect at Power On. Once I unchecked that box and rebooted, there was no message about a missing OS.Even though I have Caffeine installed and running, I still experience lock ups. Is there any other way to troubleshoot these lock ups? I am considering a rebuild using non-Voodoo package that you released, now that I know my installation issues were caused by the DVD drive. Donk - would you consider the voodoo.alpha release to be more unstable? I would think once the OS is up and running the voodoo release would have not impact on the stability of the OS, but maybe I'm wrong in assuming this.

Thanks for the guide!

Here's a screenshot of Leopard 64 10.5.8 running on Workstation 6.5.2 on a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 host.

A couple of observations I made along the way:

* I used a 10.5.6 install DVD ISO mounted for the DVD drive, after a clean install I immediately upgraded to 10.5.8 which took a loooong time.

* After the 10.5.8 updated finished I installed the Fusion 2.0.5 VMware tools provided in the package. I ended up with a gray screen on reboot that that said I had to restart, which showed up on every restart, putting me in an endless loop. I resolved it before starting with "-v" startup option, subsequent boots worked fine.

* Getting VMware shared folders to work.

-- The pdf is missing quotes around the file/path for the .sh file to edit.

-- For those that dislike nano or prefer a graphical editor the follow command will allow you to edit the .sh script in TextEditor:

sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit "/Library/Application Support/VMware Tools/services.sh"

-- The pdf docs for the mount path didn't match the path in the .sh file. My .sh file read as

'/Volumes/VMware Shared Folders' not '/Volumes/Shared Folders' as specified in the pdf.

-- Not so obvious in the pdf, but the --restart switch has two dashes behind it, not one.

Thanks for the guide!

Great recap Talyn - I noticed these things you mentioned above as well and meant to let Donk know as well. You beat me to it.

Question for you...when you say the update 10.5.8 took a looong time, are you referring to this download process? (Screen attached) I began the download last night before I went to bed and I'm still stuck at this screen which at times seems like the VM is locked up.

I also noticed that the clock within the guest OS is out of sync, so I guess it is locking up at times.

Thx again!

The download was fairly quick, the install took about 45 minutes or so. The install progress bar animation seem to not grow for a long while, but eventually jumped from 25% to 100% quickly.

My clock is in sync, did you make sure to install the Fusion VMware tools package provided by Donk?

I haven't had any freezing problems, did you make sure to :

1.) From Apple->System Preferences->Energy Saver set Computer Sleep & Display Sleep to never, and make sure the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" and "Allow power button to sleep the computer" are unchecked.

2.) From Apple->System Preferences->Desktop & Screen Save->Screen Saver tab set the "Start screen saver:" slider to never.

On a side note, some post installs steps after installing tools I took were to install the driver from post #10, and the patch from post #3 here:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=174735

Post #10 allows you to pick and apply immediately different guest resolutions. And post #3 makes Auto-Fit and Fit-Guest work!

Use kext helper to help installing the kext from post #10 easier to install:

http://cheetha.net/

For post #3's autofit support you need to unzip/copy the attachment (vmware-tools-guestd) to the "/Library/Application Support/VMware Tools ".

Edit: Another thing to check concerning your clock issue... Are you running on a laptop or a CPU that throttles its speed? I'm running VMware on my laptop and VMware gave me warning and a link to instructions on how to specify in C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation\config.ini a lock to my laptop's max CPU speed (2.2ghz C2D in my case), so my config.ini looks like this:

host.cpukHz = "2200000"

host.noTSC = "TRUE"

ptsc.noTSC = "TRUE"

Thanks for all the tips! I went ahead and rebuilt using the original vmware-darwin-200 package that Donk had released, rather than the Voodoo.Alpha release. I was able to install successfully, updated to 10.5.8 and installed the iPhone SDK w/o issue. I have still seen a few lock ups since the I have re-installed the fresh build. It's really strange the way it locks up...sometimes I still can move the mouse around in specific apps but in other apps I get the beach ball.Yes - I am using Donk's darwin.iso (VMware Guest Tools). I went forward w/ your suggestions and was able to get multiple resolutions setup in the Guest OS. We will see if I experience any locks over night. I love that easy kext installer! I'm sure that will get me into plenty of trouble :)I am running this on a Q6600 proc which I wouldn't have thought would be throttled under any sort of power management savings utility. However, when I opened PC Wizard on the host machine and watched the clock rate for the CPU I did notice it dropping, as if it is being throttled. So, I checked that config.ini and it was already set to 2400000 with both values set to TRUE.We will just have to wait and see if it locks up on me since I have made each of those little tweaks as well as running caffeine to keep the Guest OS awake.

Thanks for all the updates. I am about to head off on vacation so will be less active for 3 weeks. However, I am going to spend a some time on next version of the package and will take everything mentioned here into account.

Almost 48 hours have past and still no lock ups have occured within the Guest OS! The abolve tweaks to the Mac OS X System Preferences must have did the trick.

Glad it now works. Did you disable Speedstep in your BIOS? VMware always recommends that you disable this as it can impact the virtual timers in the guest.

Hi,

Thank you for developing this VMware fix, it is so good.

I have a question. What version of VMware fusion did you get the VMware tools from? Was it v2.05?

Also, on the PCWiz VMware build guide they recommend disabling all serial ports and floppy drive in the VM MAC BIOS to speed up the VM.

Thank you

I ve my VM running Leo 10.5.7 for months now, thanks to Donk!

Today I got iWork 09 installed fine, no problems.

Numbers opens fine but when I try to use any template or a blank one I just can't see anything in the canvas area. Just got a white area.

The same happens to Pages. But when I click the full screen button I can see very quickly the text from the template appears and then all goes black. Pressing ESC, exits the full screen. While exiting, I can see the text again but then the page gets all white. I know the text is there, I just cannot see it. The same happens in Numbers.

In Keynote, when trying to play a presentation I got a message saying that I don't have enough VRAM to play the slideshow at the current screen resolution. I'm @ 1280x800.

It looks like a rendering/video problem and that's why I'm posting this question here.

I also would like to know if its safe to update to 10.5.8.

I also would like to know if its safe to update to 10.5.8.

1. iWork 09 issues have been reported before where blank areas on screen. No known work around at present. There is a hacked video driver for VMware, and you could try that, but I have not tried myself and on vacation currently so not easy to test. Search this forum for VMware SVGA II driver. Let me know if it works as planning to add to a post-installation package.

2. To increase VRAM size edit the VMX file and add an entry to give 128Mb (max I think):

svga.vramSize = "134217728"

3. Upgrade to 10.5.8 is fine.

No success on the driver and setting the memory size didn't work either.

Will try the update to 1.5.8

I sucesffuly got this installed and booting on a beta version of Vmware Workstation 7 (running on Windows 7 RTM, earlier vmware versions dont work with Windows 7 when using NAt)

My only problem is that my mouse cursor doesnt work and gets stuck to the top left of the screen! Anyone know what might be causing this? The keyboard seems to work fine as I can nvaigate Mac OS using it and my mouse buttons works because i am able to click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen but the cursor doesnt move at all! Its really weird and obviously makes Mac OSX useless. I read this thread but it seems no one else had this issue.

Try the settings in the manual to disable virtual USB keyboard and mouse and use the virtual PS2 emulation in VMware.

I added this in my vmx file

mouse.vusb.enable = "FALSE"

and still get the problem. I had tried that earlier but i did it again just to make sure and mouse still gets stuck.

I am on the private beta as well, and won't say too much due to the NDA. However it does work for me with no problems, but using Windows XP SP3 for the host OS. Wonder if there is some issue with Windows 7? Next steps would be to post the infomration I usually request which is in post http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1189918. Also what mouse are you using on the host?

I clicked your link but it just took me to the first page of this thread and i read through I didnt really see anything pertaining to info you need to troubleshoot. Odd as it took me straight to the post. Here are the details:

To help me understand some of the issues that are being seen can I ask everyone who has a problem to post the following information please when first logging the problem:

  1. VMware product and version being used
  2. Host operating system
  3. Host CPU
  4. Vanilla Leopard or other distro
  5. Version of Leopard 10.5.6, 10.5.7 etc.
  6. Please attach the VMX file
  7. Please attach the latest vmware.log file

(Please remember I have stated that I do not support anything other than vanilla with this method.)

For manual clarifications and additional updates from testing; e.g. ESX configuration please use your judgement as to whether to post this information. Also remember I do this in my spare time, and have full time job, family and other interests, so I will answer when I can.

I recreated the machine again, I figured one of the vmx edits must have caused it because when I boot the leaopard cd it got stuck int he corner (and I know the mouse was working while installing or I would not have been able to install Leopard lol) and sure enough it is working now. I had started editing my vmx file until I realized I was getting the cpu error because I did not have the darwin.iso loaded in the cd-drive for the virtual machine!

Thanks for all your help dude, your fix is killer1 Mac OS within WIndows 7 is just awesome as {censored}!

One thing, I did load the vmware tools through vmware workstation 7 but when I click on the install vmware tools icon within Mac OS nothing happens, do I have to install it manually or something?

Also I know I can set my resolution within Mac OS but is there a way to have it autoresize like other guest machines do in Vmware?

Thanks for all your help so far Donk1
