Donk
As a follow up to my last post, I tried connecting an ISO of 10.5.6 from my desktop to the virtual CD and got the installation to start. Once it checks for the install, it gives me an error that it can't install on this computer, ok or restart. Any ideas as to what it's checking?thanks, rich attached is lastest log. All other info is in my last post. What is the actual CPU part? I suspect that that it is not a compatible processor. Remember you need a CPU that Leopard supports natively. The only other option is to try the experimental Voodoo kernel based package listed in the first post.
Donk
It's a Xeon CPU. I tried the voodoo package with the same result.Any other ideas? thanks, rich Check your processor here http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx. Also I assume you have properly enabled VT-x in the BIOS and cold power cycled the machine.

Donk
The X3220 Xeon is on that list. When you say check the BIOS for VT-x, is that on the host or guest BIOS? And cold power cycling, again, host or guest? thanks, rich Host for both.

rhb
Host for both. Virtualization technology was already set to enabled in the BIOS, but now it's been cold rebooted. Now when I try to start up the VM OSX Voodoo mahine it says there is no operating system. I tried to change the iso back to darwin.iso, then removed and recreated the VM in inventory and it gives me the same error. What did I do? thanks, rich

newsguy
Hi, Got this working but only with one cpu. Anytime I try to increase the cpu count to 2 it chokes. Here are my system specs: VMware Workstation 6.5 & VMware Player Windows 7 64-bit Intel QX6700 Core 2 Extreme (quad core) 3.46 Ghz (overclocked) 8 GB Ram I allocated 4gb to Leopard, I added the two lines to my config file: monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware" monitor.virtual_mmu = "software" My processor is overclocked to 3.46 ghz, the stock speed is 2.66 ghz. I have tried to clock it back to stock, turned off speedstep but the same thing happens. Anytime I set 2 processors Leopard freezes up and returns a message that I need to reboot; vmware reports the cpu needed to be reset. It works perfect with one processor core at 3.46 and at 2.66 and with 4gb of ram to it. But I'd really like to take advantage of the other core if possible. I have used the stock kernel that comes with the package and the voodoo one, both with the same results. Have also tried using both darwin and darwin-64, no go. Only can use one processor/core and it works fine, anytime I increase it to two it will almost always freeze and require a reboot either on boot of the VirtualMachine or right after the desktop shows up. Donk
What did I do? thanks, rich I think the best bet is to start from scratch and create another new VM. Also don't set darwin.iso as the boot cd, which you seem to imply in the last post. Other than that I can't see what is going wrong.

rhb
Host for both. Well I tried again over the weekend with Voodoo. I figured out why i couldn't boot. It was because I have never unistalled the first Darwin driver setup script. I unistalled, then reinstalled with voodoo substitution and it now boots into the installer, but unfortunately it stilll won't install on my Xeon machine. I've tried both 32 and 64 bit versions with same end result. On another machine I decided to try the installation with VMware Server over Ubuntu 8.0.4. I got everything set up for the OSX VM, then modified the VMX file with my editor. Now my problem is that I can't seem to navigate back to the Virtual Machines folder to replace the vmx file. When I try using Gnome, it says I don't have permission (root created it). When I use terminal mode and log in as SU the Virtual Machines folder shows up in Green, which from my reading says it's actually a soft link. I am not very familiar with Linux and I am now stuck on now to find and replace the darwin.vmx file. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, rich

x86_64
Donk, The "VMware Shared Folder" alias on the desktop points to nowhere. I shared a folder (using System Preferences/Sharing), but the alias still doesn't work. Does your fix in your manual (ex: mount -t vmhgfs -o uid=<XXX> .host:/ '/Volumes/Shared Folders') resolve this desktop alias problem or does this fix resolve a completely different issue? Anyway, how do you fix the desktop alias (VMware Sharred Folder) issue? Another question: What do you put for the UID? I put 501 (for the first Administrator account) on the virrtual machine. Is this right? This is the only account that I have establish on the virtual machine. I set it up when I installed Mac OS X Leopard. I am using Fusion 2.0.5. Thanks, x86_64
rhb
DonK, Now I've tried it on my Core2Duo laptop with VT-x enabled, with Ubuntu and VMwareServer 2 with the same result I had on my ESXi4 server. I can get the installer to run, but the installer then says it can't install on this machine. Attached are the vmx and log files for the new machine. I tried Darwin-64 and Voodoo. The attached setup is voodoo. I've attached a snapshot of the screen. FWIW, I figured out the issue on the UBUNTU issue of my last post. I had to edit the vmx file as the the SU. I found a nice way to it at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo. This is a trick from the this thread on the Ubuntu Forums. Create a launcher with the following command: gksudo "gnome-open %u" When you drag and drop any file on this launcher (it's useful to put it on the desktop or on a panel), it will be opened as root with its own associated application. This is helpful especially when you're editing config files owned by root, since they will be opened as read only by default with gedit, etc. vmware.log.txt OSX_10.5.6.vmx.txt

Donk
Will this work on my E-System EI 303 Pentium 4 3.06GHZ P4M800P7MB Motherboard. What is the actual processor number? Then look it up here http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx and see if it VT-x enabled. IF it is you will also need to check that your BIOS enables it. This is described in the manual!
