MSoK
Thank you for the fast reply! It's not the restore dvd. It's the retail 10.6.3 snow leopard server dvd (Diskutility --> New Disk Image) (Was for the old mini's). Guess I should convert it to ISO. Does this work with the Intel Xeon X3430? (Basically a Core i5) I will reserve one server to deal with vSphere client. I will report back when I progressed further! Graphics performance should not be a Issue, I will enable remote deskop and then use the apple remote desktop software. Works Incredibly fast with the Mac Mini's in my Server Rack. I guess this would be also for a virtual machine. I have found installing from the original DVD better, but ISO should also work fine but best to use ImgBurn to create your ISO, about 8GB in size. You will also need the CPUID mask line in your VMX for 10.6.3, link below: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1551966
Mokonack
I'm having trouble installing Leopard 10.5.6 on VMWare 7.1. I've tried the voodoo iso as well as Albert's VMWare patch. With voodoo, I can load the OSX iso, but get an error indicating that OSX Cannot be installed on this machine. With Albert's patch, VMWare does not recognize the OSX iso image (which I assume it should, IE it should not require a separate darwin iso). Der Jeff
Hi all, I was wondering if some kind person might post a link to the latest and greatest download and manual for installing snow leopard into vmware fusion 3.1. I've been trying to trawl through this 100+ page thread, but I'm just not finding what I need. I think that I have the latest darwin.iso which is 311? What I'm really needing is the manual! Jeff Jeff, If you install Albert's "Unlocker" on your Mac with Fusion 3.1.2 installed, then you should be able to install the client version of Snow Leopard, the server version is supported directly by Fusion using the New Virtual Machine Wizard as is the client version of SL once you have installed the "Unlocker", but you need to make sure you have the retail DVD of Snow Leopard. If I am mis-undersatanding your question please clarify.

I downloaded Albert's Unlocker from the the first post in this topic: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=220750 This is dated June 10, 2010. Is this the most up-to-date version of this script? I ran the unlocker per the instructions in the readme and it seemed to do some stuff, no errors generated. When I launch Fusion should I now have options to install SL Client? I only have the four Server options. It also doesn't 'recognize' my SL disc, as in it throws the message "Continue without disc." Am I supposed to just select the 10.6 server and point it at my client dvd or should it be giving me a 'client' option in the Fusion GUI? Many Thanks. Jeff Jeff, Not currently running a Mac, so this is from memory. Choose the relevant server version of SL, either 32 or 64-bit, and point it at your "Client" Retail SL DVD. No, the only options from the Wizard are the server versions, this is the same in VMware Workstation under Windows on a PC, once you have run the "Unlocker". The main difference is under Workstation it provides the OS X support, not present as standard, and adds support to use the OS X "Client" DVD or ISO, in Fusion it adds the support to use the OS X "Client" DVD, in fact it removes the check for "Client" version of OS X, as Apple's EULA only supports virtual instances of Server and only on Mac hardware. In terms of the darwin iso the latest version is 3.1.2, as you have Fusion 3.1.2 installed it will have the latest darwin iso available, and you should be able to install the VMware tools from the menu, if not it is located in /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages/darwin.iso. Open With > DiskImageMounter and you can install and uninstall VMware Tools.
thundolfe
Hi, First, let me say that the work that's been done here over 103 pages is truly outstanding. Great job! That being said, I am trying to get this to work on an ESXi 4.1 box that has been upgraded from 4.0 and am failing. I am a VCP so I know my way around the console. The issue seems to now be that the darwin310 install isn't working properly, and/or 4.1 is not recognizing the new guest OS types. I have followed the manual to the letter here, setting up the .VMX file as requested, but when powering on, VMWare gives a "The guest operating system 'darwin10_64Guest" is not supported." error. I am on local storage, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling the darwin package, and it seemed to go fine: VMware ISO Signature Creator 2.0.0 ================================== VMware ESXi 4.1.0 build-260247 Running on VMkernel and using /usr/lib/vmware/isoimages Backing up files Creating new SHA-1 digests SHA-1 digest for darwin.iso SHA-1 digest for freebsd.iso SHA-1 digest for linux.iso SHA-1 digest for netware.iso SHA-1 digest for solaris.iso SHA-1 digest for winPre2k.iso SHA-1 digest for windows.iso /vmfs/volumes/hostname/vmware-darwin310-macosx1064 Finished! /vmfs/volumes/4bcf70eb-a47c8152-d0ed-78e7d18ef288/vmware-darwin310-macosx1064 # I know my vmx file has "darwin10" in it currently, that was just me messing around - when I've tried it proper I have used darwin10-64 as stated by the manual. Once fired up you can use the console and other basic functions via vCenter, but no power options or indeed any complex operations will work; e.g. vMotion. Something in the vcneter server code filters out any operations with darwin as the guestos.

mtb1ab
Ok, First - Thanks for all the great information in this and some of the other threads. I successfully installed OS X 10.6.3 using the albert's unlocker method and vmware workstation 7. That was on my Core i7 laptop. Now i'm trying to get this running on my desktop which was really the whole point for me. Problem is the desktop is a Phenom Quad Core. I've read and seen that you can't use the albert's unlocker method with AMD - is this correct? If so, i'm assuming I should use the darwin method - which I've tried using darwin310.iso. Not sure what i'm missing. I'm attaching one of my vmx files, vmlog file. I'm sure there is something simple i'm missing but after pouring over this and the other 103 page thread - i'm not sure. Also, I should mention that originally for the first try I just copied my virtual machine over from the laptop - including the vmx file and already installed virtual drive. Not sure if this will work or if I have to reinstall on this machine. Thanks in advance for your help. Wow it is late - this is the 103 or 104 page thread I was looking at. The other one I looked at for the albert unlocker method is here - unlocker method FreeBSD_64_bit.txt vmware.log.txt
qwerty2020
How to resolve "Still waiting for root device" error?I tried installing OSX 10.6 Retail on ESXi.4 After pressing F5 and adding -v to see the logs, the installation stucks at "Still waiting for root device". Tried using SCSI and IDE but same error occured. Same issue was encountered on this page http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...474&st=1840 But the fix was to reinstall esxi, is there another workaround on this? Because I'm just accessing the Esxi using remote vSphere client. I attached the screenshots and logs. Thanks.. I was able to get past that error by issuing this boot command -v -f -x rd=disk1s3 Same result happens either I use SCSI or IDE. I am not sure but I didnt use the legacy_kernel command because I am using 64bit. Anyway I was able to go up to Installation page wherein after I chose the language. Now I am stuck there, I can't move my mouse and pressing enter to continue doesnt seem to work. See screenshot. I RESOLVED THE SECOND ISSUE BY ADDING USB DEVICE ON VM, Now I am working installing it. xbc
I almost have a perfect install. But my machines hangs randomly. I have a 10.6.5 vmware that used to run on server 2.0 using donks method. It was really stable with 2 processors, but the USB kept giving me problems. From the no recognized devices, to messing up the usb until host restart, and also losing the mouse. Since I am trying to dev on the iphone, I needed the usb working. So this was not a good solution. If I didn't use USB the machine was stable 100%. So I switched to Workstation 7.1.3, using Alberts patcher, removed all the Donk's stuff from the image, and modified my VMX to use efi. Now mouse works perfectly (never frezes), and USB devices work perfectly too. But here is my problem. I run the machine with one processor it is stable for hours and days. But if I try 2 or four processors, or 1 core 2 processors or any combination of 2 to 4 processors I get a random crash. Usually happens when it idles. I have tried removing all the power settings to leave it to never sleep, I have caffeine installed, I even tried a weird boot arg sto1=0xfffffff (or something like that suggested in vmwares forums) but nothing works I get random crash. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix using multiple processors? (using a Q6600 on the host) Any help will be appreciated very much as this iss the last step I need to get the vmware SnowLeopard fully functional. In terms of no disk you need to go in to Disk Utility at the OS X Install Screen and you should see your VMware drive, choose Partition and create a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID partition, then when you go back to the OS X install screen you should see the newly created disk. See the link below for a tutorial: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1565645 In terms of the snapshot error, not sure unless you are trying to snapshot the OS X before you have created a disk to apply the snapshot too. Not sure what the problem is, need attached text copies of your VMX and vmware.log files. Couple of thoughts, I always limit the number of virtual CPU's and Core's not to exceed the physical, so 1 CPU and up to 4 Core's, but as far as I am aware adding multiple virtual CPU's or Core's has no impact on performance of the guestOS, it will use up to the maximum available from the physical environment, and adding more CPU's or Core's only sets priorities when you have multiple guests running. Finally if you can I would build a new OS X under Workstation 7.1.3 using the New Virtual Machine Wizard, which offers the option to install OS X Server 10.6 64-bit once you have Albert's "Unlocker" installed. Setup Confirmation: VMWare Workstation 7.1.3 build-324285 Albert's "Unlocker" application Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition Intel Core i5-650 3.2GHz processor (LGA1156) w/ Virtualization enabled in the BIOS Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (install DVD, retail) Added the following line to the .vmx file:cpuid.1.eax = "0000:0000:0000:0001:0000:0110:1010:0101" SCSI Hard Drive configuration in the VM Automatic Virtualization selection in the VM Installed the Audio drivers posted here to enable sound/audio in OSX Apologies if this should be in another thread. Please let me know and I'll move the post accordingly if I don't do it already.
xbc
Well acording to Xbench having 1 core and 4 CPUS is 20 to 30 points better on the cpu benchmarks, Handbrake renders a little bit faster, and overall it feels faster. On the host side I can see from the tast manager (on windows 2003 host) that using one cpu only uses one y my 4 real cpus, using 4 virtual uses the 4 real. Also since I run 5 more always on VMs I do like to have priority for OSX. Here are my vmlog and vmx files for one cpu (this works great no problems). I am waiting for the 4 VM processor to crash to post that log, the vmx file should be the same except the 4 procesors on 1 cpu. For the rebuilding using the tools, I sort of did that. When I changed the EFI settings it didn't boot so what I did was to build a new OSx vm from the workstation menu using Mac OSX 10.6 64bit setting. That worked so I just swapped the virutal disk from the donk's install to the new VM. Made sure all customizations for donk's were removed. I will try a clean install to see if the 4 processor problem is still in a clean new install. Meanwhile if you have a chance to view my vmx and vmlog, to see if you notice anything out of place. Thanks again vmx_vmlog.zip

qwerty2020
Hello again guys, I would like to ask if you're also encountering connection issues on Windows Server to OSX Server to . I successfully installed OSX Server 10.6 on ESXi 4.1(thanks to this forum), now my problem is that whenevery I use VNC or Putty from my Windows Server to remotely connect to the OSX Server, it connects for a few seconds then disconnects. When I try to reconnect, it connects again but then disconnects. To determine that its a windows - osx issue, I tried to connect to a linux server, then ssh to the osx server. SSH works fine.. Is this a known issue? What are the suggested fix? Thanks..
Zenith432
Upgrade to OS 10.6.6 worked Ok. Used the lite update, not the combo update. Haven't tried the App Store.
