VMware Mac OS X Guest Package for ESX, Workstation, Player, Server and Fusion

Ok thanks... yeah I figured out the VNC connection already and that definitely has better mouse performance.

I also discovered that unless I turned the Energy options to never go to sleep, etc. that my machine would totally lock up after 15 mins or so of idle and I would need to reset the VM.

I'm not really to concerned about the sound, etc.. i'm actually really just running OSX to install a linux-based AD Authentication client on which I need to support that has some specific options on OSX I need to familiarize myself with, so performance isn't a huge deal.

I did have a question about the darwin.iso. Am I correct in that it is serving both as a boot loader and the the tools disk image? From reading the manual it seems that the signature files are replaced in order to load this iso from the directory it is copied to during the install. The ESX server just automagically knows to load the darwin.iso as a bootstrap for OSX? I take it that if I run the .sh script with the uninstall, then this would no longer work... and needs to remain persistent even after the initial install?

thanks again for everyone's work on this, it is allowing me to do my testing work without having to purchase a Mac!

Yes, you are correct Donk's darwin iso has a dual role, firstly the pre boot stuff VMware requires to support an OS, other iso's are installed as part of the ESXi install, i.e. ones ESXi supports directly, Wndows, Linux etc. I have uploaded a vanilla darwin 311 iso for those running VMware Workstation with Albert's "Unlocker", link below. But Donk's 310 darwin iso needs to be present for OS X to boot under ESXi, what calls the darwin iso is the entry guestOS = "darwin10-64" in your VMX file, hence no need to mount it.

Once you have installed OS X you can mount Donks' 310 darwin iso to install the VMware Tools and the extra directory has Zenith432's video and sound drivers, althernatively if you wanted the latest 311 VMware Tools mount the darwin iso from the link below, however as stated earlier do not replace the one installed via the sh script, so perhaps better to stick with Donk's 310 darwin iso. So if you run the uninsatall script or replace the darwin iso then OS X will no longer boot, you will get a cannot find an OS or similar message.

http://rapidshare.com/files/419946403/darwin311.iso.html

Also as you have found the energy setting need to be in effect turned off, set to never.

MSOK and Donk,

Wanted to say thank you again for resolving the CPU error message. Now Im running into another issue. Mouse wont be recognized under ESXI 4.1. Stays on the top left of the screen when OSX is asking for the language. I've added my vmx. My keyboard though does work.

Thank you guys for your hardwork and dedication to this project. :)

Has anyone gotten OSX to run in the latest update of VMware Workstation on Windows? My OSX vm has been running without issue until I updated Workstation to 7.1.2 build-301548. I re-ran the OSX guest package install and dropped the updated darwin.iso, but no luck. Suggestions anyone? :)

Thanks in advance.

Workstation 7.1.2 works fine, are you using Albert's "Unlocker" or Donk's darwin iso, the "Unlocker" is what I, Donk and others now use for Workstation and Donk's latest 310 darwin iso for ESXi 4.1. The most common problem is the update, as it is note really an update at all it uninstalls the previous version and then does a fresh install of the new version so any patches are lost. You need to re-install either Albert's "Unlocker" or Donk's 310 darwin iso before trying to run OS X again.

I tried with another Retail DVD 10.6.0 this time but I got the same issue so I think the steps I followed are not the good one.

Is there some documentation updated for ESX(i) and MacOSX installation ? I only found Donk's doc v1.0.0 and inside no indication regarding steps to follow I found on this thread that I should try:

What I have done is that I didnot have to enter step one code to boot from DVD then installation started, create partition and format it then install. I am then asked to reboot the server, but here I don't know what to do, if I run the step 2 command I got a Kernel Panic...previously uploaded with vmware.log and config.

Wait for your help,

Regards,

 no news since one week guys...I just need to know if I am running a good procedure or not..

Try using IDE virtual hard drive instead of SCSI. Also set SCSI.present to FALSE. I am really busy at work and so can't deal with much on this topic at present.

I found that if you did not need any of the legacy commands at initial boot, or during set-up, then they are not required at re-boot.

The thing is that at reboot, I can not boot as during the first boot before installation.

I stay blocked at boot: prompt

Do I have just to press Enter and boot ? Will try Donk's idea using IDE

I know this is not ESXi forum I can not find how to set IDE emulation in ESXi 4.1, what I have to do ? by default when creating a VM it always propose SCSI controller type, where to set IDE emulation ?

Regards,

A bit of a pain but you need to add a new hard drive and then select it as IDE rather than SCSI, then delete the SCSI hard drive, and for good measure before you boot add the scsi0.present = "FALSE" entry to your VMX file.

Also I was looking to confirm the scsi syntax and found an alternative boot string related to getting a kernel panic, sorry if you have already tried this:

You might want to change the busratio from 20 to 9 which is correctly for your E8400 CPU.

Does your hardware have the option to use a PS/2 mouse, may be worth a try with the "FALSE" setting, mouse and keyboard can be an issue in OS X had much the same issue in 10.5 Leopard, we needed to add the PS/2 kext in to the darwin iso, I will check with Donk if it is still included, if not you can add it manually, but will have to find the topic reference, I do not have it to hand but the file you are looking for is ApplePS2Controller.kext.

UPDATE: Had a quick look round and Zenith432 posted details on his Snow Kitty topic, which are relevant and the PS2 controller kext is include in the following file link below:

Hi I would appreciate anyones help in this as I have worked more than 20 hours and simply put, Mac OS cannot and will not install on esx. I have two different esx builds. 4.1 and 4.0. Both cpus support hardware virtualisation and is enabled. I can get snow leopard to work perfectly in workstation 7 but neither sl or leopard will install on esx whatsoever.

I have followed the guide to the letter and added all of the right entries and even downloaded a few templates from other people. I have tried every combination anyone has posted on these forums and it makes me mad how people state that they can get even sl installed on esx but I cant do any of that.

On leopard It will boot but, the hard disk is not writable usins LSI Logic Parallel. If I convert it to SAS it will not boot, every single time. IDE is not an option on either of my esx builds. LSI Parallel is the only available option that will boot into the installer.

On Sl it will kp immediately after loading the apple logo. No changes whatseover made it load even for a second it always freezes every single time.

Please someone help me. Im not a beginner at this and consider myself intermediate with osx hacks, but this has plagued me and I cant get it to work. I can supply any information requested.

To add to the information I have provided, I have downloaded what I believe is the newer darwin.iso which came with a set of instructions. I installed it to the letter and it works, but if I do not press f8 right away it will state bios read error. Reinstalling does not fix the issue and I have reproduced this on 2 different machines. I have approx 4 different darwin.iso files and empireefi but none of the files will get it to work. with empireefi it doesnt even work it just kps even if I use a set of instructions I know works. Not quite sure how that is supposed to work.

OK, I guess we need to go back to basics and run through and check a few things. Firstly this topic is based on using a Retail DVD of OS X, lets go with 10.6 (Snow Leopard), but Leopard should also work. Also for SL we need ESXi 4.1, and Donk's most recent darwin iso 310, link below:

http://rapidshare.com/files/419951154/vmwa...-macosx1064.zip

Use the original manual at the start of this topic to install the darwin iso in to ESXi 4.1.

A quick and dirty recap: Use the vSphere Client to copy the extracted files to the datastore and from the console under ESXi 4.1 go to the directory in the datastore you copied the darwin iso files, run "chmod +x setup.sh" to make the script executable and run the script with "./setup.sh --install" if you have installed previously use the "./setup.sh --uninstall" to remove first.

So now you should have an ESXi 4.1 with support for OS X.

Next step is to create your guest OS, use FreeBSD 64-bit as the template for your OS X, the default HD is SCSI which I have found to be fine, however others have had issues and the recommendation in these situations is to use IDE, unfortunately in ESXi this is not an option at this point, finish the configuration, then add an IDE HD when you get the option to amend the configuration, and delete the SCSI HD.

Next fire up the Guest OS it is not going to work but we need to complete the process to create a VMX file we can then amend.

Now we add the relevant lines to the VMX file, refer to the manual (link below), I am just adding relevant supplemental or replacement instructions in this post

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1186508

#guestOSAltName = "FreeBSD (64-bit)" not always present so do not woory if you cannot fine this entry to comment out with #

guestOS = "darwin10-64" this is the 64-bit Snow Leopard entry, for Leopard take out the "10", i.e. "darwin-64" for 32-bit remove the "-64" i.e. "darwin10" or "darwin"

monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

monitor.virtual_mmu = "software"

ich7m.present = "TRUE"

keyboard.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

mouse.vusb.enable = "TRUE" some issues with mouse not responding change "TRUE" to "FALSE"

usb.present = "TRUE" required but not in as default

smc.present = "FALSE"

scsi0.present = "FALSE" optional may be required if issues getting OS X to boot or install with a virtual SCSI hard drive

Now connect your Retail DVD of OS X Snow Leopard to your Guest OS and boot, missed a couple of steps so "RT*M", and hit the F8 key to drop to the prompt.

At the prompt either F5 or F10 or a combination should let you see your OS X DVD, and once selected will either boot fine with "Enter" or require one of the legacy commands see Donk's and Robert's posts links below:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1495893

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1496653

If still making no headway attach copies of your VMX file and vmware.log file, attach as a text file please rather than in the body of a post, makes troubleshooting much easier, and most of us have a day job too!

Good luck, hope this sets you off in the right direction.

I know how frustrating this can be, especially if you consider yourself to be technically competent, we have all been there, and still are when a new problem comes along.

Fortunately we have Legends like Donk to guide us back to the enlightened path when all seems lost, MSoK.

Thank you for the quick reply. I did get it to work before I saw your post. The problem was that I was using the incorrect darwin.iso As I said, I did follow the directions to the letter. I would hope that they would provide a proper link at the top instead of the darwin 200 iso which clearly does not work nearly as well as the newer one. I had a hard time getting the iso. There are several links but half of them do not work. The directions should also be updated. There were a few problems that I did work around. For instance the guide says that snow leopard is not supported, I do understand that it is for an older iso but why continue to keep that iso if a newer one is available. Second, in the guide it tells me to navigate to vmfs/volume/ and so on but on multiple esx setups this is not the correct path and it is in fact a large number id such as vmfs/volumes/29283as-249040-000-23423e-3421/darwin and so on. But overall I appreciate the hard work gone into this project and the support that has been provided.

This work has taken me literally years and I have a family, job and other interests to take care off. I am going to take more of back seat approach to this and will be probably only fixing things that are important for the foreseeable future. I will, however before I do that, update the guide and create a new topic as this one was never really just ESXi but all VMware products.

As for the point you make about the paths, actually I am correct as well, it is just that it is a symbolic link that has a standard name pointing to the real directory name which uses a GUID. Both are right.

For all those who want to add IDE drive you need to do a custom setup of a new VM. When you get to the hard disk section you can select either SCSI or IDE.

A bit of a pain but you need to add a new hard drive and then select it as IDE rather than SCSI, then delete the SCSI hard drive, and for good measure before you boot add the scsi0.present = "FALSE" entry to your VMX file.

Also I was looking to confirm the scsi syntax and found an alternative boot string related to getting a kernel panic, sorry if you have already tried this:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1496653

You might want to change the busratio from 20 to 9 which is correctly for your E8400 CPU.

So I made 2 tests: one with:

rd(0,1)/legacy_kernel rd=disk0s2 busratio=20 -notscverify

and second with IDE emulation where I add a IDE HDD then boot without additionnel param during the first boot then again same behavior.

For both test I got KP, attached the logs ( screenshot, vmx and log file) if you notice something usefull.

When I do this (on ESX 4.1), I get:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x55c25d): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\".\n"@/Users/nawcom/Builds/xnu-1504.7.4/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1393

Debugger called: <panic>

Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)

then a stack trace.

Hi, Im getting the same message!

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1900(Intel Xeon 5050(Dualcore, VT-x support) with ESXi 4.1 and have pretty much followed everything in the setup manual and also have scoured the forum for answers but still nothing. I was only able to get this far as the above message by using this:

rd(0,1)/legacy_kernel -v rd=disk1s3 busratio=18

Hi Donk,

Firstly I would just like to say thanks for your time to help the community with this project.

Yes I believe it's a Retail 10.6.3 disc, it is the HOTiSO one that is available on torrent sites, I tryed converting the .dmg file to an .img and then to .iso and also made a direct .iso from burning the .dmg file directly to a dual-layer disc, but it made no difference with either method.

I used vmware-darwin310-macosx1064 and I will attach my .VMX file(I saved it as .txt for uploading on here) and ive uploaded some screenshots(The first screenshot is the first screen I get when I boot and press F5, then the last screenshot is the second screen I get after pressing Enter and after it it doing nothing I type in that line of code like above and I get the middle screenshot)

When Donk says retail he means you have purchased the OS X DVD from an Apple store or Apple on-line, cost is minimal (£29, €35, $39) and gives us a level playing field from which to troubleshoot. We are not saying other distributions will not work, but if you have issues then we need to be running from the same base line.

Sorry that is a Apple Developer DVD and I am pretty sure it isn't directly bootable as I have a legitamate copy of it and doen't work for me. We only support DVD bought at Apple because of all the crud people put on ISOs on torrents, plus DVDs with Apple computers are actually tied to the computer.

Hi, I have some problems in ESXi 4.1.0 on a Dell PowerEdge 2900. I'm using an ISO made from a retail 10.6.0 DVD (bought and paid for by me) which I have verified by installing Mac OS X in VMWare Player 3.1.2, no problems at all.

In ESXi I first tried with SCSI HDD, machine reboots just after jumping into graphical mode during installation. Booting with "rd(0,1)/legacy_kernel -v rd=disk0s2" resulted in error about ACPI and kernel panic.

Now I've tried with IDE HDD and the result is an error message about real-time clock not properly initialized (see pics).

VMX is attached. Any ideas?

You appear to be getting to the, I can see the OS X Installation DVD, but then you get an issue, is the legacy kernel command required, try without, if not then you may need to add a busratio setting to correct the timing issue, what are the details of your CPU, i.e. Intel Xeon Processor E5520 (8M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 5.86 GT/s Intel QPI)? This not my area of expertise but can confirm the correct busratio to try which should remove the misconfiguration error you are currently experiencing.
