Sorry, I blinked and think I missed it, but is the new darwin.iso posted at

http://www.filedropper.com/vmware-darwin310-macosx1064

still recommended? seems there might have been a last minute problem with this file?

I'm currently using the 310-b6 from some weeks ago with VMware 7.1 on Win7 host.

I tried 2x to grab the new iso from filedropper but it timed out both times.

thanks guys

It is the one still to use. There may be an issue using SCSI virtual disks on ESXi 4.1, but there are workarounds.

Hi Donk,

maybe you remember to me and my ESXi environment (4.0 U2) with an Intel E5530 CPU. We got Mac OS 10.6 to run after havy investigating the problems with this CPU.

I just want to report that I have now an additional ESXi server with actual 4.1 release. It´s CPU is an X3210 Intel at 2,13Ghz. I have successful transfered the existing virtual Mac OS 10.6.4 machine to this server. I just installed the actual darwin.iso (http://www.filedropper.com/vmware-darwin310-macosx1064) and started the VM. It work´s like a charme.

For all the other people who wan´t to see my vmx-file, I have attached this. Maybe it helps all the others with existing problems.

I will also try to install an new Mac OS X 10.6.0 on this server from the sketch. But I think this won´t be a problem.

I just want to know If I can you now SCSI virtual disks and do you see some potential to improve the performance on ESXi 4.1?

Hi Hippoth

Oh yes remember the work we did to get things working. I have only had a couple of errors regarding SCSI issues and currently have no data to debug. Personally have used it for a few weeks with no problems. Best advice is give it a try and if fails go back to IDE.

As for performance, Snow Leopard seems better as proper code paths added to support it. Posting your VMX is a good idea, and maybe I should post mine which works for me.

Cheers

Donk

Thanks guys! Got 10.6 running on ESXi 4.1 / E5520 with your .vmx file (adapted paths) and booting with .iso from vmware-darwin310-macosx1064.zip.

Update to 10.6.4 succeeded.

Installing VMsvga2_v1.2.2_Common_Installer.pkg to increase gfx resolution failed. Any other tool available to get away from 1024x768?

Be sure to install VMware tools, that's what enables the other resolutions.

I tried today a new install but my mouse does not work - keyboard yes, mouse no. Do you have an idea? The mouse is like the keyboard in the vmx.

Really note sure about this as can't see anything wrong with the VMX file. You could try setting it to false in the file, and the PS2 controller KEXT should pick it up. (Part of the extension in the preboot image.)

Installation of VMware tools was successful, however, after restarting no change. Where are the tools installed?

As far as I am aware the darwin VMware tools have no benefit under ESXi even 4.1

I have posted this in the Unlocker topic, but as it has been discussed in this topic I am posting it here too.

I have just noticed an update is available for VMware Workstation from 7.1.0 to 7.1.1, I am sure this will break the unlocker, but not sure if it will re-install and work under 7.1.1. I will have a look, but be warned until we get a response from Albert and / or Donk DO NOT Update to 7.1.1, MSoK!

So everything is good but for the darwin.iso method follow theses steps:

1. Run my script "setup.cmd uninstall" to replace original files

2. Run the new VMware installer using the full version not the light one

3. When completed run "setup.cmd install"

Note that Fusion and Player are also updated to 3.1.1.

Unlocker also works and will post some details in that thread.

Donk,

Thanks for the quick response, see the Unlocker topic for more info.

I assume there will be a new version of the darwin iso in Fusion 3.1.1, as I have Fusion where is the darwin iso files stored under OS X, so I can take a copy of it and install the 3.1.1 VMware tools in to my Workstation OS X guest, rather than keep bothering you everytime we have an update.

Yep, if all you want are the tools. However they are the same build as 3.1.0 in 3.1.1.

Indeed, I am using your latest 310 darwin iso for ESXi 4.1, where I think you have said the VMware Tools are of no benefit. In VMware Workstation 7.1.x and/or Player 3.1.x, I am using Albert's Unlocker with your enhanced script, so I only need the darwin iso to install the VMware tools, hence the question. Also can you point me to the directory in OS X where Fusion 3.1.x stores the darwin iso, I cannot seem to find it and my linux / BSD command line skills are pretty p**s poor to say the least, just for future reference, LoL!

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.6.3 on my ESXi 4.1

I added the darwin.iso to the vmtools as in the manual descriped.

Then I booted from the darwin.iso, changed the cd to the macosx.iso pushed F5.

It recognized the DVD. I pushed enter to start from the DVD i see the Apple Logo for 2secs then my VM restarts. (I connected directly to the ESXi via vSphere Client)

Anybody know why or is my whole way wrong?

We need posts of your VMX file and the logs, but some pointer, what processor are you using as 10.6.3 has issues with Core i3, i5 and i7 Processors. Is your ISO a retail version. Finally you do not need to boot from the darwin iso, if you have the guestOS = "darwin10-64" or "darwin10" set on your VMX file that takes care of the pre-boot etc.

I edited the wrong vmx file. My fault. Now it's installing :(

First I couldn't move my mouse but I added an USB Controller and then I could move my mouse.

Just a tip to those trying to install under ESX or ESXi... DO NOT use Virtual Center to power on the Guest.

It will fail with "darwin10-64" is not a supported OS.

You MUST connect with your VI client directly to your ESX or ESXi host... Learned this the hard way.

Yes i read this and it works rly good. I installed the VMware Tools and i even updated to 10.6.4. and its still working. :D

Now I have to fix the resolution. I found something in the manual.odf about it.

I had a bit of a banging of heads over on this topic, however I am sorry you had to find out the hard way, the vCentre issue has been posted elsewhere, not just by me, may be worth keeping an eye on the topic link below:

So my OS X Server works fine. I added a 2nd IDE HDD. Formated it and rebooted. Then the problems starts.

The system always want to start from my 2nd HDD and not from my system HDD even when i type rd=disk0s2 which is my system HDD. It doesn't work.

Anybody know why?

I seem to be having a problem getting the booting process working using ESX 4.1 and my Snow Leopard retail DVD (physically in the DVD-ROM drive - or with an ISO). It boots up to:

Darwin/x86 boot v5.0.132 - Chameleon for VMware v2.0-RC4-VMware r10.6.4

Build date: 2010-07-20 08:47:14

4095MB memory

VESA v2.0 4MB (V M ware, Inc. VBE support 2.0)

Press Enter to start up Darwin/x86 with no options, or you can:

Press F5 after you swapped the media. The drive will be rescanned.

Type -v and press Enter to start up with diagnostic messages

The ? and press Enter to learn about advanced startup options

boot: -x -v -f

When I hit return, it just flashes and redraws the same thing. It's as though it doesn't seem to see my DVD. My VMX file is attached. I am connecting to ESX rather than vCenter.
