yup, indeed

sorry for that.

thanks to your suggestions, I could finally boot the vm, with a single IDE disk.

but i'm stuck right here:

post-380540-1275568102_thumb.png

still on ESX 4.0, and booting vanilla 10.6 SL server

vmx below

It can't find the CD/DVD inside the VM. One possible cause is the SCSI adapter is still present try adding the:

scsi0.present = "FALSE"

line to the VMX.

Beta test for new version is here http://www.filedropper.com/darwin310b2. No notes yet and wanted to get it off this damn laptop which keeps crashing!

This is also for Workstation 7.1/Player 3.1/Fusion 3.1 as well as ESX(i) 4.0. SO anyone testing on those products would also be welcome.

As far as I am aware, ESX and ESXi have the same code base, the main difference is ESXi is free, and does not have the extended linux core, service console, etc.

I have noticed the following in your vmx file, it may help:

guestOSAltName = "Other (64-bit)"

guestOS = "darwin" change to "darwin-64"

As well as Donk's suggestion re the SCSI adapter.

thanks, seems like it went a little bit further, and media is supposed to be OK, I already used it on a couple of machines.

BTW, Donk, i'm already using darwin.iso from darwin310b2

Mac Son of Knife

sorry, i modified it a second after pasting the vmx here, it was correct right before.

@Donk Things seem to be working out beautifully under ESXi 4U1. Had a hiccup initially on first boot, as it didn't pick up the connected ISO. Cycling the VM power caused it to pick up the connected ISO.

Installation seems slow, I'm guessing due to the IDE emulated disk. IIRC, Snow Leopard was slow installing the last time I installed it in a VM, but performed great afterwards under regular load.

Kudos Donk. Great work.

I stuck in the preboot and can not start although the install disk ISO is attached to the dvd-drive

The darwin.iso is on my ESXi and I used the setup.sh without any problem.

What could cause the problem?

Well it must not have connected properly or it would show up. Double check it, or remount and press F5 or F10 key at that screen.

This I already tried.

I also know that my ISO works, because I tried it local on VMware Workstation and it was fine.

Now I have copied to the same datastore (I thought this was maybe the problem) and the same result.

Maybe I should try to insert my original DVD into the ESXi server?

Here you can see my vmx-file: http://pastebin.com/UCnd6phe

Is there something wrong?

Are you hitting Enter during the initial countdown? Sometimes if you miss hitting Enter it won't launch the installation, and sits at the Darwin boot prompt.

Yes, either I can press F8 or ENTER, both results in the preboot screen.

As stated, need to re-install the darwin iso following an update / upgrade, in general the update / upgrades uninstall and re-install Workstation 7, ideally, uninstall the darwin iso before doing the upgrade and then install once the update / upgrade has finished. To maintain control disable automatic tools update in the Edit->Preferences settings, as recommended by Donk in a previous post.

Ubuntu and other directly supported guestOS's will work fine, but OS X needs the extra step to initiate the new signature file.

Thanks. Back up and running. I forget that step...

BTW, have you ever gotten a new manual out?

As I said it isn't strating in the connected state see this line in your VMX file:

ide1:0.startConnected = "FALSE"

needs to be TRUE.

Yes, you are right, this was a mistake but the problem still exists!

Sorry out of answers! Can you attach the vmware.log as a simple file attachment to a post please?

Yes, here you find my vmware.log

No attachment.

Thanks. Back up and running. I forget that step...

Nope - work has been too busy for me, and actually Mac Son of Knife, to re-work it. The trouble is there is now so much information that getting it all pieced together is a big effort. I have started on a new one last weekend, but it is a part time effort.

Sorry, I forgot to press the upload button :)

IDE ATA error reading the ISO. I did see this on my test system, but as at home now can't check until morning UK time. Couple of questions:

1. Is this definitely a vanilla retail DVD image?

2. How was it converted to ISO?

hi. I don't know if it is the right place, but i have a very strange problem with Snow leopard on Vmware 7.1. Until i was using snow leopard 10.6.1, installed with darwin.iso and a ratail dvd, everything was ok. Yesterday i tried to update the os to the version 10.6.3, but after rebooting from the upgrade the grey screen with the apple appeared and after few second it compare the phrase "operating system not found". I tried to reboot many times, but nothing changes.

I don't know if it is a simple thing to solve, but i didn't found a solution. If needed i have windows seven 64 bit with an i5 540m core.

Thanks!

It´s a 10.6.0 Install DVD and I have made the ISO with Toast (Save as Bin/Cue). Is it mot the right way?

What do you mean with "vanilla retail DVD"?

I may be wrong but I think maybe an auto-update from VMware has happened. When installing Workstation use the full installer and then switch off tools downloads as they can overwrite the settings used. In the meantime reinstall the darwin.iso from the command line, as in the manual.

What do you mean with "vanilla retail DVD"? - is it a "modified original" DVD?

Same now with the original DVD in the host, I get an IDE error

If you have a Mac I have always used terminal to do it reliably using the hdiutil command. The DVD has to be a version of Mac OS X that does not come with a machine, as they cannot be used inside VMware. So if it is from an Xserver or iMac it is a no go. You can easily tell, if the DVD is grey then it is a machine specific copy of Mac OS X.

No, it´s a white DVD which I have bought in a store.

I´am not on a mac now, so can you tell me exactly what command you have used?

I tried to install from command line darwin.iso. But the only change is that now it reboot automatically. And I installed Snow leopard after the upgrade of Vmware. I thought Vmware update wasn't the problem .
