Donk
I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. I'm trying to get OS X installed to an ESX 4.0 U1 server. It's a DELL Poweredge T310 with an intel xeon processor. I followed the guide to the T and every time I get the guest OS' "darwin-64" or "darwin10-64" is not a supported OS. I'm looking for soem guidance as to what I'm doing wrong. Thanks, Does not work currently, as is described in the thread. Work is at an advanced stage to make Snow Leopard work but I haven't released it yet as it is under going tests on different machines.

Thanks, If you are trying to install Snow Leopard, currently not supported, so guestOS = "darwin10-64" will not work, although keep an eye on the following topic as work is in progress: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1458945 In terms of Leopard should be fine, as long as you are following the guidelines, i.e. "Retail" copy of OSX and your CPU supports VT-x and it is enabled (some of the T310's, i.e. the X3440 supports VT-x, others NOT), plus you have installed a relevant darwin iso, I would recommend 301, link below: http://rapidshare.com/files/365613323/VMwa...est_Package.zip Hope this helps, MSoK. evensong
Im having an issue with USB in Snow Leopard. For example, when I am trying to format a flash drive as GUID/Apple or restoring a DMG to a flash drive, the data will cut out eventually and the process fails. The exact time where it fails seem very predictable. Anyone have this issue? More importantly, anyone know how I can fix this?
Wachin-Wachon
Update 1: Edited 3 posts into one Update 2: The files can now be found here: http://www.filedropper.com/vmware-darwin-200 http://www.filedropper.com/vmware-darwin-voodoo http://www.filedropper.com/darwin-wks7 (Workstation 7 and Snow Leopard support) Update 2: Would everyone make sure they add or change lines in VMX to this. It solves quite a few problems: monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware" monitor.virtual_mmu = "software" So after months of testing here is a new version of the package to run retail Mac OS X in VMware. This release supports the following products: VMware Workstation 6.5 (Windows & Linux) VMware Player 2.5 (Windows & Linux) VMware Server 2.0 (Windows & Linux) VMware Fusion 2.0 (Mac OS X) VMware ESX 4.0 VMware ESXi 4.0 It is compatible with the other methods that have been previously described in the forums. I have attached the manual to the post. Problem Resolution To help me understand some of the issues that are being seen can I ask everyone who has a problem to post the following information please when first logging the problem: VMware product and version being used Host operating system Host CPU Vanilla Leopard or other distro Version of Leopard 10.5.6, 10.5.7 etc. Please attach the VMX file Please attach the latest vmware.log file (Please remember I have stated that I do not support anything other than vanilla with this method.) For manual clarifications and additional updates from testing; e.g. ESX configuration please use your judgement as to whether to post this information. Also remember I do this in my spare time, and have full time job, family and other interests, so I will answer when I can. Experimental Package for Core 2 Quad and Core i7 Various issues have been raised with these processors. I have put together an experimental update to the package which uses the Voodoo 2 alpha 3 kernel. If you are having issues then please try the changes. If you are not experiencing any problems do not use this package until such time as it is rolled into the main one. If you have a non-Core processor but that is VT-x enabled such as P4D, then this may also be useful to you. If you do try it then read the manual and the update PDFs thoroughly before starting. ========================================================= Hi Guys: I'm trying to install OSX 10.5 on a ESX(i) 4.0 with no luck; I have tried almost every option, latest was to execute the voodoo alpha3 kernel; i'm attaching the PANIC screen from the installation... I have: 8GB RAM Intel 2 Quad Core 8600 Intel Mother IDG451I VT Support Enabled from BIOS (actually I have several Win2k3 running on 64bits) this is the error: and:

If you are upgrading please make sure you do the following: 1. Uninstall the Darwin package first. 2. Install the full version of the Workstation product so all tools ISO images and signatures are installed. 3. Disable automatic tools update in the Edit-> Preferences settings IF you don't it could remove the mods made to run Mac OS X.
imperialdub
Hello everyone, First post here. I found this thread through google cause I'm trying to run Mac OS under a virtual environment. I'm studying Mac applications development and my laptop does not support virtualization. I was literally hours away from dropping $1700 on a new Macbook Pro but I rather not! I am willing to buy a new laptop, preferably running Windows and a supported intel processor. Suggestions? If there are any mac dev's reading this, are there any pros or cons developing mac applications under a virtual Mac OS? Thanks everyone!

I am willing to buy a new laptop, preferably running Windows and a supported intel processor. Suggestions? If there are any mac dev's reading this, are there any pros or cons developing mac applications under a virtual Mac OS? Thanks everyone! Although you can run OS X virtually on a PC without VT support, see Zenith432's Snow Kitty topic, link below: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1288448 But it is much easier to get a PC/Laptop with a VT-x CPU which can be BIOS enabled, a few disable the function in BIOS so do your research, then this topic and Donk's excellent installation guide, or the new version that is being worked on by Donk and myself will allow you to run Snow Leopard under Windows 7 using VMware Workstation 7.0.1 or the very new 7.1 or the free Player 3.0.1 or 3.1. You will also need a "retail" copy of SL from Apple $30.00. Please find below a link to the current latest darwin iso (301) plus the guide, link below: http://rapidshare.com/files/365613323/VMwa...est_Package.zip In terms of using as a development platform, many InsanelyMac users are doing exactly that, so hopefully it will meet your requirements. Hope this helps, MSoK.
Donk
I am hoping to get a new test darwin.iso out today or tomorrow. My laptop had a problem and it had the beta version on it. I am hoping to get it working again today, and then post. The new darwin.iso is a beta test for all VMware products: Workstation 7.0/7.1 Player 3.0/3.1 ESX(i) 4.0/4.0U1 Fusion 3.0/3.1 - (removes check for Server version only) It replaces the VMware built loader with Chameleon 2 RC 4 with some VMware specific changes. It has a built-in (thanks Meklort) kernel patcher which removes the LAPIC panic when run on ESXi. Fusion 3.1 tools are included as are the latest Zentih432 drivers (thanks Zenith432). It is marked as beta purely because it has not been tested on a great deal of different machines yet. I hope that it will remove issues with Core 2 Quad processors which have been giving some of us problems for sometime. Donk

Donk
How is the performance under ESXi? Very good for me, ran non-stop for 7 days without problems, but of course no QE/CI, sound etc. Using a Dell Optiplex 755 as a test box.

Donk
Is it a good idea to install the VMware SVGA II display adapter driver, or is that irrelevant to the ESXi install performance? The VMware supplied tools re useless in ESXi but the Zenith432 driver does allow different screen resolutions to be picked. He has said I can distribute it on the iso image so will be doing that. I haven't had any time to update documents that go with it, but will attempt to start updating them in the coming weeks, work permitting.

Hey Donk: Let me know when/where you post the updated chamaleon darwin.iso, I have the Core 2 Quad who make noise in ESXi U4, currently i need to boot using LEGACY_KERNEL to avoid the APIC panic... Let me know and i will be the "Lab Rat" hehe UPDATE1: Donk, where i can get the Zenith432 Video drivers for SL? my video and mouse under ESXi are really slow... the main cause could be im booting with Legacy kernel??? Thanks!!! Fede

This project keeps getting better and better. First the templates, then diy installation, now full Chameleon support! This will also enable an alternate kernel to be loaded! I can't wait! Donk
Please Donk we are pretty anxious...!!! As I explained it was on my laptop which I was having problems with when it was booting. Unfortunately it looks like the problem is McAfee and need someone in IT to sort it out tomorrow. (Hate the Enterprise version of McAfee, as sometimes can screw your PC up and locked down so you can't fix it.) The guy who does IT in my office is very good, and actually used to work for me, so fingers crossed fixed up first thing tomorrow morning, when I am back in the office. Sorry to everyone for the delay!

"Operating System not Found".... Was this a boo-boo to install? Ubuntu and the rest work fine. As stated, need to re-install the darwin iso following an update / upgrade, in general the update / upgrades uninstall and re-install Workstation 7, ideally, uninstall the darwin iso before doing the upgrade and then install once the update / upgrade has finished. To maintain control disable automatic tools update in the Edit->Preferences settings, as recommended by Donk in a previous post. Ubuntu and other directly supported guestOS's will work fine, but OS X needs the extra step to initiate the new signature file.
