Just out of curiosity, would SL benefit from configuring the guest with more than one processor, or from multiple cores per processor? My host runs a quad core processor (i7-820QM) and I am wondering if I could take advantage of that. Has anyone experimented with this?

I am running SL on WS 7.1

I have tried both, although I think if your Host only has one processor, I would allocate multiple cores rather than multiple processors, even though the processors in VM are virtual. In truth unless your guestOS or application are processor or core aware you are unlikely to see any significant benefit. The allocation of processors in VM is adding a share of the physical resource, so the more processors you add the higher the share, but this is when you are running mutiple VM's in a production environment.

So I guess I am saying add a second core or processor, if your applications runs better great, but I have not seen any significant advantage, unless others have a different experience!

Cheers,

MSoK.

You need to follow the manual, you have not installed the darwin.iso from my tools. Anything else will not work.

Any Distro I try I get the same error and kernel panic. I`m on ESXi 4 and the kernel panic before the panic has PS2Keyboard or mouse error. Please help

Are you trying Snow Leopard? If you are it does not work on ESXi and no solution at present due to ESXi virtual hardware no being at the same level as Workstation 7, Player 3 and Fusion 3.

i have used http://www.filedropper.com/darwin-wks7 (Workstation 7 and Snow Leopard support)

for darwin.iso other files is requested??

i have read this instruction

If the order went exactly like you say, then that might very well be the key.

What I did for a working install was

1. Unzip Darwin-200

2. Unzip Darwin-Snowy _over_ darwin-200

3. _Then_ run seutp.cmd install

4. Then finish config VMX and install OS

i launch vm with darwin.iso

i press f8

i choose "e"

i change cd/dvd for my dvd mac os 10.6

i press "c"

Assuming you have a "Retail" version of Snow Leopard in either DVD or ISO, then modify your VMX file as detailed below and have the "Retail" DVD or ISO mounted at boot.

guestOS = "darwin10-64" or "darwin-10"

ich7m.present = "TRUE"

keyboard.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

mouse.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

monitor.virtual_mmu = "software"

smc.present = "FALSE"

Hope this helps.

No not retail, and any other distro i try I get same iPC etc ....

OK so if you read the main topic this is for retail DVD only. I can't and don't support "distros" as they have too many unknowns.

it's ok thank donk and mac son of knife

I explain my approach to all

Vmware-7.0and a laptop

3-i install package "setup.cmd install"

4-I activate vmware

5-I created a virtual machine freebsd

guest os = "10-64"

6 - I activate my freesbsd i press "f8"

Be Careful

Bottom right-in cd / dvd option of vmware press "disconnect" and "ok"

-Press "setting" and mount dmg gold iso image

Press "connect" to cd / dvd option

7-g and press Ctrl + "c"

8 - press "F8" for mode option "-v" or other

Well you were right, I was able to install retail 10.5 and updated it all the way to 10.5.8 and install server and go the same route. Thank you very much for your hard work !

I wish I can run 10.6 server as that what I really need on this ESXi server, what is so different about virtual hardware that doesnt work? Would update 1 to ESXi solve the hardware limitations ?

No you will probably need to wait until ESX 5 fr the virtual hardware chassis to come up to the same level of support as the current hosted products. There may be workarounds but currently I haven't found one.

I have been wondering if via Zenith432's Snow Kitty topic which can make SL run under Workstation 6.5, which like ESXi does not have the relevant level of software, it should be possible to get SL running under ESXi? I have just replaced my ESXi machine with a Workstation with Dual Xeon CPU's and full VT-x support, so going to give it a go, will start a new topic if I make any progress.

Donk,

Am I missing something in my response to yozh, or is my supposition correct, i.e. ESXi and Workstation 6.5 are at an equivalent level, and in theory I should be able to use Zenith432's Snow Kitty topic instructions to install SL on ESXi, or even better modify a running SL based on your topic and latest darwin.iso, or maybe even the new one you have been talking about based on a new bootloader?

I was reading the other thread, and before I start doing the steps posted (the vmware-darwin-snowy.zip cant be downloaded) has any one tried it and does it work on ESXi 4 ? or am I going to waste my time and SL just doesnt work on ESXi 4 period ?

The answer to the question is you may well be waisting your time, but I am going to give it a try, so I will start a new topic on the subject, as I think there might be quite a lot of interest in the forum. On the darwin-snowy front use the more recent darwin-301.zip, this includes all the relevant files so you do not need the darwin--200 zip file, link below:

http://rapidshare.com/files/365613323/VMwa...est_Package.zip

This is unless Donk knows better in terms of code limitiations within ESXi 4u1?

The link to the new topic "Attempting to run Snow Leopard under ESXi 4(u1), This might be one step too far!" is posted below:

Sharing a successful story here!

I installed VMWare 7 on Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio VGN-FW270AE laptop. It has 3GB RAM, 300GB HD, CPU Intel Core2 DUO 2.26GHz, DVD-DW/BluRay-R and 1080p Full HD screen.

I thought this could be more than sufficient to run Windows AND another OS, say, MAC OS X.

After reading so many posts and tried so many ways, I finally could manage to install MAC OS X 10.6.3 on a VM.

This is what it toke to me:

First, make shure you have put all this together:

-WINDOWS 7 (remember to disable all the Power Saving options so the computer will not be shut down neither put to sleep while the instalation takes place on the VM)

-VMWARE Workstation 7

-A Sony Vaio LapTop with its BIOS updated and the Intel VT support on

-A retail DVD of the Snow Leopard 10.6.3

-A Time Machine backup on a Pen Drive or disk image (this procedure will not work without this!)

Then you can proceed to the following steps:

1-download the files from the first page of this forum (save your time: http://www.filedropper.com/darwin-wks7)

2-Unzip everything to a new dir

3-Open the VMX on VMWare7, change the Processor to 1 CPU and 1 Core (less is more!) and change the Virtualization Engine to "Intel VT-x or AMD-V"

4-Follow the instructions to install the MAC-OS X. At some point you will get a message telling that "Mac OS X can not be installed on this HD" and two options: Restar or Restore

5-choose RESTORE and then plug the pen drive with the Time Machine backup as the origin and the virtual HD as the destination

6-Switch to full screen mode and proceed with restoration. If it fails on the first time, shut the VM down and defrag the VM's virtual disk, then try again

7-after the backup has been restored you should be able to run it by shuting the VM down, changing the CD for the image Darwin.iso and then starting the machine up again.

See the screen capture for the VM running on a Vaio and Win7 as the host.
