Probably much simpler to install Zenith432's excellent audio drivers link below:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/

Thank you for that terrific tip but I downloaded the EnsoniqAudioPCI_1.0.2_for_Leopard audio drivers, installed them, but OS X is still complaining that I have "No Built-In Audio." My ESXi host is a Dell Inspiron 530 with onboard RealTek audio. Maybe that's the problem.

Even with the Ensoniq driver loaded you still get the "No Built-In Audio", you have to access it via utilities>Audio MIDI Setup>Audio Devices and select AC97 Audio (PCM) across the board, you can amend the format if you are still having issues.

Hope this helps!

well, after lots of fussing I had a simple problem... i forgot to replace the darwin.iso with the one for win 7. everything is back to running smooth.

Glad you got sorted, the not re-installing of the darwin.iso, is a common fault, and it must be re-installed not just copied as it creates the .sig files which are specfic.

Cheers, MSoK!

When I go to Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup>Audio Devices, this is what I see. Clicking the drop-down doesn't give me any other options.

Works fine under Workstation 7 or Player 3, but not had a chance to test under ESXi. ESXi has a very limited supported hardware list, and there is a lot of discussion in the forums regarding adding support for Realtek NIC's, so quite possible the audio side is not supported, hence the Ensoniq OS X audio driver has nothing to map through too.

Will do some further investigation, unless someone else has had any experience?

Sorry MSoK!

Hi again, seamsters of the VMware thread. I've run into a new obstacle perhaps someone can help with. I'd like to add Logic Studio to the Workstation 7.01 installation on my Dell D630. When I run the installer I get an alert with two prongs before the installer quits. It informs me that (1) I need a machine that can run Quartz Extreme (which, as far as I know, the Dell already does) and (2) an install requires 64MB of vram, whereas Snow Leopard on the Dell has zero (according to the installer, though the Nvidia card on the Dell has 128MB). I've looked for vram settings within Workstation without locating the element I need to tweak. Might the setting be fixable through the preference file from the first page of the thread?

If anyone else here has installed and run Logic inside VMware and has advice about settings and tripwires to be aware of, please chime in.

As far as I am aware QE is a non starter currently under VM, no driver support from VM and although it is mapped out in the spec, even Zenith432's drivers are not going to solve that issue.

In terms of your Nvidia card, it has no relevance in terms of what is running in a VM, the VM graphics driver is purely virtual and has no direct path to your physical graphics card.

Please all feel free to correct me on this? MSoK!

Hello Donk

I use ESXi 4.0 at PowerElite 4850 server.

I am going to set(or install) Apple OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard Server (Retail install disc) on it.

But After booting up with Darwin, Grey Apple logo is shown up then GuestOS gets rebooted.

If I let it be, GuestOS will do this repeatly.

GuestOS are Darwin (arch=i386), Darwin-64. I do know it doesn't work, but I tried from Darwin10 to Darwin10-64.

and also tried with OSX 10.5.6 Leopard (Retail install disc) on Darwin, but the same.

PowerElite 2580 Spec is

CPU : intel Xeon 2.8 Dual CPU

RAM : 2048MB

HDD : SCSI 500GB

O/S : VMWare ESXi 4.0

GuestOS Setting

Memory : 1024MB

CPUs : 2

VMCI Device Restricted

Floppy Drive 1 : Client Device

CD/DVD Drive 1 : Host Device

SCSI Controller 0 : LSI Logic Parallel

Hard disk 1 : Virtual Disk

Plz help me.. :(

Update 1: Edited 3 posts into one

Update 2: The files can now be found here:

http://www.filedropper.com/vmware-darwin-200

http://www.filedropper.com/vmware-darwin-voodoo

http://www.filedropper.com/darwin-wks7 (Workstation 7 and Snow Leopard support)

Update 2: Would everyone make sure they add or change lines in VMX to this. It solves quite a few problems:

monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

monitor.virtual_mmu = "software"

So after months of testing here is a new version of the package to run retail Mac OS X in VMware. This release supports the following products:

  • VMware Workstation 6.5 (Windows & Linux)
  • VMware Player 2.5 (Windows & Linux)
  • VMware Server 2.0 (Windows & Linux)
  • VMware Fusion 2.0 (Mac OS X)
  • VMware ESX 4.0
  • VMware ESXi 4.0

It is compatible with the other methods that have been previously described in the forums. I have attached the manual to the post.

Problem Resolution

To help me understand some of the issues that are being seen can I ask everyone who has a problem to post the following information please when first logging the problem:

  • VMware product and version being used
  • Host operating system
  • Host CPU
  • Vanilla Leopard or other distro
  • Version of Leopard 10.5.6, 10.5.7 etc.
  • Please attach the VMX file
  • Please attach the latest vmware.log file

(Please remember I have stated that I do not support anything other than vanilla with this method.)

For manual clarifications and additional updates from testing; e.g. ESX configuration please use your judgement as to whether to post this information. Also remember I do this in my spare time, and have full time job, family and other interests, so I will answer when I can.

Experimental Package for Core 2 Quad and Core i7

Various issues have been raised with these processors. I have put together an experimental update to the package which uses the Voodoo 2 alpha 3 kernel. If you are having issues then please try the changes. If you are not experiencing any problems do not use this package until such time as it is rolled into the main one. If you have a non-Core processor but that is VT-x enabled such as P4D, then this may also be useful to you.

If you do try it then read the manual and the update PDFs thoroughly before starting.

SL will not work under ESXi 4.0 using a vanilla kernel, you need to try one of the other methods as in Zenith432's Snow Kitty topic. Not sure why you are having a problem with leopard should be fine, plenty of use have got it working, and Donk's manual at the begining of this topic should be good for ESXi, just need to remember that the console is unsupported in ESXi so you need to do an ALT F11 and type unsupported on the blank screen which will bring up the username which should be root followed by the password, you are then in the console and can add the darwin.iso as per the manual.

Also you are very low on memory on your ESXi box, i.e. bare minimum, but this should not be the cause of your problem.

Hi guys,

Has anyone tried below installation?

http://www.online-tech-tips.com/mac-os-x/i...-leopard-on-pc/

and/or

http://mahmood1.com/Windows_Mac_Google_OS_...ualisation.aspx

It worked for me, except I get "The CPU has been disabled by OS ...." every time I shut down the OS (SL 10.6)

same after update to 10.6.2.

The content of system does not seems to be affected by it.

I have VMware work station 7.0.1, CPU E6600 vt enabled, and the host os is win7 x64

any comments?

thanks

Vasilii

Neither of the installation methods are supported in this topic, if your CPU is VT-x enabled, then get hold of a retail copy of OS X L or SL, and follow the manual at the start of this topic, and you should then not get the disabled CPU errors. This topic is specifically for a vanilla kernel installed from a retail DVD or ISO on an Intel CPU with VT-x enabled.

G'day,

I'm having an issue installing VMWare Tools (from darwin.iso). After I install and reboot, Finder no longer works so I can no longer start applications, other than those along the bottom. Clicking Finder does nothing but all the other applets along the bottom load up. Other than the Finder problem, it appears the install went fine as I have resolution choices.

Is there anything I can do to get it working? Note that I took a snapshot before installing VMWare Tools so I can easily revert.

Vanilla Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Installed as 10.5.1 and upgraded to 10.5.8 in one go).

Note that I did try installing VMWare Tools before the update to 10.5.8 and had the same problem.

Thanks

I manage to upload the 2 files by renaming them to text files.

ATJ,

Not seen this problem, but a couple of things to try, first add the following to your VMX file, otherwise it looks fine:

monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

monitor.virtual_mmu = "software"

Secondly go back to your pre darwin.iso installed situation, and re-install the latest version of the darwin.iso, vmware-darwin-200 updated with the darwin.iso from the wks7 zip.

Hope this helps!

Excellent! I added the 2 lines to VMX file and used the darwin.iso from wks7.zip and it now works fine.

Thanks.

From updates to the first post it appears this method will work with Snow Leopard. Is that true? If I buy a copy of the Snow Leopard box I should be able to install a SL VM?

Andrew,

Yes, you are correct, the methods with a couple of tweaks should work fine for a retail copy of Snow Leopard, Donk's manual at the beginning of this topic, plus have a look at my post earlier in this topic:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1420442

Hopefully, it should be straight forward to get SL up and running, plenty of us have acheived it multiple times, good luck!

Tezuka,

Sorry I did not reply to your earlier post, I was going to delete my VMX and run through the re-install process, but work got in the way! In terms of creating a fresh install, follow the procedure at the start of this topic, but install to a new directory, create the VMDK Hard Drive with the same name as the one you already have, as if you get to the point where you are going to install OS X from the DVD or ISO, you may even want to let the install run through before re-naming the Hard Drive (VMDK) in the new location, and copy in the one that was running, hopefully it will just work! But as mentioned I have not had a chance to test this, so make sure you have copies of everything.

Hope this helps!

i create a new vmx, tried to load it with vmdonk.iso which i dowloaded from this forum but i cant seem to find the post again...anyway the same problem occur....

This is what i did, the 1st time i install:

1)open .vmx file

2)select vmdonk.iso

3)will get prompt to select install os from where

(This step doesn't show up now.)

4)i disconnect vmdonk.iso selected leopard.iso, connected back

5)installation start.

6)once done, reload

7)selected vmdonk.iso everytime i start leopard

Not sure what is wrong with the link, but please find below a link to Donk's excellent manual, as originally posted in this topic:

What is this vmdonk.iso, not anything I have seen in this topic, I thought from your earlier posts you were running a retail copy of OS X with the darwin.iso from a combination of the vmware-darwin-200 and darwin-wks7 zip files, with VT-x enabled. If this is the case the standard manual in the 200 zip should work fine, or the one I have just posted. If this is not the case, then we may need to re-think our approach.

I have been trying for hours with no success. I followed everything in the manual and tried all the darwin.iso files I could find (vmware-darwin-200, darwin-wks7, darwin-voodoo, donk's darwin.iso).

They all have the same problem. As soon as I tell it to boot, it kernel panics with an APIC error.

Has anyone been able to successfully use this method to install Snow Leopard SERVER on ESXi 4 Update1 ?

Nope ESX 4 cannot use SL with this method. You can try this http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=189969
