VMware Mac OS X Guest Package for ESX, Workstation, Player, Server and Fusion

Hi,

 

I've created a MacOS 10.6 VM using Fusion 3.0.2 and it works fine on my Mac. So, I want to take that VM to my Windows box at work and run it using VMWare Player. When I tried to open it using an unmodified install of VMWare Player, I get an error about "no operating system found on disk".

 

Should this be possible? I've seen a few references to being to run MacOS 10.6 using VMWare Player but nothing concrete as far as a guide goes. I assume I'd need to follow the same instructions posted in this thread plus maybe some additional modifications to the .vmx file for my VM?

Andy, I have not tried to copy a VM from Fusion to player, but have done plenty between PC's. You need to install the darwin.iso in to your Player 3 under Windows, download the darwin-200 zip file and expand to a directory, then replace the darwin.iso with the one from the wks7 zip file, finally at a command prompt go to the directory where you put the darwin.iso and run the "setup.cmd install" command this will install the darwin.iso, signatures etc. in to your Player 3. You will need to modify your .vmx file to include the following:

 

guestOS = "darwin10-64"

ich7m.present = "TRUE"

keyboard.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

mouse.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

monitor.virtual_mmu = "software"

smc.present = "FALSE"

 

This is assuming you have VT-x enabled in BIOS, etc. see the first post in this topic for further details.

P.S. May be worth posting a copy of your current .vmx file so we can compare to a running windows version, not sure if there may be different content under fusion.

I guess I'll use my Fusion 2.x hackintosh to create virtual machines and use another hackintosh to run the virtual machines in Fusion 3.x.

Thanks. That did help. After installing the additional files all I had to do was change smc.present to "FALSE" and everything booted up fine. I haven't had time to play around with it much but it seems OK. The Original Fusion generated .vmx is attached if you are interested.

This topic is only for Vanilla configurations, so we do not support iDeneb here. But if you have the retail DVD of L or SL then we should be able to get that up and running. Although your CPU is stated as supporting VT-x is it enabled in BIOS?

A little confused as to what you are trying to acheive, SL Server is supported directly by Fusion 3, and SL client is supported if you install Donk's darwin.iso, see first post in this topic. What are you trying to do on the PC side, as the VM will transfer, see my post to SpazTheCat, provided your PC has the relevant spec.

If you look back in this topic you will see, SL is working fine with VM Workstation 7, and the manual and tools in the first post on this topic work fine for SL under W7. Check the spec requirements for your PC, i.e. VT-x enabled in BIOS etc.

If all is well use the manual to create your guestOS as FreeBSD-64, install the darwin.iso tools in to your VM W7 instance via the darwin 200 zip file updated with the wks7 zip. Fire up your VM once then shutdown and amended .vmx settings. Need a retail version of SL on DVD or .iso, can be purchased from Apple £25, €29, $35 depending on location.

The only time I get this error is when I attempt to install the 10.5.8 Combo Update. It happens at %58 every time. I have run caffeine and turned off all power saving but that didn't help. Thanks a lot Nihilator, running Fusion 3 on a real mac the trick above combined with the darwin-wks7 iso did it for me (changing firmware=efi to firmware=bios, to avoid the error "The guest operating system is not Mac OS X Server").<br /><br />Then I just selected CD/DVD->Use a physical disk drive with the retail DVD and the install of Snow Leopard went fine.<br /><br />(sorry about the html code above. probably due to the use of noscript).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, your processor does not support VT-x and your OS X is not retail, you mention "Xelabo". This topic is specifically for Intel CPU's with VT-x, retail OS X and a vanilla kernel.

Your .vmx confirms you are using a non vanilla kernel, guest OS = "freebsd", mght be worth seeing if you can update the kernel, as often non vanilla kernels have problems with vanilla updates.

Awesome to see this! Excitedly, I gave it a try. I have a Intel Core2Duo E8200 machine running VistaBusiness x64 with VMWare Server 2.0.1 on it. Using the VMware-guest64check-6.0.0-45731.exe, it says I'm x64 capable.

 

I installed 10.5.6 on a 20GB partition (note: I had to make Disk Utility use a Guid Partition Table instead of the default) and it looked like it was working.

 

It starts up and sits at the startup screen with the Apple icon with the spinner animating, but that's it.

 

What should I do to debug?

 

(also, how do I emulate the command-v on startup to get a verbose boot?)

Just a note for those trying this with ESXi 4 you will always get the dreaded "darwinGuest is not supported" error if trying to start the vm from vCenter 4. I was going crazy trying to get this to work until I decided to try it directly on the ESXi server versus vCenter. I no longer get that error...

Good point. We had a discussion somewhere in the thread but so big now seems to have gotten lost. I can't fix it as it is somewhere in the vCenter agent on the ESXi host.

Quick question, is compatibility still limited to 10.5 on ESXi or has this changed over the last few months since the manual was originally written? OK, slight confusion, you mention in the text Leopard (10.5.6), but in your .vmx Snow Leopard (10.6)

 

In terms of your CPU, need to check if it is VT-x enabled, as one varient of the processor (SPEC Code: SLGTK) does support VT-x the other (SPEC Code: SLB9V) does not. If unsure run securable link below to check:

If OK, then ensure it is enabled in BIOS.

Next need to confirm your L or SL is a "retail" copy either DVD or ISO?

 

Assuming all is OK, and you have installed the darwin.iso from darwin-200 zip updated with wks7, then need to make a couple of changes to your .vmx and hopefully you will be able to progress.

 

For Snow Leopard change the following:

guestOS = "darwin10-64" or "darwin10" for 32-bit

I've noticed that i can no longer boot the vm's, but those that were suspended work ok, i just can't reboot. Is there any known solution here? I'm using i7, asus pgt deluxe v2 with RAID 0 setup now on win 7.

I am guessing you have reinstalled the OS etc, and reinstalled VM Workstation 7, since the VM's use a completely virtual HD driver, it should only be you need to reinstall the darwin tools, that is assuming you are using the vanilla kernel, with retail OS X.

hello, running SnowLeopard on vmware 701, host is win-x64, vmsvga122 drivers + ensoniq 102 drivers installed.

 

I am having a small issue with (video driver?) where when I connect via Apple Remote Desktop to another mac, the remote cursor appears as a large black square. I think it is 32x32 px.

 

I captured a screenshot with my iphone's camera so you can see:

 

the reason i didn't do a "normal" screenshot: whenever i try to capture the screen using my screen cap utility, the black box disappears! it goes away when vmware is not the 'active' application, and it returns as soon as it gets focus again. very weird.

 

anyone know whats causing this, is there some setting i can try in my .vmx file to fix it?

Out of interest, has anyone tried unity with this? In case it's been mentioned, I've tried using the search topic function and it didn't come up with anything.

I think you might be having problem because of drivers, and I don't think it's possible to avoid it if you connect directly with Apple Remote Desktop. Try other VNC clients, I think you might get better results but most importantly, VMware Workstation has builtin VNC settings and ports. Try to connect to them (i cant remember where, I think somwhere in virtual machine settings inside workstation you get that options).
