Right, still haven't got the internet working correctly...

I'm on a Windows 7 laptop using WiFi to connect to the internet. I have Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installed under VMware Server 2.5? or 2.0? Whatever the current latest is.

I can load up the Remote Console and boot up the Mac just fine. I'll need to sort the sound out and graphics drivers later on but I don't really need them for what I'll be using the Mac for. I'd need the internet to work though, so I can get the software updates...

On network diagnostics on the Mac, it's all green, everything seems to be ok. On the network application, I can ping sites, run trace route, grab whois information etc. - although it takes awhile... however with Safari, no sites load. It times out for everything. Same for the software updates. I'm not sure if everything is setup right, maybe I'll need to try connecting via Ethernet on my laptop instead of WiFi, but I have full signal as the router is just downstairs.

Anyway I've attached my vmx file and my last log file. Any help will be much appreciated!

Ok, I got everything up and working again after installing another fresh copy of OS X using just a vanilla Free-BSD 32 bit and not 64-bit.

Quick question, is there a good way to map the apple keys to the keyboard accordingly or does someone know how the keys map over to Mac?

Ok, I am learning as I go here...so it looks like the following is true regarding key mappings -

Windows key = COMMAND key

Alt key = Apple key

Hi all,

does this work with SL64 and Win7x64+VM7?

I get a forever "Loading DVD..." message and nothing.

I can make an older 10.5.x install/work easily/quickly. So I guess I'm good on settings/vmx.

But not SL...

Also, I have the ich7m.present = "TRUE" in my .vmx file. My Alienware m15x has the ich8 chipset, I am not currently experiencing any issue with having the ich7m.present = "TRUE" in my .vmx file...but should I be using something else instead?

One last thing, I am running the darwin10-64 (64bit) OS, so I am wondering are those Ensoniq and AC97 drivers for the 32-bit OS only?

Don't worry about the fact that the host specs are different from what is in the guest. VMware has a guest "chassis" which is emulated (not virtualized) and ICH7M is for the virtual motherboard.

Hi Donk,

all good, SL64 and L64 running side by side on Q4-9400 @ 2.66Ghz.

One little thing, both vms show the processor at 4,30Ghz.

L64 uses 2 procs with 1 core : shows at 2x 4,30 Ghz

SL64 uses 1 proc with 2 cores shows at 1x 4,30 Ghz.

Actually it's not a big deal, just curious.

I'm trying to get SL up on Workstation 7 on an XP Box. I believe I have made all the necessary mods to the vmx file (attached), verified that the CPU is supported, and I am using a retail CD (Mac OS X v10.6 Retail). I have used the VMWare-Darwin-200 zip file, and replaced the darwin.iso with the one from darwin-wks7.

When I boot the VM, I get the Gray background with the apple logo, but nothing else happens. If I run under -v mode, I get the following error consistently:

BootCacheControl: could not unlink playlist /var/db/BootCache.playlist: Read-only file system

Bug: launchctl.c:2325 (23930):30: (dbfd = open(g_job_overrides_db_path, blah)

AppleATADiskQueueManager: setPowerState(0x32d1400, 2 -> 1) timed out after 100180 ms

I have never installed OsX before, so I'm afraid my troubleshooting skills are nil. Has anyone seen this error before, or have any idea where to go from here?

I concur on this. Tried IDE and got consistent messages about CPUx at speed XXXXX being disabled during the bootstrap of OS X.

Try adding this to your VMX file:

ethernet0.connectionType = "nat"

Added that to my VMX but still timing out and not loading Safari/Software Update.

Also tried with the laptop plugged into Ethernet and WiFi off, but still didn't work <_<

As you can see, Network Diagnostics is all green, but Safari times out for websites (tried google on the 2nd tab).

Do you have a firewall running on the host? If you are running have you allowed VMware access to the internet?

Also post the output:

Trend Micro was pre-installed with the laptop, I'll need to uninstall it soon and put something else in, but I don't think it's that, since I have Ubuntu x64 setup as another guest host and the internet works fine for that.

I just noticed on the VMware Web Access site that it shows my Mac install as "Other (32 bit)" - but I selected 64 bit when I installed the Free-BSD guest host...

I used the darwin.iso attached in your first post (not the Workstation 7 one), and installed VM Tools on the Mac. I copied the ifconfig -a output from the terminal, but it doesn't copy over to the host OS, unless it has to be done some other/special way?

Another success story .. I managed to install SL 10.6.2 on WS 7 using Win XP 32bit laptop (HP 6730b).

I used UniversalOSX v3.6 and unchecked all options except the retail 10.6 package.

works like a charm ... you are the man Donk!

Hi Donk,

just to make sure, the CPU frequency is not right: does it matter, can it be fixed?

Also, is there a way to put a timeout and allow for boot disk selection?

I use Snow64 and Leo64 side by side on the same disk (actually ISCSI in WIN7) and I'd like to be able to have some seconds to choose which OS to boot the VM with.

I understand it is in darwin.iso, but can this be changed? Somehow?

Thank you Donk, for an excellent piece of work! I came here after trying the useless instructions in the pages linked to from the lifehacker post - I won't bother with the link, but it was referred to a while back in this thread.

One retail copy of SL from amazon (20 quid - a bargain), a couple of hours of messing about trying to get everything to work (all my own mistakes, once I'd finally updated the darwin 200 package with the wks7 iso), it all worked fine.

I installed the tools and I have a resolution that autoresizes when I go full screen, and shared folders works straight away. All I need to do is get the sound working, and I'm done.

Thanks very much for giving us people who want to own a mac but can't afford it, a chance to experience Mac OSX!

Retail SL DVD

HP 6730b laptop w/ 2GB RAM.

Any thoughts on why Snow Leopard can't run on ESX4? Is the issue that we have to wait for Fusion to support Snow Leopard so we can get the updated darwin.iso with the new version of VMware Tools for the Mac?

I got 10.6 up and running in Workstation 7 (darwin10-64) thanks to all this great info. Only issue I had was that when mounting the dmg image in vmware it would give me ebios 0x31 errors. I finally converted the dmg to iso and installed without a problem. I have an intel quad core but have not had any reason to use the voodoo package yet.

I have a few issues/questions:

1) I installed Zenith432's package (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/, 1.2.2) - This seems to have helped the graphics performance and I can freely change the resolution (did not try this before the install though)... but the problem is I still have no sound. If I go into System Utilites > Sound there are no devices listed. Any ideas? Do I need to change the VMs settings?

2) I would like to have Copy & Paste and Shared Folders between the VM and Windows. I see in the manual it says to install the Fusion tools.

2a) Manual says the tools are supplied with the darwin.iso, how do i install them? If i hit the install tools in VMware, it says "Could not find component on update server".

2b) Why are they version 2.0.5? There is a version 3, isnt there? Can I install those, is it better?

The virtual hardware is not quite the same:

ESX 4/Workstation 6.5/Player 2.5/Server 2.0/Fusion 2.0 - are all the same

Workstation 7.0/Player 3.0/Fusion 3.0 - are all the same

There are optimizations and new features; e.g. ICH7M HPET added to the newer products, which likely won't be available until ESX 5. (ESX always is the most conservative in moving forward in the virtual hardware).

Zenith432's post on SL on Wks 6.5.3 would probably work for ESX 4 but is not a vanilla install as uses a modified kernel.

It's funny - that very guide just doesn't work properly, and is what sent me here in the first place. As a result, I have a working, customised SL install that is a hell of a lot more reliable than the mess that is represented in the ripoff guides posted elsewhere.

Props to Donk and Zenith - your stuff works, but takes a little bit of work, which is why these 'quick and simple' ripoff guides will always exist.

P.S. I'm posting this from the SL image that I now use every day.

I will work on a new guide when I have time, but I am having a Christmas vacation and I have promised a paper for VMware on something else. Also work was pretty hectic before the vacation and hence no progress. The next step will be to show how to setup using darwin.iso and then switch to using EFI BIOS which is much closer to what VMware Fusion uses. I am not sure however the best way to deliver this due to the need to ship a modified VMware EFI BIOS or a simple tool to extract and fix it up. Also need to talk to Zenith432 to see if I could bundle his work onto the darwin.iso, plus find a simple way to fool VMware into thinking it can be installed via the tools menu.
