DVD Burner May Be Cause of Insomnia

 

It has been reported by Master Chief that (i) his DVD drive starts to make funny noises when the machine should be going to sleep and (ii) that this madness can be stopped by simply putting DVD into he drive.

 

I found unplugging the drive also did the trick, but that's kind of inconvenient.

 

Since I wanted to get rid of my crappy TSST (Samsung Toshiba Storage Technology) SH-223 drive anyway, I thought what the heck, if DSDT cannot fix it, let hardware to it. So I got myself a nice Optiarc AD-7243 dvd drive and replaced the TSST one.

 

'Lo and behold, sleep on idle works now :)

 

However, I cannot spot any difference in System Profiler or IORegistryExplorer between the drives. This leads me to believe it's simply a bug in the drive.

Before you run out and get a new DVD drive, please note that with 10a380, sleep on idle also works properly with the TSST drive.

 

Please report what drive you have and whether or not sleep works.

I have this drive too! I've been pulling my hair out thinking it was my OS X install. I think I may just get a couple new optical drives and fix it that way. However I have upgraded the firmware to SB03 to see if perhaps that'll fix it. I'll post my results.

What if I don't even have a DVD Drive?

I only have 2 Sata HDD's, and I can't get auto sleep to work =/

Sleep works if I induce it myself, and it wakes fine too, actually no. For some reason it kept launching the Bluetooth Setup Assistant after waking lol.

 

EDIT:

I am really surprised that I also have the dvd drive - sleep on idle bug. I didn't think this was possible, seeing as I use a USB/external drive to install (Which does happen to be a Samsung drive!) and I leave it off after the OS is installed. But nevertheless, I tried inserting a DVD (an actual dvd, DVD app pops up telling me it can't find suitable dvd drive), and YES, it did sleep on idle! I'm not sure what I can do to correct this. I mean, the drive is not even connected and it still won't sleep on idle! - I prefer not to have a DVD drive connected to the system through internal SATA, I don't want to dedicate space/power to something I only use for OS installs.

Disabling sleep for hard drives in Energy Saver pref pane works!

Yet Another Edit:

After a reinstall, this time installing from existing install, so no dvd drive was ever used, and I have yet to plug one in for the OS to recognize, Sleep on idle not working. I wonder if connecting the usb one to sort of get it going would work...

I have the SH-223 drive you have (SATA). 10.6 didn't fix this, at least not with my DSDT. The old solution of leaving a disk in the drive works though. We also noticed that changing to a Pioneer drive fixed the issue. Glad you are confirming that the Sony Optiarchs work also.

I have a Samsun SH203 DVD drive and can't reach sleep on idle neither with OSX 10.5.85, nor with 10.6.1. I already noticed, though, that my 10.5.8 install unexpectedly reached sleep on idle after creating a disk image. I just went away, living the image creation going on, and the PC was 'sleeping' when I came back but I couldn't reproduce it anymore.

 

I will retry this: leaving intentionally a disk in my DVD drive and double check.

I will also try 'disabling sleep for hard drives in Energy Saver pref pane' and tell you what the result is.

Too Bad!

I couldn't get the sleep on idle to work even when I unplugged my DVD drive, neither on 10.5.7, nor on 10.6.1. Sleep for hardrive disabled didn't change anything neither :thumbsup_anim:

the same no auto sleep problem with proper dsdt

autosleep works when disconnected or with dvd in the drive

 

Dvd type is TSST SH-S183A

 

already orded the Optiarc AD-7243 drive

but one question does your drive also makes a lot of noise when the tray opens without a disc?

Hi.

My DVD burner is an LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH20NS10.

Auto sleep doesn't work and disabling sleep for hard drive doesn't fix it. With this option enabled looks like the DVD drive is accessed every minute or so (makes noise and LED blinks), but disabling it doesn't fix auto sleep.

Yeah, unfortunately it is noisier. I'll take the lesser of two evils though.

 

"proper dsdt"?

 

Is there an explicit DSDT fix for this?

Oh, WOW. I've been tearing my hair out over this one. Reinstalled several times, waiting ages between each step and couldn't figure out just when the disc noise started happening!! I'm so glad I know what it is now!

 

i have a LiteOn DVD writer. I know, I never heard of them either, dunno how I ended up with it. One minute I was at the counter next minute I was walking out with the box tucked under my arm. I suspect hypnosis.

 

Anyway other than putting a disc in the drive or disconnecting, anyone got a fix for this yet?

Maybe its the "Power off" not being supported that causes this?

 

A real macbook with nvidia chipset has the following (I found it on the internet):

Just to add to the list

 

SAMSUNG TS-H663B/UOAH SATA will not sleep without a disc inserted

 

(I have not tried just disabling HD sleep yet)

 

lite-on DH-20A4H PATA will not properly wake up (goes into an endless loop trying to read the inserted CD)
