I will wait for feedback... :)

I just noticed that there has been 2 ROMs posted on page 1 of this thread. I run both through efirom and the content is the same however the file size (uncompressed) is different. Do you know the difference on the content?

I noticed that they both had its Device ID changed which is good :-)

The second one is the correct one, the first one is a mistake.

Didn't work. I am glad that flashing it back to the original backup ROM worked.

I noticed when I reflashed back that there was a difference when it says:

OLD ... BOARD 850E ... (ROM you provided).

NEW ... BOARD 875E ... (this is the original version).

You should give it a try to see if you find out what is wrong. It was easy to get it back to the original ROM.

hello.

I recently bought a Mac Pro quadcore 2.66GHz Nehalem, Nvidia graphics with a 120. I have read recently that you can install an ATI graphics PC (4870, 4890, etc. ..). I have not even bought the graphic (probably buy a HIS me) but the problem is with the two power cords. Where should be connected to the Mac Pro?

Thanks and regards

You can connect them to the board but the 2 calbe that 4890 have dont fit there, you must buy mini 6pin from ebay or ati pages.

Have you ever tried flashing the card? I want to flash mine.

Has the posted ROM been modified already? What was done to it? I am up for testing but I want to understand what was done to it before I try.

Cheers

Why would you want to flash your card if netkas did such a great job with the modified x2000.kext?

Even on the good hardware mac site www.hardware.com they have noticed his work as you can see here. http://www.hardmac.com/news/2009/05/04/ins...out-flashing-it

With netkas's kext there is no need to flash a 4890 to make it work in a Mac pro.

I am using Netkas way now but there is a problem that you can't see the boot screen. I use bootcamp quite a bit and many times I have to go to the start-up screen to choose the drive I want to boot from. The startup screen doesnt show if the card doesnt have a Mac EFI.

The perfect scenario is for the card to be able to work fully and come-up from the start-up not only after the OS load its drivers.

I will wait for feedback...

Are you planning to try?

Anyone else here with a 4890 and more experience on modifying the ROM? I am willing to test.

I think we should be missing just a minor change.

Here is the test rsults @ 1920*1080, I initially ran it but forgot to tick the Multisample so the results were higher if that makes sense?

Can you post an OpenGLExtensionsViewer Bench (Test Tab) in your full resolution and set Multisamling to 2 (FSSA*2=more GPU work=less an CPU test=better GPU bench) ?

Here the freeware OpenGLInfo/Bench Tool:

http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/download.html

Would be fine to see your highres/fullscreen FPS values with multisampling*2 :D

@ncsa

I'm interested to know what brand card you are using and details like the amount of memory.

This is what I followed ... Thanks to netkas and linathael

Install Radeon HD 48x0 drivers shipping with Mac Pro 2009: http://www.sendspace.com/file/gvsi12

Install extensions allowing recognition of those PC version cards: http://rapidshare.de/files/46982841/ATI_Init.pkg.html

Install patched extension to activate 3D acceleration http://rapidshare.de/files/46893369/accel.tar.bz2.html.

So what is the procedure to get the 4890 working?

I have a XFX 4890 and tried the modified atix2000.kext with no luck as it loads the screen with just garbage.

@NCSA - how did you get it working?

Hi, I'd like to know what you guys mean by installing... I'm new to Mac universe and I'm not certain if i'm doing it right. The Radeon drivers and extensions both come in a pkg that is executed by an installer. Is it really leading the files to the places they are supposed to be?

For the accel I've used KextHelper, so I think this part is ok.

The thing is, my OS X doesn't even get to the entrance screen, it just turns off the monitor, like it has no signal to display!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Edit: I have a Xfx HD 4830, btw

Hi all guys,

I'm reading theese new posts and I'm very happy finally we can run HD48X0 on MAC!

Now my idea is to write down a tutorial for people who want to run single HD4890. I've got one HD4890 and I tried to make it compatible with iDeneb 10.5.7 without any good result.

That's what I did:

1) Installed iDeneb

2) Updated to 10.5.7 (which kernel should I use? I went on voodoo)

3) Installed natit package

4) On reboot system crashes on booting.

I guess I'm missing the ATI2000KEXT file... I've seen netkas has just posted it somewhere and I've just downloaded. Now I'm going to try the kext, but I would like to know if there is something wrong in what I did.

Thank you!

==EDIT==

Also installing the 4 kext provided in accel.rar the system hangs on boot... I got something like "family specific mathcing fails"...

I'm running a HD4890XT from XFX... can anyone help me? Is there anyfile to modify too? info.plist??

==EDIT 2==

I managed to get the HD4890 working on 10.5.6 with success! I used the ATI_hd48x0_pack_10.5.6 + natit + accel.rar and the system seems to be working now... but how to upgrade to 10.5.7?? Please help me!

Did any of you guys managed to get two DVIs monitors connected to the 4890 and working?

I get lotsa blue screens on startup whith the 2DVI Monitors connected, a 26 and a 21.

Under 10.5.7.

Fine with one monitor OSx, fine with dual display on 4890 under XP.

Got the instructions on http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php...106#post7787106

I dont think there is difference between ur files and theirs.

I finally got the 2 HD4890 working perfectly with iDeneb 10.5.6 with 4 DVi full enabled. I guess my video-charts are working with both DVI because they are XFX ones. I've heared XFX graphic cards fully support multiple monitors in OSX, and it's the trhuth!

I have an XFX HD4890 too and it's crashing every time I plug the second DVI Monitor in. Which steps did you take exactly.

BTW: When it's crashing, I can actually see 2nd screen working for about half a second, sometimes I can even move the mouse around for that amount of time, then it crashes.

Thanks for any help.

Hello, I used your EDIT 2 Method but using iPC 10.5.6 Final and I still get mouse lag! I installed everything as you stated, one after the other and then restarted, I get full resolution, QE, but still get the mouse lag about every 2-3 seconds. Please let me know how you went about getting your card to work. I also have the dual DVI issue, I cannot connect the second DVI because it just freezes ;) I doubt it has anything to do with the manufacturer because most of them get standard issued card from ATI and customized them with their own heatsinks and fans...

As for 10.5.7, I just did the standalone update downloaded from Apple. After update, I had to use the QE_CI_Exotic_Cards package to get quartz extreme supported, but very slight mouse lag is still noticeable (I also have a Logitech MX Revolution with drivers so it helps with the lag a bit)

I would greatly appreciate your input!

Just wanted to add that i run with a MacPro Rev 1,1, and that even with one monitor plugged I get a very unstable Sapphire4890 that crashes after a while under 10.5.7

I followed the instructions at http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=713428

I think its not the correct method since i get bad results from installing those files.

http://rapidshare.de/files/46982841/ATI_Init.pkg.html

http://rapidshare.de/files/46893369/accel.tar.bz2.html

http://rapidshare.de/files/47140484/...cards.pkg.html (exotic card pkg)

Are there other methods than the one described by Cindori? Other files (considering i dont have a Hackintosh)?
