But if you've got a dv6700z (i.e. a dv6700 running on AMD) and/or you're using F.32 BIOS, I've got a hack for you! jalavoui's excellent instructions still apply, but I'll try to reiterate with mods here. Do try to check for compatibility, but don't be overly concerned if you're dv6700xx isn't explicitly listed anywhere. If you're running F.32 you should be good to go. In general, WinFlash will not let you flash a BIOS for the wrong machine onto your hardware. (I was unable to flash the ep version above, for example, but YMMV.) This BIOS hack bypasses HP's whitelies, sorry, whitelist, by making use of the F9 hex code change. 1) download the bios (sp42853) from hp (link below) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...54&sw_lang= 2) extract the installer with winrar or similar archiver 3) browse into SWinFlash folder 4) replace BIOS.WPH with BIOS_F32_HACK.WPH (in attached zip file) and rename it BIOS.WPH 5) flash it (by running the SWinFlash.exe in the same folder) and you're done Intel miniPCIe cards *do* work on some HP AMD machines at least, as I am writing this post wirelessly from a so-hacked HP with an Intel 4965 AG. candycorn
it doesn't work 4 me F32 with my atheros i get -144 error You're going to have to supply better information than that. What text is associated with error -144? Which computer model did you attempt to run the upgraded BIOS on? Is the Atheros your new card? Did the hack work with your old card? Candy Intel miniPCIe cards *do* work on some HP AMD machines at least, as I am writing this post wirelessly from a so-hacked HP with an Intel 4965 AG. Here's the deal. The F.32 hack *will* allow pre-5100 Intel cards to work on AMD dv6700 laptops. I've now got a 4965 AGN working admirably in my AMD machine. However, neither the 5100 or 5300 will work therein. Now my question for you is why in the world the newer Intel miniPCE cards require a Centrino chipset in order to function properly - or at least for the driver to be installed. This sounds a lot like Intel's own HP maneuver: it looks like Intel is purposefully limiting what hardware their card will run on. Does anyone have more information on this? Jan Petersen
Hi All, Firstly thanks Candycorn for posting your findings. But to whom may try to do this, make sure you have a Phoenix Crisis disk on hand first. I have a dv6748us, which use the very same service pack BIOS update from HP, but the hacked BIOS brick my laptop. The flash goes well, and the laptop is shut down at end of flashing as per normal. But when I attempt to start the laptop again, it goes into an eternal power-on / power-off cycle. It will power up, so all the different lights come on, stay in that state for 2 seconds, then power off. Then 5 seconds later it will power on again, only to power right back down. Nothing is every written to the screen. It never get that far in the boot cycle. Anyone seen this happen before?
