Hackintosh - P5B Deluxe Wifi

Hi all,

 

I'm writing down my first experiences with Mac OS (in general - but more specifically how to use it on a PC) So this is very noobish

 

Here's my rig :

 

Geforce 8800 GT

Asus P5B-Deluxe ACPI Bios Revision 1236

Q6600 CPU

2x2 GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel

Creative X-Fi USB Headset

USB Bluetooth dongle

 

I have used following "distro" : iATKOS 5i

(Kalyway also works, but is harder to update to latest version)

 

These are the options I selected while installing :

 

iATKOS v5i Main System

Bootloader - PC EFI V9

X86 Patches - Decrypters : AppleDecrypt

SMBIOS drivers : SMBIOS-EFI

SMBIOS for X86 : AppleSMBIOS netkas

Kernel : Vanilla (nothing selected)

ACPI : Vanilla (nothing - x86 will interfere with 8800 GT)

Disabler.kext

Remove PowerManagement.kext

OHR

Remove Thermal kexts

 

Drivers

 

VGA :

- NVinject

EFI strings for nVidia - 8xxx - 8800 GT 1024MB

System :

- SATA/IDE - Intel SATA

- JMicron

- ext2fs

- NTFS-3G

Network :

- Marvel Yukon 88E8001

 

I did this on a new disk, where I installed Leopard on the first partition. (Partitioning was done from the Mac gui) (size = 25GB) The Partition format was msdos compatible, so I could dual boot (actually 5-boot, but hey, who's counting )

 

Let the OS install and after 15 or 20 minutes or so you can start fiddling around.

 

First thing I did was install the 10.5.6 update. There are some more updates you can do through the system updater so have them done also.

 

Main reason for me to try this was the graphic stuff on Mac like iPhoto and iMovie etc... I heard these were such great tools. (if you have other interesting suggestions regarding this, please let me know)

 

So most important thing to get running was my graphics card. Appearently with these default NVInject drivers Quartz Extreme isn't supported. Bummer. (you can find this through - mac logo - About this Mac - More Info - Graphics/Displays)

So after some searching I found this great package : 9f23installer.pkg

Very easy for a noob like me on Mac, just download, install, (do select both options for installing) and in the EFI utility select your card and add it to the com.apple.Boot.plist through this program.

 

Reboot and check your graphics settings again, et voila... Quartz enabled.

 

Sound was working out of the USB headset, so that was easy.

 

1 of the 2 network cards is working with the Marvell driver included in the iATKOS dvd.

(the PCI version, the PCIe probably needs other drivers, but haven't found those yet... 1 NIC working is fine for me) I did notice some kernel panics though by using this. (1 out 3 boots succesfull) So I've updated that kext with a newer release. (see link at bottem of post)

 

Ofcourse you can also use the onboard Wireless, but then you'll have to download the Realtek package to support it. It doesn't work through the Airport functionality unfortunately.

Look on the download page for the 8187L Mac OS Driver.

 

I'll update this topic when new hardware has been installed etc.

 

Suggestions of programs to try are always welcome, but I'll go through the fora for this too.

Everything worked perfect on my Desktop except for the Linein. I installed PPC version. Any info on that?

It's strange, i 've installed the same thing .... but the network doesn't work ...

 

Are you sure that this is the correct Network card ? i've got the same hardware ...

 

All works fine expect the network ... maybe i miss something.

Kamaraju : I have been using my usb headset and that worked fine, didn't bother to try and get the mb sound working, sorry.

 

NSL_Manu : There are actually 2 nic's on this mainboard. They are slightly different in drivers and I only got one working. Maybe if you switch the cable to the other NIC it might work?

 

Currently I'm not really working on this anymore, as I have installed snow leopard and am trying out that one now.

I did find a lot of drivers there. The NICS on the P5B mainboard you want to be looking for are : Marvell Yukon 88E8056 and Marvell Yukon 88E8001. In Snow Leopard I have them both working now.
