Dell has excellent hardware support, don't worry about it. If you complain enough, you can get any part replaced, even upgraded. ;)

I got LCD and video card replaced numerous times, as well as complete system replacement. :)

Be careful about LCD replacements though, you have to apply some force to separate the panel from the bezel, if the tech is not too experienced he will make the bezel frame kinda wobbly, it won't feel like before.

Guys, Same thing happens to me, although I have a T5600, 2 GB RAM, but same video card.

I have tried 3 installation discs, Uphuck 10.4.8, XxX 10.4.11, Kalyway 10.5.1, but always the same result (of course I have select ATI X1xxx driver).

At least when I tried booting with -v on Uphuck, I was able to see these 2 errors which I tried to type down:

VID: family specific matching fails

ACPIThrottle: Throttle failed with...

Setting CPU0 to Powerstate 2

rtc_cyclecount=9165000, newcount=50000000, cutoff=50000000

Please help me out, I'm desperate for using Logic Pro.

boot with "-s cpus=1"

At the prompt

/sbin /fsck -fy

//sbin /mount -uw /

After that you can edit info.plist and so on following Devilhood's tutorials because now you can write at the partition of Leopard.

But in my case (Dell 9400 laptop with Ati 1400x video) I'm still ending (after a short zebra-striped-flash), in a black screen....

Yeah, and I get the exact same thing. Mac starts to boot, then vertical white stripes appear and then goes black...

WE NEED SOME HELP GUYS! :D

try this:

<04000000 00000d00 02000000 00000007 00000000 >

It's supposed to work with your card. (VGA/DVI)

Thanks :) Worked Perfectly.......I may actually be able to start using this for work now!!!

Of course new problems popped up.....

USB ports have stopped working (not because of video - this was previous and from what I can tell also happens on actual macs), the internet keeps flaking out (wired and wireless) and for some reason the audio out stopped working (sigmatel 9200)

Any clues anyone?

Dell 6400/E1505.....2ghz Duo Core.....2 gig of ram.....200 gig 7200 sata (mbr leopard and vista).....nvidia 7300go....dell 1500 wireless n...sigmatel 9200

Good for you ...

But not in Bulgaria

I am fighting now with the Bulgarian service of Dell because they don't want to repair my machine (it was purchased in Italy but i have a premium international Warranty )

My internal card reader is not working , and it was actually never used , so they have to change the entire motherboard .... And for now my only option is to mail Dell Ireland or UK for help or something :thanks_speechbubble:

Hey guys quick question(s)

Decided to finally move on from Tiger and installed using the Kalyway 10.5.1 disk on the old E1705 (single boot config, no Windows installed)

Heat seems to be an issue. Temperature monitor consistently reads the CPU temp at 70-78 C. Now I don't fully trust that reading, but the system has locked up due to heat. The only time I have seen the heat go down to around 55 C was right after installing CPUThrottle, however the system will not boot with this loaded so I had to remove it. The kexts that normally cause heat issues have been removed, however I found that the system was hotter with the thermo kext removed so it was put back in place. I'm going to pull the fan out later just to make damned sure it's not a hardware issue that hasn't just popped up.

Second issue is booting with both cores turned on. It only appears to boot about once every 20 attempts with both cores. The rest of the times results in a single floating point exception during the boot sequence (SIGFPE error)

I've tried using both vanilla and the lastest SSE3 TOH kernel with same results. System never fails to boot on either kernel with cpus=1 or disabling second core in BIOS.

This is a fairly clean install so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's going on here, but my suspicion is that the FPE exception is due to the heat of the system at boot time as it is less likely to occur when the system has been off for a while.

Ideas? Heat was never an issue under Tiger, nor was the dual core booting up for the sleep trick.

Very odd Rogabean, I have never experienced any lockups or heat issues with my E1705 on OS X 10.5.1 thus far. The air being blown out isn't even that warm either.

My install was based on iATKOS v1.0 r2, but then I manually went through the Extensions folder and restored 99% of them to stock; exceptions being: AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext which are the same versions on the iATKOS disc.

I think I may give that a shot restoring kexts to stock. I'm assuming I can pull those from the 10.5.1 update. I'm not using AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext as that seems to only escalate the issue on mine. I thought it odd too as I never had an issue under Tiger. I was holding on with Tiger until I decided to take a leap. I guess after all the work we put into Tiger I wasn't ready to let it go. I feel a little out of it when it comes to Leopard but most things went well. I'm really happy to see the new HDA patches have garageband working with the 9200 removing my need for the USB device.

I'm going to keep playing around with it. I don't know how much of the kexts on kalyway are stock so restoring kexts might make a difference. I can repair most any installation so screwing things up isn't going to hurt anything and I can't deal with not having my second core.

Weirdest thing is under whatever combo I have right now I was actually able to boot up once with both cores enabled and not sleep, but it was a freak accident I think.

@devilhood:

Is the "graphic shuttering with Duo Core processor" problem in your 1st post still there in Leopard 10.5.1 (Kalyway for example) ? As I just installed that version and I don't see any differences in performance as well as graphics when I put "cpus=1" or remove it

Is there any other way to confirm if I get "graphic shuttering" or not ?

Regards,

ps: my laptop is Dell 1520

Afaik new Dell models (since M1330 i think) have updated BIOS and doesn't have that issue.

I have exactly the same issue after going from 10.4.10 to Leo. Dell D820 here.

Tried both Kalyway and Iatkos rel2 heating is under control but there is no way to boot with both cpus.

Booting ends with unknown SIGFPE error, then synching disks and reboot.

Stuck at CPUS=1.

It is very annoying as I had no issues with TIGER. The sleep trick worked very well and I had finally got PCMCIA card also to work perfect system....

Any ideas?

I can give you a list of my installed kext's and their version numbers if this might help? that way we can find out if it is 100% a kext related issue.

I'll see if I can post it up tonight.

Last night i was reading something about ID vendor edit in the gefoce.kext... But i´m not sure that this is the problem because with 10.5.2 kexts my video card is workin full. Just can´t connect external monitor.

Yeah, the new "generation" of Dells has no probs with 2 cores.

I had stuttering problems with 10.4.8 but from 10.4.9 never again.

Clean install to a GUID partition, EFI, Vanilla Kernel, no other modifications except fix for sound, power management, and NVInject results in the same thing. I can only boot into OS X with two cores once every 10-20 boots and eventually end in a dead lockup. Heat issue seems to be better on this install, but still high with temperature monitor reporting at about 65-58C. I"m half tempted to try an install without EFI, but that would introduce a whole new list of issues to address on it's own.

I left the machine downloading iatkos so I'm going to see if that results in the same problems vs. kalyway. Looking forward to getting either a list from you Devil or maybe a zip of your extension directory.

The machine is stable as can be running on 1 core, either via cpus=1 or disabling a core in the BIOS. Honestly running on one core wouldn't bother me for general usage, but with Fusion and Garageband I really need to utilize that second core. Plus the SIGPFE seems to be an error for a few people that needs to be nailed down.

Im still having a keyboard issue. (I hit 'E' lets say and it types "ed" over and over, does this with other characters too)

I booted into my hirens bootcd and the keyboard seems to be working fine. A member on this forum said it might a ps2 driver issue. Is there a fix for this?

Hi!

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and iam trying to install it on a 2. partition. (1st Partition is NTFS for XP, 2nd is free)

In verbose mode it says:

ApplePS2Trackpad: Synaptics TouchPad v6.2

FireWire (OHCI) VendorID 1180 ID 832 PCI now active, .....

Still waiting for root device

Then it hangs.

I also tried to disable multi core, still same error.

Does anybody know what the problem is?

Thanks.

Add a little weirdness to this. I just realized that when I had an NTFS partition as the first partition on the drive, (prior to making this a Leopard only machine) That the issue did not happen. When I first cloned the second partition to the first one problem first happened. And still persists with the whole drive as one partition.

iAtkos resulted in the same problem.

I'm thinking of possibly creating a small NTFS partition as the first partition and seeing if I can duplicate the results.

Hi!

I don't know accurately what you mean.

I need my NTFS Partition, i can't erase it. (I want a Dual Boot System). I have also a "Recovery" Partition on my Harddrive. (I think also NTFS).

What do you mean with: "NTFS partition as the first partition on the drive"?

He wasn't talking about your issue Michael.

michaelOSX: your problem is a common one, you should search the forum first because 'root device' issues mainly occur when OS X cannot see your hard disk/controller.

rogabean: sorry I haven't had a chance to get back to you with anything, I'm currently in the process of moving to a new apartment so it has been a busy week

I can confirm one thing quickly for you though, that my first partition is NTFS too, running Windows Vista Ultimate. You could be onto something here.

I finally got to install and boot OSX succesfully on my Inspiron 6400. The issue of the vertical white stripes after boot went away when I followed the advice in this topic to not install any graphic drivers for my X1400.

Now, I installed the Sigmatel 9200 that came in the install disc I used, XxX 10.4.11, but got no audio. Anyway, I think I'll be able to sort that out in the future...

But the main thing is that I think the system runs very slow. Finder windows do not run smoothly. Is there a reason for this, and a way to solve it?

In case you need to know, the extras I installed were: PC-EFI bootloader v8 mbr, some essential patches marked by default (files ApplePS2Controller, DictionaryFix, VerboseMode, CPUPowerManagement.kext_remover, System.Profiler.patch), the Sigmatel 9200 driver, and a NO-EFI systems kexts thing that was also marked by default (files IOATAFamily, ACPIPlatform, APIC, SMBIOS), so I didn't want to disable it although the bootloader did say EFI.

Edit: Damn it, everything was going fine until I went to the Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions...

Now while booting it stops on

#localhost /root: _here a space to type

Why did this happen?
