TheGreatDeceiver
hey can someone tell me why my keyboard doesn' t work after i install iATKOS v1.0i r2? Keyboard works fine until I get to the Welcome screen to set up the account... ??? sounds like the wrong combination of AppleACPIPlatform.kext and kernel. if you use the vanilla kext on non vanilla kernel or sth similar you get no ps2 devices, which includes your notebooks keyboard. somebody posted a fix for that for which you inject a file into the above kext (search for ACPIPS2Nub.kext). but it's just easier to use an older kext instead. Kujila
Does anyone have the file: AppleHDA_Dell_Inspiron_9400.zip from tbcareys post/reply regarding the fix for independent subwoofer control etc? I also hear there is a fix to get the mute button to fix via a plist. Thanks, Chris. Seriously, can someone mirror this please? kimnicebutdim
Installing 10.4.11 from 10.4.9 on Dell Inspiron e1405/640m w/ PC_EFI, vanilla kernel and (some) vanilla kexts I thought I would share some notes I made while attempting to install 10.4.11 on my wife's Dell Inspiron e1405/640m. These may help someone fast track towards a working system. I hope so, as I've spent enough time mucking around with this. The aim was to run PC_EFI, vanilla kernel and as many vanilla kexts as possible. I have drawn from quite a few posts in the process, too many to reference and I have lost track. Background: I initially installed Leopard 10.5.1 via iATKOS v1.0iR2. No initial problems but soon found that the mouse tearing and graphical glitch problems that occur on Firefox (and apparently the CS3 suite) using the GMA950 were limiting. There is a Natit injector fix by Paulicat but it does not currently work for Dell-based systems. I also could not get the battery indicator to display using PowerManagement.bundle updated by Jaro. Decided to install 10.4.11 instead. Dell Inspiron e1405 (aka 640m in New Zealand) Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz Intel Express 945GM Chipset Intel GMA950 Video Sigmatel 9200 Sound 1GB (2x512MB) RAM @ 667MHz (stock) 80GB Hitachi SATA (stock) NEC ND-6650A DVD+/-RW 8X (stock) Dell Wireless 1490 MiniPCI (upgraded from stock Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG which is not OSX compatible, cheap on eBay) Dell 350 Bluetooth module Broadcom 440x Ethernet 10/100 Integrated Controller NOTE: Installed OSX using cpus=1 kernel flag and added this to com.apple.Bootlist.plist as soon as OSX booted. Installing 10.4.9 Partitioned drive using GParted LiveCD, removing worthless DELL MediaDirect software and partition. Flagged partition boot/active Installed OSX using uphuck 10.4.9 Universal v1.3 DVD. Installed using Universal 8.9.1 kernel, GMA950 drivers options After successful install, Dell Wireless 1490 detected as AirPort, Dell 350 Bluetooth module working. Installed IONetworkingFamily.kext from page 1 for Broadcom 440x to work. Applying 10.4.10 Delta update Followed these topics for guidelines on updating OSX: 1 and 2 Backup mach_kernel, critical kexts, and important drivers: AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleAPIC.kext, AppleSMBIOS.kext, IOATAFamily.kext, IONetworkingFamily.kext, System.kext. Applied 10.4.10 update, do not restart. Copy back above files. Restarted, booted ok but system flashed the blue screen of OSX then faded to black, OSX still running in background but blank screen because 10.4.10 installs updated GMA950 drivers Boot into single user mode and remove AppleIntelGMA* kexts and AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext Removed /Backups folder containing GMA950 kexts (how did those get there?). I may be wrong but these appeared to be copied back to Extensions folder each time I removed above files Restarted with OSX in 1024x768 VESA mode Installed GMA950 package from JaS 10.4.8 DVD. I may be wrong but GMA950 package from uphuck 10.4.9 v1.3 appeared not to work properly. Installed 8.10.1 Universal kernel. Intel only 8.10.1 kernel did not seem to work. Must have matching version of System.kext otherwise can't mount .DMG images. Updating kernel to 8.10.1 from 8.9.1 probably not necessary as 8.9.1 works in 10.4.10 but I did it anyway. Applying 10.4.11 Delta update Backed up kernel and critical kexts Applied update Copied back 8.10.1 kernel and critical kexts, no GMA950 update in 10.4.11 Rebooted into single user mode and applied netkas' PC_EFI bootloader patch v8.0 Rebooted into OSX, PC_EFI works with 8.10.1 universal kernel and patched kexts. 10.4.11 Vanilla kernel and kexts Stuffed around for ages trying to find right combination of kernel and kexts. Method: get vanilla kernel working then add vanilla kexts one by one Need dsmos.kext installed to run vanilla kernel, however dsmos.kext not included in latest PC_EFI (v8.0). Found dsmos.kext in PCI_EFI v5.2 but causes kernel panic (Leopard only?). Downloaded an older version (or at least a different version of size 40KB (or 31,571bytes) from the 10.4.11 Mini install guide post on OSx86 forums, courtesy of mac.nub/iGuru. SUCCESS! booting with 8.11.1 vanilla kernel using dsmos.kext from iGuru's post (iGuru's custom compiled version of AppleSMBIOS.kext is included in download from post but breaks parts of System Profiler, recommended to use version from uphuck's 10.4.9) AppleEFIRuntime.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext do not need to be removed (on some systems they need to) Installed/restored vanilla kexts successfully: System.kext (8.11.1), AppleACPIPlatform.kext (1.0.10) Installed/restored vanilla kexts unsuccessfully: IOATAFamily.kext (hangs boot), AppleSMBIOS.kext (1.0.12, adds Diagnostics entries in System Profiler but breaks Hardware page) AppleHDA Codec dump from ubuntu Live CD using terminal command "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 > [path and filename to dump to].txt" No sound using codec dump and AppleHDAPatcher, reason is that SPDIF is detected which is not supported on laptop (thanks to tbcarey in earlier post for pointing this out). Solution is to remove SPDIF entries in codec dump, but I matched VendorID and SubsystemID to codec dump on http://psykopat.free.fr/apple/AppleHDA/sigmatel/ Speakers work, headphone output works, volume up/down buttons work. Mute does not work, speakers not muted when headphones inserted. See post #294 and #300 from tbcarey for more info. Seems to be limitation with AppleHDAPatcher. Applied modded Info.plist to AppleHDA.kext from tbcarey's post (can't remember if it was from post #294 or #300) which provides muting. Headphones and speakers still not decoupled. Make sure to select second "Internal speaker" entry in sound preferences, first entry maps to Subwoofer output specified in modded Info.plist which is non-existent on e1405 and is added by modded Info.plist. Tidy up Replace PowerManagement.bundle with one on page 1. Be sure to enable icon in Menu from Energy Saver preferences. Installed Temperature Monitor from Marcel Bresink http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html and Dashboard widget to monitor processor temperature Conclusions: I'm happy with the system. It's more responsive than Leopard. Not being able to mute speakers with headphones is annoying but not a major problem. Sleep doesn't work but it doesn't seem like it ever will with GMA950. Good luck!

If you can't follow the instructions, you need to read my guide more thoroughly, more specifically, the 'How to install a kext' part. 1) Delete existing AppleHDA.kext and ALCinject.kext files in /System/Library/Extensions 2) Mount image file and copy kext files into /System/Library/Extensions 3) Delete /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and /System/Library/Extensions.mkext 4) Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist 5) Run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions 6) Copy 'Play Thru for SigmaTel 9200' to the folder of your choice and use as necessary in order to hear input device audio via speakers

Stuff like that usually happens after liquid spillage/shortage on your keyboard, where certain characters are continuously inputted. If this problem does not occur on Windows, DOS, CMD or the XP Recovery Console, then it is a PS2 driver issue with the Mac.
hakeem9
I am having problems with my E1405 with the Intel GMA950. Installation is Brazilmac 10.5.0 with EFI v5 - install went smoothly (I have already built 5 functioning Hackintoshes) everything appears to function correctly, but after the white Apple loader screen the screen turns blue then immediately turns black. I've tried with cpus=1 as well and have the same problem. Anyone have any idea why? During the installer the screen is at the correct resolution and display works fine, so I'm confused why this doesn't seem to work. I've tried replacing AppleIntelGMA950* from a retail DVD but that didn't fix it either. Any advice appreciated

touchthesky
Hello,I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop with Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz (T7200), 1 GB RAM and ATI RADEON X1400 videocard. I successfully install Leopard Kallyway, but after the loading screen, when the login screen should appear, it goes to a black screen and nothing happen from then... I don't know how to add other kexts since my system is not starting. I've tried from Terminal, running DVD but I wasn't able...Also I've tried from Ubuntu live CD, but again, I wasn't able..because Leopard Volume was seen as Read-Only... Any advices please? Guys, Same thing happens to me, although I have a T5600, 2 GB RAM, but same video card. I have tried 3 installation discs, Uphuck 10.4.8, XxX 10.4.11, Kalyway 10.5.1, but always the same result (of course I have select ATI X1xxx driver). At least when I tried booting with -v on Uphuck, I was able to see these 2 errors which I tried to type down: VID: family specific matching fails ACPIThrottle: Throttle failed with... Setting CPU0 to Powerstate 2 rtc_cyclecount=9165000, newcount=50000000, cutoff=50000000 Please help me out, I'm desperate for using Logic Pro. 008200
boot with "-s cpus=1" At the prompt /sbin /fsck -fy //sbin /mount -uw / After that you can edit info.plist and so on following Devilhood's tutorials because now you can write at the partition of Leopard. But in my case (Dell 9400 laptop with Ati 1400x video) I'm still ending (after a short zebra-striped-flash), in a black screen....

Do you people have any idea why if i leave my Laptop sleeping for a few hours with a Sleep+Speedstep kernel after opening the lid or waking the machine up the screen is staying black and the system is non-responsive , and after the wake up from the first (cold start ) the system is responsive only for the mouse ... in the first 1-2 minutes or so ? I really tried alll the possible Speedstep kernels and still the same effect .... I am out of ideas for this one ... Thanks

tbcarey
Thanks everyone for the kind replies. Hope to take next weekend to pull some things together - really! Just a quick question, and I hope I'm not going too off-topic here: how extensive is the Dell extended warranty / support policy? When I purchased my 9400, I received an additional 3 years on-site support. I believe that others have mentioned using this warranty to upgrade or replace various components, even in the absence of distinct damage. For example, my Sharp LCD panel's backlighting appears to be weakening and becoming unevenly distributed. Is this the sort of thing that can be replaced on-site, without having to ship my laptop off for three weeks and have someone meddling with the rest of it as well? Sorry if this question has an obvious answer, but I've searched the Dell support site and the terms and conditions err on the side of 'intentionally vague and non-committal' when it comes to this sort of thing. Any help is greatly appreciated!
zik_man
If your LCD panel have problems, I don't think they can repair it at your home, because it's not easy to change. I had a little problem with my GPU Fan and a technician came and changed it but for a LCD panel I'm not sure Dell can change it on-site...

Any help is greatly appreciated! I have had an extensive history with Dell in-regards to replacing parts, and they have always sent out an engineer to replace the individual component, regardless if it's an LCD panel, or the motherboard itself. Replacing the part is actually a lot easier than people think. They have an online service manual which they will refer to you if you are ever required to replace a component yourself. I've had a new LG LCD panel fitted due to light leakage, upgraded the 7800 Go to a 7900 GS due to heat issues, RAM due to Parity BSOD's and two motherboard replacements due to the FireWire port being extremely flimsy. I even got the engineer to use AS5 thermal paste on the CPU when he popped down The next time I get a problem and chat to them, they will probably end up replacing the laptop altogether with one of the new 17xx model Inspirons (this has happened to a lot of E1705 owners). Usually it's best to use their online Tech chat support rather than ringing them, because you can prepare exactly what to tell them before hand, making the whole process painless and with a guaranteed positive outcome. I've a INSPIRON 9400, many thanks , now I have sound !! But I have the fu:$ù$ù$ Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG and I hope that it will work a day !
