Well, I seem to have everything pretty much up and running thanks to this thread. Awesome!

I just cant seem to get my resolution to change from the default 1024x768 which kinda sucks. I see that some people have theirs a bit higher, but for some reason mine doesnt seem to work. I have the x1400 if anyone has any suggestions :/

RTFP(Read the First Post!).

And for those wondering, I spent a cool $100 on Ebay for my 1500M/7900GS. Got real lucky, though.

@mid-waltz, if you can use a screwdriver and pliers, you can replace the video card. Try NVject, BTW.

Here's something I haven't seen much about and was hoping devil some ideas...

I can get the Dell MediaDirect button on my laptop to attempt to boot OS X instead of MediaDirect, but in order to do so this requires to run the rmbr tool included with the MD3 disk (I have MD3 some of you might have MD2). Once I run that it attempts to boot OS X when I hit the MD button, but HFS+ Partition error. Fixing the partition error stops MD from attempting to boot OS X again...

any thoughts?

called dell spain, they won't change components. and according to the dell site, the only nvidia option for the 6400 (E1505) is the 7300, which is hard to find on ebay, only one item and not available to europe. Plus, if I replace it, I'll most probably lose the 4 years warranty. So I'm stuck with 1400.

according to this post there's no big hopes for a 1400 fix. But it does say that 1400 works on an external monitor (something to do with the 1300 driver). Does that mean there's a way to get full resolution and video acceleration on an external monitor? that would be perfect for me, since I usually work only on the external monitor with the LCD off... how do I do that?

Hello. I'm from Spain and I have a 9400 with 10.4.9 uphuck v1.2 installed on it. It runs smoothly (i don't know with how many smothness the system works with other versions). I've sound, airport, network, Geforce 7900, etc. working correctly, except SLEEP. I use cinema 4d (3d application) and the possibility to use both cores after sleeping is a very good new for me. But i can't.

I tried to manually install the acpicputhrottler.kext from irc.osx86.hu channel #acpi but it turns my system highly inestable showing a window with a big power button saying "Error. you must press a bit the power button to shutdown" in many languajes (I think this is the worst window that osx can show, similar to blue-crash-screen in Windows XP).

I must try to install the powermanagement.bundle that you said? Or in this case are another solution? Paulicat kernel? I must use another kernel to improve performance?

I have installed the acpicputhrottle package v.1.16 from prasys and the application seems to work properly, but doesn't awake from sleep.

Please help me. Thanks a lot. (Sorry for my bad english)

rogabean, the mbr tool that comes with md3 will change your partition table and change the order of your partitions. It places the MD partition in first place, makes it hidden when you boot normaly. when you press the MD button it will boot into this partition, when you shut down MD it will set your boot order to boot from your normal c partition and hide the MD partition again (unless you press the MD button again).

confusing I know. the MD button rearranges the partition table (or sets sth differently). when you close MD that will revert this and you are able to boot normally when you press the regular on button.

the mbr tool will set the partition type to work with MD ( I think it's F). If you have something other than this type you will get an error. Even if you were able to boot into that the new OS will not switch back the partition table to normal (like MD) and you will not be able to boot with your regular on button and you will get a "missing files" error or similar.

anyway, at this point MD and OSX are incompatible I believe. I have tried this with dual boot (XP/OSX and Vista/OSX) and just OSX, but I never got MD to work along with OSX. Possibly somebody could make a bootloader that can change partition tables according to MD format.

I'm going to be replacing my 7800 Go with a 7900 GS at some point this week probably, they're both just as compatible as each other.

Hi,

I just want to do exactly the contrary : change my 7900 GS for a slower one.

I don't make games and this cards is hot and makes the fans run to often for my taste.

I don't need such a power and would prefer to have the coldest one.

When I have bought my 9400 one month ago I had not the choice.

Could you share any info about how to do it, if it is really possible ?

Does a 7800 run cooler ?

Thanks !

Does anyone know how/why the dvdrw drive in these laptops will not respond. if i dont' use the device for a while, it won't spinup again, and i can't unmount/eject it using F12 or the umount /dev/disk1

thanks

Yes but I can make the MD button boot Ubuntu just fine by running the rmbr tool (rmbr DELL 1 3)

It only seems to not work with OS X.

Actually Go 7800 runs hotter than Go 7900 GS. 7800 (G70) uses 110nm process technology, 7900 (G71) uses 90nm.

The 7800 Go run between 10-20 Celcius hotter than the 7900 GS.

If you want a cool laptop, buy a dual heat pipe 7900 GS :P

Edit: Chrysaor beat me to it! heheh.

damn, hacking is like having a child or something... now we have to think about the temperature of the videocard..?

I'm curious, up to what temperature does the current macbook pro card go? the 8600 GT. these computers are usually so hot (in many ways)

The only thing I still can't seem to get working right is display sleep.

Is this working for anyone?

I looked through here and din't really see anything. I've been able to get regular sleep working.. sorta... but if I let just the display go to sleep it never wakes up.

I would like the display to go to sleep so that I can close the lid using insomnia (which does work.. just the display stays on)

Sleep has been working for a few individuals, but I have been unable to find out exactly what causes the non-waking syndrome.

It could be a combination of slightly different hardware, BIOS versions or the new kexts in 10.4.9.

Sleep used to work for me with the very first installation of JaS 10.4.8 yonks ago, but since upgrading certain bits and bobs and putting 10.4.9 on, it has suddenly stopped working.

Our best hope is the ACPI integration with Prasys' kext, coupled with Netkas' Sleep kernel, but that does not include the Dell ACPI Tables yet.

Regards,

Pawel.

Sleep works if u :

jas 10.4.8 install.

jas 10.4.9 combo upgrade.

I dont know if the video cards affect anything, but i use NvidiaEFI 1.0 for my 7900gs.

Then install the paulicat kernel, and sleep/resume works fine.

With the netkas kernel, sleep works, but the resume locks the display up, no keyboard, etc, might be able to still ssh in, though i don't know.

I'd really like to dig more into the display reinitializing issue, where the display goes to "sleep" but when u move a mouse, all it does is go from black, to back lit black.

If anyone has any ideas i'd be glad to help debug.

Thanks. That all helped some. Using Paulicat instead is allowing sleep to work a little better although I was able to get sleep to mostly work under netkas as well partially, but using Paulicat's I can do the sleep trick to initialize the second core.

Switching from NVidiaEFI 1.0.2 to 1.0.1 helped as well.

Still no proper display sleep as the screen will go black but not return.. however sending the computer to sleep and waking it back up when the display is off brings the display back. It's not a pretty solution but it's better than nothing atm.

I've noticed the real hangup when returning from sleep is it reinitializing all of the hardware.. USB especially takes bit. I'd say it's a 1-2 minute wait.

Whats new about the second core support without the sleep trick? i see in the console at startup that the follow things:

Jun 18 21:31:49 localhost kernel[0]: Enabling XMM register save/restore and SSE/SSE2 opcodes
Jun 18 21:31:49 localhost kernel[0]: ACPI CA 20060421
Jun 18 21:31:49 localhost kernel[0]: AppleACPICPU: ProcessorApicId=0 LocalApicId=0 Enabled

Jun 18 21:31:49 localhost kernel[0]: using 10485 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers
Jun 18 21:31:49 localhost kernel[0]: Enabling XMM register save/restore and SSE/SSE2 opcodes

Jun 18 21:31:49 localhost kernel[0]: ACPI: System State [S0 S3 S4 S5] (S3)

Can paulicat "simple" start the second core on the same way?

Ok, thanks for the answers. I'll try the Paulicat's Kernel (I have uphuck 10.4.9 v1.2 with uses Darwin Kernel I think) or wait for a real solution... Now im going to make working the subwoffer (without it the sound is horrible!!!)

EDIT: Subwoffer working ok!!!

I'm using Uphuck's 1.3 with "SpeedStep support is included in the latest Darwin 8.9.1 kernel release for 10.4.9, but you will need the Power Management package put together by Prasys, macdotnub and duddie to provide full SpeedStep, Sleep and CPU Scaling"

Still having problems waking up from sleep.. But i found out that its not the computer thats sleeping, just the display is not reinitializing. When i try pressing the power button, i saw the hdd activity light up. So i got curious and plug in an external monitor..

Just when i plug it in, both monitors worked (Display switch to dual display mode and empty desktop on external monitor? didn't press FN F8)

Could be a forced reinitialization of the graphics buffer....

Anyone can help me emulate this using a shortcut key?

hi,

i tried to install the NVidiaEFI.kext but it didn't work. it is stuttering like before when i move a window. it seems like it hadn't been installed correctly. can anyone of you guys helo me.

thanks

Shortyman87

Is it loading correctly in verbose? try booting with -v

Have you made sure to set cpus=1 kernel flag in the boot plist? you might be experiencing the dual-core stutter problem.

Try DiaboliK's Natit if NvidiaEFI is giving you problems.
