still hanging in here. Wish there would be some news on the gma950 c2d front. heard anything? you think something might be possible?

the only difference I ever see is if I use silent natit. But the system gets stuck at KP. At least it's doing something and my feeling is that this may be a way out as well, e.g matching IDs in natit and gma950 driver or similar.

thanks

I don't think another guide is necessary. Just have devilhood link to noob's guide. He mentioned to update the guide anyway. Unless you have a different procedure with new kexts that address problems for the Inspirons. But that's just my opinion.

Also, I think writing a guide requires a great amount of knowledge. My hat off to these folks. It's called the Genius section for a reason. Writing a guide means being there when people come with problems and providing knowledgeable help, going as far as hacking kexts and writing scripts.

and if he has a core2duo he might run into the same issues I have, that is gma950 kexts are not loaded no matter what and the system is stuck at 1024x768

Noob, there seems to be a typo in the com.apple.boot.plist (both files under root and extra).

<string>-arch=1386 -x32</string> should be i386

Hah thank you, guess making one at 2 AM creates some issues :)

Here is the fixed one, I'll get to testing it out later tonight

updated my thread with the new iso, question why dont we start developing utilites for these dells again for snow leopard (just like the post installer and so on)?

go for it. Sontone is looking for help. The guy who wanted to take it over is quiet at the moment. Go over there, introduce yourself and make your suggestions. Maybe work with him on a new patcher. Good idea.

can anyone please upload there info.plist from there ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin, in a snow leopard extensions folder?

Regards

Hope this helps.

The Great Deciever: Have you've tried to forcing the kexts to load on startup? Have you've also tried putting it into the hidden EFI?

I've been searching around the forums to understand DSDT patching but it's complicated and I don't know where to begin. I think it can do wonders for the GMA950.

thanks for thinking of me :) and the link. I just tried to search for that rc file but I don't have it. I am wondering if it's sth for Tiger. The post is really really old ;). I did delete the mkext and cache... but no luck. nothing seems to bother this bug...

I agree with you that there is likely something possible with DSDT or a video rom with latest chameleon. Just a matter of time I hope.

edit1: ok, just tried to force load the gma950 kexts and get error messages (kextload...).

if I use kextutil it basically tells me that 64bit dependencies are missing. I know it's only 32bit and I am running SL in 32bit. Still I get this:

bash-3.2# kextutil AppleIntelGMA950.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMA950.kext has problems:
Warnings:
The booter does not recognize symbolic links; confirm these files/directories aren't needed for startup:
	/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMA950.kext/Contents/CodeDirectory
	/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMA950.kext/Contents/CodeRequirements
	/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMA950.kext/Contents/CodeResources
	/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMA950.kext/Contents/CodeSignature
Kexts should declare dependencies on either com.apple.kernel* or com.apple.kpi.* libraries, not both.
Executable does not contain code for architecture:
	x86_64

Dependency Resolution Failures:
64-bit kexts must use com.apple.kpi.* libraries, not com.apple.kernel* libraries.

ok, where exactly do I see whether I am running 32 or 64 bit, anybody? I check under SystemProfiler, but there is nothing about that. Noob, any idea?

edit2: fixed it, finally got 1280x800. something is not loaded/recognized from my boot.plist on the EFI partition.

Finally. New sig. thanks to Noob766

thanks to Jon who got me on the right path. Nothing is perfect, not even chameleon.

two important findings.

a ) The AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext provided in Noob's installation will lead to artifacts on my system. It's perfect for installation though. Once system is installed I suggest to apply expose mouse trick or script to wake display from sleep on login and use stock framebuffer - no artifacts or mouse tearing.

b ) No matter what I do to make the system boot into 32bit in com.apple.boot.plist on the EFI partition or (not and) SystemPreferences folder, it will always boot 64bit. I've tried every possible permutation that's out there. The only way for me to boot the system into 32bit is by entering

arch=i386

at the Chameleon boot menu. The slightest change to this, e.g. -arch=i386 and nada. Interestingly it takes all other kernel flags fine, e.g. cpus=1 works without a problem in boot.plist from the EFI partition.

now waiting for fixed kernel......

Ok two fairly stupid questions but important all the same, is this extract from your boot.plist, if so where is that particular boot.plist located if not where did you get that extract from?

nope, this is info from system configuration. The com.apple.boot.plist (often shortened to boot.plist) is normally located in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration (need to check to make sure that's correct in a bit myself), but you can also load it from the Extra folder on the hidden EFI partition. It doesn't matter whether I put the graphics string into the boot.plist or not, or whether I define resolultion. All that matters is the kernel flag at the chameleon prompt.
