The iMac can address 6GB (2007+ models) by inserting 1 x 2GB and 1 x 4GB module. However, you really want to use two of the same kind (dual-channel memory) for maximum performance.

Corsair has some great modules, up to 28% faster than Apple memory modules!

The question is: Can the iMac actually use the faster RAM? Remember that RAM rating is a maximum, not necessarily the speed at which the RAM is actually accessed. For example: Putting 800 MHz RAM on a motherboard that can only access RAM at 667 MHz won't increase performance at all. You might as well get the slower, cheaper RAM in that case.

Okay thanks for the replies i'll get the 2gb and upgrade to 4gb sometime in the future. Is it quite easy to upgrade like on the older Macs?

if you buy an imac with 2 gig, they put two 1 gig modules in each memory slot of you imac (it has only 2 slots), so if you plan to upgrade later, you have to buy 2 new modules and throw the other 2 away. I suggest you order the imac with 4 gig standard

EDIT: or just wait for the new imacs which are coming soon :D

How soon? I was thinking of getting one at the start of next month.

Absolutey, because the standard Apple memory modules use a higher latency (CAS) - IBM did the same, I mean using cheaper parts, and this year after year so this is not uncommon in the industry. Anyway, please follow the provided link and open that PDF which reads:

"Corsair's 4GB Mac Memory upgrade kit utilizes the industries first low latency modules tuned for the new MacBook and MacBook Pro laptop computers. Testing has demonstrated that as much as 28% overall system performance improvement is achieved with the new Corsair low latency memory mudules versus standard mac upgrade memory."

Now scroll down to: "Compatible with MacBook, MacBook Pro and Intel-based versions of the imac supporting 4GB of system memory."

Then wait four more weeks.

Listen: I went to Mediamarkt in Germany yesterday, and noticed stickers over the price tags stating: "Currently out of stock" and the sales rep there litterally said: "We won't order new iMac's before April". So I asked why and he said: "I already answered that question".
