Alternative NVIDIA 10.5.6 Quicktime 7.55/7.6 Mouse Lag Fix

If you are suffering this bug you know what I'm talking about, its been discussed in several threads here or here, there are several fixes already posted here mostly by cyclonefr, but they involve downgrading either quicktime or nvidia kexts to earlier versions, or crossflashing Mac BIOSes on NVIDIA PC Cards.

If you dont know what I'm talking about, this fix is for the jumpy mouse behaviour (the cursor moving a few pixels on its own) you experience every few seconds when you move the mouse and:

- You are running Leopard 10.5.6 with NVIDIA 10.5.6 kexts (1.5.36.25)

- You have an NVIDIA G84 or G92 based card (GeForce 8600, 8800 among others...)

- You updated Quicktime to v7.5.5 or v7.6

- You are most likely using an external monitor (i.e. not a laptop screen) with any connection but probably most noticeable on DVI/HDMI.

- You only have mouse lag when QuickTime or iTunes are running.

If you experience the mouse lag and you meet all this condition this fix might apply to you.

Its simple:

Remove (delete or move to another directory for backup) the file:

AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext

from /System/Library/Extensions folder.

Reboot and the jumpy mouse behavior should be gone (remember to delete extensions.mkext or boot with -f option).

I have just found this a short while ago and it works for me without any troubles or side effects so far, if you find any problems please report back.

Specifically one thing that could theoretically be affected is playing iTunes-protected HD video, I dont have any such file to test it, so if you have any please test it and see if it iTunes lets you play the file without errors.

EDIT: I havent got any confirmation but it seems this file doesnt affect playing protected HD video content at all. In fact it seems what this file purpose is to enable HDCP encoding on supported graphics card when needed (right now, its only happening when playing iTunes protected HD video content), so I think removing this file DOES NOT disable HDCP capability on the video hardware as it has been reported, in fact it just disables HDCP enforcing by applications (QuickTime & iTunes), which is very different.

Thanks!!!! works for me! The rom flashing for my 8800 was not working!!! Thanks!!! By the way, what this kext is meant to do?

One of its jobs is well known because of big discussions about it on forums. It is to check HDCP-displays and allow or not playing protected videos. Many users before had an issue when their payed videos did not play and showed only grey screen. The answer was to delete this kext.

Could not even imagine that the answer was so simple. Guess bios flash helped cause macs bios contains the right procedure to detect wether the display is HDCP compliant. Now it simply skips this check (maybe leaves an angry message about missed kext in console :D )

Who will now say that Apple doesn't worry about data protection? :P

Stell put this here to inform the people with EFI Partition Boot/Boot-132 that there is a disabler.kext that will stop this evil kext. This is to avoid deleting kexts and making your install non retail.

Ahh! I deleted the ktext yesterday ;) is there a way to reinstall it?

the quicktime mouse lag was resolved i believe with the latest update. The mouse still jitters as you use the computer longer. Its definitely driver related, and nothing to do with quicktime IMO. When it occurs and i turn my second display off and on the mouse skips disappear. I believe theres an issue independent of the quicktime.

You don't necessarily have to delete anything, or reboot.

sudo -s

kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext/

mv /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext/ /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUpstreamUserClient.disabled/

Instant benefits!

I used the terminal command. Flawless. I thought my harddrives were going bad when I saw this error for the first time. Then I noticed it only happened when I opened QuickTime Pro.

Then I searched here :D))

Thanks,

Thank you SOOO much for this! I have been having this issue for awhile now, and only downgrading my Quicktime to 7.4something fixed this issue. However, in doing so I was unable to watch any downloaded TV/Movie content from the iTunes Store.

With this fix, you allow me to run QT 7.6 which gives me no issues watching movies. Who knew the solution was so easy!

Thanks again!

Hi,

Installing newer nvidia drivers solved the problem for me, I no longer need to remove AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext. The drivers I installed are those who is shipped with the new mac edition of the GTX 2xx card from evga. The drivers can be found here:

http://rapidshare.de/files/47522089/NVIDIA...6.mpkg.zip.html

These drivers is not just for 2xx card it supports other nvidia cards as well. My 8800 GT now works fine.

Try it and report back :)

EDIT: I have upgraded to 10.5.7 which contains a newer version of AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext, I cannot say 100% if its the 10.5.7 upgrade or the newer nvidia drivers above that fixed the problem.

EDIT2: It seems I still notice some minor lag, I fixed the problem by flashing the bios on the card. See this thread:

Hi everyone!

I tried the disabler kext, but it doesn't work for me. I can't be really sure if the issue has started since the 10.5.7 upgrade, but I'm pretty sure it did.

What I know is that the mouse sometimes skips on the sides, like it was misreading from the surface its moving on. It happened with my old Logitech G3 and it happens now with my Roccat Kone. And it doesn't seem to be "app-related": the little {censored} jumps around even with only finder open.

I'll try to see if with an old 10.5.6 distro the thing happens the same.

Any suggestion would be appreciated
