Hi,

I just reviewed the HCL list and am thinking of getting

the following hardware to run macos.

Motherboard: ASUS P4P800S-X

Graphics: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

Would really appreciate if you could share experience and

advise if the above hardware works or any problems

I should be aware of.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Thats an Intel socket 478 motherboard. I'm need to use this type of board

as I have an old intel p4 1.7 GHz cpu that I would like to re-use.

What other graphics card other than the 9600 pro can I use? Thanks

Don't worry, just use 9600 pro. It will work very well and you will have 3D acceleration (QE) and core graphics.

I have it and it is working very well, only very little mouse tearing....but video is great. But I don't really know about your motherbord

Good luck and welcome to os x 86.

My advice. Stick to onboard Intel 915 until someone comes up with the right drivers for either ATI or nVidia.

Speaking for myself, I'm running a widescreen LCD. I have an x700, and it doesn't work at any widescreen modes. (Simple plist editing doesn't work, just so we're clear.) OTOH, if you have a normal CRT, you will have to put up with 60Hz refresh rate. (There is only one rez that works, but it's not a good refresh rate either.) That can seriously hurt your eyes, if not murder them.

There ARE unsolved issues with ATI and nVidia cards. So it's prudent for you to browse this board, do a bit of homework, as opposed to taking others' word for it, rush out, get a card, and slam right into a wall, then come back to the board crying for help.

Erm. may I point out that just because your ATi x700 doesnt work doesnt mean that a 9600 wont? Please, good guy, live up to your nick & stick to commenting on what you *know* to be true, rather than your assumptions. The wiki HCL is the proper place for such knowledge. If you have good grounds to disagree with it, then that is a matter to be looked into.

I know this may look like I am picking on you for harassment, but it is a general problem that is on the increase in the entire scene. there aren't enough experts to correct all the marginal advice being given out, so please, everyone, stick to what you *know* to be true, not what you assume on the basis of limited experience.

I think he is offering sound advice. I know there has been a lot of progress with drivers lately but it is clear that these are still works in progress. Buying a motherboard with an Intel GMA 900 or 950 for now makes a lot of sense for general use.

Fine :gathering: I am more than happy to accept that statement, However it was the idea that the 9600 doesnt work I was taking issue with, not the wisdom of going for a GMA-equipped board, with which I agree entirely.

Perhaps I should have exoressed myself more clearly.

The second part, however remains true. Whilst many people struggle to improve the quality of the information and discussion on this board, there is an increasing issue of people who respond with marginal advice, which is something we should all avoid.

I stand by what I said. Like people here, I too want a video card that works. I've done my homework and found that none really does. Or at least not what you'd normally expect. Yeah sure, after a patch my X700 works, just like the 9600. But I wouldn't be so smug as to call it 100% working, as that's what "perfect" means. No, I refrain from that cos then other people might take that as gospel truth, and blame me when they find out otherwise. So you can chide me for all you want, mod, but the fact remains: if after a patch, the card doesn't switch rez, and it displays any or all of the symptoms I stated above, then you don't have a card that "works perfectly". You might think different, I dunno. But I just want this disclaimer to be out here, just in case.

And here's the thread about artifacting 9600. Be on the lookout for Omni's progress report on driver hacking. He's your God from now on.
