"All you need to do to get it to work is Video injection thru dsdt, maybe efi strings too.

I used ACPI Patcher to generate video part for my Zotac 9800gt eco 1 gig and the dsdt.aml is ALL that is required to get it to work for Leopard 10.5.7 as well as Snow Leopard."

Can somebody provide a step by step on how to do this? this is for Geforce 9800 GT

4) GTx 285 is just way to expensive but i might go for a 4870. everything works for the 4870? if it is a easy install, can you tell me how to do it?

I would recommend trying hard to find an Nvidia-chipset card you can live with. My experience with the 2600HD and the 4850 ATI cards has left a sour taste in my mouth, while the Nvidia 8500 & 9600GT cards have been virtually plug and play.

Also - for those who have heartburn with getting the Realtek ethernet drivers to work in 64 bit mode, consider taking a crowbar to your wallet and spending 12 wafer-thin dollars on this:

TRENDnet TEG-PCITXR

This card works natively with Apple drivers. Disable the onboard Gigabyte ports, plug this sucker in and forget about it.

Hi maj,

your box is full, so thought i'd post it herE

i booted into Snow leo! so here were the steps i took.

1) Did a clean install with your script

2) deleted ati1000.kext-ati3000.kext (forgot the numbers, but i deleted all of it)

3) opened efi partion thru option 7 in your script.

4) moved all the kext located in Efi/extra/stored_kext over to Sytems/library/extensions. Okay so now i know what E/e stands for and S/L/E. even after i've moved the kexts, E/e folder still has a copy of them and S/L/E has a copy of them. This is probably not the best way, but i got it to boot this way without any know how or reasoning behind it. just plain trial and error.

5) went back to your script and updated the boot cache

6) booted in SL using -x32 command and wala...

7) turned off spotlight using terminal command

8) i think i had to run script and toggle the kexts somewhere, but the instructions weren't very clear so i didn't know how to do it. You mean to say run kext/kernel installer and when the script asks you "Install KExts/kernels, Y/N?" you just type the numbers corresponding to the kexts instead "8 enter, 9 enter, 10 enter"

9) rebooted the first time i got KP

10) went back into my 10.5.8 drive and checked that the snow leo S/L/E had duplicates of all the MISC kexts. Deleted the duplicates and rebooted SL. now i can reboot everytime

[b]Issues

1) ati 3870 resolution goes up to onli 2048X1152. in leopard it goes to 2560X1600 (that's what i use)

2) There are no icons visible on desktop. I can't see macintosh HD, or anything i drag to desktop. When i copy a file, the time remaining thing doesn't show. not sure why but a pretty bad problem to have

3) OSX86 tools doesn't work. I can't install kexts with it or repair permissions. it might be my SL install that's causing it. it says there are "no installers/packages available". i might have moved or deleted something i'm not supposed to.

Questions

1) I guess i have to learn the proper way to build this bootcache thingy and toggle kexts to it's proper place. you think u can give me some instructions for that? instructions for a retard?

2) Need to fix the invisible icons on the desktop. any idea how?

3) I looked around the web and found some ppl getting the nvidia 9800Gt to work. Its a 100 dollar card. i read something about efi string and have no idea about that. I 'll research more on it but if you happen to know that this card does work on SL can you provide me a link or a string or something to help me install this card? i can't live with 2048x1152 resolution. ha!

4) GTx 285 is just way to expensive but i might go for a 4870. everything works for the 4870? if it is a easy install, can you tell me how to do it?

5) now that SL is booting pretty good on my system (god forbid anything happen to it) i noticed that you told some body else to include -x32 in the bootlist so you don't have to type it all the time? can you give me some instructions for that?

Things I Plan to do

I was wondering if deleting atix2000.kext and so on enables my 3870 to work and actually work pretty good barring the resolution thingy, what if i replaced all the ATI kext in my SL with the ones in my 10.5.8 install and install natit again? maybe u tried that and it didn't work?

Regarding upgrading - are you referring to upgrading from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 (you mentioned upgrading from 10.5.8)? No problems there. There were a few hiccups, but they were in regards to the ATA kexts for the JMicron controller. They had caused KPs on boot. Using a different one now.

i mean upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6. i'm going to do this next to see wether it works since now i know SL CAN work on my mobo and it was just the 3870 messing it up

I've heard that SL doesn't boot on >1 partition drive, but I've never confirmed that myself. I am, however, running SL on a drive by itself, so never experienced any issues there. Might be tempted to make 2 partitions and see if I can install it and see what's up about that. Sounds to be a real limitation, if you ask me.

I know SL can run on >1 partition on a REAL mac cos i'm doing it here with my MACPRO. i'm not sure what the issue is but more trial and error on my part will verify this soon and you can probably post it in your new thread sometime about partitions and such. every couple of pages in the forum seems to have some sort of frustration with this .

I think the install methods are mature, but the implementation may need to be tweaked for best results. The setup I have in the script can be clumsy (limited cache build to get into SL, then full cache build and reboot) and I'm not the only one using this method.

good to know! now i have to tweak my systems around these things.

hope to hear from you soon,

ed

Have a couple of solutions for you.

Issues: 2. No icons or drives on desktop. Go to finder preferences and select show these items on the desktop.

Issues: 3. OSX86 is not working. Go and find Kext utility and install all kexts you need to be installed. Snow Leopard works a little different regarding kext.cache and what not.

Question: 1. Look above for answer regarding kext management.

Question: 2. Look above.

Question: 3. I use the 9800GT 1024mb and works great. What brand and model number are you looking at to buy?

Regarding the installer being corrupted. It is from installing Snow Leopard from a leopard 10.5.8 or lower version to a clean hard disk. My solution was to either run the package BSD.mpkg again from within SL. Might be best to install Snow Leopard from within a Snow Leopard install. Fixes the installer error and permission problem. Hope it helps.

thank you sniper for all your answers. i have right now a PNY geforce 9800GT 512 mb. how did you get it to work in SL? can you give me a step by step? i tried aquamacs efi strings but i get KP. would greatly appreciate it. PM me if it's more convenient to talk that way. Also, what is the maximum resolution u can get with the geforce? i tried the 9800gt on 10.5.8 with nvinject and i also get max resolution 2048X1152 which really sux on my 30 inch...;)

You will not need 64-bit by default unless you are running more than 32gb of ram. Mac Pro's are running in a i386_x86 format still. You can run x32 and all the native x32 and x64 apps will run in unison. No problems.

You will of course need the dual link dvi. The max resolution will support 30 inch. Do you have two dvi connectors on the card? I'll look for a EFI String for you, that's what I used. Matter of fact, I used the same EFI string I used for 10.5.7. Give me some time, I'll see what I can do.

Hi everybody,

i finally got my SL to work under my DFI lanparty JR t3H6. I tried my install with to graphic cards

1) Geforce 9800 GT 512mb

2) ati 3870 mac and pc edition

several issues with graphic cards

1) back in 10.5.8 i used the ati 3870 with natit kext. I used to be able to get up to 2560x1440 resoltuion. but in snow leopard i only get up to 2048x1152. This is a real issue for me.

2) Geforce 9800GT works with efi string in DD's 4.0 script its real easy to do. But again i only get 2048X1152 resolution. In 10.5.8 i get 2560X1440 also. bad bad bad

3) Tried to resolve issues with swtichresx4 (for snowleo) to get higher resolution but screen appeared fuzzy and shaky. so no go.

Sound

There is a new voodoo.hda for snow leopard out and i installed it with kext utility and sound works. I only use my built in audio for very light listening and i have firewire audio interfaces that i use for more serious stuff. even that voodoo.hda for snow leo sounds pretty good for what it is. i did not test mic inputs or other ports because i don't use them.

Questions

1) How can i test wether my graphics card are working properly. is there some sort of "geekbench" for graphic cards? is there some sort of app i can accelerate my gpu hardware to drive it to get higher resolutions?

2) anybody can post a step by step on getting ati 4870 to work?

3) how do i find out wether my grachis card has QE CL and taht stuff working?

hope somebody can help me.

update:

Guys, the way to get ati 3870 to work: go to S/L/E folder in snow leo and delete ati1000x.kext to ati3000x.kext. install with ATY.init not natit. i tried with natit and i only get 1024x800 resolution

Same issue with network here!

Tried all the network kexta but without any results!

There are a lot of people having problems with LAN on SL here.

Some times I got lost my LAN ports also. I did a power deconnection for several hours and a reboot without a LAN plugd in , after system up plugin the LAN and it got back this way each time !

;)

Well, unless you have a compatible network card or adapter, you are currently stuck with the 32 bit kernel.

Let's hope someone compiles a compatible 64 bit kext. The ones out there are not working.

Cheers, Mikel

Haha. This is how I got mine working after resetting the CMOS because it appeared they had died all together. Has anyone successfully got networking to work with just using an EFI device-id string or a DSDT patch? I haven't tried it, but that seems like the best option.

Did you have to remove the IONetworkingFamily to make it work? Do you still have Time Machine functionality?

I did not remove any kext and everything works. I haven't tried Time Machine yet under 10.6 since my time machine hard drive currently host my old 10.5.7 setup (I want to keep it a little longer to make sure all critical apps are working fine under 10.6) but it worked perfectly well under 10.5.7 (with 3rd party drivers). I would be surprised if it didn't work.

Hi All, Ive been reading up on the last 80 so pages... still none the wiser.

My 10.5.6 has worked ok since may, I now want to go up to 10.5.8

I only have access to my 10.5.6 DVD or Disk img and the apple updater.

To make sure it all works I kept my working install and did a new one with the DD script, updating to 10.5.8 immediately after installing 10.5.6

But after chamelion loading I get "You need to restart your computer"

If I start in verbose mode I get a kernel panic while runing dsmos.

What could cause this?

Bios iussue?

Ok, complete noob here...

I stumbled across this forum while researching a few issues I am having after installing OSX 10.5.8 on the following setup:

M/B: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5

CPU: Intel Core i7 920

RAM: Corsair 12 GB XMS3 6 x 2 GB PC3-10600 1333MHz 240-Pin DDR3

Graphics: EVGA nVidea GeForce GTS250

HD: 2x WD 1TB Caviar Sata drives

Optical: LG GH22LS30 Sata DVD drive

EFI-X v1.1 USB device

In order to use the EFI-X USB device, I had to preinstall the retail OSX 10.5.6 and upgrade it to 10.5.8 for use with the above hardware.

I had no issues doing that since I have a mac laptop that I could plug in an external USB Sata drive to do the installation.

Putting all the components together and firing up the machine worked fine, once the hard drive was installed with the pre-installed OS I was able to successfully boot up the computer running OSX.

===

However, I am having some issues. After scouring this forum those issues may have been fixed.

First, the onboard LAN ports are not working. I have tried altering the BIOS but no luck on getting them to work. After reading through this forum it looks like there are ways to remedy this. My question is, how do I remedy this?

I also have a SIIG FW800 PCI card that worked fine in my really old G3 running OSX 10.4.1, but it does not work in the i7 machine. Since FW800 is native to OSX now, I thought it should work. But it seems that I may need something else to help OSX on the i7 to see it. Are there any workarounds to get this to work?

The external SATA connectors do not work. The motherboard came with a card with 2 Sata connectors. I installed it and plugged them in, however my external SATA drive does not work. The case I have (a Lian Li PC-A17) has an external SATA port and that too, when plugged in to the Motherboard, does not work. From the postings here and the screen capture in the beginning of this thread, it looks like these extra SATA connectors could be made operational. How is this accomplished?

====

With all of that said, I am not sure if I should start over from scratch and follow the instructions here on installing OSX on my setup or hopefully find the files needed to get everything working again. So my overall question, (besides my other questions above) is there a way to install some kext files to utilize the power on this motherboard and my peripheral devices using the EFI-X USB device? Or should I just start over and not use the EFI-X USB device, and use your setup to get OSX running and operating on this beast?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-

S

PS, Is anyone out there familiar with the LG DVD drives? There seems to be some DVDRAM cache on the drive that mounts a DVD icon on my desktop with a PC executable file in there, its very annoying. Does anyone know how to squash that? or should I just return this.

Hi, MAJ

Thanks for your reply!

Yes,the Permissions are wrong, and when I tried to reinstall BSD.pkg I either got a KP or after installation my account became "Standard" and there is no way to get sudo (Not in sudoers list) or change my account type. After several fresh reinstallations, can you tell me how to get right Permissions set? I even tried to boot PreBoot CD w/o luck to see the retail DVD in the boot menu...

2) anybody can post a step by step on getting ati 4870 to work?

I did the install from usb. First I got a black screen when setup comes to graphics mode. Solution: Put aty_init.kext in extra folder of USB-Stick. Start setup with -x32. Everything went fine. SL with radeon 4870 with dual-monitor-support and qe (translucent menu bar). start SL always with -x32. aty_init.kext is not x64-capable.

- I've long advocated that the DD script be modified to use on other motherboards.

- Guess 1: the DD script itself doesn't need to be modified, just the folders full of kexts.

- Guess 2: the dsdt utility would work on these other motherboards. Not clear to me why blackOSX uses this complicated process involving Koalala's ACPI patcher, while DD just invokes a program that creates the dsdt.aml in one shot.

- If there is enough interest I suggest we start another thread for this. Please reply, or start the thread, if you are interested. Though maybe this is the wrong place to ask.

- This current thread is already very long. To some degree discussion of non- UD5/Gigabyte/i7 motherboards has been tolerated. Maybe not as enthusiastically, or at least, there are far fewer people who own those motherboards, at least reading this thread.

- I tried to get my EP35-DS3P to work using the DD script. Got SL to install once I unchecked printers and languages. Tried using the dsdt utility, EFI string graphics, and the same set of kexts that blackOSX uses for the EP45-DS3, but I get the same kernel panic during boot.

- To answer your initial question, one sanity check for graphics is to look at Apple Menu... About This Mac... More info... Graphics/Displays and see if Quartz Extreme says Supported.

- Am I right here that with other motherboards on can simply go through the (SL) DD script including dsdt, at which point its mostly a matter of retrying different subsets of kexts until it works?

Try to completely power off you computer, that might help

Does networking still work an a windows system?

I had the same problem, but found a fix.

I went to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and removed com.apple.network.identification.plist, NetworkInterfaces.plist and preferences.plist. Then I restarted.

These files get recreated (with default values of course) next time Mac OS X starts.

I can imagine it would be enough to just through out one of the above files, but I don't know which one it was causing the problem in this case so I trashed all three. :)

So far I've only used the Intel SATA ports on the UD5 but I've used them all now and need more sata connections. What happens if I use the JMicron ports? Will my install not be stable? I'm on 10.5.7 right now but I plan to install SL when DD get's his script out.

Your install will be stable but you will lose Sleep functionality. DD already has a SL script out 4.0beta.
