Thanks Maj!! I used your other script to load 10.5.7 worked wonders. Now im using ur new one to run 10.6. Ive tried various methods and i still get the same kernal panic.

Im using a Evga x58, Core i7920, GTX280, 12gb of ddr3 memory, I have a 2 partitioned hd. 1st partition has leopard 10.5.8 on it and second is for snow.

Great to see the new script's ready, nice work DD. I have a couple of questions though;

  1. Why is it that Spotlight needs to be disabled?
  2. Are the current set of kexts not compatible with the 64-bit kernel?
  3. Can I install SL using the 'upgrade' disc?

Thanks!

I should have mentioned that Spotlight just needs to be disabled after the first boot, because you'll get a mdworker kernel panic when the indexing is finished. After the cache has been properly built and rebooted, Spotlight can then resume. I'll update the instructions to make that clear.

Not all kexts are x86_64. There are some i386 kexts that just won't work in that mode.

As mentioned before, the benefits of running in 64-bit mode is a bit overblown. You can run 64-bit applications in 32-bit mode.

Most of the visible or obvious benefits of running the 64-bit kernel is in regards to extended memory addressing (support for more RAM, more than what our board even supports) and better performance when running virtual machines, like VMware Fusion (when it's updated). There are other benefits, but most of them are under-the-hood and visible to developers, not the public at large, running your run-of-the-mill applications.

The SL disk is a full install. It's a upgrade in name only. So, yes, it should work.

StaticRain3,

Make sure you're using the 'x32' flag in the boot plist or at the boot prompt.

Awesome. I picked up my i7 chip today (MicroCenter rules), and should have my GA-X58-UP4D by the middle of the week. Looking forward to getting it all put together and loading up SL.

Which begs a question (and probably a dumb and many-times-answered one, but what the hell): Any reason why I can't do the initial install to my new system drive from an existing 10.5.x install on different hardware? Obviously I'd maintain the settings for the new board, and enter the UUID for the boot drive, etc.

Nice work DD!

Just wanted to mention the script does not recognize my Apple Soft RAID setup, just tweaked the select_drive() function to get an install.

Running fine now.

try with only 1(!) partition with SL.

I had the same problem with multiple partition (and also choose the right boot prg: pc efi v10)

Mmm... The script is not working well for me Digital_Dreamer :s...

When I boot the first time, it works beautifully. I disable spotlight and i install the Misc kexts to Extra, then, when I reboot, the boot process is stuck. In -v, everything seems loaded, but the login screen doesn't come up (the last messages are realtek messages). Am I missing a step?

Yep im used "-x32" at the begin as my kernal flag same results, like right when the grey apple menu pops up, the kernal flag pops up right after.

Hmmmmmm. Using the Golden Master? 10a432?

Using PC-EFI v10 bootloader?

Try the -v flag and post a picture of the log, so we can see what's going on.

No reason that can't be done. It's not a problem. Just don't use the DSDT patcher until you have the other system running.

Sounds graphics related. Are you using the ATY_Init.kext? If so, it should be in /System for SL.

I identified the problem I think. I safely patched DSDT after booting into SL, then after rebooting I tried installing the appropriate graphics patch (http://netkas.org/?p=137) which caused a kernel panic. It instructs me to run in 32-bit mode - which it is - so I'm a bit confused as to why it doesn't work.

I'll keep trying though. If anyone with a working 4890 in SL could offer any advice that would be great.

Thanks again!

Did you get the boot cache updated and system rebooted before trying the graphics patch?

Hello Guys!

I have just installed Snow Server (Build433) @ EFI Boot. Only in a 64 bit audio is not working (kext's audio are in S/L/E). Install step by step by DD instructions.

Digital Dreamer thanks, your work is invaluable, as we have done without you ..... :D

Thank you!

That's cool. I tried to make sure the script recognized the Server DVD, so hope that portion worked if that's what you used.

There are other audio kexts in the repository, so try those.

So I'm looking for the easiest way to do the upgrade.

Right now I have a UD5, i7 920, GTS 250 (I think it's just a 9800 GTX+), running 10.5.7 perfectly. I also have a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard.

I'm planning on installing SL for the UD5 on a new drive. Should I use the current Leopard install to run the scripted install or the Mini with SL on it?

Also, anything special to get the graphics card working?

I had purchased an OS X 10.5.6 Retail disk at the same time I built my i7 system, and from what I gather from this thread, a 10.5.7 retail is a requirement for i7 installs. Is this correct?

AFAIK, Apple doesn't sell a 10.5.7 retail disk...it is provided only with new systems. Furthermore, a 10.5.7 retail disk is not available in any of *my* usual places. Is an i7 install only possible for the privileged few that received a 10.5.7 disk with a real Mac?

Just wondering, and thanks...

no you download the 10.5.7 combo updater... however both 10.5.8 and 10.6 (snow leopard) are out. Anyway you can get the i7 working with 10.5.2 - 10.6. As lame as it may sound you may want to read through this thread a bit. I know its long... Anyway your questions have been answered in one form or another a bunch of times.

Perhaps you should just try to get 10.6 working? You can either buy it off amazon for $25 or get it the *other* way. It seems like if you are just starting fresh then perhaps you might want snow leopard. Otherwise if 10.5.7 is your hearts desire you can download the "combo updater" which will get you there from an earlier version of leo.

Hi, MAJ.

Thanks for your new RC Script!

I was able to install SL by uninstalling ANY_Init.kext and generate GFX string before booting into desktop, otherwise it will only show a black screen.

At firest boot following your guide to disable Spotlight and move the kexts into /Extra folder in the Script. Reboot.

But I get frequent KP while playing with it, even when I open a file/folder, go on line etc.

And the system can NOT boot into 64 bit mode. It just hang there.

Did I do somthing wrong ?

Edit:

1. Now I can boot into 64bit mode via bootflag in com.apple.boot.plist in /Extra, I do not know why I can only boot into x32 at first no matter I added -x64 flag at PC_EFI v10.2 prompt. And I have network fully working (via 64bit Realtk8139 kexts, although showing "No IP" in System Preferences).

2. Someone at a Chinese forum has compiled a 32/64bit RealtekR1000.kext from source file of Psystar, and several have tested and reported it working(mobos UD4 or UD5) , please, anyone who wants Earthnet fully working in 64bit, test and feed back:

1). If you install into /Extra/Extensions/, it will NOT work cos it needs to load IONetworkFamily.kext, you have to install it into /System/Library/Extensions/

2). Please delete AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext in IOnetworkFamily.kext(show package Contents > Content/Plugins),or it may malfunction or get conflicts.

3. I do NOT know why I will get KP when building kext cache in 64bit,even in sigle user mode...

Regards,

Thanks Digital_Dreamer for your help about the ATY_init.kext, but still have one problem:

Sometimes, the sound is not working. I tried the default AppleHDA en HDAenabler in extra and system, but sometimes there is no sound after boot, sometimes there is and it's not working well (it falls away sometimes) and sometimes it works perfect...

DD, thanks for awesome script, once again. It worked just fine (just like the previous 3.x) on evga x58 board :(

I have one question though, is it possible to make Network work in x86_64 mode? Everything seems to work except the blasted Realtek driver.. (it's installed in /S/L/E). Works fine in 32 bit mode.

Thanks

you can try this solution: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1229762

For me it worked!

Seems I fixed my graphics problem. It was a result of ATY_Init.kext being in /Stored_Kexts and not S/L/E. I didn't think that would be the problem because the system still booted when in /Stored_Kexts. But anyway, QE/CI are working and I've also got dual DVI support as well!

I've got a couple of other problems though which I could use some help with. My ethernet and audio aren't working at all, and I'm not too sure why. My board is the GA-EX58-UD3R so the ethernet kext may be for a different chipset? Not sure though because the supplied kext for the UD5 in 10.5 worked fine for me.

My old audio kext isn't working either, and I can't see any reason why it shouldn't... I'm guessing it needs to be modified a bit or something.

As always, any help appreciated guys!

Edit:

Really strange why ethernet isn't working. Under the LAN part of the specification for both boards it shows 'Realtek 8111D chips (10/100/1000 Mbit)'. Ethernet doesn't show up in the network preferences at all.

Hi DD, your newest script for SL looks pretty good. My system is working fine on SL with a USB stick. And on Leopard, I used the manual method of creating the EFI Partition for boot up (based on my Chameleon disk).

My question is this. When I use your script, the EFI partition appears both in Terminal (diskutil list) and in Disk Utility. It never showed up in DU in Leopard before, just in Terminal. Is this something new with SL? Just wondering...thanks!

Thanks, Mango.

The combo updater to 10.5.7 seems to belong in the 'chicken before the egg' category. How do I apply an updater if I can't get an older version installed?

I finally was able to get a hacked distro working: Kalyway 10.5.2. No sound (don't care), and my 250+ Gb hard drives are both reported as 128Gb by DiskUtils. I searched high and low for a solution to the 128Gb problem, but the only solutions I found related to 10.4.x installs, which did not apply to me.

Nevertheless, I went ahead with this thread's instructions for doing a retail install, ignoring the 128Gb problem. The 10.5.6 Retail disk installation hung half way thru, just after completing the 'Essentials' installation. No errors, no explanation. I had to 'force kill' the installer, which left my target drive mounted and un-unmountable, so I restarted Kalyway and carried on with the rest of the procedure as if nothing had gone wrong (I went on the assumption that the core retail OS had been installed properly). I installed the 10.5.7 combo updater, and finished the remainder of the patch installer script, seemingly successfully.

When I now try to boot my new retail install, I get the standard white circle with a line thru it. I am not sure how to approach resolving this problem, as the chameleon bootloader menu doesn't seem to allow me to do a -v startup. At this point, I'm dead in the water.

Thanks again.

I was able to fix the problem by going into DiskUtil and expanding the partition. If use DD's script to install 10.5.6 it will only show 128 Gb (I don't know why). After you finish installing the software (be sure to upgrade to 10.5.7) you can go into disk util to expand your partition. Now, sometimes this works, and sometimes I get an error, which i can't recall at the moment. I was able to circumvent this since I wanted to dual boot anyways, and created 3 partitions (Fat32, NTFS, and MacOS Journaled). Hope this helps.
