AppleIIGuy
I'll give it a shot. Where can I get the latest version of the patcher? Taruga's site seems to be down again. Can I ask what your beef is with VoodooHDA? Ryan VoodooHDA only does stereo no digital / 5.1, 7.1 sound.
ryansimms
VoodooHDA only does stereo no digital / 5.1, 7.1 sound. I have optical s/pdif working with VoodooHDA (haven't tried coax, but I'd assume it would work as well). You have to adjust the format to 16 bits in Audio MIDI set up. I haven't tried surround. I haven't been able to get line out working any other way besides VoodooHDA Ryan
yydoctt
Hi D_D I have a few observations from my install that i'd like to query you.. Firstly, I had a long time figuring out why deep sleep (S3) wouldn't work, I assumed it was my overclock so I took it off and sure enough it worked. I then made the assumption it was my RAM that might have been stopping the sleep (at the time didn't know S3 writes to RAM!) So I found with much trial and error that the only way for S3 sleep to work is if I underclock the RAM below 1060! (my RAM is stock 1600!)... Is there anyway to enable deep sleep with the RAM atleast back to 1600 as to me this doesn't make sense (I have 6gb). Also in system profiler it has my Ram at 1600! Secondly in system profiler there are some missing details, such as pci and pcie cards display no information.. Which is fine, but I'd quite like to see what my graphics card link speed is. With cinebench it does well but on the gtx line apparently it might be running at half the link speed.. I used the dsdt patch which has gathered most of the information, just missing those two, oh and its also got my processor speed wrong. Your help, as always, is greatly appreciated! Note: I'm on Chameleon 2 RC1 (will update when there is a final version or when SL comes)
@ROBASEFR
I'll post my latest system.log now, maybe you can help me. What I did was: Retail 10.5.6 + 10.5.7 Delta Update (same error with Combo) + latest Chameleon Release from website + Digital_dreamer's kext patcher - external GUID HFS+ HDD boot from EX58-UD5 F8f, i7 920 D0, G.Skill Trident, GTX 260. I was able to fix post errors with update to F8f Bios. Still hangs at OSX boot. Log: Last visible line in -v mode was Hope you can help me. Installing chameleon without kexts and only install disabler, dsmos and openrehalt didn't help. I had to re-install récently my Scratch system (iPC 10.5.6, 9.5 voodoo kernel) and i discovered that leaving my personnal optimised Bios settings prevented me to reinstall and reboot a new system ( Bios F8f) So I toke the Load Optimized Defaults (virtual Bios) settings and enabled only SATA/RAID AHCI mode and USB for keyboard and mouse. ! -> F10 After that I did a first reboot with " busratio=20 cpus=1 -v -f " and that was Ok In your case with vanilla 10.5.6 this would be only " -v -f " I always put de boot UUID of the installdisk in the kernel boot flag in my com.apple.Boot.plist ! You could also enter: macmodel=MacPro4,1 ! Good luck !
pcace
Hey, i just plugged my second hard disk in in an other way... now its working. digital_dreamer
For those with the GA X58-UD3R boards this is my experience with A380 Snow Leopard: Ethernet does not work with the 'purple' Realtek kext (neither 32 nor 64 bit mode) IOFamilyNetworking works in 32 bit mode (not 64) and must be installed in System <SNIP> DD, your script is a marvel! makes installation and modification really simple. One nitpick: the warning about running DSDT on the 'target' computer shows up as black inside red on black - that is impossible for my 70 year old eyes to read! The 64-bit version of RealtekR1000 works for me in S/L/E. LOL! I'm just 25 years from that milestone. I've thought about changing the color scheme from the red to yellow for warning messages. Hi MAJ, did the Automatic Ethernet Timemachine Fix and Nvidia Graphics detection work for you (Chameleon 2 RC2). I had no success with that. Rebuild kextcache in SL: kextcache -v 1 -t -l -m /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/Extensions.mkext /System/Library/Extensions I haven't tried the new bootloader flags, yet. Been too busy. You can also add the /Extra/Stored_Kexts contents to that boot cache, too, although you may know this already. kextcache -v 1 -t -l -m /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/Extensions.mkext /System/Library/Extensions /Extra/Stored_Kexts (Anyone following this must realize that the paths are not complete in the above Terminal commands, but are sufficient for those who know what they are doing when writing them out.) proengin and I have worked out a nice discovery regarding the boot caches: If you are not able to boot into SL because of a failed boot cache update and you do not have another OS X install to work from, you can boot into Single-User mode (-s) on your SL install, mount your volume (mount -uw /), and perform the boot cache build. If you need to include the /Extra kexts, you'll need to repair permissions on that /Stored_Kexts directory first: chown 0:0 /Extra/Stored_Kexts/* chmod 755 /Extra/Stored_Kexts/* Then you can do the combined cache build of both /Extra and /Extensions. Now, when doing this in Single-User mode, the text wrap-around on screen will make this confusing when typing out the long commands. But, realize the keyboard input buffer is separate from the screen buffer and that all your inputted characters are intact as typed. After completion, exit and complete the boot, then reboot. BTW, you don't need the -v flag on the kextcache command, but in Single-User mode it's nice to get some feedback as to whether it was successful or not. Additionally, the -l flag is not crucial for boot, but will create a cache file using just the necessary info for boot. Without the -l flag, that cache includes everything - 28MB file from /Extra and /Extensions; versus 8.7MB with just -l flag. regards, MAJ
digital_dreamer
I've been messing around with Chameleon 2 RC2 today. The developers say the Firewire DMA bug is fixed. I'm confused by this because I get the following messages in my console at boot up. 7/29/09 2:09:04 PM kernel FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 8024 PCI now active, GUID 001ac6710000241d; max speed s400. 7/29/09 2:09:10 PM kernel ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure. 7/29/09 2:09:10 PM kextd[103] a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireIP.kext Any thoughts? It seems like the first message is good. I don't think I got that prior to RC2. The second message is obviously bad but I'm used to getting that. Does anyone know what's going on? Thank you. EDIT: It might be of importance to note that the first and second message are always 6 - 7 seconds apart Interesting that the FW message still shows. I hadn't noticed, but will now that you brought it up. Are you using build r640 or r638? I'll post my latest system.log now, maybe you can help me. What I did was: Retail 10.5.6 + 10.5.7 Delta Update (same error with Combo) + latest Chameleon Release from website + Digital_dreamer's kext patcher - external GUID HFS+ HDD boot from EX58-UD5 F8f, i7 920 D0, G.Skill Trident, GTX 260. Installing chameleon without kexts and only install disabler, dsmos and openrehalt didn't help. Very unusual log. But, you probably didn't want to hear that. ;-) I see no evidence that any patched kexts are loading from /Extra. You're not using the beta version on that leopard install are you? I ask because the kexts that would get installed are only for SL. I have dual boot now. XP (for gaming ) and MAC OS X.Everytime when i wanna use MAC OS X,do i have to change from BIOS, the "HARD DISK BOOT PRIORITY" .I thought there is a Grub / Lilo bootloader, like in Linux. It's very easy this way. After rebooting,i only have to select the OS (Linux or XP ),with the keyboard arrow. Is that possible to have it the same way, using MAC OS X and XP , dual boot ? Now that i have 10.5.2 ,is it possible to update to 10.5. xxx ?? If "yes" how ? Installing a new DVD ? I haven't found any GTX 285 drivers. Actually i did,but i received the message " the OS is outdatet for this driver" ... something like that. Please help me with some infos /links / Thanks a million. Using the Chameleon RC1 bootloader doesn't show your OS partitions? XP and OS X? If they are not showing up, you should be able to, at least, select them via BIOS partition selector <F12> Hi D_D I have a few observations from my install that i'd like to query you.. Note: I'm on Chameleon 2 RC1 (will update when there is a final version or when SL comes) You can change your RAM speed reporting using the smbios.plist that's located in /Extra. It's the SMmemspeed string. I don't know any way of getting around that sleep/OC issue for now. This is related to being able to control CPU and RAM sleep states. When it's OCed with a unknown variable, it's difficult to put it to sleep, as it's not clear what it needs to return to at wake. I'm hoping we can fix this issue with a little DSDT hacking. If you delete the SMmaximalclock key in the smbios.plist in /Extra, it should be able to grab the proper CPU clock speed from the BIOS. regards, MAJ

DocShadow
... The RealtekR1000.kext loads on x64 but doesn't recieve a (DHCP) IP-address. Thanks to MAJ (DD) for doing all the footwork to get OSX up and running on this board. The scripts have been very ‘useful’ and certainly save a lot of time when testing various setups. This is my third board that I’ve built for OSX and I must admit the most difficult … I still don’t have it completely working. I have not been able to get a working 10.5.6 but do have two SL’s running (one is my test partition) but only in 64 bit. Video was easy, sound a bit harder but got it working last night following some of the suggestions in the previous threads …. Internet is still a no go but hope to try some of the suggestions here later tonight. The kext loads but address is not picked up in System Preferences. Oddly …. I have the SL builds on 2 partitions on one drive with Chameleon 1 and 10.5.6 on another drive with 2 RC1. I can’t boot into the SL drives without booting through the 10.5.6 RC1 install, but can’t boot the 10.5.6. … I get the reboot loop. I’m going to have to reinstall 10.5.6 but not until I can boot the SL drives on their own.
star-affinity
That's odd. There are a lot of under-the-hood changes, but the only file that changes from RC1 to RC2 is the boot file that's installed at root. You're safe reinstalling RC1 bootloader from the script, however. I didn't have any issues with RC2, but can't use it for SL, as it just KPs every time. I've had better success with PC-EFI v10 in SL. MAJ Hmm... now I managed to get it working for some reason. I decided to connect the drive I use for Mac OS X to my MacBook Pro in order to try and re-run your script. Buy mistake I just started the computer first and it booted straight in to Mac OS X (using Chameleon RC2)! The only difference being that it was another day and I started the computer from scratch. I'd also like to report that it worked fine to rebuild the drive using the just released Drive Genius 2.2. Seems it didn't want to fix the boot blocks like DiskWarrior did and it found some error that was gone after the rebuild. Another question – if I ran your script when it was at version 3.7 do you recommend that I run it again now when it's at version 3.91? I can see there's quite a few bug fixes in there... Thanks and best wishes!
itdoesnotwork
I always put de boot UUID of the installdisk in the kernel boot flag in my com.apple.Boot.plist ! You could also enter: macmodel=MacPro4,1 ! Good luck ! Sorry, I'm a bit confused because I don't know exactly what boot UUID is (I'm not so familiar with content of plist files, didn't have to do much editing until now). Is it just the model identifier which says MacPro4,1, iMac9,1, etc? What I did never do was booting with -f flag the first time. Should it also work when booting with -f flag after incomplete boot attempts? Very unusual log. But, you probably didn't want to hear that. ;-)I see no evidence that any patched kexts are loading from /Extra. You're not using the beta version on that leopard install are you? I ask because the kexts that would get installed are only for SL. Well, I just want to get it working and this is the only log I was able to save without entirely booting this install. However, I did NOT use SL kexts, ofcourse. I also tried manually installing Disabler, Dsmos and Openhaltrestart kexts, from what I could tell the boot log wasn't really different and it also stopped booting at mDNSResponder line... I am a bit surprised about the saved log too, but when I saw the lines during boot I definately saw some extra kexts loading (e.g. graphics injector, etc.). Maybe it didn't log the entire boot process correctly?
FUT1L1TY
Interesting that the FW message still shows. I hadn't noticed, but will now that you brought it up. Are you using build r640 or r638? I'm using r640. Please let me know what you find out about the FW issue. I've updated my sig with my latest info. In good news I'm successfully booting from a USB flash drive. The advantage for me is that I can experiment with different bootloaders and kexts as long as maintain a working backup stick. I can also run DiskWarrior on my System drive and not worry about my boot blocks getting destroyed. In bad news not related to any specific bootloader, I had to remove the audio kexts. They were causing WaveBurner Pro not to see my firewire audio interface. Once I removed them WaveBurner Pro worked great. The strange thing is Logic worked fine with or without the audio kexts installed. In the meanwhile, I'm without on board sound. No huge loss. I have an extra USB dongle that I can use for that. @ROBASEFR
Is it just the model identifier which says MacPro4,1, iMac9,1, etc? What I did never do was booting with -f flag the first time. Should it also work when booting with -f flag after incomplete boot attempts? Just de model identifier MacPro4,1 could mean in your case that your hackintosh Core i7 that has many specific hardware specs in common for Nehalem architecture ! You can modify easely all sort of things with the magnific script that D_D has given to us ! Without knowing how to edit plists and so...... For the first boot -v -f bootflags were in my experience always necessary ! With the latest script D_D 3.9.1 you should suceed ! Good Luck
Vasto
How do I remove everything related to graphics from an already installed installation? To get my graphics card to work all I need are native drivers.
FUT1L1TY
I'm using r640. Please let me know what you find out about the FW issue. Don't you love it when people fix their own problems? Well by some miracle my Firewire security mode bug went away all by itself. I'm not kidding. It just started working. The only thing different between today and yesterday is I repaired permissions and ran Disk Warrior 4.1.1. That's it. Nothing else was changed. This is what I see in the Console now. Woo hoo! 7/30/09 4:15:45 PM kernel FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 8024 PCI now active, GUID 001ac6710000241d; max speed s400. 7/30/09 4:15:45 PM kextd[21] a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireIP.kext I assume the second error mean I can't use firewire for TCP/IP networking. No big deal. Thanks everyone for listening to my daily rants. !!!PLEASE NOTE!!! Do not use Disk Warrior if you are using a standard DD install. It will make your disk unbootable. digital_dreamer
Hmm... now I managed to get it working for some reason. Although there have been changes, updates, and bug fixes to the script, the script's fundamental job of installing kexts has not changed. So, there's little to gain running the latest script if you're looking for improvements in your system. This is one of those areas where if it works, it can't be improved. But, I recommend using the latest, as it has has added features and refinements, but none that would affect system stability or performance. I know there are ways to make a USB pre-boot Flash drive, but how did you do yours? Clever way to get around the DW issue. Don't you love it when people fix their own problems? Yes, I do! !!!PLEASE NOTE!!! Do not use Disk Warrior if you are using a standard DD install. It will make your disk unbootable. Word. You have been warned. I've thought about contacting Alsoft to see if they would make the boot-block fix optional. That'd be nice. regards, MAJ
FUT1L1TY
I know there are ways to make a USB pre-boot Flash drive, but how did you do yours?Clever way to get around the DW issue. My way is a little time consuming and meticulous but it gets the job done. 1) Open Disk Utility and select USB stick and make 1 partition HFS Plus extended, format as GUID. Mine is named EFIBOOT. 2) In Finder, select USB stick and hit command-I. Click padlock to authenticate and deselect "Ignore permissions". 3) Eject the USB stick. If you get an error message, restart your computer. 4) Run Chameleon-2.0-RC2-r640.pkg, select the USB stick as the destination, standard install. 5) Do a little permission repair on the stick. In terminal I start with "sudo chown -R root:admin /Volumes/EFIBOOT" which does the bulk of the work. drwxrwxr-x 13 root admin 510 Jul 29 09:24 . drwxrwxrwt@ 4 root admin 136 Jul 30 16:40 .. -rw-rw-r--@ 1 root staff 6148 Jul 30 13:00 .DS_Store drwx------ 3 root staff 102 Jul 29 09:19 .Spotlight-V100 d-wx-wx-wt 3 root staff 102 Jul 30 16:40 .Trashes -rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 0 Jul 29 09:19 .com.apple.timemachine.supported drwx------ 40 root staff 1360 Jul 30 16:40 .fseventsd drwxr-xr-x 10 root admin 340 Jul 30 12:49 Extra drwxrwxr-t 3 root admin 102 Jul 29 09:24 Library -rw-r--r--@ 1 root wheel 308288 Jul 29 09:24 boot drwxr-xr-x 5 root wheel 170 Jul 25 12:16 usr 6) If you have a working /Extra folder you can drag your contents into the /Extra folder of the USB stick. Otherwise just run DD script (I still use 3.7) being sure to select the USB stick as the target drive. Install Kexts, Patch DSDT. Make sure you have a working smbios.plist and com.apple.Boot.plist. Your stick should look like the picture below. 7) Lastly, go back to the terminal and make sure all your permissions look OK. I can't be specific but use your existing installation as your guide. 8) Go to System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Privacy tab. Drop the boot stick onto that window. 9) When you reboot you will need to drop into the BIOS screen and set the boot order. That's all I can think of. Good luck. Samuroth
Lots of forum users are using this board. Very nice setup. The only sore spot is sound and many just use a USB dongle for audio.Of course, you won't get SLI in OS X, as you probably would know. MAJ Oh what is the issue with the audio :/ Because I want to set this up for audio engineering
FUT1L1TY
Oh what is the issue with the audio :/ Because I want to set this up for audio engineering I believe he was referring to the onboard sound chip on the MSI X58 which I guess is not as well supported by the OSx86 community. You certainly wouldn't use that or any other onboard sound chip for pro audio so basically it's not an issue. Firewire and/or usb will function without a problem. I do not have the MSI board. I am just speaking from personal experience with the UD5 which has much better supported audio. I found in the long run usb/firewire was more reliable for my needs. You don't have a maintenance drive to work from? You could boot into single-user mode (maybe), mount the drive, and delete from there using Terminal commands. To get name of kext: ls /Extra/Stored_Kexts rm -rf /Extra/Stored_Kexts/IOPCMCIAFamily.kext - or whatever the name is kextcache -v 1 -a i386 -m /Extra/Extensions.mkext /Extra/Stored_Kexts regards, MAJ
yumanoid
You don't have a maintenance drive to work from? i used to have sata II drive which i used to use exactly for that purpose. donated it to my father few days ago. i still have 16gb usb drive and im trying to get iatkos v7 onto it but no success. installation stalls at cca 75% of the progress bar. Colorado Cruiser
Newbie here, please be gentle I have 10.5.7 running without issue on the GA-Ex58UD5. Network and sound are working just fine thanks to the fine instructions on page one of this thread. My video is also working, however it's not taking advantage of the hardware. I have a 9600GT with 1gig, but Quartz Extreme is not enabled and Core Image shows as software. I currently have my model identifier set as MacPro4,1 (since I have a Core I7). I thought that the 9600GT should be supported by the native drivers. Is there a quick and easy way to enable the hardware acceleration? Thanks for any advice, and definite thanks for putting together this guide - it made my OS X adventure simple as could be!
