I hope this does not become a double post, the previous one didn't show up.

 

I'm running 10.5.7 installed with DDs 3.6. No problems at all for two months until now. I get a grey screen of death ( just like this:

) after a few seconds of the spinner at the boot image (right after you select a partition to boot).

 

I have iPC installed on a second partition and used it to run DDs 3.9 but that did not solve the problem. I managed to activate quick boot though, so now I'm unable to boot iPC and just get straight to the error.

 

This is with the new version of the boot loader.

 

Any sugestions?

Why sure. The 8000-9000 series are well supported. If the Injectors don't work well (I wouldn't know), the EFI strings are well suited for them. Anyone here can help you with that or you can look in the NVIDIA forums for support on that card.

Great! I tried doing some research on which method is preferred but I couldn't find anything definitive. I'm trying to find a method that is as close to "stock" as possible to avoid problems with Apple updates.

Thanks for the info. What about Nvidia? I have a 9600 GT and if that one works, it will save me some $$

 

The 9600 GT will work great with an efi string. Do not bother with any of the NV kexts including the new universal injector from Netkas.

Try using -v to get some additional info. It might be very helpful.

Netkas released a new PC EFIv10 Chameleon 2.0-Rc1-r431 with better support for Snow Leopard !

Hope this release fixed the CMOS-reinit issue on our MOBO !

Wonder if this has anything to do with HPET 32 or 64 bit Mode ?

If true this will be surely a problem to have Leopard 32bit config in parallel to Snow 64 bit !

 

 

 

By the way D_D my experience with the new F8b modBios(+AHCI 1.20E) is much better then yours !

I haven't had any KP ! And my overclock to 3.0 Ghz is stable as before on Bios F7 !

I have a 9600GT and I agree with FUT1L1TY. Up above I note that I tried dd 3.8 script (not sure if this includes the June 8 netkas ATY_Init or not) and no QE, then I tried running the netkas installer, and no QE.

When I was buying parts I found a GTS 250 for a good price. It's just a 9800GTX+ renamed. I have read that one works well too. Will this one just need a EFI string? If so, is there a step in the DD installer I need to skip or replace with something else?

I've been looking at that card for a while. My guess is try the EFI string first. To generate the string you should run OSx86Tools (link below).

 

1) Click "Add EFI Strings/Boot Flags"

 

2) Click "GFX Strings"

 

3) Click "Custom GeForce hex" and complete the three dialogs with your card's info

 

4) Select the hex at the bottom of the window and copy

 

5) Replace EFI__HEX_STRING_GOES_ HERE in the text below with the string you just copied.

 

<key>device-properties</key>

<string>EFI_HEX_STRING_GOES_HERE</string>

 

6) insert the above text in your com.apple.boot.plist in your /Extra folder (example plist attached)

 

7) Save and reboot

 

Please let me know how it works out and which card you purchased.

Okay, got my EVGA GTX 285 working flawlessly with QE/CI and dual monitors. My only issue is getting on board audio working with a 5.1 setup. If anyone has any ideas let me know... I'm probably doing something stupid.

 

Anyway, this may be of some help but I'm going to list some pointers that worked for me.

1) Make sure that you're target vanilla OSX disk is SATA and in the first SATA slot and AHCI mode is enabled.

2) I wanted a Windows 7 dual boot setup and I tried leaving it on the non GSATA ports. If AHCI mode is enabled, your boot loader will get screwed up and repair may corrupt your entire install if you don't rescue it properly. So I suggest you plug in your Windows 7 disk into the GSATA ports and leave AHCI mode OFF for the GSATA ports. This will save you a lot of time and effort trust me.

3) To get my GTX 285 working I just did the default options of DD's install and used Chameleon 2. After you boot into your install, I removed all Geforce and NVD kexts in SLE and ATY_Init.kext. I then installed the EVGA GTX 285 Mac drivers from netkas.org. Next, I followed this guide installing GFX strings and modified the apple.boot.plist in the Extras folder. Rebooted with my second monitor plugged in and everything worked beautifully.

Try the kext in the file i uploaded they work for me on EVGA x58

 

drop them in /extras/extensions and update book cache

Hi guys,

 

Installed with D.D's script and everything went ok, USB support and audio works.

GPU also works, BUT QE is not supported.

 

GPU is XFX Radeon HD 4890.

Is there a particular step I need to take in order to activate Quartz Extreme in this board?

I know some of you have it working already, but I've got no clue on how to proceed from here.

Edit again. Got mine working!!

 

Mobo: EX58-UD5

CPU: Core i7 920

RAM: Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600

GPU: EVGA NVIDIA GTX 285 with 1GB

Drive: 128GB G.Skill Falcon SSD

 

Video works flawlessly with Netkas's Injector and EVGA Drivers.

 

So freaking fast. Once it POSTs and gets to Chameleon loader, it loads OSX in under 10 seconds.

First a big thank you to everybody providing us with all the info needed to make the Gigabyte board work.

 

I'm still deciding to go with an ATi 4870 or a Nvida 260 for my 1st build.

 

Are the sleep problems with the ati 4870 still present???

 

Can anyone with an ATI 4870 or Nvidia 260 (+ a single CRT screen) please confirm their cards work or don't work with sleep. Or the methods needed to make sleep work...

Well, the problem here was that I didn't get the chance to enter any params since I had accidentally activated quiet boot.

 

After using another computer for the past week, I decided to fix this today and my guess that pounding F8 would give me the menu back proved correct. So I booted with -v and, as often happens when you are desperate enough to ask for help, everything worked just fine, no gray screen of death. *sigh*

 

It's working just as good after a few reboots now so I guess I'll never find out what the actual problem was that caused the gray screen at boot last week.

first off, thanks to dd and everyone on this forum whose posts i picked up useful things from.

 

I am close to getting the retail install working. If i use the version of chameleon 2.0 that comes with the dd 3.9 script, it can boot, but only with the -x flag. If i use the version of chameleon 2.0 i found through google, i now have the Extensions folder in the Extra folder, which means sound works (hopefully), but it won't quite boot anymore. Here is my setup:

 

 

 

 

Mac OS 10.5.6 (bought from Best Buy a couple days ago)

 

EVGA x58 mobo

 

WD IDE HDD (has bootloader & retail install on it)

 

Seagate IDE HDD (many partitions, running kalyway perfectly)

 

 

 

 

when i boot the retail install with -v -x, it gets past "jettisoning kernel", says a few more things, then some things with "fail" in it, then a log saved to somewhere i can't remember  ;)

EX85-UD5 Totally Silent Computer

 

Sorry to be a bit off topic, but some people in this group might find this information useful ;)

 

I want my computer to be as silent and stable as possible. Lately I got annoyed by the noise emitted by my processor cooler and the power supply fan, so I started to google around to find silent replacements for these parts. Here is what I found:

 

Totally silent (passive) processor cooler: Scythe Mugen II

 

This cooler is massive and you can use it with or without the included fan. In both cases it is totally silent.

Totally silent power supply: FSP Zen 400

 

This is a 600 W power supply that is down rated to 400 W and passively cooled. Totally noiseless.

This power supply only has a 4 pin 12 V connector as EX85-UD5 has a 8 pin connector. EX85-UD5 is compatible with both 8 pin and 4 pin, the trick is to connect the 4 pin to the right pins on the 8 pin connector on the motherboard.

My system now has only 1 slow and silent fan blowing air out of the case and the large silent processor fan that came with Mugen II.

 

I tested my new totally silent system with 40 minutes of x264 video encoding with Handbrake 0.9.3. This loads all cores on the system maximally. I also have hyper threading turned on so my 4 cores are seen as 8.

 

I used this free program to monitor my core temperatures: http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

 

The air temperature in my room was about 30 degrees celcius at the time of the test. I never overclock as I wan't my system to be absolutely stable.

- Power Supply: FSP Zen 400 (Totally noiseless)

- Hard Disk: 1,5 TB Seagate SATA Hard Disk.

- Bluetooth: MSI PC2PC-Bluetooth Transceiving Key (MS-6967-010) Bluetooth Wireless Adapter.

- BluRay SATA Burner: Lite-On DH-4B1S DVD+/-RW ja BD-RE

- Monitor: Sony TV KDL32W4000

Actually, the injector in my script's Graphics folder is the same Netkas Universal Injector referenced in the link. So, no need to delete it - just delete the other graphics kexts in S/L/E mentioned in the post and install the GT200 drivers.

Thats right MAJ , I just had to delete the graphics kexts in S/L/E and install the GT 200 drivers! Its not necessary to delete the Graphics folder and then install the same Netkas Universal Injector again!

 

Beautiful , simply just works....

I see that you have made an honest attempt to make it as silent as possible. Although, there is a fan on that heatsink, they put out a few dB. So "Totally" and "Passive" would be the incorrect way to describe this computer.

 

Fortunately, I am sure that you could barely hear any noise, Bravo to your attempt at quietness.
