luh3417
I wish forum- or thread- search worked better. The state of the art in this thread could really benefit from being summarized in a wiki, but when I went to wiki.osx86project.org their "installation guides" stop at 10.5.5 which was so 6 months ago. Lastly, it seems to me dd's script could be very easily adapted for other motherboards, most of the time it should just require changing the kext set in the folders, I wonder if anyone has taken advantage of this. Cosmin Petre
With the announcement of an autumn release date and the demo at WWDC, I was curious about how compatible the current setup will be with Snow Leopard 10.6... Will there be wholesale changes to the way we boot or will we still be able to use chameleon gui? I'm just curious as I finally have my system rock-solid on 10.5.7. cheers
NoskireFiel
Looks like EVGA has released a GTX285 mac edition - does this mean any GTX285 from EVGA will work under osx? bjoure
all right, I think I am very close to get a vanilla 10.5.7 working on my Core i7 rig. However I am still sort of stuck and confused with bootloader in general, so I hope someone can help me close some knowledge gap here. Because I don't think I can do it effectively without really understanding what I am doing. my spec: Core i7 920 Foxconn FlamingBlade GTI --Onboard LAN is Realtek 8111C, this works with Kalyway 10.5.2 and retail 10.5.6 apparently without issues --Onboard Audio is Realtek ALC888, this doesn't work yet but it's not my priority now 6GB OCZ RAM Two hard drives and one DVD drive all in AHCI mode MSI Radeon 4870 --Desktop resolution could only be set to 1024x768 It's my understanding that since Macs use EFI instead of BIOS, MAC OS X can only be booted from a EFI partition, wherever it is. Is this correct? So Boot-132 CD or USB drive loaded with coordinate EFI files can boot MAC OS X, no matter it's the retail DVD or installed on HD, right? I installed Chameleon 2 RC1 on a fresh retail 10.5.6 but I cannot boot leopard in Chameleon, no matter which option I chose (v, f, s) my PC reboots instantly. So I still have to use boot-132 CD to boot leopard every time, as well as the voodoo kernel. To use vanilla kernel I need to upgrade to 10.5.7 because leopard doesn't support core i7 until 10.5.7 or later, I was told. This is where I am stuck. I can upgrade to 10.5.7 via Software Update and apparently I can boot leopard 10.5.7 in Chameleon after the upgrade. BUT the desktop was corrupt and unusable. I've downloaded X58 mobo patch installer and as far as I know the kext regarding Radeon 4870 is right there. But I cannot get it working. How exactly do I fix this? For now I am leaving my rig as 10.5.6 running with voodoo kernel. Chameleon 2 RC1 is installed but cannot boot leopard.
WilliamsEph97
I was running fine under the prior version of DD's script. I decided to do a fresh install using the 3.7 script and now I'm having major networking problems. My USB 802.11n card (Ralink 2870 chip) isn't being recognized under the Networking system pref, though it shows up under system profiler. I removed that and installed a Ralink 2860 PCI card and it isn't being recognized either. One thing I noticed is that I no longer have the "empty" airport symbol in the upper right hand corner of the Finder that used to be there under the prior script installation. Any ideas on how to get networking back? Is there something I have to do with either the IOnetworkingfamily or IO80211 kext? Thanks for any suggestions. If you have the script version that you installed with when networking was working, substitue the IONetworkingfamily kext from that version with the version in the 3.7 script and rerun the kext installer from 3.7. The IONetworking kext has changed over the various versions, obviously the earlier one works for you so use that one instead of the present version. digital_dreamer
Yeah, it's in /Extra/Store_kexts (not sure if has to be in the root directory of /Extra but it's there and Get Info is reporting it to be 400kb or 340,040 bytes and the version plist is saying it is 9.9.9 build 203 edit: I guess disconnecting the SATA to the hard drive and then reconnecting it on a different port fixed it. - thanks for your help, i appreciate it. Glad you got it working. A question though: Which SATA ports did you have to switch to get it working? Did you have to unplug from the white (Gigabyte/JMicron) ports and plug into green/blue ports (Intel)? This is the first time I've heard of a SATA port not working with TM. Did you have AHCI enabled on the JMicron ports? I wish forum- or thread- search worked better. When you refer to the desktop being "corrupt and unusable," are you referring to the video? You'll have to consult with the others regarding the 4870, as that's out of my domain of experience. That's puzzling as there has been no changes to the kexts, except for an update to the audio. I'm thinking that Apple's update may have changed some things for you. If 10.5.6 was working for you, I'd pull a copy of the IO80211Family.kext (or probably the IONetworkingFamily.kext) from that version to use in 10.5.7. The only remaining challenge I have for this system is Automatic Sleep. Manual sleep/wake works just fine. Does anyone have automatic sleep working? Thanks. Auto sleep doesn't work for me, either. Real Macs have the same issue if you do a search on the Apple Discussions forums. I can put it to sleep automatically via PleaseSleep utility, but on wake it results in a KP. Appears to be a sleep image issue that conflicts with Chameleon's sleep image setup. Log shows the length being 512 (k?), which surely can't be right. Not sure if the path is correct. Plan on playing with it and see if I can get it working with an alternate path. regards, MAJ

It's like the machine is completely off with the exception of hitting the keyboard turns it on almost instantly. yeah, its weird, i had said previously that auto sleep did not work on any of my hacks. but i noticed the other day that it is working on my lenovo s10. interestingly i had just added the trackpad scroll kext from the dell forums - this has the side effect of the keyboard not waking the machine up from sleep (now only the power button wakes it from sleep). it definitely did not auto-sleep before that. so i wonder if the lack of auto-sleep is somehow related to usb/keyboard/mouse devices. along these lines, a persistent problem that i've had with my badaxe2 is that it regularly forgets that 'Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver' is ticked. the check box either goes away or even though it is checked it does not require a password. in fact the i7 machine is doing this right now. i never found a solution to this. i finally cut over to the EX58-UD4P, retiring my badaxe2. while i was cloning disks and such i noticed that once a particular (intel) SATA port has seen a particular disk, it doesnt want to 'see' any other disk besides that disk on that port anymore. i wonder if undoing the "internal disk" hack would make that work right - this kind of kills using one of the ports as an e-sata port. I installed retail leopard 10.5.6 with boot-132 CD. I started up leopard with voodoo kernel. With my very limited knowledge on this, I found I cannot start leopard any other way, I have to use the CD and write "rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo" to get in leopard. Once I'm in leopard I run patch installer 3.7 and installed Chameleon 2 RC1 without touching any other options. Now I should be able to boot leopard without CD, correct? Or is there another crucial step I'm missing? My rig reboots instantly (like, in a second ) if I boot leopard 10.5.6 from Chameleon. In boot-132 CD if I didn't write "rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo" and just hit enter nothing happens. So I am using voodoo kernel every time instead of the original Apple vanilla kernel, I guess? I think so but some confirmation would help. I really don't have much experience in this. As far as I know vanilla 10.5.6 CANNOT run on a Core i7 machine so I need to upgrade to 10.5.7, to get a truly vanilla leopard. Correct me if I'm wrong. In leopard 10.5.6 using voodoo kernel, I can upgrade to 10.5.7 via Software Update without any apparent problem. The installer script ran from start to end without freeze-up or kernel panic. After reboot I CAN boot leopard in Chameleon, without writing any command lines, but the desktop is totally messed up (just some black and white pixels here and there). The only thing I managed to get from this desktop is that if I move mouse around there's response on the screen. So I resorted to boot up from the CD using "rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo" again. To my surprise I get the blank screen with the gray apple logo at the center of the screen (the same start up screen as my macbook) and it's busy running some script. Then a stop sign appeared on the apple logo and it hang there. Sorry if this is too verbose! I am trying to get it as clear as possible. Thanks for helping me out! Unless I've misunderstood you, it doesn't appear you've installed anything other than the bootloader. If installing the bootloader is all that you've done, then it surely isn't going to boot without that boot-132 CD. That boot-132 CD contains the necessary patched kexts to run your system. You need to install the patched kexts via script's Kexts/kernel Installer to get a fully running system. That script should contain what you need with the exception of audio, so run that Installer and give it a try. MAJ

In my case everything in S/L/E is vanilla, I use 2 EFI strings, one for the LAN and the other for the 8800GT. Nothing special in /Extra either, however I did run the DDST builder and removed busratio=20 from the boot plist as it shouldn't be needed with the 10.5.7 kernel. The Natit.kext is from the X58 mobo patch. With this bootloader I managed to boot leopard just by going to first HD (80) and hit enter. My rig hang before getting me into desktop. The last few lines on the monitor shows it was starting NTFS driver 2.1 [Flags: R/O] NTFS volume name, version 3.1. which is my second HD without any OS on it. I don't know how it could intervene leopard booting up. Any thoughts? I feel I am so close. The 10.5.7 update was installed and now it seems I just need the correct kexts to boot it. I am burning the CD and all on my macbook now since I cannot start up leopard on my pc.

mattrb
I got the WWDC Snow Leopard release from my buddy who is an apple dev. I tested it on the UD5 and it works great. So fast compared to Leopard, you guys will impressed when it is released. Snow Leopard was made for i7 as well as SSD, which is what my SL is on. I only put disabler kext, voodoohda kext (b/c I wasnt sure if non-snow leopard sound works but I successfully know voodoohda works), dsmos kext, and DSDT. I used the guide at http://osx86.fujilives.com/ & files on the irc: #snowleopard room on irc.osx86.hu A few problems though. Main SL drive doesnt show on desktop but does in finder. Drives show up as orange (LegacyIOAHCIBlockStorage.kext didnt work, do I need something else for this?). Sleep is broken (openhaltkext didnt work). Any suggestions. We need Snow Leopard to work before it comes out or else we will be in the dark come day 1.

VirusX
Hello everyone, i've been reading this topic since last christmas and today i did my first install with the 3.7 script. the installation went smooth by following these steps: <snip>2. Format your Target Hard Drive as HFS+ with GUID partition 3. Run Script steps (Script found in X58 Mobo Patch Installer) 2 (Choose Chameleon 2.0) & 3 (will be easy to understand in the script) 4. Run Script step 4 and install 10.5 from your Leopard DVD onto your Target Hard Drive 4b. Run 10.5.7 combo update (make sure destination is set to your Target Hard Drive) 6. Graphics steps no longer necessary since script 3.7 includes universal kexts. You may still need additional scripts from netkas.org (Eg. QE_CI_Exotic_cards) depending on what graphics card your running. 7. Reload your script and run script step 5 & 6 - Run script step 8 and change "Quiet Boot" to "No" 8. If your Target Hard Drive was in an old computer you can now transfer it across to your EX58-UD5 computer. Make sure you attach it to either SATA2_0 (Blue) or GSATA2_0 (White) 9. Load your bios setup on your EX58-UD5 computer and Enter Integrated Peripherals. If your running your Target Hard Drive from SATA2_0 (Blue) then change "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" to "AHCI" 10. Go into "Advanced BIOS Features" and then into "Hard Disk Boot Priority" and make sure your Target Hard Disk is first on the list. ok - i put the disc back into my i7-system - booted with -v and at the moment as the desktop would appear, the screen goes black (standby) as described here: when I boot into the new install the chameleon logo shows up it says loading darwin then the apple logo appears and then the screen goes blank after about 20 seconds and then loses signal. The computer is still on and key presses produce OSX sounds. I can only assume it has loaded but the video drivers are wrong. is there a way to correct this? I think that there's a problem with the graphics driver. But the new 3.7 script comes with the universal ATY_init.kext from netkas which should work fine with my 4870 (2GB version Vapor X from Sapphire). I cannot use A Simple Guide to the 4830/4850/4870/4890 because this method implies a working desktop Any suggestions? Is there a kext I should replace? Thanks in advance! luh3417
The "universal" graphics did not work well with my 3870, 4830, or 8800GT. While this universal kext is the future, in the mean time, some here work around its bugs by avoiding the universal graphics kext and putting in an old fashioned EFI string. See the previous couple pages where me and others received some help along these lines. However, I personally still have no idea where to get the EFI string for my 4830 or your 4870, though in fairness I haven't gone through every page on Google yet. Can you boot into single user mode? Maybe that will let you try your Simple Guide. Under some circumstances, like if you use the EFI string, you want to disable the universal graphics kext "ATY_Init". This is described in the previous few pages. Move ATY_Init out of the /Extra folder on your boot drive, and while you're at it future proof yourself and also move ATY_Init out of the way into a sub-folder called repository in your script folder. I'm not sure how to mix'n'match the Simple Guide with the dd script, you could extract the kexts it uses and put them in dd script's graphics folder, then run dd script again. If that doesn't work you can run or read through the Simple Guilde scripts to see what other fixup commands it uses, run their script or the commands in it. Another idea is that on June 8 http://netkas.org/ has a slightly newer universal graphics kext. Another idea is to try any other graphics cards you can lay your hands on, maybe things go better with nVidia, and report back your results.
